The comes a time when even the greatest generals lay down their weapons and accept their “day of defeat”. Hannibal at Zama, Napoleon at Waterloo, and now Mark at Eastlands.

I know for sure after a couple of retrospective days, he’ll dust himself down and prepare for the next Gameweek. There’s nothing more dangerous than a wounded animal and what could be better than a double Gameweek to help the rehabilitation.

According to Mark, having got wind of his selection in my wildcard squad, Luka Modric laughed so hard he burst his appendix, making that the first time my bandwagon was derailed by an internal organ.

Fabregas signs his own midweek game sicknote; in his mother’s handwriting. So he’s finally transferred himself into his own Fantasy team and we about to see why he’s been holding back these last few weeks. Well that’s the theory.

Off to the island we travel with Nikola “Gulliver” Zigic, our very own coconut picker. Mark’s bringing the rum, and with my cheapo cartons of Asda value pineapple juice, we’ve got our very own Pina Colada on tap. If it looks like the heavy cargo is going to sink us we can always jettison the flotsam, or in order words chuck out Darren Bent.

Up for discussion this episode is the Manchester derby and the perils of Gameweek 28, while the debate of Charlie’s 8 or 9 yellows gets put to bed.

Oh and by the way, please accept our apologies for the “playful shenanigans” at the start of last week’s podcast. We were unaware that our microphones were hooked up and if any offense was caused, it was purely intentional.

I would have thought FFS maybe would have created a thread about the likelyhood of the Tottenham-Arsenal game going ahead in game week 28? Surely they have more information than the average punter on here, given their, 'contacts,' in finding out about the Charlie Adam situation.

good point. i suppose thats up to premierleague to decide, wheras i think they got the info on Adam directly from Blackpool. i am of course open to correction.

Arsenal v Spurs is OFF even if Arsenal don’t draw against Orient, until they have declared they want to use that date. They've had ample time to declare they want to use that date and haven't so the signs are looking that they won't.

Chelsea v Man U have declared they want to use their free date so that match is on unless Everton win in the cup.

Also if Arsenal draw v Orient the game can't happen. If Arsenal win then if they play Spurs as well that is 9 consecutive games every 3/4 dyas for a month. They have a choice about only playing 6 in a row and having a week off if they don't schedule the fixture for GW 28 so it's to their advantage surely.

Umo you keep getting that the wrong way round, if Everton win the Chelsea/United game stays on...

It (being the United game), pretty understandably, is only [re]postponed if Chelsea win.

Oh yeah, you're right. I'm usually too busy with the Arsenal game 😉 It seems to have flushed Chelsea players out of people's squads though who are wildcarding. Cue a big win over Fulham.

Do we not think that if Tottenham and Arsenal wanted the game to be played on the 2nd/3rd of March then it would have already been agreed upon? There's nothing that can actually change between now and a week before the potential game (don't the police need a week's notice?) as Arsenal's FA Cup game with Leyton Orient is only 3 or 4 days before the possible slot... So why would the clubs delay announcing the fixture? All that would achieve is irritating the fans who may have to rearrange their own personal schedule in order to attend the game. And then even after that there's a chance that the game could get rearranged again if Arsenal draw in the FA Cup.

I'm basing my transfer plan on there being no game for Arsenal and Spurs in week 28, and so am getting rid of Djourou, VDV and probably RVP when the time comes. I'll be buggered if the game is arranged at short notice.

Technically, it can be scheduled any time up until the 23rd of February (I think my dates are right). You are obviously right, in a way, that it would seem illogical for them to want to push it to the last minute to make such a choice, especially with it being such a "big" game and that it could have had the Chelsea/United type scheduling... but technically until we pass that date-line no-one can say for sure - party lines.

I'm personally working on a similar process, but that's not because what I think will happen but more along the lines of my general mantra to "prepare for the worst [this case: game off], and accept the best [this case: game on] if it happens". Or some such ilk.

A lot of people come on here who play in money leagues as well, as I'm sure a lot of people who run this site do. I have often wondered would they conceal some information if they could to gain an edge. They are under no obligation to give out or to share any of this information afterall.

There would certainly be no point of this site if we went and concealed information from people that's for sure - in fact we actively go further to try and find stuff out and verify situations, as seen with Mark's Charlie Adam investigations just yesterday, to help people out.

Guessing team selections and recommendations is all relative I suppose, but comparing the scout picks on here with the ones on TotalFPL lately, TotalFPL as been outscoring it by some distance.

I personally find the fact that Mark explains his picks more useful than the Total FPL ones, if only because you get to see the working and see if you follow it, rather than just picking a name because its magically appeared, with no explanation, on the Total FPL page.

