Barring the unthinkable, Kevin Davies will be sitting on 54 points in the Fantasy Premier League this evening. His brace of goals and the smart assist for Martin Petrov’s late fourth in the win over Spurs will surely earn him the maximum Bonus Points. That would move the Bolton striker onto 14 Bonus Points overall – more than any other Forward in the game.

The underdogs and the unfashionable were always in with a chance of shining this weekend. With some of the FPL’s top individuals – Rafael Van der Vaart, Nani and Florent Malouda all possibly missing out, the opportunity was always there for the unsung heroes to step forward and save the Gameweek. Ji-Sung Park stepped out of Nani’s shadow and duly obliged over at Old Trafford, but in Fantasy terms, they don’t come more unsung than Kevin Davies.

As usual the Bolton striker was heavily involved throughout today’s game. His Bonus Point popularity may well be a mystery to some, but for those familiar with his influence and contribution to the cause, it’s no surprise. Our Members need only cast an eye over the Opta stat tables, paying particular attention to “Touches”, “Passes Made”, “Key Passes” and “Successful Passes in the Oppositions Half”, to get a view on how Davies compares to the rest of the league. He is without doubt one of the most influential strikers around. In the FPL, that will always make up for his lack of goals – particularly in a Bolton side bereft of stars.

Having earned 18 Bonus Points last season, with 12 the season before that, Davies is on his way to having his best ever season in that area. As for goals, spot-kick duties can only help the cause, as demonstrated today. With 4 goals to his name so far, and a couple of assists to back them up, there’s every reason to expect Davies to notch his best ever FPL points tally.

While Fabio Capello has taken notice, Fantasy Managers have chosen to pass. Priced at 6.3 and with Johan Elmander a cheaper and more fashionable option, Davies seems unlikely to pick up huge interest, even after today’s 16 point haul. Two away fixtures at Everton and Wolves may also put off investors. Bolton have not yet failed to score on their travels however, and once through that pair of away games, Bolton enjoy three home fixtures in four, with Newcastle, Blackpool and Blackburn all visiting the Reebok. Davies has every chance of getting himself on our Christmas wishlists.

Along with Elmander, Davies is this evening amongst the top six strikers in the FPL. Only the Drogba/Anelka fair better as a pairing. Few could have predicted such success for the Bolton attack at the start of the season – a fitting scenario on a day for the underdog.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

33 with Cesc(c), Drogba and Tevez or Bosingwa to go. Not great but with so many injuries and only 1 cs it'll do.

Forgive me as i'm sure it's been mentioned a million times by now but what was the story with Berbatov today?

One trick pony. Good at tap-ins and little else.

Has little to no impact on the game when the ball isn't loose in the 6-yard box.

Suprised you know so much about him. I think I've seen him play about half a dozen times which for me isn't enough to paint such a complete description of him. I saw him score a goal which wasn't a tap in against Valencia and another which wasn't a tap in against Stoke, so there are 2 examples.

That's what you said when I said Wellbeck was shit, and I think I'm going to stick by that one too.

Hernandez is essentially Michael Owen. He's a good finisher with a "pace to burn" (vomits), but he's not really a modern striker. He can't drop deep and get involved in the game like Rooney or Van Persie, and he can't hold the ball up and harass defenders like Drogba or Milito. He doesn't even run around and work hard like Olic or Tevez.

As I keep pointing out, there's a reason why Carlos Vela started ahead for Mexico of him in the World Cup.

I'll agree with you on Welbeck lacks determination and ambition and will stick mu kneck out say the same for Macheda but Hernandez has got something in him and can only get better and stronger.

I'm with you on Wellbeck I think. Put it this way I haven't seen anything from him that would suggest he is going to make a difference.
Lots of people (including myself) were slagging off Nani until this year and it looks as though they were wrong.
What's all this about modern strikers anyway, if Owen was back to his best and injury free he would have the same impact now. The game is essentially the same as it was 10 years ago, just a bit quicker. When United play 442 why would you want 2 strikers playing outside the box?

No doubting that he's a very good footballer, but do you not think that you (Utd fans on the whole) overhype him because he's been out for so long?

I'm not a United fan by any means but I always rated Hargraves. Not amazing but good technique and quite intelligent on the pitch and a country mile better than the likes of Carrick. Basically exactly the sort of player United need right now. Sad to see him go off so early but we all expected it.

P.s Rooney is trash. (for Granville)

                    Cheers scratch 😉

I thought he was a tremendous player before his injury. He is exactly the player we need to protect the back if he gets back to anything like his best. It's unlikely though and we have to get over it.
Anyway the injuy he picked up was a hammy, which may be indirectly related to his knees but if there is any consolation to take from it, it wasn't his knees.

                  he's = he was

No guarantee he'll get back to where he was 2 years ago. Just look at Rosicky after his long spell out - still shows moments of quality, but might never get back to the level he was at pre-injury.

Own goal, straight red followed by headbutting the ref, and slapping ancelotti in the face as he walks off.
