In a somewhat contentious move, Tottenham Hotspur fought off competition from Southampton last week to land Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld.

Speaking to the north London club’s official site in the wake of his transfer, Alderweireld – who had previously looked poised to make a permanent switch to Southampton – cited Spurs’ strong Belgian contingent as a major factor in his decision:

“I’m very proud to become a Spurs player. I’m very happy to be here and I hope to have a wonderful time with this team. From the beginning I knew a lot about it (the club) from Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli. It’s a big club and it’s always been a dream to play at a club like Spurs. I know the players from the national team and I played with Jan at Ajax; we had a central defensive partnership. It’s nice when you join another club that you know a couple of players.”

The History

Brought up in Antwerp, Belgium, Alderweireld trained at the youth academy of local club Germinal Beerschot for five years before making the switch to Ajax in 2004. Having earned his senior debut midway through the 2008/09 season, he went on to become a regular starter the following campaign, notching two goals and a pair of assists in 31 league outings. Playing alongside Vertonghen in central defence, Alderweireld was named as the Ajax Talent of the Year.

In his next three seasons at the Amsterdam Arena, Alderweireld chalked up five goals and six assists across 88 league appearances, with the Eredivisie giants claiming a trio of successive title wins during that period. The Belgium international subsequently courted attention from a host of European clubs in the summer of 2013, ultimately resulting in a move to Atletico Madrid.

With Miranda and Diego Godin forming Diego Simeone’s first choice centre-back pairing throughout the 2013/14 La Liga season, Alderweireld was restricted to just 10 starts (one goal). In pursuit of first-team football, he then teamed up with Southampton on a year-long loan deal prior to the start of the 2014/15 Premier League campaign. In 26 starts for the Saints, Alderweireld greatly impressed but mustered just a single goal in terms of attacking returns.

Alderweireld has represented Belgium at every level and been a regular starter in the senior squad since 2011, notching one goal in 48 appearances. In light of the fact that Vincent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen are the preferred centre-back partnership, Spurs’ latest recruit primarily operates as a right-back for the Red Devils.

The Prospects

Notwithstanding the recent arrival of Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer at White Hart Lane, Alderweireld looks tailor-made to partner his countryman Vertonghen in central defence. Considering that a criticism oft levelled at Spurs’ rearguard last term was their lack of communication and understanding, the duo’s experience playing alongside each other at Ajax should stand them in good stead.

Delving into his Fantasy prospects, Alderweireld’s frequency of attempts (one every 131.8 minutes) was only bettered by Danny Rose (103.7 minutes) among the Lilywhites squad last term, while no Spurs defender trumped his seven shots on target. Nonetheless, given that Rose recorded three goals and four assists in the previous campaign – executing key passes (one every 92 minutes) at over three times the rate of Alderweireld (339 minutes) – the much-improved left-back presents a greater case for inclusion.

If new recruit Kieran Trippier can earn a starting berth in pre-season, his underlying statistics portend a strong attacking output. The ex-Clarets star fashioned key passes (one every 57 minutes) at over twice the rate of incumbent right-back Kyle Walker (125.4 minutes). Furthermore, he carded more than double the volume of successful crosses (91) than Spurs’ full roster of defenders mustered last season (43), illustrating his potential to assist the likes of Harry Kane.

Crucially, though, the 5.0-priced Alderweireld is cheaper than Rose, Trippier and Vertonghen and could appeal to those who reckon Pochettino’s side will prove more resilient this time around. Certainly, considering that Spurs tallied just nine clean sheets, ranked fifth-bottom for goals conceded (53) and conceded the second highest number of big chances (74) over the course of the season, it’s fair to say there is plenty of room for improvement. Pochettino helped Southampton rack up 15 clean sheets in 2013/14 before moving to the Lane, so there’s hope that Alderweireld’s arrival can help remedy their backline woes.

An opening day trip to United, allied with a Gameweek 6 clash against City may deter many from investing in the Tottenham backline, though with three kind home clashes (STO, EVE, CPL) allied with trips to Leicester and Sunderland over that period, we should get an idea of their potential.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    UFPL discussion

The Ultimate Fantasy Premier League is now open. I for one am signed up again, after finally getting to grips with the game during the second half of the season. At times I preferred it to FPL and enjoyed the nuances of making transfers within the Gameweek.

This season there has been a key change with the points penalties for making loan moves outside of its transfer windows reducing dramatically. They will now be a vital and well used part of the game after being ignored by many last year.

So for those who are going to play again or looking to play for the first time I thought I’d start this hot topic for general UFPL chat and to discuss key players to get in and strategies.

Also I’ve compiled a handy list of those teams that have the most matches on Sundays and Mondays – and thereby can be drafted in if your Saturday players fail. These late gameweek matches have only been announced up to Gameweek 7 so far.

Those with four Sun or Mon games between Gwk 1-7 are Liverpool and Southampton

Those with three Sun or Mon games between Gwk 1-7 are Ars, WBA, ManC, Palace.

Teams that play six out of seven on a Saturday (Matchday 1) are Lei, Sun, Swa, B’Mouth, Stoke, Villa. These are the teams you can take risks with if you have stocked up on good MAtchday 2 and 3 options.

Good stuff. What I also do is look at a few players who are for the first 4 GWs only, and then look at potential replacements for GW5 onwards.

