FA Cup Scout Notes – Fifth Round – Sunday

Dimitri Payet and Emmanuel Emenike both score twice as West Ham ease past Blackburn. Eden Hazard provides a goal and two assists as Chelsea crush an under-strength Man City, whilst Martin Kelly fires Palace into the last eight at Tottenham’s expense.

Payet at the double

Dimitri Payet scored two spectacular goals and grabbed an assist as West Ham United dished out a 5-1 thrashing to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Allied with his 13-point haul last Gameweek, the 8.2-priced midfielder is in fine form ahead of a favourable home clash against Sunderland. That being said, Watford’s triumph over Leeds on Saturday already ensured that the Hornets’ visit to the Boleyn Ground in Gameweek 30 will be postponed, diminishing Payet’s appeal on the Fantasy market – nonetheless, more than 69,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have snapped up the Frenchman ahead of the Black Cats showdown.

Emmanuel Emenike also bagged a brace in his maiden start for the Hammers – given that Enner Valencia (ankle) and Andy Carroll (hip) are nursing knocks, the Nigerian marksman, who is priced at 5.0 in FPL, is likely to lead the line against the Black Cats.

In the wake of an impactful cameo against Norwich City last time out, Victor Moses opened the scoring with a drilled strike. If the fit-again Manuel Lanzini – who was deployed in the 67th minute and went on to card an assist – is handed a starting role next time out, Moses and Michail Antonio look set to compete for a wide berth in Slaven Bilic’s preferred 4-2-3-1 set-up. Antonio filled in at right-back against Blackburn as Joey O’Brien and James Tomkins are injured and Sam Byram is cup-tied, having previously played for Leeds in an earlier round.

Cheikhou Kouyate received his marching orders for denying a goal scoring opportunity, ruling him out of the Sunderland encounter. However, Bilic confirmed post-match that he intends to appeal the decision and believes the Irons can present a strong case.

Spurs slip to defeat

Tottenham Hotspur succumbed to a 1-0 home loss at the hands of Crystal Palace. Mauricio Pochettino shuffled the starting XI following their draw at Fiorentina earlier in the week, dropping Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen to the bench.

On the injury front, Hugo Lloris remained sidelined with the shoulder complaint he sustained against Manchester City, while Mousa Dembele was withdrawn at the break with a minor groin problem. Spurs’ last two defeats arrived when the ex-Fulham recruit was hamstrung by injury, so investors in their offense will be hopeful of a swift recovery.

As a consequence of Spurs’ exit from the FA Cup, their road tie against Aston Villa in Gameweek 30 will go ahead as planned. Given that Harry Kane (41% ownership), Alderweireld (42%) and Dele Alli (31%) are among the most popular Fantasy recruits, many managers will find it far easier to cobble together a full team in three weeks’ time.

Kelly wins it for Palace

Martin Kelly steered the Eagles into the quarter finals with a thunderous effort. Wilfried Zaha – who notched two assists in his previous four league starts and netted the winner against Stoke in the Fourth Round – underlined his good form with the assist. Valued at 5.3, the fleet-footed winger could well factor into our thinking for future double Gameweeks.

Yannick Bolasie made a second-half cameo, priming him for a return to league action at West Bromwich Albion next weekend. Nonetheless, his differential potential is curtailed by the fact that Palace’s trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 30 is set to be rescheduled in response to their win over Spurs. On that note, the ownerships of Scott Dann (23%), Chris Smalling (25%) and David De Gea (11%) face the prospect of benching considerable funds during the blank.

Hazard steers Blues to victory

Chelsea put Manchester City to the sword in a 5-1 win at Stamford Bridge. Eden Hazard showed shoots of recovery with a goal and pair of assists, while Diego Costa complemented his assist against Paris Saint-Germain with a goal on Sunday afternoon. Willian, Gary Cahill and Bertrand Traore also graced the scoresheet, with Oscar claiming an assist.

Speaking of Oscar, the Brazil international came up short from the penalty spot for the second time this term, perhaps giving Guus Hiddink food for thought with regards to the Chelsea spot-kick pecking order.

Chelsea’s passage through to the last eight of the FA Cup results in the postponement of their road clash against Liverpool in Gameweek 30. From the Blues’ perspective, Willian is the second-most popular midfielder with regards to transfers in (57,000) this week, while Costa (46,000) is the third-most popular forward, which throws up a dilemma for those new owners. Moreover, Cesar Azpilicueta’s 14% ownership might need to do some tinkering ahead of that date.

The postponement of Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool means that the latter – like Everton – play just twice over the next four Gameweeks. Considering that one of those match-ups is a visit from Manchester City, Roberto Firmino’s 17% ownership will likely be exploring other avenues. On the flip side, both Merseyside clubs will now enjoy two double Gameweeks at some point down the line, which encourages us to keep tabs on the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho following their return from the treatment room.

