Scout Notes

European Scout Notes – Wednesday

Harry Kane blows hot at Wembley, Manchester City hit four at Feyenoord, and the goals continue to follow Liverpool, but they have to settle for a draw with Sevilla.

Here are the notes from a stirring night of Champions League action.

Spurs look right at home

A Harry Kane double and an opening goal from Son Heung-min earned Spurs a thrilling 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund that should, finally, curtail the tiresome talk of a ‘Wembley hoodoo’.

It should also spark a huge wave of interest in Kane ahead of the visit of Swansea City for Saturday’s late kick-off.

So far, the majority of the Fantasy Premier League money has been spent on team-mates Ben Davies and Christian Eriksen, making them Gameweek 5’s top two transfers-in.

But Kane’s form is surely now irresistible.

He’s now scored twice as many goals (four) in five days than Swansea have managed all season – great news for those backing Spurs’ assets at both ends of the pitch.

As a result, the transfer take-up of Kane seems to be gathering momentum, with more than 106,000 managers finding the 12.4 required to secure his services.

For now, rotation is not an issue for such a key player at Spurs, but Mauricio Pochettino could break a few hearts elsewhere.

The form of Son, who has started just one league match this season, caught the eye last night.

For those wishing to read into a manager’s substitutions, both Kane and Son were taken off by Pochettino. That could suggest that the latter will figure in Saturday’s clash.

With Dele Alli surely assured of a start against Swansea as he serves a three-match European ban, the Spurs boss may conceivably manage the minutes of the 25.4%-owned Eriksen. Certainly, while we don’t think his start is under threat, a withdrawal around the 70-minute mark – like he did in the Gameweek 4 clash with Everton – could be on the cards.

The full debut of Serge Aurier, playing at right wing-back, also puts pressure on Kieran Trippier, who has started the last three league matches. He will be expected to retain his start for the Swans’ visit but will clearly be under threat from then on.

Pochettino was certainly pleased with Aurier’s showing.

“He was fantastic. I’m very happy with his performance, he showed real quality.”

But the 8.1% of managers who own Jan Vertonghen should have few worries about their man’s forthcoming domestic involvement – the Belgian was sent off for two yellow card offences last night, meaning he’ll miss Spurs’ September 26 trip to Apoel Nicosia.

That match is bookended by Premier League fixtures at West Ham and Huddersfield Town.

A changing of the Guardiola?

Man City saw off Feyenoord 4-0 with almost embarrassing ease – and with 10 of the team that started against Liverpool on Saturday.

John Stones joined the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at the top of the Champions League scoring charts with two of the goals in Holland, and while that will be a temporary issue, some of Pep Guardiola’s players are currently permanent fixtures in the side.

Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, who provided two assists last night, Rotterdam goalscorer Gabriel Jesus, Fernandinho and Nicolas Otamendi have started every match thus far this season.

Kyle Walker provided the assist for Sergio Aguero’s excellent second goal in Holland and has started all but the one match he was banned for following his dismissal against Everton, while the Argentinian striker has still managed 286 minutes despite dropping to the bench at Bournemouth.

The perceived wisdom is that Man City assets can’t be trusted to produce for their premium prices because of Pep’s lust for tinkering.

As a result, only four of them are currently owned by 10% or more of FPL managers, whereas Man United, Spurs and Chelsea all have six players in that category.

But there seems to be a core group of players for whom pitch-time is perhaps less of an issue than we might have bargained for.

Rotation, for the top sides, is a matter of course – particularly when the triple whammy of domestic duties, a busy European programme and international call-ups is in play during the early months of the season.

Based on the evidence so far, Man City players are no more, or less, susceptible to this as stars from any other major team.

And Guardiola’s men are increasingly in the richest of form. Unbeaten in five straight matches in all competitions, they’ve dropped points in only one fixture (when reduced to ten men), kept three clean sheets and scored nine goals, without reply, in the last five days alone.

Their next six fixtures include a Gameweek 7 trip to Chelsea. Other than that, it’s wat CRY STO BUR wba – the sort of run likely to increase momentum, not stall it.

Guardiola has already shown a capacity for compromise this campaign, starting both Jesus and Aguero in four of the five matches to date.

The pair have responded with 23 and 21 points respectively, and both were on the scoresheet again in Holland last night.

Not entirely merry across the Mersey

There seem to be two things we can rely on when watching Liverpool so far – Jurgen Klopp will go ballistic on the sidelines every now and then and there will be goals.

