Far from a tribute to Chris Martinโ€™s middle of the road act, this weekโ€™s ScoutCast reflects on the sea of yellow flags that have flooded our Fantasy Premier League squads over the past week. Youโ€™re nobody unless youโ€™ve collected at least four by Saturday morning.

The uncertainty caused by phantom international break injuries dominates proceedings as Granville and I mark a return to the studio. Whilst I start praying for Georgie Boyd to step up, my co-host begins his campaign to hypnotise me into getting rid of Branislav Ivanovic before he starts putting further daylight between our teams. Iโ€™m refusing to gaze into Granvilleโ€™s eyes.

Elsewhere this week, we catch “Cup Fever” and resurrect the ScoutCast team. Sign up and you could soon have the pleasure of knocking Granville and I out of our own cup competition. Providing we qualify of course โ€“ thatโ€™s far from a given.

“Look at the stars” via this link or “look at how the shine for you” via the handy player belowโ€ฆ

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What are people's thoughts on Tadic's and Welbeck's gametine this week?

The general consensus on here is that Welbeck will start last time I checked and Tadic will probably be fit since only a knock I'm waiting for more news

Depends on their injuries. I can see Welbeck starting and playing 80-odd mins. Not sure on Tadic. He'll probably start given his importance to STH.

I believe a lot of these injury stories are just smoke screens.

Fab owners ... He's due for price drop within an hour.
Are you planning to keep or sell?

    Baines + Fab + Welbeck -> Azpil + Chadli + Costa ... Worth -8 PTAs?

I have exact budget if doing it now for this team.

    Forster
Clyne - Chambers - Azpil (Naylor, Moore)
Siggy - Sanchez - ADM - Chadli (Boyd)
    Pelle - Kun - Costa

      Hoping to keep.

Wanted to do Tadic, Wilson and Sterling to Downing, Sanchez and Duff, but delaying it till tomorrow to wait for news on Downing. If he's out I may have to downgrade Fabs to Oscar instead and get Siggy instead of Downing.

Are there any good nailed on cheap defenders around the 4m price range?

I would argue there isn't. Most in that price range will probably see rotation during the busy xmas schedule, few apart from Duff and Wisdom seem to be nailed on.

Here are some of the other candidates that have been bandied about

Yun - Great fixtures but surely isn't nailed on over the xmas period. Rio returns from injury at the end of November then there is Hill and Onuoha who will get the odd game during the busy fixture schedule. On top of that you have to come to terms with the fact he plays for QPR, probably the worst defence in the league so those 'strong fixtures' in reality are only strong on paper.

Dummett - He's getting plenty of minutes and is probably the closest to being nailed on due to his versatility and Newcastle's defensive injury woes. However despite that, Newcastle have a cruel run of fixtures between now and January. Rotation could also be a problem if all their defenders are fit for the xmas schedule.

Hutton - Villa have a great run of fixtures coming up and Hutton was a bit of a hero early in the season when they had a strong early fixtures. Now back from injury he is poised to win his spot back and continue where he left off. Considering his history of being in exile at Villa I would be wary of backing him for the xmas run. Lowton used to be a regular in that position and it wouldn't surprise me to see them tussle it out for a starting spot. Lowton might get his chance during the xmas run or he might even keep his spot for a little while longer if Hutton gets 'eased in'.

If you are in a position like myself where you could do with a strong budget defender this week, think about the long term benefits of making a transfer here. You need to take into consideration the busy xmas schedule where you will need your bench. These are players that will be required to step up and make a contribution. To me, Duff is the only strong option and if like me you already have him then imo there is no one else that is worth the free transfer. Wisdom and Dummett might seem nailed on but they both have difficult fixtures between now and January and with Gamboa and Newcastles various defenders you couldn't guarantee they would start every game over the busy xmas schedule.

Yun has almost no competition as hill is not good enough for the epl and onouha doesn't play lb. His only competition is traore but harry doesn't have a history of rotating his defence. I'd say yun is nailed until he loses form.

Hutton was exiled due to his wages. PL Is allowed to play the likes of him, bent and nzogbia again hence the reason he is back in the team. He seems to have had a falling out with Lowton and with the performances of the villa defence in huttons absence I can't see him missing out again unless he loses form or gets injured.

To me it looks like wisdom is nailed but as a young player he may get the odd rest over Xmas.

The least nailed to me is dummet. He has Santon and the effervescent ryan Taylor for competition and while he is versatile enough to play cb I can't see him staying in the team when either of raylor or Santon are fit.

'Yun is nailed till he loses form'

'Can't see Hutton missing out again unless he loses form'

Neither of these suggest they are nailed on. Rather they are first choice till they lose form.