Pellegrini rings the changes as City tumble out

Manuel Pellegrini made nine alterations for the Sky Blues’ trip to the capital, ensuring that his first team are well rested for the first leg of their Champions League match-up against Dinamo Kiev on Wednesday.

The likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany all played no part as the Chilean handed five debutants a chance to impress at the Bridge.

Ultimately, City’s defeat to Chelsea means that their trip to Norwich City in Gameweek 30 remains intact. This will be music to the ears of Aguero’s 30% ownership and may persuade many to hold now – a win for City yesterday would have handed Aguero two blanks in the next four, bearing in mind he already misses out this upcoming weekend due to City’s Capital One Cup final clash with Liverpool.

    Right then, likely DGW34 fixtures:

    Arsenal vs Crystal Palace
    Bournemouth vs Liverpool
    Chelsea vs Man City
    Everton vs Southampton
    Leicester vs West Ham
    Man Utd vs Aston Villa
    Newcastle vs Swansea
    Norwich vs Sunderland
    Stoke vs Spurs
    West Brom vs Watford

    Man Utd vs Crystal Palace
    Sunderland vs Everton
    West Ham vs Watford
    Arsenal vs West Brom
    Liverpool vs Chelsea

I had planned to use my triple captain chip this week, leaving bench boost after a wildcard for the GW36/37 DGW.

But there's no obvious choice here.

Bad fixtures for Chelsea, no obvious Arsenal selection and Man Utd are the kings of troll this year.

    Any thoughts?

        Quite pleased with it actually!

GW30 is wrapped up, so it's all about DGW and chip usage now.

I think GW34 has to be bench boost as by the time we get to GW37 everything will be end of season screwy anyway. So the you're hanging your 3C chip on just the one set of fixtures then.

            Interesting view.

My issue with this, though, is that it will not be as much of a differential as a BB with fewer DGW teams.

Erm, you could say that it would be even more of a differential if you played your bench boost in a single gw. Even more so in GW30!

Being a bit silly there, but different isn't always better!

Yes but in a single week is silly because you don't get the benefit of the double game time.

Might be more valuable when there are fewer teams with double fixtures?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Play it safe or go for a luxury transfer - GWK 30 planning

With the news that Spurs are out of the cup and therefore will play in GWK 30 many of our fears around fielding an XI in GWK 30 have been eased.

With four free transfers remaining many now find themselves with eight or nine players already in place for GWK 30 and the luxury of being able to use one or two transfers on players that face a blank that week.

So are you going to take advantage of this change in fortunes and look towards getting in a player from the ranks of say West Ham or Chelsea - who definitely miss GWK 30?

Or are you concerned that with suspensions and injuries it would be best to play it safe, banking free transfers where possible and focusing on GWK 30 players regardless with transfers.

Here's one scenario for taking a luxury transfer

For me I'm seriously considering Aguero to Costa. He'll definitely get more in GWK 27 (unless he gets a red of course 😉 ) Plus in GWK 28 he has a great fixture and is captain material. This is in a week where Aguero faces Liverpool away. Then I'd get Aguero back in GWK 29 for a home clash for Villa, where he looks an armband shoo in. That costs two transfers...leaving me two left to bring me up to a full XI in GWK 30. The advantage of this for me is that I keep JKing, who is getting sub appearances and saves me a benching headache each week.

What luxury moves are you considering?

Here's one scenario for playing it safe

Upgrade your non playing fifth midfielder or player who has a blank coming up to one with good fixtures and definitely playing in GWK 30. Arnautovic perhaps. Sigurdsson is another. And for those confident that Spurs can continue their fine form amongst Europa Lg matches - Eriksen to add to a template that already includes Alli and Kane.

What safe moves are you considering?

Well i am considering Ivanovic > VvD and rolling the other FT and keeping Kun. Dont mind him vs Liverpool. Wasting FT at this stage i think is useless since in gw27 until gw 29 its only 7 days. FT;s will come in handy for whatever comes up.

As dull as this sounds I'm looking to do Myhill -> Joe Hart this week.

This gives me a good rotation between Hennessey and Hart and gets me around both the blank weeks, while potentially setting me up for two goalkeepers in gw34 if needed.

Yes, they're not going to be playing title rivals every week, in fact at all now until gw37 and yesterday doesn't count as only 2/3 of those players from the Chelsea game will being playing in front of Hart in the league.

The luxury transfer is definitely an option considering how few injuries there seem to have been to key players this season.

HOWEVER, switching Kun in and out definitely classes as trying to be clever, and will inevitably come back and bite you in the arse.

I've heard that before but many were saying that it was a good move before. I did too - but I was too scared to make the move myself. Costa was the better striker over those last two games on paper - that's why many like myself didn't captain Aguero then.