Aside from the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, every other match has produced at least four, with the Reds’ 2-2 draw against Sevilla last night another case in point.

Whether the three-match domestic ban for Sadio Mane changes all that remains to be seen.

He played the majority of the match against the Spaniards and the two obvious contenders for his Premier League place, Philippe Coutinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, were given little time to make their respective cases as a result.

Coutinho’s 15-minute cameo merely served to show how rusty spending the summer attempting to move to Barcelona can make you, while Oxlade-Chamberlain’s 89th minute introduction was good for the appearance bonus alone.

Goalscorers Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah again impressed, although the former blotted his copybook by missing a penalty that could put his spot-kick duties in jeopardy.

With skipper Jordan Henderson potentially in the mix to assume that role, it remains to be seen if Firmino surrenders responsibility following Wednesday’s failure. As the second most owned forward in FPL, it would come as a major blow to his Fantasy stock should that be the case.

In defence, Liverpool were the wrong side of generous once again.

Statistically strong but dreadfully prone to individual error, Dejan Lovren made a horrible mess of a regulation clearance to gift Sevilla the lead. Meanwhile, Joe Gomez’s late dismissal for a second yellow card could have a major impact on the Fantasy charms of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The two young right-backs have alternated starts in the league thus far, with Alexander-Arnold rested last night presumably in preparation for Saturday’s visit by Burnley.

His 4.5 price tag, 2.2% ownership and share of set-piece duties all make the defender an attractive, if risky, proposition for the Reds’ relatively kindly short-term schedule of BUR, lei, new.

But with Gomez now suspended for Liverpool’s second Champions League group match – a long and arduous trip to Spartak Moscow on September 26 – the chances of Alexander-Arnold starting the domestic matches either side of that European encounter now look decidedly slim.

Alberto Moreno, on the opposite flank, had a superb match going forward against Sevilla, capping it with an assist for Firmino’s leveler.

He, too, costs 4.5 and is minimally owned. But having started four of the Reds’ last five matches, he will also struggle to feature in all three of the Leicester/Spartak Moscow/Newcastle matches that precede October’s second international break.

Andrew Robertson could be another to get the nod against Burnley in Gameweek 5.

Is it worth taking a -4 hit this week to get Kane in for Morata? Have the money ITB to make the move.

Or do i wait it out an make the change next week for free? Already have Alli as spurs cover but i fear Kane could explode this weekend.

    Thoughts please?

A lot of people had a feeling that Kane would explode against Burnley, he didn't. Don't destroy what you currently have if you don't own him.

I see morata scoring one this weekend. Taking that into account alongside the -4, Kane would need to score a brace to just breakeven

I saved 2 million for Kane when playing my wildcard in GW3 with the intention of bringing him in for Swansea at home but it really would not surprise me to see him on the bench and llorente given some minutes. Anybody any thoughts on this ?

My front 3 is currently Morata/Lukaku/Firmino.

I had took Kane out for Morata over the first International break as Kane was dropping and Morata was rising with the intention of keeping the money ITM to get Kane back ahead of GW at a lower price.

However i have had to already use my FT sorting out another issue so am wondering do i still make the Morata > Kane move i had planned for -4? Alternatively I could switch Lukaku for Kane also.

So my question is will Kane outscore Morata or Lukaku by enough this week t justify a -4 hit?

Same front line as me. I'm sticking as I think Morata is likely to score against a struggling tired after Europa Arsenal-
And perhaps twice. Kane could well start from bench and Spurs have yet to crack bus parking at Wembley.

I have the cash to move for Kane next week but I reckon I may wish to keep Morata and TXO Kaka for Kane or (with more surgery) Firminho for Kane as both are now facing team Lack without Pogba n Mane respectively and for Manu less easy fixtures.

        Hope it helps.

Looking at it too simply here. Assuming you would captain Lukaku the comparison should be:

      Lukaku x 2 + Morata x 1
      Vs
      Lukaku x 1 + Kane x 2

Guessing at goal each for Morata and Kaku and two for Kane:

      12 + 6 = 18
      6 + 20 - 4 = 22

You're 6 points better off in that scenario, (impossible to factor in bonus) but it's all guesswork!

I never really believed in it until I saw a social media post in which Kane himself referenced it. If he is aware of it (which he is) then it could certainly play on his mind - even his subconscious mind could play a part in giving him a lack of confidence which is not obvious to anyone, not even himself. When he hit the post against Newcastle I think he probably hesitated in some way, subconsciously or otherwise, and he didn't hit it as he normally would.