My biggest concern is that they will be rotated during the busy xmas period.

You can't guarantee that anyone is nailed on over Christmas. All those players you mention are first choice, though, and you should expect 1 or 2 points from them most weeks, with the odd CS thrown in. They all look likely to play most games, if not every game. You get what you pay for, but if the money saved lets you get the big hitters you want, I'd say it's worth the risk of missing out on a point here or there.

If you have 1 FT, no, I agree.

But if it's a downgrade to fund another move, I don't see why not. Or if you have 2 FT and nothing else pressing, you might as well take a punt on Moore > Dummett or something similar.

Agree. Its a little luck based. But its still a few gw away from gw18. Ur defenders would change by then i think. So even if u get a cheapie to fund a big hitter right now i think u still can enjoy 4-5gws b4 the problem surfaces..which is a long time in fantasy football.

      Hi Ryan.

Yun - yep agreed. Stay clear.

Dummett - could be a potential bargain but blighted by a. playing for NEW and b. the fixtures.

Hutton - the best of the three despite being injured although it says on FPL that he is due back tomorrow.

Duff - I would really like him as I can more BUR cs on the way.

Totally agree with your summary. I feel the make up of most defences is going to be:

Baines, CHS def, three ubers. Good post. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hutton the standout option probably. Dummett and Yun both good bargain choices although admittedly long term they could lose their places. Wisdom and Duff both very solid picks.

Hutton is an interesting option because he does have very good fixtures. I'm just not sure he will remain nailed on over Lowton, the player who was bought in to replace him.

I'm just thinking that if you want certain nailed on players for the xmas period there might be stronger options in the 4.5 - 5m range? However if you and others are 100% confident Hutton willl be just as nailed on as any other player during that run then that will probably be enough for me to invest now.

Sorry ryan had to hit the hay.

I'd say there are probably more options if you are going to go up in budget but I'm not sure how many will be more nailed.

Of course he could be rotated but we do have 5 defenders so you should be covered.

I think you are over thinking this mate it's not like kolarov and clichy with Hutton being the clear first choice but Xmas is a long way away and a lot cab happen between now and then.

                This.

He is our 1st choice left back and Harry already told Traore that he would be behind Yun once Yun got fit.

Hill is injury back up at best, so I'd say you're getting as nailed on a defender as you can get for £3.9m with Yun. Like Ludo said above, the odd cleanie will come these cheap defenders way too.

Harry wants a new CB. Rumours are Rio will go in January and most QPR fans would gladly drive him to his next destination as he's been a liability. Its no coincidence that we've started playing better when Rio got left out and Yun replaced Traore (who is a joke of a footballer).

Either way though, Rio is absolutely no threat to Yun. Neither is Hill or Traore.

                    Absolutely.

Even Harry has to be able to see that. Personally. I'd play Onuoha there but Dunne has been reliable and he gives 100%. He's used to scrapping for points and being in relegation battle. Rio isn't cut out for that kind of thing.

                    |I think Ryan just hates all things QPR to be honest with you.

Ok so lets assume he's nailed on. Is there any reason to back QPR's defence though? or can we only expect a bunch of 1pters.

                    See above.

You clearly don't like QPR so don't pick their players.

But they shut out Sunderland and Villa at home so they aren't exactly immune to keeping clean sheets are they.

Not sure what you're expecting in terms of value for a £3.9m defender. He won't give you Baines like output but you can play him at home and he'll get you points.

                        Fair enough.

But Yun is a starter priced at £3.9m, If you need to free up funds you can buy him and you'll have points off the bench if needed. Likely to get a CS too in this run of games.

Same with the other options you mentioned. They'll do a job for you at a very low price.

You don't buy a 3.9 defender for CSs. You get him because he should play 90, he might be picked for your team every now and then and he enables you to spend more elsewhere.

Sure but would it not be better to have a 4.5m player instead who is nailed on over the busy Xmas period who will get more points? That is the question. I still don't think Yun is guaranteed to play every game during that busy period

Yes, if you have 4.5 to spend then there is a lot more choice so you should get someone better. Depends on the budget available to get your star player in.

I see it as a good enough trade-off if you really want Baines (or whoever) and it's the only way to afford him.

I've got Hutton, Dummett and Wisdom in this price range. I'll only be looking to play one each week so might get away with it.

Just noticed that Wasilewski is getting starts for Leicester now; he's only 3.9m. Don't know whether this will continue though and they're pretty awful in defence...though their next two fixtures are decent.

