Scout Report – Davinson Sanchez

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer recruitment finally got underway with the signing of Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez for a reported club-record deal of £42 million.

The 21-year-old has signed a contract until 2023 and believes he can make a big contribution over the coming years:

“I’m strong in the tackle and I always try to play proper football. I think that those are my main characteristics. I think everybody knows what I can become and what I can bring to the club, such as my pace and my mental strength.”

And judging by the platitudes, his manager is also a huge admirer of the new boy’s abilities:

“From the beginning at Ajax, he showed his quality and personality. He was the best player at Ajax in his first season…he’s unbelievable. He speaks English very well and he is very comfortable with his new team-mates. He has all the characteristics for success here. He is so aggressive, so fast and he loves to play with risk at his back. It’s a massive opportunity because we believe he will be one of the best centre-backs in the world.”

The History

Sanchez began his youth career at America de Cali in his native Colombia, before he joined Atletico Nacional and made his professional debut in October 2013 at the age of 17.

It was only during 2016 that he started to establish himself in the first-team, and he was part of the side that won the Copa Libertadores.

Despite interest from Barcelona, Sanchez joined Ajax in June 2016.

He enjoyed a fantastic season, registering six goals and two assists in 32 league appearances, while he was part of the side that reached the final of the UEFA Europa League, only to lose 2-0 to Manchester United.

Sanchez was named the club’s Player of the Season and was again the subject of much interest before Spurs secured his signature.

After representing Colombia at U17, U20 and U23 levels, making 17 appearances in total, Sanchez was afforded his senior debut in a World Cup Qualifier against Argentina in November 2016.

The Prospects

In Sanchez, Spurs look to have brought in one of the most talented young central defenders in world football.

Blessed with pace, athleticism and aggression, he has the qualities to become a leading Premier League centre-half, though is versatile enough to also feature at right-back.

He is also comfortable in possession – he completed nearly 90% of his passes last season – and is adept at stepping out of defence and initiating attacks – traits that both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld possess.

Sanchez was part of an Ajax side that liked to play with a high line and that pressed the ball quickly when losing possession, so he should have few problems settling in at Spurs, who have similar footballing philosophies.

With Spurs also signing another central defender – Juan Foyth from Estudiantes – yesterday, it appears Mauricio Pochettino could now finally settle on a three-man defence.

The Spurs boss already has fellow Ajax graduates in Vertonghen and Alderweireld, along with Eric Dier, to call upon. But he has allowed Kevin Wimmer to join Stoke City.

Alderweireld has also yet to extend his contract beyond 2019, so the signings of Sanchez and Foyth are likely to have been made with that in mind.

Sanchez made his debut as a late substitute in the 1-1 draw with Burnley, and looks set to challenge for a starting role immediately.

He appears most likely to join Vertonghen and Alderweireld in the three-man backline, and interestingly comes in at the same price (6.0) as the two Belgians in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Sanchez could be of far more interest in the Sky Sports game, though, where he is priced at just 7.9 – far cheaper than both Vertonghen and Alderweireld – although Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier are available at 8.2 and 8.1 respectively.

As his goal tally from last season suggests, Sanchez offers a strong set-piece threat.

The 6ft 2in tall centre-back averaged a shot every 83.76 minutes last season, superior to both Alderweireld (93) and Vertonghen (206.93).

Interestingly, Sanchez also has the ability to bring the ball out of defence and shoot from distance, again characteristics shared with his new centre-back team-mates.

In terms of the trio’s defensive numbers, Vertonghen led the way in terms of successful aerial duels, winning 76% last season – better than both Sanchez (60%) and Alderweireld (48%).

It was Vertonghen who also impressed in terms of Bonus Points System (BPS) potential, averaging a clearance, block or interception every 9.89 minutes, superior to Sanchez (11.76) and Alderweireld (12.46).

Should Sanchez command a regular starting berth, then, his goal threat could make him a viable Fantasy option.

Spurs’ upcoming fixtures (eve SWA wha hud BOU) certainly boost their clean sheet potential.

But there are concerns surrounding their defensive prospects as they have conceded in each of their two matches at Wembley this season.

Pochettino’s side rank around mid-table for shots conceded inside the box (23), although they have given up just three big chances.

Losing the advantage of White Hart Lane is a concern as opposition teams seem to be relishing the opportunity to play at the home of English football.