There's more on it here. But basically you can draft in a loan player for one, two or three gameweeks for a pts deduction. It was far too pricey before, can't remember exactly but I think it was 10 or 12 pts for three weeks. Just wasn't worth it outside of a double. Now the pts deductions have been put right down...so for example spending three pts to get Aguero in for one great home gameweek is very doable and could reap huge rewards.

        1 Gameweek – 3 points per player
        2 Gameweeks – 5 points per player
        3 Gameweeks – 6 points per player

I won't be playing this year, Joe. Found it quite dull. Also, it lacks the competitive element because my ML rivals do not play, which takes away 90% of the fun for me. Good luck though!

I love this version of the game and even flirted with the top 3 mid way through last season. The probable absence of Kun and Alexis at the start presents the opportunity for a balanced team. Tips from me are...
      - go for at least 3 or 4 cheap stikers, Jerome, Wilson et al as you can only play 3 so you waste cash having 3 biggies.
      - Focus on your defence and do not pick players who might get rotated. Better to spend £4.5m amd get a flukey 6 pointer than a no show £4.0m player who you just cant get rid of.
      - Plan part of your team around players in Europe to get the variance in gameweek players and
      - save those transfers till the end of the transfer window as you will regret using them early.
High maintenance game but you really feel like youre managing it as opposed to the fire and forget approach to some games.

      Thanks for the post Jonty.

Got to say that halfway through last season UFPL became my main fantasy game. Really got into the format and it felt more rewarding than the normal FPl game...mainly cos there was a decent prize to play for and like Stanley Laurel, I spent a cuttla weeks in the top 3-4 overall, which peaked my interest.

It is, as many have said, a real undertaking. If you are go a play properly, it many take over your life more than standard FPL. Not one for the casual, which is another reason I preferred it - less players, more competitive.

Look forward to the season ahead, prob with UFPL as the primary game for me.

Never comment on here, but I should.

I also started preferring UFPL last season. Only the competitiveness and email group for my main mini league in FPL gave FPL the edge. I was in the Top 100 going into March last season, but made some bad January transfers and they caught up with me. Loaning in Benteke for *that* DGW saved me falling too far, but the damage was done. It was actually TEN points for a four-week loan last season. Heavy. Four points for just one GW. New rules were welcome.

Is there a correct formula to play the game? Big hitters still score big points like in the main game, but I had too many non-playing or rubbish 4/4.5 players last season. Less big hitters and a good all-round squad? I'm tempted to risk it and go for that tactic this season. Also, one bit of advice for new players this season... Save at least 0.5 in the bank, preferably 1m. Makes loans far easier. For example, if you spent your whole budget and Rooney was injured for six weeks, you wouldn't be able to do a straight swap for Costa. You would have to do a second loan to afford him.

I took both UFPL and FPL very seriously last season as I changed jobs to a one that gave me some free time. I did come 6th OR in the UFPL after being 1st OR around March. But it was nerve-wrecking that i decided to play it this year relaxingly and have fun with punts.

Come on now, you should know that we can't just start all our new signings all at once from GW1. There is a lot of new faces and players who have never played in the PL before. Don't underestimate LVG's propensity to bench big name signings and give guys like Young and Valencia a go

Shaw was injured/out of shape last year and ADM slotted straight in, that's when he performed his best.

There is a possibility but i don't see it in this case, I guess we will know more when Utd's preseason kicks off.

ADM cost 60m so LVG would have looked pretty foolish if he was to ease him in. In the end it became obvious that ADM is human and was struggling to adjust and even now he is still enduring 'the adjustment period'

Wanyama for me. Nailed imo and if he comes off the bench he may give you 3 rather than 2 if Saints somehow keep their defensive stride.

Was thinking Anya myself but he's being played at LB in pre season, Wanyama will get you 1-3 points most weeks. Still trying to figure out my 5th mid as well, trying to stretch the budget to allow for maybe 5.5 (thinking possibly grealish).

Best of luck mate. Not impossible that it works out, it's just hard to go against years of experience playing 3 forwards.

You only get three spots for gawd sake, why limit yourself to just two!!

should be. He will have a full pre season and the pre season games will be a good indication. WIll be very very good at that price. Plenty of clean sheets and the odd assist

Not done this in FPL before, but with an early WC very possible I'm considering sticking two 4m defenders in and going with a defence like:

    Cech

    Darmian Azpi Matthews (or Huth)

and leaving it for 4 GW or whatever.

Means rest of squad can look like:

      Fabs Sterling Walcott Chadli 4.5

      Costa Rooney Sakho

Early days might be a bit shaky. LVG might have to teach some of these guys his filoshofee, that might take a while to learn.

Got lost on last article, any thoughts on these:

    Ruddy - Rudd
    Mert - Sakho - Huth - Francis - Coates
    Hazard - Rambo - Ritchie - Wanyama - Bentaleb
Aguero (if fit) - Rooney - Giroud

I'm planning on a WC after GW4, never done the WC so early but plenty of people seem to swear by it, plus the rule changes. Any thoughts? Ta.

Mané's a tad too expensive for me when you can get proven FPL talents at 8.5.

JRod is worth monitoring. I'm keeping a close eye over pre-season. Potential bargain.