It's bullshit, but Kane is generally a slow starter, we have witnessed it for years now. He starts flying from the Jan period and ends the season on a high.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

        Is 2017/18’s theme emerging?

Every season is different and each campaign differing tactics are needed to prevail. This is usually based on the way players are priced and their form. The emergence of wingbacks has also helped our decisions and set formations.

Sometimes the theme is a nice easy one.

For example in Leicester’s title winning season, investing in the cheap as chips Mahrez and Vardy was the simple strategy for success. This left plenty of money to swap around heavy hitters. In fact that season team value was meaningless as there were so many cheap options.

Last season was different again. Good players cost money and the likes of Josh King were few and far between. This meant that team value was key and aggressive pursuit of money was vital – through early transfers. Also last season such early moves were not punished – players brought in post Match of the Day highlights stayed fit throughout their midweek games to do well again the next Gameweek.

Already this season we are seeing a difference. Early transfers are being punished- eg Pogba.

In addition the market is shunning cheap 4.5 defenders – which is seeing them available even cheaper.

Meanwhile, there is no viable 4.5 striker, making 3-5-2 unpopular.

Money is still needed for heavy hitters – but there is value this season, with Firmino offering good value, Mkhitaryan too as well as Ben Davies – the top scorer and priced at just 5.7.

There is another change this season – Lukaku and Kane are becoming, if not already are, the most popular combination up top. With them cemented in many teams can those who shun them keep up?

What do you think the key themes of this season are so far—and how will they affect your strategy?

With no starting 4.5 striker available is 3-5-2 dead in the water?

Is this the season of four at the back?

Is this the season where patience trumps aggression?

I think so too. I'm already this week moving funds into defence and attack in the search for value.

Players I'm looking at in future are all defenders or attackers - midfielders are not interesting me.

Keane, Kolasinac, Vardy, Morata, Jesus all players I want.

We all know EVE fixture is very attractive, but (1) $5.5 is expensive (2) Post-Lukaku makes EVE far less dangerous upfront, we could assume the opposing team would need fewer bodies at the back and pose more attacking threats to them (3) we have to discount their performance of those post-Europa matches.

I would doubt if Keane worth such price tag.

Basically you will want the under-valued Phil Jones, one or two among Bavies/Alonso/Kola/Mendy, a cheaper but more attacking return by Dawson/Daniels, then there are really no space for Keane, no matter how kind EVE fixture is

Exactly. By using mid-price/budget midfielders I can see myself just changing them every few weeks...

You could add Bavies, Mendy, Alonso and Lacazette to that list.

My strategy was always to go heavy in midfield, but the past two seasons with the emergence of the wing backs, my backline is all premium. Because the likes of Coutinho, Hazard and Sanchez haven't been available, I've gone heavy up top as well. I feel confident in my team but once the big hitters come back, and they show form, it will cause huge problems and perhaps the first WC of the season will be the most important for a long time. Sanchez though would have to do something remarkable to be considered due to his price tag.

the budget MIDs are too hit and miss to even consider 3-5-2.

Until 1-2 emerge (will it be C-M, Gross, Ritchie, Mooy, Ince, Doucoure, and on and on and on), 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 will remaining the formations of choice.

Mark might already be onto it here. Not a lot of value below 8m for mids so there is logic in picking two cheap options and playing 4 at the back especially with the wing back theme.

The strategy is right the execution is wrong. There is value in and around the 5-6m range...but you can't tap into that if you are stuck with two 4.5 mids. As was said on the scoutcast - there's nowhere to run from them.

Also if you go the two 4.5 mid route you need to have a stronger defender to field 4 at the back...you would need to have Davies or Alonso or similar.

So yes there is logic in going lighter in midfield - but not to that extent. And the key is definitely leave money to tap into those wingbacks.

Yes agree I have Eriksen and Mikhi in midfield with the rest made up of 4.5-5's, 2 big hitters in defence and 3 big strikers. For me having Kolasinac and Alonso is almost like having two big midfielders

similar for me, i think there is value in a handful of 4.5 mids and defenders that tick away and will get you 100+ points each over the season

For now, defence and attack yes. But Hazard, Sanchez and Coutinho will all undoubtedly need to be thought about at some point to play alongside our Mkhis and Eriksens.

Good approach for the time being, but make sure we don't end up too stubborn about it

Finding a way to accommodate Kane and Lukaku with Morata/Jesus will be necessary sooner or later. So a heavy front 3 i feel will be the way to go once teams are settled in!