There’s little doubt that Spurs have a very talented player on their hands in Sanchez but he may be the man to miss out whenever Pochettino opts for a four-man defence, with Alderweireld and Vertonghen safer bets at centre-half.

For now, then, Davies is currently our favoured route into the Spurs backline. The Welshman leads all defenders for key passes (nine), has a share of corners and has already found the net in Gameweek 1.

But once Danny Rose returns to full fitness, and providing Spurs can secure a deal for Paris Saint-Germain right-back Serge Aurier, rotation is likely to be a concern in the wing-back/ full-back positions.

      I'd suggest Kane + Alonso + 4.5'er in defence ......... i.e. have Alonso instead of a 7m midfielder

of course if you already have Alonso then this is a moot point.

Interesting to see if Sanchez is there to play alongside Vertongen and Alderwiereld, or on occasion instead of them. He certainly gives the squad more depth with which to compete on multiple fronts 🙂

      3 at the back?

There's probably some merit in doing some digging about relative performances of key Tottenham assets when they switched formation last season. Initial thoughts are it would benefit the full backs but I've a feeling it didn't...

It's a big fee for a bench warmer. I was wondering if it was a replacement for Toby as he still hasn't signed a new contract but there doesn't seem to be any speculation there.

I'd guess Sanchez will play 60-70% of PL games (i.e most of the time we play 3 at the back) and most of the domestic cup games.

Rubbish FL option at that price.

Toby's contract runs until 2019 at which point Spurs have an option for a further year, but if they exercise it, a £25m release clause kicks in.

Since Henderson plays in the deepest midfield role it would be absolutely incredible if Klopp decided to play a part-time winger there in his place. Liverpool need a proper defensive midfielder to fill the role and allow Henderson to step up field a bit. Although watching Henderson so far he seems to have been badly impacted by his ankle and is quite immobile.

Can would be just as makeshift as Henderson is as the defensive pivot.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Following on from the wildcard discussions one key theme emerged with those wildcarding saying that many issues regarding team sheets and form look to be already sorted- eg Firmino a sure starter on penalties in good form for Liverpool.

While others say it is too early and that there are still too many issues undecided and more evidence is required.

I thought it would be good to highlight here the outstanding important issues around how we construct our teams that still need a conclusion. What more evidence do you want?

Is it how Morata will fare with Hazard back in the team? Better or worse?

Or is it how Swansea's attack will line up regarding cheap enablers?

Or is it whether Sanchez has a future at Arsenal and whether the Gunners can be trusted for Fantasy assets?

Those are just some I've thought up quickly to get the discussion going

But for you - what are the main outstanding issues regarding team selection and form you want to see addressed - whether you have wildcarded or not?

    1. FPL_Hazards
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

I think we need to assess 3-4 GWs after the international break.

Fair enough if you have pressed already but if you've scored about 180+ pts, why bother?

The most important info we need is how will team sheets lineup with all these new signings. Whats the use of WCing and getting players who wont start and then will have to make a mini WC to transfer them out again.
Also Liverpools attack rotation with them playing 7 matches in 20-21 days and with all the signing theyre making.

As above - IF the Davinson Sanchez means Tottenham move to 3 at the back, how does this affect their other assets - do the fullbacks get forward even more? Does it help/hinder Eriksen/Alli? Does it make Son even more of a fringe player?

      1. built_this_city
        • 6 Years

Son will be worth it if Kane/Alli/Eriksen get injured, same as last season.

3-4-3/3-5-2 would help Rose I think

If I get time I'll try to look at how the Tottenham players performed in matches with different formations last season (quite likely I won't get round to it though 🙁 )

I've a feeling the fullbacks didn't actually offer any better returns when it was a three man defence but the sample size would be quite small, opposition needs to be taken into account, etc. so perhaps just a common sense assessment is more valuable.

Not wild carding until players move or stay at respective clubs, Morata looked good for Goal-assist plays but other then that he barely did anything. On other hand Pedro was looking really involved in the final third.

Also, how much will the various teams in Europe rotate their team around key matches and who gets benched? Does Salah always drop out for Liverpool or will everyone get rested occasionally, will Mkhitaryan get his gametime managed more once the CL starts, etc.

last year Spurs basically seemed to rotate the full-backs and that was it. Not a huge amount of cover for their key FPL assets and they do need to start winning games in the League.
Conte says he will rotate but looking at the squad that would probably be the more defensive players where they have plenty of cover.
Utd's key assets unlikely to be rotated - Jose not big on rotation. Lukaku doesn't move enough to get too tired !!
Liverpool will rotate but God knows how. Rested Mignolet last GW so he doesn't get tired!!