But you are right in what you say.

You do know how the Scout Picks and their picks are worked out though, don't you?

Scouts Picks - Mark. Theirs - the polled picks across the board based on their game selections.

Mark is good, but I don't think sane people would ever expect him to be better than a consensus of peers - he is but one man up against (say) a couple of hundred each week. One man who puts in a butt load of time to this but still just that.

The Scout Picks aren't part of some competition to win the most points each week.... What would be the value of Mark picking a side including the likes of Nani, VDV, Tevez etc. every single week? That's essentially what TotalFPL does. Just by reading a few posts here you can tell who the popular players are for the week, and the Scout Picks often come up with some decent alternatives.

I've picked a really shit week to make this point! Just looked at the current Scout Picks and the team is about as standard as you could get! But in most weeks the picks aren't quite so generic.

And who blindly follows the advice of the Scout Picks anyway?

I would wager that far more people have made an INTERESTING pick based on the Scoput Picks, which I think is a good thing. Fantasy Island Risk is fantastic for this too, though I realise you haven't made any comment on that.

They may not have been as successful for this tendancy to point people in slightly more interesting directions, but hey, it's an opinion.

The team news is better than most newspapers. If there's a disagreement, the majority of the time its this place which gets it right. Certainly, they give clearer reasoning, on the Team News page, and arer much more open about the areas in which they are uncertain.

In terms of sheer knowledge, Mark and Co are definitley giving out more than they're getting. Which is why I'm happy to pay for it.

A lot of Walcott love on here. I have the option of having him or Fabs, will probably get rid of either next week.

So which will get the bigger score in week 28?

    Also:

VDV to Barton worth a 4 point hit? Sounds ludicrous, but it makes this week AND next week a lot easier. Keep in mind I already have Nolan.

He was unflagged last Friday, that's the important(*) date.

(*)assuming your question pertains to rises and the ins and outs of protection, etc.

I just checked, and both Adam and Odemwingie were yellow flagged for one day (Odemwingie - 3rd to 4th, Adam - 4th to 5th), so the fact that Adam has subsequently gone up in price, and Odemwingie hasn't, seems ridiculous.

It may be something to do with the fact that Adam was unflagged after the deadline, and Odemwingie wasn't... But I can't be bothered to try getting my head around it, I'll just end up with a headache. Price changes are what they are, and we just have to deal with them.

I've known how the "protection" works for a good side of a year now...

It astonishes me no-one else has seemingly managed to crack this particular code (especially any of the folks supposedly tracking it - bloody hell!) as it's so bloody simple.

The game would be better if you couldn't see how many people had bought/sold someone. Would cut out much of the nonsense in my opinion.

That, I am agreed on. FPL can just as easily show you the NTI/NTO at the close of a deadline without much loss of usage I would say...

However they would need to cut out the % owned by if they ever actually did want to beat the trackers, which would be a sorer loss I feel.

I think I've made one early transfer for each of the last two seasons... so yeah, I really don't care about them. However, I do (on a base level) somewhat do numbers - so following trends is interesting to me.

I may be being annoying, but I do know how it works. "Ooooooh"

Just to clarify, you are being annoying. 😉

I'm supposedly a numbers man too, so perhaps I'll have a proper look to see if I can work out how it all works.

You don't really need numbers to work it out, just a little bit of nous - really, that's all it is (though I'm sure it could be worked out backwards with the numbers)... but that's why I still do look there from time to time to see the daily trends etc.

it's when tevez and nani went up about a day or 2 after losing their red flags that i got confused about the whole issue. even if it depends on how long they were reg/yellow flagged as to how long (if at all) they are protected that still doesn't, in my mind at least, explain the adam going up and odem not going up situation this gw if jamsiep is right about them both being flagged for the same time.

Yeah, I always just assumed that it was the length of time that a player is flagged for that decides whether they get protection or not, but obviously not - as Odemwingie's case clearly shows.

Already deleted it! If anyone wants to copy it they need have been quick or a bit of wits about them...

Either way, I promise you it is right so keep it in your bonnet if you so please. Or share, whatever... but I'm not telling the world at large.

I don't think there is any logic to it, it's just (I assume) down to the fact they source live PA data on matchdays so those guys sneak through the net to allow us up to the minute scoring - by design more than planning, I imagine.

Much like whenever the PA correct a goal and for 1 minute everyone goes "oh my god Didier Drogba has two goals but he only scored one! Oh my god I love it!" - so FPL gets live sourced up to the minute data, there are slight intrinsic 'flaws' that come with it.

I honestly can't remember, probably somewhere between the two...

