Frisking The Fixtures – Gameweek 4 – The Weak

After scanning for the teams with the strongest schedules over the next six Gameweeks, it’s now time to focus on those who are braced for tougher times.

Our trio of headline selections face just two home clashes over the next six Gameweeks, and play in front of their own fans in only three of the upcoming eight, urging extreme caution if considering players from these sides.

We’ll assess each team’s prospects in terms of goals and clean sheets and also pinpoint the stage at which their schedule improves.

Crystal Palace

(bur SOT mci mun CHE new)
The Prospects – Goals
The Eagles have yet to score, although they have managed a reasonable 34 goal attempts.

A weekend trip to Turf Moor is not particularly kind, given Burnley’s impressive home form last term and their current confidence levels.

And Palace also face three of the four teams who have allowed the fewest number of close-range efforts over the opening three Gameweeks in the shape of Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle United.

In terms of upcoming visitors, Chelsea have yet to concede a big chance and Southampton have two clean sheets from three matches.

The Prospects – Clean Sheets
Visits to the Etihad and Old Trafford look very tough, with United the leading scorers so far with 10 goals.

Champions Chelsea are also gaining momentum and have to be fancied to register at Selhurst Park.

The other three matches at least offer some hope of respite, with Burnley, Southampton and Newcastle inconsistent in attack.

That being said, based on current form, defensive returns in those fixtures may also be scarce.

The Turning Point
Things don’t get much easier for Frank de Boer’s men until Gameweek 13, when they avoid all of the big guns over a seven-match stretch.
Verdict
It’s difficult to find any positives regarding Palace assets, with few viable options for our squads.

Much will depend on how quickly Mamadou Sakho can settle back in upon his return to full fitness, while the prospects at the other end of the pitch look reliant on Wilfried Zaha returning to contention following a knee injury. At 4.5, though, Ruben Loftus-Cheek – who started the first two Gameweeks until sustaining a groin problem – may yet prove a strong budget pick if he recovers quickly.

Watford

(sot MCI swa wba ARS che)
The Prospects – Goals
Given Marco Silva’s staggering historical home record, it’s a blow that the Hornets only have two Vicarage Road encounters during this spell – and they happen to be against Man City and Arsenal.

Both of their defences can be vulnerable at times, though, with the Gunners ranked joint-second for big chances conceded with eight.

Upcoming hosts Southampton, Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion have all kept two clean sheets apiece, while Chelsea at Stamford Bridge also represents another difficult match-up.

But Silva’s side have impressed as an attacking unit so far, with the 2-0 win at Bournemouth offering encouragement for the forthcoming away trips.
The Prospects – Clean Sheets
While they’ve kept two clean sheets, Watford have allowed 27 penalty area attempts – a real concern ahead of this tougher run.

The Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea match-ups certainly look unlikely to yield defensive returns, although the remaining three fixtures aren’t so daunting.

Southampton and Swansea have both had their struggles in front of goal, while West Brom have only created two big chances and often toil to create opportunities from open play.

The Turning Point
The Hornets don’t really face a concerted run of kind fixtures until Gameweek 17, with further testing matches against Everton, Man United and Spurs before then.
Verdict
Recent investors in Richarlison will have to hope the Brazilian can defy the stiffening schedule, but with no Watford players boasting an ownership of 5% or more in FPL, Hornets assets should generally remain off the radar.

Bournemouth

(ars BHA eve LEI tot stk)
The Prospects – Goals
It has been a poor start for the Cherries, who have scored just a single goal in the first three Gameweeks and slipped to three defeats.

The four away trips all look tough, although Saturday’s clash against Arsenal may potentially be a decent match-up given the current malaise at the Emirates.

Much will depend on them taking advantage of favourable home meetings with Brighton & Hove Albion and Leicester City.

Only three teams have allowed more penalty area shots than Leicester, while the Seagulls are still finding their feet in the top flight.

The Prospects – Clean Sheets
Everton, Brighton and Leicester all sit in the bottom five for shots inside the penalty area, suggesting that Eddie Howe’s side may be able to produce some defensive returns in those matches.