I think we can overthink CL rotation, especially in the group stages. It's not huge, it's not demanding for fresh footballers to play twice a week at the start of the season, and technically the group games at the beginning include ones that are loseable without it being a disaster.

What if the droppers are good though?

Salah dropped before GWK 3 - he then got 11 pts.

Ritchie dropped this week - despite offering great value, having good fixtures and playing well v West Ham.

Surely it would be better to get in good players and ditch bad ones - irrespective of what 4m people decide - most of whom don't really know what they are doing.

"Most of whom don't really know what they are doing" is key.

Many of us on here for example (me included) don't know what we're doing, using the conventional wisdom on which players are good wc options right now is dodgy.

This can and must be balanced ofcourse, but getting behind players with positive transfer in trends which also looks good after the first 2-3 gameweeks, and dropping the ones with negatives trends, gains you 1m instantly and 2m within a month, in my experience, which later wildcarders dont catch up, because you will also get in on the later risers with your free transfers and the odd hit.

Only future points knows what is best, there are many ways to get there, but this is how I do it. Never regrettet it, as it has taken me were I wanted to be come end of season.

I want to see if the August curse actually affected Kanes mindset, and whether he'll now be capable of banging them in against Everton now I've got rid of him.
Also, would be nice to see whether i can give a skip on Spurs defence, conceding at BUR is grim, maybe a sign of things to come.
And whether Hart keeps playing as the gk for West Ham. Then I will have to plan my captaincy rotation accordingly.

players that become great options if nailed - Fabregas, Willian/Pedro, Martial, Son, Abraham, City mid, OOP Stoke mid, Swans/Stoke 4.5 wing-backs, plenty more I'm sure. Fixture change for Rooney/Siggy/Keane & Vardy/Mahrez/Maguire. Sanchez, Hazard worth it? Pogba/Mkhi/Firmino the real deal? How will transfers effect lineups? Genuinely loads of reasons.

      wc'er, pretty set on the front 7, not expecting shocks today. So just the back 5 and keepers;

      NEW - goalkeeping situation
SWA - please don't sign another RB

MUN - Please PJones, don't be injured!

I think a lot more patience is required and not much benefit on w/c like some years past, Very few price changes so far either this week

Line ups as mentioned for me so many possible permutations

I was considering KDB out for Pogba and Lukuja out for Kane, would but now with Spurs possibly signing lorente that could impact Kane minutes in some easier Prem games around CL

Courtinho - will he stay or leave if stays then could be a good differential liv player at cheaper price in a week or 2 once gets playing again

I already hit the button because my team needed it... with at least 4 imminent transfers (only 1FT) before potential IB injuries. The defence was a mess. The only player I had that will definitely stay in my team is Tom Carroll.

I would like more info on Tammy, But I'm comfortable with the likes of Alexis/Ox/Morata etc and how they might affect any players I would realistically buy.

For me the big issues are only those involving big money. I have Kane, Lukaku, Eriksen, Mkhi from outset and Mane (in lieu of KDB a week ago). For me the question is what do I do with FPL assets I love, like Hazard, Sanchez, Coutinho and new players like Morata, Lacazette, fare. I have little or no evidence in that respect. And therefore, sitting tight makes sense. There are few big money asserts now and one of the other will not matter too much.

rotation principle for CL remains much the same as it does every Xmas.
Make sure you have starters on your bench.

      155 points so far.

Have therefore pressed the infamous WC button.

Now I can get rid of both KDB and Kane, along with Kolasinac, without hits. Spreading the cash on other players would cost too much if no WC.

In addition, I was not sure of Elliot's starting place (as NUFC was rumoured to purchase another goalie), I wanted another fifht mid for the not-an-AMC-anymore-Carroll, I was not sold on JayRod as a winger, and I was unhappy with the CS potential of Mee and Simpson.

Some might find this premature and rash. Most, I think, would support my choice.

And to those who call names and say wildcarders are "casuals" or in any other way inferior, let's just see in May who's on top 😉 Good luck to all, wildcarders and hitters alike!

''Or is it how Swansea's attack will line up regarding cheap enablers?''