Ben Davies - top scorer 5.7
Charlie Daniels - top ten defender last two seasons - 4.9
            Gary Cahill - 6.3 - 0.8 cheaper than Alonso
Lots of 4.5 or so too...the burnley back line, Stoke's wimmer an option at 4.4. And in goal there's Elliot - a 4.0 gift from the gods.

Common theme is of now is lack of a viable consistent third striker below 8.0m

Its either get Firmino or try your luck with a mid priced striker which can be frustrating at times

Just discussing that on twitter with Triggerlips - Vardy and Firmino are by miles the best third strikers - which means we have to find value in midfield.

West Ham's many mids, Ritchie, Choupo Motting - all looking necessary to afford that frontline and tap into the excellent value in defence in the 5-6.5 price range.

I think two premuiums and two up to 6.0 is good....or two cheaper mids as long as you have at least one strong defender like say Davies/Alonso/Cahill.

Patience will Trump aggression this year. Don't get caught on the big striker merry go round.

Lukaku, Kane, Morata, Jesus, Lacazette will all score well.

Kane is 20% more expensive than Jesus and Morata. Will Kane score 20% more points (roughly 45pts before captaincy) than them to justify his value? I don't think so. Then if you factor in the 2m in the rest of your team I would suggest there is no way!

It is the Captain's pick that swings it - you will not captain your 2m spread over the mids - you will captain Kane, Lukaku or Morata for example ... then you get your 2.0m premium back in buckets and you don't lose ground when these three are captained by others

I've gone without Lukaku and Kane (gave him the boot after GW1) so far, played 3-5-2 and it has worked really well for me. A front 7 of Morata, Firmino, Pogba, Mkhitariyan, De Bruyne, Alli and Salah has done the trick. But if the well owned big boys start firing braces and hattricks every match, I'm willing to bring them in and compromise on my midfield.

That looks a good decision. Let's not forget Kane flopped for Aug. There will be a time to embrace the so called big hitters but you've already got points in the bag by then and increased team value enables selective acquisition

433 is the formation of choice for me moving forward.

Whilst Mark was berated on the scout cast for a midfield including Carroll and Loftus Cheek, i have the same two.

It goes to show that there is little value to be found in midfield, at least for now.

I think this is to do with the fact that the wing back system is popular amongst many teams.

It means central midfielders are sitting more in midfield while the wing backs bomb forward.

See above - the key to a successful 4.5 pairing in midfield I think is to ensure you have a strong defence...its a great tactic if you have the likes of Davies or Alonso who behave like midfielders. Not so great it you have a cheap defence.

I've got two 4.5 mids that you were so keen to mock Mark for but can see his defence was weak, mine has Alonso, Davies, Jones and Cedric which (to me) makes the decision to have two 4.5 mids nothing to worry about.

I've seen one team who goes one further and has been on 532 all season and he's ranked 1k, not sure you can beat that and he's had two 4.5 mids all season.

I've gone with at least four at the back every week and completely written off the third striker position ... not bothered who's there so long as they don't drop. Not sure if I've just been lucky but it seems to have worked okay so far.

I'm wondering about love for a more expensive keeper. You normally see a fairly expensive defence with 4.0 and 4.5 keeper.

However to me, De Gea is very tempting. 136 points last season, consistency above or around 130 points for 5/6 seasons and only 5.5. Is there a defender that can match that?

Sure Jones is better due to being cheaper and possibility of a goal or two, but how long till he is replaced/rested? De gea is nailed on every game.

          Am I missing something?

          Some comparisions:
          Alderweild/Vert ~ 120pt 0.5 more
All Utd defence < 100pts and more
City defenders ~ 100pt same price (Walker 130pts 1m more)

It's about the fact that defenders can be rotated much more easily so you get more points overall by rotating two cheaper defenders.

              I see, fair enough.

So as long as you manage to get most of the rotation right you'll end up with more points for 1m less?

i.e Mee/Naughton + 5.5m Def + Elliot/Fab would end the season with more than Mee + Naughton + De Gea assuming rotation is done well?

I always get it wrong it's tempting to have a rock at the back and bring in Elliot when De Gea has a tough game.

Although I could drop De Gea for Fab and drop my 5th mid Gross for Felliani (for £) then upgrade one of my 4.5 to Azpil...

                • 9 Years

                Most have a £4.5m GK and a £4.0m GK (let's assume Elliott as he's playing) = £8.5m

With De Gea you could get, say 150 points (from £9.5m), but if you can get 135 points from 2 rotating keepers that gives the same value.