A trip to Stoke City also appears reasonable – the Potters have only created one big chance so far.

But Spurs and Arsenal are both in the top four for total shots and should prove extremely difficult to repel.

The Cherries also sit top for the most shots conceded inside the box, which suggests that clean sheets may remain a scarcity.

The Turning Point
Gameweek 11 signals the start of a favourable six-match run in which Bournemouth avoid all of last season’s top seven.

Verdict
While Charlie Daniels got on the scoresheet in Gameweek 3, the concerns at the back mean he is likely to be testing the patience of his 13.9% FPL ownership. In general, Cherries assets offer little appeal due to their lack of form and the tricky forthcoming schedule.

Also be wary of…

Stoke City
On the plus side, the Potters face four of their next six at home.

However, Man United and Chelsea are the next two visitors to the bet365 Stadium, while Mark Hughes’ men also pay a trip to Man City.

Southampton and Bournemouth provide the other opposition at home, while a visit to Newcastle does somewhat balance out those three unfavourable match-ups.

Stoke’s testing start to the season means that their players are all generally owned by very few managers – although Jese Rodriguez is now in 9.3% of squads – and may struggle to deliver in the short-term.

Liverpool
Just two of the Reds’ next six (mci BUR lei new MUN tot) are at home, although the three-goal performance at Watford in Gameweek 1 suggests that may not be a huge problem, in terms of their attacking prospects at least.

It’s at the back where the outlook isn’t so bright, with the three goals conceded against the Hornets a worry for the upcoming away matches.

Burnley’s away performances so far, and the goal scoring exploits of Man United, are also a concern for the two home encounters, although the Reds have recorded clean sheets in both of their fixtures at Anfield. Indeed, they have registered a shutout in seven of their last nine league matches.

Rotation is another worry, in the full-back positions in particular, but the potential of their attackers to produce big hauls means that isn’t such a concern for Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino. But the potential return of Philipp Coutinho does unsettle matters to introduce a new variable.

Huddersfield Town
The Terriers’ kind start to the season will shortly come to an end, with a daunting spell between Gameweeks 7 and 17 in which David Wagner’s side face all of last season’s top seven.

While members of Huddersfield’s backline can be easily benched due to their budget price tags, it’s likely that we’ll be looking to get rid over this period.

Those who invested in Steve Mounie following his 12-point haul in Gameweek 1 will be keen to ship out the Benin international, with other budget forwards set to come to the fore.

Aaron Mooy’s set-piece duties mean he may be able to keep ticking over, though.

But in the short-term, matches against West Ham and, to a lesser extent, Leicester could bring in more points.

Manchester United
Saturday’s trip to Stoke could be the toughest test yet, while worse is to come.

The fixture list stiffens just as the UEFA Champions League group stage gets underway, with the schedule between Gameweeks 5 and 11 looking tough – Jose Mourinho’s men face Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea.

Many FPL managers who have tripled up on Man United assets may have second thoughts very shortly, then, with goals and clean sheets potentially more difficult to come by, alongside a more active rotation policy.

But such is the form of Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan – along with the defensive value offered by Phil Jones (5.1) – it may take a United defeat before owners begin to consider exit plans.

Is there any data existing concerning Lukaku's record VS stoke?

Not as a Man United player. What he did with Everton v them doesn't matter imo.

When there's not current data available of course it matters... Stoke are the same team and he's the same player. Their and his playing style only differs a little from the last meeting and the old data is absolutely better than a wild guess.

Is anyone expecting Palace to get anything at Turf Moor? Im in a little bit of a pickle as i still have PVA lurking around my defence.

Iv'e been awfully stubborn and kept him in for his so called "kind fixtures" but he really hasn't done much at all, 3pts in fact. He's out my team next week, is it worth giving him one final chance, or is it worth bringing in Tom carrol for Newcastle home? I cant help but think PVA has a decent attacking threat!

  14. FPL Transfer Market - Points v Pounds

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    FPL transfer market

The FPL transfer market is one of the most divisive aspects to the game.