Personally am quite pleased that Spurs got through - have had an injury crisis with Zouma and my 5th mid being ruled out, so I can plan their replacements (Fuchs in for Zouma, simple, and a 5th mid with a game in 30) without worrying about fielding the XI.

As for luxury transfers, some provision for Swansea players looks likely given their strong fixtures around GW 29-31. Maybe Williams and Siggy.

He didn't get on the scoresheet but I really liked the look of Pedro yesterday. Extremely positive play and he could have had a brace.

He came to the PL with a pretty strong history from La Liga and he started with a bang (13 point debut) before Chelsea's woes derailed him.

Is that a ridiculous luxury? Not only does he have no GW30 or PL form but he's also a potential rotation risk.

Not pushed on that myself Rosc..

I think Pedro benefitted from being a part of the Messi / Iniesta / Xavi / Villa golden years so those stats may be a bit inflated..

Could be a good shout alright, but the rotation risk just about edges him out of my thoughts.

Currently tripled on ARS with Bellerin / Ozil / Sanchez, so at this point still a bit short for GW30.

Cresswell > Van Dijk next week.
Probably Sanchez > Sigurdsson the week after.

      Posted this earlier. Reposting.

Note: i started writing my thoughts down and it turned into a really long post. My aim is to encourage a discussion.

So the thinking should be to get exactly 11 players and 11 only for GW30 and no more correct? If we plan to get to GW34 without any WCs?

I'm thinking of making a model of what to do with players from each team and your thoughts would be appreciated.

ARS - Have decent fixtures around GW30 and a DGW in 34 in all likelihood. Probably a DGW soon too. Definitely hold Mesut for the value attached. Even Bellerin/Kos is a hold imo. They have the most number of home games remaining FYI. (I am really looking for a window to buy Alexis. Explosion Imminent.)
      AVL - Hold/Sell
BOU - Hold but don't buy. Have decent fixtures until 30 but poor fixtures after that. I would buy LEI/SOU/TOT players over BOU players due to decent fixtures post 30 as well.
CHE - The inform team with great fixtures. A real dilemma. If you are managing 11 players for GW30, i would indulge in buying Chelsea assets (Costa + def). They are good to play the current weeks and make for good bench fodder in 30 as you will want them for the DGWs.
      CPL - Buy after 32.
EVE - Sell (now or after avl) depending on team. Blank in 27 and 30.
LEI - Form. Fixtures. No blank. I think i prefer a LEI defender to a saints one due to their fixtures. Definite blind buy. Triple up.
LIV - Sell Moreno. Firmino could be a hold. a blank in 27 & 30 but 2 DGWs after could mean that he would be a good bench player to have in 30 for weeks after. That said, 31 and 32 fixtures are poor.
MCI - Hold. Play in 30 with a DGW after 30.
MUN - Hold. Again good bench fodder for 30 as they have good fixtures around the blank. Martial and a defender could come into play.
NEW - Hold. They play in 30 and have a DGW after.
      NOR - Sell.
SOT - Buy. They have a clean slate in terms of no blanks. I would not buy beyond a starting xi for GW30.
STO - Buy. Arnie makes a good 5th mid. Good fixtures around 30 and no blanks.
SUN - Khazri is a great 5th mid to have if u can afford 11 without him for 30. Can easily bench for 30 and a good differential for the DGWs. Has good 31 and 32 games as well.
SWA - Buy. I would maybe buy Siggy/Ayew over Arnie because of his fixtures 29 onwards.
TOT - Buy. Form. Fixtures. No blanks. Motivation to play for something.
WAT - Sell. Blank in 30. No form.
      WBROM - Hold/Sell. 65% chance its a blank in GW30. Poor fixtures.
WHAM - Hold. Don't buy. Blank in GW30 and okish fixtures. Payet -> Siggy for many in 29 as i see it.

Strategy: Even if you have 1 or 2 less for GW30, i think it is fine. Make sure you have the players in for GW30 with the highest upside. The highest upside teams for me are: TOT, LEI, MCI. If you have Vahrez, Kane, Alli, Kun, this should cover everyone's captains for GW30. I would personally be okay fielding a defender or 2 less if it means getting a full 11 for GW 34 without hits. Imagine that you are gambling and getting 11 players for 30 (Think of additional 2 defenders that you would be playing over most). A defender gets 6 points for a cleanie. If you are wasting a transfer for a defender you are 100% doing a -4 for DGW34. Instead bank on a lack of cleansheet where there is a lesser chance you are missing out on four points.

As i see it, now its possible to get 10-11 tops for GW30. Not 12,13,14 or 15 for GW30. Take a hit or two post GW30 so that you can get 11 for GW34. Triple Captain during GW34 and WC after 34 for the future blanks and DGWs.