                (150 divided by 9.5m times £8.5m = 135 ish)

Then you use the £1m you have saved wisely on rest of your team (which will give you more than the 15 points loss you incurred by not having De Gea). However if you don't believe the extra £1m will get you additional points having De Gea is better.

Even if you have one playing keeper he can do just as well as De Gea because of save points and bonus.

Cheap keepers are likely to make more saves, and in the games that they do get a clean sheet have a good chance of bonus.

A similar rotation philosophy can be applied to defence.

This is why most people in years gone by most have employed a 343 formation.

I can't speak to the specifics of your squad (might be an idea to link your team on your profile like I have).

Basically look for value at all times except with regards to your 2/3 best players (because captaincy impacts value)

                Hope that helps.

Fab (unsure about going for Gomes/Foster) / Elliot

Azpil, Danilo (for 1 gwk - Keane after), Davies, Jones 4.0 Newcastle

Alli, Mkhi, Fellaini (while pogba injured), moting, doucoure

                  Kane(c) Firmino Jesus (morata soon)

Fab - From what i've seen stats wise Swansea may look better than they actually are. Even though their run is good may be better to utilise 0.4m/0.5m elsewhere.

                    Davies - Essential
Azpil - consider waiting till after City match to get Chelsea defence (For 0.6m more you could have Alonso who would be much better)
Danilo - Given that a transfer is equivalent to 4 points is it worth having a player for one week (consider getting Keane now and benching)
4m Newcastle - As long as he plays, great

Fellaini - I have no idea if he will start regularly even with Pogba injured. Maybe Herrara will? Also you don't want too much cash on the bench. (maybe utilise Carroll or Loftus cheek to help afford better defence or upgrade Doucoure)
Doucoure - Not sure about this guy but at the end of the day its not a huge investment

At present my team will look like this next week

                    Davies Kolasinac Jones (Naughton/Mee rotating)

                    Erikson Salah Choupo

                    Lukaku Kane Firmino

Bench - Naughton/Mee, Carroll, Loftus Cheek

Thanks for your help iceman, been great!
Azpil - I'm a little worried about price rises really, he hasn't gone up yet. Really stretching everything already. He ws 7pt behing Alonso last season, 0.6m and 5 this season (due to a mad Alonso brace). I'm hoping he'll be more value in the end.
Danilo - Very true - re thinking Keane transfer now considering how awful Everton have been. Also I reckon City should get CS, Everton won't. There is the potential 4 pts.

Felliani & Doucoure - I don't plan on using either often, mainly as backup and hopefully a little price rise if Felliani plays while Pogba is inj.

I am tempted by Salah instead in mkhi! Great looking team, good luck this weekend!

i'm looking at taking Lukaku to Kane to go alongside Jesus & Firmino.
Reason being I think Jesus can keep pace with Lukaku and if I have Kane he would be captain most weeks so Lukaku seems a bit expensive for a non-captainer. If he loses penalties even more so. again if Firmino loses penalties he may require a rethink.
I've had a blinding start (3k) but things looking shaky now with players like Hegazi & Stephens no longer looking guaranteed starters and I'm thinking the 1m difference between Lukaku & Jesus could be used on defence.
2nd problem is started with DDG but again there's another 1m there that can go in defence.
As far as budget mids go I think very much like last year it's a case of finding many options over the season rather than a 1 or 2 consistent long-term options being there.
Just got to try & survive until 2nd international break (with minimal hits) to use WC.

It's the season of struggling to choose the best attacking midfield option from each top side. They all have 2 great options, almost identical in price and potential scoring. With all these sides (except City) playing 1 up front, the strikers are easy. But the Mickey/Pogba - Alli/Eriksen - Salah/Mane - Debruyne/Silva - Aguero/Jesus choices are massive.

Picking the "right" one has so far been huge.

Mane is banned and Pogba is injured, setting those who understandably opted for them back 2 transfers.

Key theme for me is captain Kane or captain Lukaku?

It's boring a reminds me of the days when everyone including me used to captain Cristiano Ronaldo every week.

Think I'm going to ditch Lukaku as you can only have one captain and Kane wins it for me.

Spread the money elsewhere getting some differentials and climbing the ranks.

That's the plan anyway it's just when to ditch Lukaku.

Same here. I feel that, if it's going to be done, it needs to be done now with Kane having Swansea at home and being priced at 12.4.