Some love the price rises and falls and enjoy playing the market - to make profit and boost team value to invest in more heavy hitters as the season goes on.

Some hate it though and feel forced to making moves based on value - not points potential.

This season though something has perhaps changed.

With 4m initial players - around 0.5m more than at the start of last year - it looks like rises and falls are being better managed, with many noticing far less changes. After all among this vast group at least half will leave by Christmas and another 1m will ebb away by May - can we really base our transfers on the view of this soon to be absent mass?

Do you think this season will see a reversal of the clamour for value and see more considered, later in the week transfers based on whether a player will actually do well?

Or is it business as usual and we will just have to accept we are playing within a turbulent and often hard to fathom market that does things like raise Salah's price one week, drop it another, then look to raise it again after he scores?

Sounds like you are a points not pounds person. Points first and then hope they rise in value - rather than going after those rising in price first and hope they get the points.

Definitely, high team value should be the result of good transfers at the correct times. If the player does well the majority will catch up and get the rises

      Business as usual.

There will always be casuals who chase the previous week's points aggressively, that causes price rises. So they're not going to change the way the play this season and have more considered transfers.

Oh wait, if you're asking if my approach would be influenced by that, no.

I think newer participants would be more likely to spend points frivolously on transfers especially early on.

I can only imagine there has been a change to the algorithm for price rises which means they won't rise as fast.

    6. The Rumour Mill
      • 7 Years

I've shifted strategy yes, not chasing value at all so far. Which I think actually suits my style of play better, I'm normally a lot stronger in the second half of the season when I'm less concerned with value. There is still money to be made though - Hegazi owners are sitting pretty right now.

Are you suggesting Salah's rises and falls have been particularly manipulated quite heavy handedly this season? Do the NTI's not justify his price changes?

Not at all re manipulation - more he has been the subject of intense and different transfer activity week to week. I used that more as an example of how the transfer market involves many people - and I'll try and phrase this carefully - who don't really know what they are doing. 😉

Ah I see, misunderstood you there! Haha! Yeah if you get in a Liverpool player you have to accept the rotation along with the 11 point hauls. I think we learned last season that hopping on and off them doesn't really work and just wastes you a load of transfers and hits along the way!

    7. MTPockets

It is what it is. I'd prefer an algorithm adjusted to less bandwagonny, but probably end up offset by fplshow, twitter etc anyway. Hard to gauge over an international break with wildcards.

It's nice when you jumped on the right bandwagons (Lallana, Costa, Lukaku, Alli) and gain that valuable profit; which means come the end of the season, you have potentially an extra 1.5 to upgrade your team heading into a double gameweek.

The big issue is you are permanently tearing your hair out worried everyone will drop. It's been quite underwhelming this season but maybe we need to adjust and will like it in the long run, as we can sit on our transfers for a week instead of making it on a Saturday night to miss price rises.

I have to admit it made it a lot harder not knowing about sites like fplstats as you had to show more impulse/bottle.

It could have the effect that managing your TV becomes increasingly important. If rises happen much slower it means that managers may need to be ever more attentive to risers and fallers as it may not be enough to just sit with popular, well performing players to build TV for the second half of the season.

Even those that traditionally ignore TV may find themselves struggling because they won't get as many rises 'for free' as previous seasons. It could come down to that maintaining TV will be a true investment this year, and and this point I don't dare to say if it is going to be worthwhile or not.

very much points orientated but do like to have my 4th/5th defenders and mids as cheaper options that have the ability to pick up price rises. e.g. don't care what happens with Salah, lukaku etc prices atm as returning points.
will keep an eye on trends for 3rd/4th mid e.g. Brady atm as may offer some points and if he does could easily have a little bump in value to capitalize on. Everyone is chasing that 3rd/4th mid all the time which makes them more likely to add a little value.

Whilst Mark's WC is questionable ultimately i think he has used the price rises to his advantage to put together a first 11 that is very strong.

His team is similar to mine except he now has mhki and I can't afford him and have to make do with Redmond.

Foster, Cedric, Naughton, Jones have produced 9 clean sheets out of a possible 12.