Problem with that is that i think DGW34 is the ideal time to bench boost since more teams will be playing in a DGW and there are lesser chances of the main players being benched.

I just wanted to start a discussion on the same. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

gw35 blank will involve lesser teams than gw30 blank
the move everyone is watching is wc on the 33 and bench boost on the 34

I've been relived by Spurs as I had tripled up on Spurs.
Now the only 2 players that won't play for me are Payet and Cresswell + Ozil and Cech probably.
With a saved FT, I think I am ok for GW30 as I won't be selling Payet, unless he's injured.

My big prob now is to get enough players for the DGW. Still not sure if I'll need to use my WC before the DGW! 🙁

following fa cup results, jonty strategy looks solid, aguero out on 27, aguero in on 29, allowing 3 forwards on gw27, which could be inself a differential from all those aguero lovers

It's all very well playing it safe for GW30, but leaving yourself the bare 11 makes no allowance for rotations or late injuries.

So it may be considered a luxury to take a hit or two to have bench players 27 and 30 I think it's my preferred option.
Nothing worse than thinking you have 11 to find by the final game of the week you actually only have 9.

So much attention has been on just getting 11 players for gw30 that the intervening weeks are being overlooked.

Quality is as important as quantity. I saw many on here yesterday were spouting nonsense about casuals, but IMO the expanded fixture selection enables FPL managers to think more carefully about who they want to get instead of hiw many they want to get. What could be more strategic and less casual than having options to try to get one over on the masses for the short run and still have to plan for the fixture chaos and DGWs in the 30s? Sounds like you are not a dead team in that scenario, not a casual.

So for me having both Aguero and Costa is the way to go. I will play 3-5-2 GW 27/30, and a 3-4-3 GW 28/29. Rotating the two expensive strikers for 27 and 30 means I won't have to waste a transfer getting them in or out.

I could play 11 comfortably this week, even without using my 1FT, but using it will allow me to use the full 7 attacking players.

I am now thinking luxury transfer, because when GW30 looked like carnage I felt I was being forced to do Firmino > Arnie/Shaqiri

I now intend to draft Khazri in for the next two (whm, CPM), before bringing in Siggy for a very kind run of NOR, bou, AVL

Not saying he definitely will, but Kun could easily put 3 past Mignolet imo, Liverpool are far from solid at the back..

I'm considering Payet/Ozil out for Khazri.

Yup, so does Payet (and probably Ozil)

        GW30 I'll have:

        Lloris - (Hennessey**)
        Alderweireld - Fuchs - VvD - (Bellerin** - Ivanovic**)
        Mahrez - Alli - Arnie - (Ozil** - Payet**)
        Kun - Vardy (Ighalo**)

So I'll get Khazri and 2 more GW30 players in before then 🙂

Aguero rarely gets huge hauls though away. Plus he will not be captained by many that week - which eases the fears of missing out. GWK 29 at home v Villa though could be a 20 pter that it would be foolish to miss out on though.

Khazri is another I'm looking at too for JKing. Really impressive start for him. I'm not so keen on Arnautovic - too much rotation threat still with Stoke attackers. I like Eriksen but Alli, Eriksen and Kane looks a little too much Spurs overkill for me over a period where fixtures aren't incredible.

Yup, an away haul seems unlikely for Kun but I'm still fancying him to get in amongst the action in the Liverpool game with his amount of shots and Migs amount of saves...

I'm really not keen on Arnautovic but I can't really ship him when I'm already struggling for non-blanking players 😐 I've been handcuffed to him since I got him... ugh..

Costa looks like getting points each match - he looked really up for it yesterday and in recent gameweeks.

Pedro/now Haz/Fab and Willian all impressing in midfield makes it tough to nail down which will get the points.

    Butland
    Alde/Dawson/VVD/Nyom

    Butland

    Sanchez, Payet, Firmino, Mahrez, Stanislas
    Vardy, Kane

    (Hennessey) Aguero, Simpson, Souare

    A) Firmino > Eriksen or someone else

D-- Isn't Deli Alli a better option than Eriksen? At least based on the last couple of games?

That said, I'd recommend B if you aren't a fan of Alli and nudge you towards looking at Saint defenders? Spurs do have comparatively more difficult games going purely based on the ticker.

I'm hopeful that the Newcastle/City game will be rearranged soon, I can't see any reason why it can't be played in GW34, now that both teams are out of the FC Cup. A combined total of two player in our squads from those clubs, would make it possible for us to field a full 11 in GW30, and 11 DGW's in GW34, without taking hits or using WC.

AS of now, B, and optimize it for GW37, since you only have one gw after.
FOR DGW34, you have 4 gws after also, so you could risk having "bad team" in 4 gws, but taking some hits.
That's just my thinking right now, it will of course depend on which seems biggest.
