With his five goal haul grabbing the headlines in Gamweek 15, Dimitar Berbatov had himself something of a bandwagon before the big freeze put paid to Man United’s game at Blackpool last Saturday. The Bulgarian sits atop the Premier League scoring charts with eleven goals to his name so far, despite failing to find the net since gameweek 5, which was, coincidentally, the last time Wayne Rooney played 90 league minutes for Sir Alex Ferguson‘s side.

So much of the focus was on Rooney’s return to the starting XI against Blackburn that Berbatov was perhaps under less pressure for the first time in two months and resultantly stepped up to the occasion in emphatic style. Bearing in mind, then, the Bulgarian hadn’t scored in his previous seven matches, is there a correlation between the presence of Rooney and how Berbatov performs?

Clearly, as far as FPL returns go, there is a dramatic effect. This latest Numbers Game article for Members delves even further though, and examines the OPTA data for both players in attempt to assess just how reliant Berbatov has become on Rooney’s presence on the pitch.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Tevez to Rooney looks like a decent transfer for week 22...

I really should be looking that far ahead, but I just can't help myself!

Nothing...it's an error on FPL/ISM's part. We've contacted them.

Davies collected 5 yellows earlier in the season and served a ban against Burnley in the Carling Cup.

I can no longer make my joke/comment about you not having enough midfielders to play 4-5-1..

A midfield three of Scholes, Fletcher and Anderson with Rooney up top could be very effective. Bleurgh.

Carrick's been pretty good this season.

He was at fault for the Valencia goal, yeah, but everyone was giving it away time after time again, he was unlucky the capitalised on him.

I find it's best just to stay clear of United players. It avoids the embarrassment of having that lazy Bulgarian in your squad. Or the nanny-sh*gger, or the worst tackler on the planet, or the 40-something Welsh bloke, or the permanently crocked England skipper...

It just makes things easier. 🙂

10 in 5 with Rooney, although Berbatov happened to get 5 in 1 game, where he got a serious rub of the green IMO.

I think 5 in 4 is more accurate in terms of wow factor.

Perhaps it's all because defenders still buy into the idea that Rooney is a brilliant footballer, focus on him allowing Berbatov much more space....

Looks like Piers 'buggu Morgan, my hero, was bang on about Rooney not scoring 10 league goals this season. And you mocked him so much.... tut tut tut.

I think that maybe there aren’t a lot of tasty looking fixtures this week. Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and united are all up against each other. The two players who really stand out for city are both suspended. The rest of the games don’t really shout at you. Picking transfers out of the fixtures list doesn’t look easy this week.

        definitely, 2nd wildcard is sorted.

        man utd's fixtures:

        gw24: man u v brum gw25: man utd v villa

        blackpool's fixtures:

        gw24: blackpool v sunderland gw25: blackpool v west ham

awesome either way, wildcard gw24 for me

Everyone will have Rooney, Nani and Vidic from Utd plus Adam and maybe one other from Blackpool. Just depends whether people give Rooney or Nani the armband. Pretty awful time for the wildcard to be honest because it gives no advantage to the people who plan up to it.

Guys, would appreciate a bit of advise for my team this gameweek...

    Jasskelinen (Foster)
    Dann Vidic Simpson (Jones)(Kolorov)
    Nasri Nani Etherington MGP (N'Zogbia)
    Elmander Drogba Carroll

Was thinking about making some changes and bringing in some Liverpool players such as Torres and Konchesky and maybe bring in Balotelli/Tevez but now I seem unsure and think to maybe wait a week? Do you reckon I should maybe leave my team for a week, did start to think about Everton players also but I dont think there is anyone who I want long term.

      Torres, Tevez, Berbatov, Rooney.

Get one or two of them in for Elmander.

So probably a fire sale at SJP in January, Wolves are looking at Steven Taylor (out of contract at the end of the season so would be cheap), I've heard mucho rumours about Chelsea looking at big Andy Carroll for £17m, I'd be a bit suprised to be honest but he is a scary prospect if given decent service. Really worried about Enrique, he seems rightly pissed off and barring Cole and perhaps Evra is one of the best left backs in the country.
    Eeee tis all grim.

To be honest I can't see him leaving to a prem team... the top clubs are all covered at left back.

      Chelsea - Cashley
      Arsenal - Clichy / Gibbs
      Spurs - BAE / Bale

Yeah I agree entirely. I'm just looking at it from their managers points of view. All of their left backs are fairly decent and they probably have other priorities in January.

Liverpool failed on the top clubs and decent left back part 🙂 but on a serious note Woy has only just bought Konchesky so can't see him going for Enrique, if only to save face.

Well, that's opinion. The facts are there to support it. Fabregas just doesn't produce the goods in big games. As far as that journo comparing Nasri to Best. Jesus Wet(wept), the london based media over hyping arsenal players is surreal. It must make the recent failure even more bemusing to them.

As I said - some good points. I won't be drawn into any fight about Fabregas, I rate him but he still has lots to prove. Still only 23, I think there is every chance he will. Comparing Nasri to Best is also bollocks because one is in the middle of his career and the other one a legend.

Someone should really write an Article that size about Anderson though, I'd like that! A few years ago he was so overrated by United supporters that it made me sick.

True he was overrated by Utd fans, even though he had amazing games vs Gerrard, Fabs and Essien. The fall out was the adulation went to his head and he had two garbage years. Thankfully though he seems to have sorted himself out, as you'll have seen from his last 4 motm performances. He's a serious talent.

I'm sure I'll be reminded of this moment when I table my dastardly 47pts total that week! Or 99..

Obviously its miles away yet but the Rooney Vs Nani for the armband could be interesting.

Rooney on pens but more likely to be rested than Nani, especially with the Champs League on the horizon, (depending on which week United play).

Out of interest, how many GWs in advance do you look for when deciding on transfers?

I currently look at the next 5 but that sometimes goes up to about 8.

usually have a 3 week plan which never materialises. so much can happen so quickly (e.g players coming to form, injuries, players playing in a new better/worse position)that i have usually found it's costly to stubburnly stick to a transfer plan that was made weeks in advance