I'd say thats a very good return.

It's not about past returns, it's about future.

Aside from Jones, the other three are all a wait and see. And there's a reason they're so cheaply priced.

Also, you left out his 5th defender. Why?

Southampton, Swansea have good fixtures. We now exactly what we get from a West Brom team.

My original post spoke about his XI not his subs hence I didn't mention his 4th and 5th defender. £4.5 is the amount you want to spend on those benched defenders who can occasionally come in and do a job.

West Brom at this stage last season had exactly the same results. 2 clean sheets out of 3. Then, they went on to get only 4 more for the entire season. We know nothing.

Southampton are a safer bet, sure. I have triple Southampton defence, which has delivered excellent value for money for me, but I still wouldn't go as far as calling them 'strong' this early.

Swansea are simply a lottery at this point. Far from calling them strong this early. Their defending stats are worse than West Ham's. They conceded plenty of shots against Southampton in GW1 (I think over 15) and were lucky not to concede. Then, they conceded 4 against United. If Naughton hadn't got that assist last week, nobody would be bringing him in. Fixtures alone don't get you clean sheets.

I struggle to see better defensive options. Davies is the one I am considering for GW5 but is more expensive and may not be rotation proof once Rose returns.

You say you can't call Southampton 'strong' but then who is strong? Rhetorical question, we are only 3 games in, and can only go off of the information we have.

Lot of uncertainty in defenders at this stage this season.

Swansea have 6 CS in the last 12. They only conceded 11 goals in those 12 matches, 7 out of those against Manchester United and Tottenham. 6 out of those were again in the last 10 minutes of those matches.

They got their last 5 CS in the last 8 matches.

Swansea are very good defensively under Clement whether you acknowledge it or not.

So be it. If you have those stats and are convinced by them, then by all means, go for a Swansea defender.

I'm just going by this season's stats, nothing before this season. And they're worse than West Ham's. I could've done Stones ➡ Naughton this week, but I'm happy to wait another week and see how they do.

                      To each his own.

Stones > Naughton is a sideways move IMO and I agree with the rationale to save the transfer.

I've had Naughton since GW1 so an element of luck in his 12 point return I got last GW.

I keep wanting to save a transfer but keep seeing better options. Maybe next week. 🙂

Mark's team value has only risen form 100.5 to 100.7 so far this GW, which is a very small gain.

I wouldn't be surprised if his wildcard squad looks rather different by the end of the GW from the one shown on ScoutCast.

The small increase in team value and the limited number of improvements in the ScoutCast version certainly do not appear to me to be enough to justify his early wildcard.
There may be a greater number of changes that need to be made in a few weeks time.

The market has been slow to react to productivity. This maybe down to meddling by the 'market-makers' or a more patient approach by players. This could be a period where events are moving faster than the market can digest and that a massive revaluation is coming.

      • Darth_Krid
        • 6 Years

In the previous two seasons I agressively played the transfer market and took numerous hits in the first half of the season to build transfer value. I ended up with two excellent finishes because I had £107-108m transfer value for my second wildcard and so surged away from my rivals in April and May.

However, seeing how slow it is this year, I've decided to play the game a bit differently and take the patient approach, limiting hits to a minimum. For example, I've already lost £0.1 in Groß this week whereas last season I'd have swapped him to Mooy or Brady before the international fixtures were even played to save that 0.1.

Last season I wasted hits by making transfers too early, only for them to be injured in training and having to ship them out again (Austin, anyone?), so I'm going for a more level-headed approach. I think the slower transfer market has helped with this, as if players were rising like there was no tomorrow, I know I'd be too tempted to jump on the value-chasing train.

I don't think the market is volatile at all, I'd call him stagnant.

The Salah drop was explainable in that he did not start.

Other than that real anomaly nothing is happening price wise.

There were plenty of the opinion that the bottom would fall out of Kane's price and that didn't happen.