Interesting spot, is he the guy that replaced Moore? probably a bit premature to assume he's nailed on. I don't think its wise to have defenders who aren't nailed on leading into the busy xmas schedule.

Couldn't tell you but that sounds likely. Yeah, you'd need to be desperate for the cash to go scraping the bottom of that barrel but I seem to remember he used to be OK for Poland, even had a bit of a goal threat. Probably getting on now though and the team just don't defend well as a unit.

Yes he has replaced Moore. I can safely say I am the only Wasilewski owner on these forums as I brought him in ages and ages ago when he was one of the only 3.9s to fund a double move. He's played well last couple games I can see him keeping Moore out of the team for a bit even though Moore has youth on his side. He was dropped for being poor not too long ago. But again, who knows..Moore could be back in for him after a good week of training at this point.

At 4m you are not going to get too many nailed on defenders in cast iron defence. The only difference over Xmas is less there own rotation threat which depends on the individual but more that some of your other squad may get rotated meaning you actually forced to play them. There is a case to go 4.5ish for your 4th df, not for your 5th df who even with the rotation most likely won't get more than one game anyway.

I have Hutton, wisdom and dummet currently. No plans to change unless they are no longer first choice and would potentially limp to January even then

Having those 3 will cause you problems over xmas imo. I think there will be times where you will struggle to field 3 defenders. I think the safer bet is to get a 4.5 defender as a 4th defender along with Duff who is nailed on

just remembered that I do have a plan for this which I actually stated on here just yesterday to swap one of those for azpi in 2 weeks time (paid for by pelle > Austin).

That's clearly a significant defensive upgrade, not so sure a sideways steps to duff or a 4.5 is as worthwhile

    Bottom of last page:

Not sure what to do with my 2FT

    Krul
    Baines, Chambers, Chester
    Sanchez, Chadli, Siggurdson, Tadic
    Costa, Aguero, Pelle

    Bench: Foster; Wanyama, Duff, Naylor

    2FT 0itb

    Thinking:
    A) Baines & Tadic -> Hazard & Yun/Dummett (plan is to get Baines back after downgrading Pelle to Austin in 2 weeks)
    B) Chester -> Yun / Dummett and save the second transfer.
    C) Something else as I am not convinced with any of them

Not selling Tadic a week before his big haul went well for me.

Not jumping on the Sanchez bandwagon and keeping faith in Sterling instead has been a complete and utter unmitigated f'n disaster though!

But where do the numbers come into play? For instance: Southampton is -213.

Till January, it is true. Unless you think QPR have a strong defence that is.

          1. They have a strong chance, with their HOME games.

Vlaar is back to Villa, that changes things. QPR have the worst defence in the league, fixtures can't change that.

I'm not big on H/A rotation myself. Last season Villa were nice and predictable, getting cleansheets against lower table teams be it home or away. With nicer fixtures now I'm hoping they settle back into that groove.

    c) Azpilicueta (best team/draw/player - but will have to wait an extra week on Costa)

I have no FT this GW so that would be a -8 this week. Which I think is unwise. And next week ADM's fixtures are mint... worth it then for -4?
OR do I take out ADM this week on a hit in preparation for Pelle > Costa next week??
A WC would also allow me to get rid of JWP (who I lost £.2 on already) and get Boyd et al.

    This week: save
    Next week: Bego>Guzan & Tadic > Downing
    Week after: Pelle>Costa & Clyne>Azpil for a -4

Obviously this is depenant on injuries and form etc. Fairly drastic to get rid of all 3 Soton, but they will drop in price so I can get them back. Thanks

I know. And most people here said Costa is worth even for a hit. I can agree to that, but at the expense of Pelle vs Villa? I'm not too sure about that one. Pelle is the focus of Soton's attack, and if Tadic is out, the team will rely on him more. Heck even Pelle could take the PK if Tadic is out! otoh, Chelsea can find other viable source of gials in Haz, Oscar (you name 'em).

It's a toss really. Good luck mate.

Nice. Want him myself but too many transfers havento put it on the back burner. Hoping he can stave off his 'imminent explosion' for a few more weeks ๐Ÿ˜†

Haz vs. Fab and Rooney vs. Costa will be a couple that will define my season.

So Fab's selling price is back to where I got him, 9.6 mil. And I sold Hazard for 9.9m, for him. ๐Ÿ™ Definitely bad business from me.

Kansas City - best Rush defense in the NFL not surrendered a rushing TD all season
Oakland Raiders 0-10 and the worst rushing team in the league.

So naturally, Oakland just go and score the first rushing TD against Kansas this season.

Its not the right move unless that haul comes. Waiting a while for that. What if it never comes? Says the nervous cesc owner