Absolutely no idea how Swansea will settle down ...
      - have to wait to see if Tom Carroll gets a start from now on but with Clusac and Sanchez probably nailed, he has a huge fight with Mesa, Britton, Ki, Fer, Routledge, Narsingh etc ....
      - two from Bony, Tammy and Ayew (when Bony fit)? not sure I can see Bony and Tammy playing together
      - Swans may buy a right back too and then Naughton is under pressure

WC GW7 is where the clever money will be ...

What's with the wildcard police this season!! So many folk must have a crystal ball with their assurances that wildcarding now is a mistake. People producing lists showing why it's not the time! Yawn. Let every manager play their own game I say.

Think I may be getting the hang of this now Jonty mate!

Certain big hitters are outstanding issues - it aren't they always? Assisted by Form n fixtures.

One things for sure if Alexis goes to City he no longer becomes an issue cos like Aguero, Jesus, KbeB this year and those plus Silva last year; Pepe's tinkering, rotation and lack of knowledge of his team and formation will nullify them to random highlights not worth pursuing outside of very obvious exceptions.

Interesting to look back on my pre wildcard questions last week to resolve that I posted:

will kola the animal get let loose as lwb(2nd striker)?

Will alonso keep playing as a winger really without competition?

is there a nailed spurs full back for under 6m at the end of transfer window?

will Holgate or Martina nail a rwb position for everton for their gw6+ run

who will emerge as lowest rotation risk for pool attackers after champions league kicks in and coutinho in the mix?

will Sanchez with Lacazette increase or decrease fantasy output? (or should that now be jesus/aguero!)

are any of richarlison / Jese / Eric maxim the real deal for oop cheap mid?

will Everton start showing any more attacking more and will sigurdsson be on all set pieces?

will west ham get back their swagger of 2015/16 and who will be their main man (chico/antonio/lanzini) if so? (doesn't look so now)

Can morata make Chelsea number 9 shirt his own and click with hazard? (1 week on looks good for morata)

Spurs fan here. We'll be playing 3 at the back. No way is Levy going to fork out £42M for a bench player. We've also bought Juan Foyth which would be pointless if we weren't going to play with a back 3. Also Sanchez does not play RB.

I wildcarded and dropped Kane after falling quite far down my leagues.
        Attacking changes were
        Kane to Firmino
        Silva to Alli
        Tadic to Eriksen
        Ritchie to Mkitharyan.
Leaving in Mane, Lukaku and Chicharito. Losing Kane seems to have strengthened me massively throughout. Although I need to cover kanes points somehow. Just thought the spurs pair in the middle are more than capable of scoring similar points to Kane and are captain choices in their own right as well. If Kane scores it's normally one of them who have assisted. I've seen talk of doubling up on pogba and Mkitharyan to cover Lukaku. Thought this way could be better however.

Fair enough! I like the strong mids.. I'm leaning towards not going with alonso

got me 2 goals which was great but not a fan of the CHE fixtures plus I think Salah will provide consistent points

What are people's thoughts on Tom Carroll and Mbemba as 5th mid/def on WC?

Is Carroll's place at risk now they've signed Sanches/Clucas? Maybe RLC or Chalobah will be better in the long run?

Is Mbemba likely to keep his place for a while or is Wimmer at 4.4 a better shout?

Chalobah better in the long run imo.

I like Chalobah, looks good for long term and looks involved in their attack

Mbemba probably wont start for long

How do you guys see Man City threats if Sanchez signs for the skyblues?

Sanchez would look like the stand-out FPL option probably at the exepense of Jesus who would play on the right side.

But wouldn't this bring Aguero back into the mix? If Sanchez plays for City, they will probably go with Sanchez on the left side, Jesus on the right and Aguero as a sole striker? Or maybe Jesus and Leroy sane will share the right side and Jesus might rotate upfront with Aguero when Sané plays?

Gametime issues and too many scorers/assisters means I'm skipping them for first half of the season

I think Pep favours his own signings, and first team will increasingly reflect it.

Their best mid / fwd imo would be:

        Gundagon-- Fernandinho
        KDB------Silva-----Sanchez
        -----------Jesus

but it wont be that coz he likes KDB deep. In any case the answer is rotation aplenty, far too many good players.

        Sanchez Jesus Sterling
        KDB Fernandinho D.Silva
        Mendez Otti Komp Walker
        Keeper

This will be their line up if they they Sanchez
If they don't then they will keep rotating Sane, Sterling, B.Silva as the wide front men.