There could now be more to be gained in say a GW8 wildcard not by attempting to gain team value but by that stage more players may have dropped in price who could still be viable fantasy options. Perhaps that's where the value will be gained this season.

        checked last season's score.
        WC'd international break last year.
Value only went from 100.5 to 100.8 but immediate points return was enough to jump me from 1.2m to 400k.
Squad value only started significant moves around 2nd international break and slowly increased to 105.6m (sales value 104.6m) when i had 2nd wc pre-DDG.

Often I think that I have to chase price rises in order to afford the players I want - especially early in the season when every 0.1m rise can price you out of a player completely.

But this time round, a bit of patience, plus seeking out the low priced differentials, means I'm less worried about catching the rises with early transfers and more likely to wait and see who emerges next.

There does seem to be an insistence here that 4.5 is the max you should spend. There are always times in a season where I will opt for a premium GK depending on fixtures. I've upgraded to 5.0 now as my Hart punt flopped.

Last season I went cheap and rotated between Randolph and Grant, which worked well at times. But at the end of the season I went for Cech and De Gea in the DGW and smashed the points.

Arsenal have the best fixtures over the next five, on paper. Reality could be a different thing, however. Is it worth getting a premium gunners mid considering I have no Lacazette?

        Martial + Jesus > Ozil/Sanchez/Ramsey + Vokes

        Thoughts appreciated

A simple Martial to Ramsey would suffice (and that would be risky too)

          could pay off though

Yeah, thought about that, but if I can get Ramsey then surely Sanchez or Ozil would be better? Only really concerned about Arsenal mentality at the moment, fans are not confident about a big performance which is concerning

the players always inspire the fans at Arsenal. You can monitor for two games and then reassess or bite the bullet

Willian to Brady for a hit? Sounds crazy but Willian is getting less game time with the return of Hazard. Brady, we suspect, is going to be a very good FPL prospect. The best time to get him his now before CPL game?

Not for a hit but I like the move. Hazard was meant to be sharp on the ball but lacking match fitness off it.

I have Willian and I don't think he'll start after his 180 minutes with Brazil. I reckon he will start Hazard and get his fitness up, but don't really want to take another hit.

Yes unfortunately. I will leave him in and hope as I don't want to WC yet, although very tempted!

Late to WC now i think. Some people play down the importance of team value but we might as make use of it to capitalise on price rises.

          Willian22, Brazil

Willian is running short on chances to take the right wing spot. Eden Hazard is not match fit yet, but will start getting the nod before September ends. So Willian has a handful of chances to convert his national team form onto the club. His last match was excellent, but it is not enough. A good game against Leicester will see him starting against the likes of Manchester United instead of just the Nottingham Forest’s of the world.

Currently on a WC and I'm wondering if I should keep Kane out of the team this GW (but keep funds for him) in case he blanks/underperformance against EVE and drops another 0.1 due to casuals transferring him out (not taking account of upcoming fixtures).

This way I can buy him back at 12.3 and free up .2 funds?
The only issue is having to commit a FT next week for him and if anything happens to rest of the team it will cause problems.

Im really tempted to play someone like Abraham for this week then get Kane.

Is this worth the risk? or should I just get him in now and not worry about building on my already decent team value?

I'm playing without him but left 0.9 to bring him back next week. I think I'm going to play Lukaku or Kane depending on fixtures and form. This week Lukaku next Kane...and for next 5-6 I'll stay with Kane unless he won't find the net again.

Probably keep out, but anwers inc mine will be function of Kane ownership/not.

Given Kane's record & price, currently owning/not is taking a fundamental position. Therefore not sure you can get much objectivity in responses.

Ah ok I see. Im really asking the ppl who have or are looking to get Kane in. Im just trying to make the most out of my WC and that's maybe waiting on Kane and hoping for another blank. Need to think on it a bit more.

I'm in same wc position. I rate Kane but think can wait a week given relative fixtures/ownership & potential for another drop. I may still crumble before the deadline though.

Anyone else here with Willian and worried about him staring after playing 2 games with Brazil and Hazard's return, or could we get another week out of him without taking a hit?

Better options I imagine but could very well score against a leaky city backline, plus Liverpool generally do well in these kind of games