Nevertheless, Kaku could really punish us for it vs Everton.

Specifically strategised WC last week to strengthen def making sure everyone is nailed. Not ready to go 5 at back but start with 4 this week. Alonso, Bavies, Zanko, Cedric.

Up front Kaka, Morata, Firminho with cash to upgrade to Kane next GW after observing rotation, Form and Liverpool/UTD post midfield losses.

Patience is definitely key this season since price risers are few and far between. I think a transfer policy of selling your weakest links to avoid price drops, rather than switching between the latest big hitter kneejerk is far more profitable since the 8-9.5m mids and 10-12.5m strikers seem likely to all score well over time. Holding Jesus and Kane through their 0.1 drops would seem to make sense. Whereas the JWP's and Frasers had to go, even if it means waiting a week on players such as Eriksen or Salah. The time to make a double rise is massively outweighed by avoiding drops and selling "weak links" that are falling are far less likely to backfire and improve your teams overall total.

Defence is also key, and even more so, wing backs. They seem the value area of this season to maximise team value. With the premium striker options of Kane/Lukaku/Jesus/Aguero/Morata/Lacazette i think there is a case for a big front 3 in a 5-2-3 formation, as extreme as it sounds. Two big mid spots should be doable from making a quick draft.

Just not bought at all on a big three, or even a big 2 up top. Why spend 11.5m on a player you'll rarely captain? Man Utd aren't in the same league as Tottenham attacking-wise. Jose hasn't turned into Guardiola overnight.

Last season the midfielders killed the attackers in value, it'll take me a while to shift from this. Currently on Erik, Dele & Salah - may well get a 4th in given cheaper defender options.

Well despite having scored 4 in 4 whilst missing a penalty and even mentioning other competitions, Lukaku is falling. That indicates to me that people are struggling to manage their teams without 3 big front men. Kane and Lukaku are nailed for 90 mins and were the top two scorers last season and a similar trend over the past few years. To me that cries out that a premium third striker spot is needed, flipping between whoever has the best fixtures from the top 4 challengers.

Why can't something like this work:

                Elliot 4.0
                Kolasinac, Davies, Jones, Cedric, Clark
Salah(9.0) , Mkhtaryan (8.0), 4.5m triple combo (Carroll can be first sub for a long while)
                Kane (12.4), Lukaku (11.5), Jesus (10.4)

There is actually 1m in the bank there if you wanted to squeeze in an Alli/Eriksen over Mkh and perhaps downgrade Kolasinac after the good fixtures or change a 5m to a 4.5m.

You may well be right, it's just history has taught me that you need to spread points over your team, not pull all eggs into one forward basket. For me there's not enough points coming from midfield there.

Last season, yes. But this season I just don't sense any optimism with Arsenal, I can't see Sanchez getting near that score this season and he is at a higher price with far more question marks over his head.

Alli played 6 or 7 games less than Kane I believe, although he is a brilliant option, however not close to Kane in terms of giving him the captaincy.

With the price changes less frequent, your last comment of Patience trumping aggression is the biggest theme for me this season.

Things change, and people emerge, so it's too soon to talk about formations emerging. Though I agree the lack of mid-priced midfield options (though the stats say Richarlison could be ok) means it's tough to go for 5 in mid, particularly compared to last year.

Think patience is key this season (well for every season I suppose). Wild carded last week and removed KDB, Kane & Kola from my team - got roasted for that!

Looking back, I could've saved the WC and fixed the team with a few FTs and hits here and there.

Also, think it's wise to wait until Friday/Saturday before making a transfer to avoid any disappointment (e.g those who did Mane => Pogba earlier this week).

          =)

If there is a "theme" emerging, its probably that its all about the premium strikers up front - Kane, Lukaku, Jesus, Aguero, Morata, Lacazette...but no quality cheap mids to enable having three of them - hence its a difficult season!

Pogba getting injured does not constitute a theme of early transfers getting punished - that's just happenstance

Can we go without Kane or Lukaku, there are players in top 10 or have neither
I think one and switching between these will do as give a good clear C in most weeks

I think players and squad need to be flexible like you say to move to change both player and formations will not be the same for season or so long this year, what if Haz , cout, sanchez , Alli all start firing in next few weeks?

a spine of premium WB, mid and attacker and build around that may be ........ is so many options and no set pattern its hard this year I think

          I like 4-3-3

4 attack minded defenders around 5-6m, with a quality asset like Trent TA as the 4.5 (will he bite?)
          2 power mids
A third 'punt' mid to switch around
          A Firmino 'plus' forward line

This avoids the issue of the elusive bargain midfielder. Shame its taken me a wildcard to realise this and now try and get back to something like my original line up (sigh). Played like a rookie so far...