I think my key skill in life is as a "problem-solver" (now I just need to find a vocation where I can really do this) so I think I did stumble across it but probably while semi-consciously wanting/trying to as well - if that makes sense... it's late and I can't sleep and I'm back on here.

But, yes, I did say it really was simple.

As has been discussed, the problem is the fact that the league of leagues goes on the just the top five players, not an average of the whole league. As many of the people in the Members League are also in the Non-Members league, makes it very hard for the smaller sub-set to win.

Whats the latest on VDV? If he is out for the first game, does it make sense to transfer Malouda out for Lennon and play Lennon in the first 11 instead of VDV.

    Right now midfield is

    VDV,Nani,Walcott,Nolan
    Sub: Malouda

But it would mean taking a point hit next week to get a playing 11

Why would you double up on Tottenham players before their blank next week? Need an alternative option to that I think.

VDV out for Lennon might not be a terrible move, depending on how much of a profit you're sitting on with him.

well I would want to keep VDV. Tottenham have a good run of fixtures till end of season except for GW33 and GW36.

Haven't figured which 2 out of VDV,Lennon,Djourou,Walcott,RVP ill transfer out next week if I do the above move.

Thinking about doing what I mentioned because I feel Lennon could have a big week this week with VDV potentially out.

Doesn't VDV being out mean that Lennon is less likely to score well? After all, it's not as if VDV is stealing set pieces from Lennon of anything like that, and you'd expect Tottenham to play better with VDV in the team.

I was thinking more on the lines of VDV being the playmaker and ball going through him if he is there. And if he is not, play being spread around more. I might be wrong

i htink my biggest regret of recent times is getting etherington 2 weeks ago. dunno what i was thinking, hes coming off early , getting no shots on gaol, 2 off target a game, playing all over the place....no set pieces now cos of pennant!
im seriously thinking im gonna sell him, probably for a hit, for young maybe! Im THAT sick of him already! stupid transfer

Stoke's wingers aren't in the side to have shots on goal. They are there to win free kicks and throw-ins in dangerous positions. Both Etherington and Pennant average less than a shot a game, and that presumably includes shots from set pieces too...

By the way, I should just comment that I get a twisted sense of satisfaction from tuning into the podcast when either Mark or Granville has had a particularly bad gameweek (seeing as they're both much higher ranked than me, this doesn't happen very often).

It reminds of Fight club, where Helena Bonham Carter and Edward Norton sneak into "Annoymous" mettings, because listening to other people's justifiable moaning makes them feel alive.

    Mad wildcard?

    Foster Brgovic
Sagna r Johnsone huff (coleman kolorov
    bentley fabregas Barton Young (Cahill)
    Suarez Odenwinge (capt) Bent

You will cry where is Van persie . I have put sagna in instead, any more arsenal would leave me shot next week. Also im convinced he wont play both games . Perfect time to give chamack a run , who
scored against wolves last time they played.

Suarez will be making his full debut at home to a weak wigan outfit, can see liverpool knocking in a few

Bent and Young up against blackpool and in confident mood, will be good for the season.

Odenwinge captain . Has a very good record at home to weak teams and will certainly play both unless injured

    Whats the verdict?

Sorry guys first time posting a team, opinions on a 'maxed' out Brum defense?

    (Foster)

    Coleman - (Carr) - (R Johnson)

    (Lennon) - (Fabregas) - (Walcott) - (Barton)

Tevez - (Van Persie)- ( Odem)

    Subs: Begovic/Nanni/Rafael/Walker

Gives me 9 double weekers this week, then next week...

    Fabs --> Ash Young
    Lennon --> Cahill
(both I want long term anyway)

meaning I'll have 10 players for gw28, then when gw29 comes along I'll have 3 Brum players still and 2 Everton players (possibly 3 if I use my freebee to get Saha?)

You really and truly are putting your eggs in one basket, if it pays off, it'll be huge, but in the long term it might not be the best decision. Lose Carr imo. Are you taking a hit for those transfers?

No not taking a hit as I'm on my WC, also have my second wildcard if I need to make changes down the line, I have the option of playing Begovic this week instead of Foster, doesn't sound so risky that way

OK, Didn't realise that you had another wildcard, but you might as well think about using that next week by my reckoning.
Begovic may not play, (thats 9) others may be injured or banned that's 8 or 7players. & if you get Young and Cahill it will cost you 4 points. What do you reckon?

Yeh its nice to know I've the second wc just in case, but If I can field 10 I would take that, potentially got the 2 united players if there double still happens? all depends on my moves my rivals make really?

a 4pt hit get Cahill in isn't too bad, as I think his price will go through the roof a week later, plus I think he's a keeper for the season. fingers crossed about no injuries though!
