Captain Sensible – Gameweek 12

Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this Thursday evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

This week’s Captain Poll is a two-way tussle for our attentions between Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero. With 41% of the votes cast so far, the Chelsea striker slightly edges it ahead of a home encounter against West Brom – he’s scored six times in five appearances at the Bridge, failing to net just once, and faces a defence that has conceded twice in all but one of the last five Gameweeks.

Aguero has been selected by 38% as Man City prepare for the visit of Swansea. The Argentine has failed to score in two of five appearances in front of his own fans this term, though with nine goals and 57 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game in the last six, he’s the man in form. The Swans have been decent on their travels at the back, though, earning a clean sheet in two of their last three away matches.

Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez could be real differential armband options for the Gameweek ahead. The Chelsea midfielder is seeking his third straight double-figure haul at the Bridge, whilst six goals in his last four underline Sanchez’s form as United’s patched-up rearguard limp into the Emirates.

The avalanche of votes for Costa and Aguero leaves little interest elsewhere. Cesc Fabregas has mustered 1% of votes – mirrored by Southampton’s Graziano Pelle for Monday evening’s trip to Villa. The Italian has failed to score in his last three now, but with the Midlands outfit sweating on the fitness of a number of defenders, Pelle’s owners will be giving him one last chance before the fixtures turn nasty. There’s no doubt he’s better in front of his own fans, though – the summer signing has mustered just one goal and a single assist on the road compared to five goals and three assists at St Mary’s.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not really been on it the past week or so...is there any news on Cesc though? Dropping tonight and may influence my transfers.

I'm hoping it's a good sign there's been no big 'out for 4 weeks' style reporting from some of the crap papers. Had a rest over the international break too.

But wait for press conference, Jose is always clear and transparent...

Yeah he doesn't do much, but I can't see Chambers getting more than 1/2 anyone, and could end up on minus if he has to deal with ADM down his flank. Good thinking, if it looks like Cork'll start you have very little to lose. Good luck.

The number of people bringing in QPR defenders is baffling. Someone was even doubling up earlier.

Most goals conceded in the league, 7 goals against in the last 4 during their 'form' period, and Newcastle (a), Swansea (a) and Everton (a) all to come in the next 5. A clean sheet against a lacklustre Aston Villa who couldn't score against anyone is hardly worth Yun and Caulker being mentioned in every other post!

      • 10 Years

I don't own any but they have some good home fixtures coming up and yun is a good enabler for better, more expensive players

Agreed, but Yun is cheap and can be used judiciously (GW 15,17,19,21..=BUR/WBA/CPL/bur). For instance I intend to keep Clyne and he has MU/EVE/CHE/mu these GWs

I'm the one that's going to double up. They're cheap, have good fixtures and allow me to get Baines while keeping Ivan, ADM, Sanchez, Aguero and Costa. Handy escape route from triple Saints defence.

I've noted their home fixtures. I guess as an enabler they're not bad for those 4. I had Green earlier in the season, I really can't stand having defenders from whipping boys but if Harry turns Loftus into a tough place to go (he did at my club Pompey once upon a time), you could get a few points I suppose!

Can't say I'm confident in it but they have improved since dropping Rio and the home fixtures are very good until January. A double QPR cleanie for 8.4m provides a certain satisfaction! 🙂

    Best uberish D options available...

    1. Trippier/Duff - Great fixtures, look like tightening up with injured players getting fit. Trippier brings attacking and BAP potential for the extra .6m but Duff may be the better bet.

    2. Hutton - Great fixtures as well playing in an ultra defensive team. Benteke's return may take some of the pressure off the back 4 as well

    3. Yun - Decent fixtures and looking to be on the up. Yun is ultra cheap at 3.9m and takes the odd FK as well. Great value.

    4. Dummett - Questions over the Toon D due to injuries and concern that Santon may take his spot the only reason I rank him this low. Newcastle with decentish fixtures and looking pretty resilient.

    5. McNair - Definitely the punt of the lot but he's been a revelation this season. If he retains his spot United have decent fixtures and with Carrick back he could be very good value at 4.4m.

Moses could be a decent punt, and obviously kun gives you a secure captain choice if you don't have one already.

But is it worth losing Fab to get in Aguero? Considering Chelsea's good fixtures

I think so, but I'm not the biggest fan of him.

I stickied a tweet from Ben Dinnery on Downing earlier. I may have jumped the gun there so apologies for that folks. He's not definitely out. 😳

Depends what he does this season. That was the whole point of the loan rather than the purchase.

If he did manage to get a bit of form and show he's not made of glass then he'd be off to Madrid.

I cant afford Austin, options under 5.3 and pretty poor, someone like fletcher maybe short term anyway

I'd probably go Costa and Steven Fletcher. Pelle might be worth keeping one last week though.