With 5-2-3 it helps solve the midfield conundrum and I've gone with Alonso, Davies, Kolasinac, Cedric, and I've ousted Hegazi (cashed in on the £0.2m profit) and gone for Clark.
Yes I know he's not a wing back but with Kane, Lukaku and Firmino leading the line then something had to give somewhere. Been playing around with losing Lukaku and bringing in Jesus which allows Clark to become a £6m defender. Nothing takes my fancy in that bracket unless I want to do a Luiz and Alonso double up so leaving things as they are for now.
You previously told me that the way I'm set up, I need Kolasinac to keep delivering. Well just that happened last week can't see it happening this week to the same extent, but I think there's a certain mindset that people need to address. I've seen people talk about dropping Kola for the Chelsea game because of Chelsea's goal threat, or holding off getting him in this week because of the fixture. I'm playing him because of his attacking threat, and hoping if (sorry when) Chelsea do score he'll be able to get returns at the other end.
For me, yes indeed, this is the season to go heavy in defence and up front and if Newcastle can carry on keeping the odd CS here and there then the Elliot and Clark double up may start to pay off too...

Yeah I'm going with Elliot and Clark for at least the next two weeks, and when they have a fully fit defence I read somewhere he will move to RB. In the next 10 they only have Liverpool (GW7) and Man United (GW12) to really worry about and I think over that mini run of games I can easily see them keeping clean sheets here and there.

My WC couldn't have gone any better tbh. Brought in Davies, stayed away from Pogba and Mané and chose Mkhitaryan and Salah. Those that chose the former two have indeed been punished or have they just been unlucky?

Many of the top HoF managers made the Pogba or Mané transfer so if you did choose one of or both of them, you're in good company.

Maybe I just got beginners luck or got away with it because I'm a cheapskate lol

More I think about it there seems to be a case for 2-3 budget mids and heavy defenders. Really isn't a lot of value in mid priced mids. 5-2-3 isn't that far fetched if you are loading up on alonso, bavies, mendy, kola and other wing backs.

With so many very good comparable options at the same price points (5.5-6 mids, 10-10.5 strikers, 9-9.5 mids etc) luck is a huge factor this season. Possibly moreso than ever. Combined with the slow price changes it may be best to stick with your picks - don't chop and change.

Goal scoring wing backs are certainly key this year. Alonso is prime example of that. In the past Baines was the only option for this kind of player but now there are much more who are scoring more regularly. Utilizing good value midfielders around 8m mark will be crucial to allow the big hitters in a front 3. Potentially it could be the first time in a long time that 4-3-3 is useful.

For many a season i lived by the 3-4-3 formation, this was how I envisioned the best formation to maximise points and although this never got me close to winning it grinded out good ranks.

Last year due to the emergence of the power midfielders and lack of choice up front I divorced my beloved 3-4-3 and adopted the midfield maximising 3-5-2 formula, this produced my best season to date and my first 1k finish.

So far this year things seem to have shifted yet again with lots of choice in attack and a lack of quality in midfield. Maybe the return of hazard and sanchez will rectify this but instead of reverting back to 3-4-3 I went one step further and went 4-3-3.

For me the wing backs offer far too much value to ignore, therefore spend big at the front and back and scrimp in between

People complaining about the lack of midfield between 5.0 and 8.5m after campaigning for filling out the midfield with 7.0m midfielders pre-season due to the 'flexibility' it would offer. People feeling entitled to 'emerging' options, as if FPL could do something about it like altering player attributes. People blaming FPL towers for pricing instead of owning their problems and finding joy in finding solutions. People assuming that the same tactics will work every year, and even when they don't they should. Etc

          There's a stick up my ass 😉

Because price rises are so few and far between and because there don't seem to be many good cheap players, I'm really focussing on building team value more than before in the hope that I can get an extra big hitter later on.

It seems odd to think of strategies as differentials, but where in previous years you had to chase rises to keep up with the majority, this year hitting rises could be an advantage over the majority if it's harder and seems less productive initially.

          So I'm ignoring Jonty's #pointsnotpounds.

Some of the better value cheap mids so far have been Doucoure, Groß, Choupo-Moting, Mooy, Richarlison, Brunt, Kante, Jese, Cleverley, Cork. Not exactly a list that gives you confidence as all of them create doubts.

If you have Kane & Lukaku then your 3rd striker is either going to be dead weight or costly, which is squeezing the midfield budget. Kane himself is a problem, a lot of people just won't be able to leave him out of their team even though his output is more like a 6m striker.

Another issue is that there are no Mahrez, Sigurdsson like 7-8m priced options who are playing above their value at the moment. If there was it would be much easier just to choose between Kane/Lukaku as per your captaincy, beef up your 3rd striker and upgrade your 4th mid.

Until our squad value increases enough, which could be mid-season I think 4-3-3 & 3-4-3 are both viable.

        Trippier will start this weekend.

The question is does Aurier play vs Barnsley or does Poch play a kid?

If Aurier plays then Trippier should be nailed for West Ham.

        Aurier then plays Apoel.

        Trippier plays Hudds.

Then international break and I wildcard.

hi all, really confused on the next few moves..have 2Ft and 0.9m

        Elliot -- Forster
Valencia Bertrand Dawson -- Mee Mason
Ritchie Salah Mkhi Willian -- Carroll
        Kane Mounie Kaku

A: Willian >> xxx (upto 7.9m) and roll over other FT
B: Dawson + Willian + Mounie >> Wimmer + Chopu-M + Firmino (-4)...could always do the willian move now and do the remaining transfer next week when west brom and hudders have a tougher fixture
        C: Willian + Mounie >> Gross + Vardy

Something else? need to get rid of valencia too...no attacking prospect at that price

Elliot, Gamez v Choupo could give me a decent chance of ensuring some points via my enablers this week.

        Thoughts on this please.

        Elliot
        Cedric / Dawson / Jones
        Ritchie / Eriksen / Mkhi / Ince
        Firmino / Lukaku / Kane

        Foster / Carroll / Daniel / Mariappa

I have a FT and 0,7 in the bank. Was thinking of just keeping this team for this week and having 2 FT for next week.

Should do, Dummett the only other conventional left back and Clark played there before. With Mbemba injured, it's Clark and Lascelle in the CBs spot

probably, but he doesn't seem like a longer term answer. if you don't have him, certainly don't bring him in -- look elsewhere.

Lejune could come in Saturday to pair with Lascelles at CB, with Clark moving left.

Morning all. Had a mediocre start to the season and have boxed myself in with a premature wildcard and not enough ITB so my moves are limited in the light of Pogba's injury. Team as follows:

        Foster Heaton
        Jones Alonso Naughton TAA Mbemba
        Salah Pogba Brady Carroll Mooy
        Kane Firmino Lukaku

1.3m in the bank and 0.1 short of a straight swap from Pogba to Alli. Not convinced that Mkhi is a good move so considering a hit to find the extra 0.1 to get Alli. Looking at dumping Brady for Gross or Doucoure (I know, it's come to this...). Good plan or does anyone see any other good moves?

Just caught up with this weeks' scoutcast and got to say that I agree with Johnty's on Marks WC team.

The sacrifices that he has made to shoehorn Firmino in has severely weakened the rest of his team.

Two 4.5 mids rules out a whole host of 5.5-6.0 mids that could potentially explode - mahrez style. Also his defense is so cheap that he cant jump on this year's Alonso-esqe players e.g. Bavies.

On top of the inflexibility he has put himself in the position where he has to play one of RLC, TC, TAA or Naughton each week - yuk!

All this compromise just to get Firmino is madness! Especially when the rest of his key players are exactly the same as his pre wildcard team.

        Anyone else agree?

Mark has a good team.. Its just that he didnt need to wc. with a couple of hits he could have sorted his team out

I get what Mark was thinking. His idea is that many will own lukaku kane and firmino come gw6. So he wanted to get ahead of the curve and roll with that trio early to reap rewards

He had a good team prior to the WC. I know because it was almost the same as mine. Thats why i was so surprised when he used his WC. Instead i just took the drops and managed the issues at hand.

Im not sold on the Kane Kaku Firmino frontline as it severely restricts future movement.

          Yeah. Spot on.

Way too inflexible and no wildcard to correct it. Hits galore when Davies, Kolasinac, Alonso and Mendy keep firing.

It's incredible, but his most expensive defender is 5.0. Even to get a 5.5, he needs to take a hit.

His most expensive goalkeeper is 4.0. Same logic here. Damn.

Exactly - no flexibility in that team. So hard to make any move without changing one of his key players.
