With over 3000 votes in the Captain Poll so far, we have ourselves a clear two-horse race. As Arsenal prepare to face Wolves and Stoke in their own backyard, it’s not too surprising to see the in-bloom crystal-limbed Robin Van Persie vying with his silver-tongued skipper, Cesc Fabregas, at the top.

We all know the positives and negatives surrounding this pairing – there’s really no need to tread old ground already covered in wonderful depth by Mark. Instead we’re going to highlight a few of the “differentials” you may just want to take a punt on. Glancing at the contenders, perhaps this week really should have more runners and riders…

Theo Walcott
Little Theo was often a hot topic of footballing debate in the summer, with pundits and fans alike. Left out of the World Cup squad and accused by Chris Waddle of “not having a footballing brain” – I’ll hold my hand up and say I was inclined to agree. A summer’s break and some hot performances later, and I’ll gladly proclaim that, regardless of whether Theo’s brain is made for football, brick-laying or quantum mechanics, the lad is getting results on the field. In the end, that’s all that matters.

Sir Paulos went into great detail to investigate all things Walcott just a couple of weeks ago and not much has changed since. Walcott has an 8.5 points per game average in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in all games started so, if you think he’ll be on the teamsheet versus Wolves and Stoke, the odds are certainly in favour that he could return strongly.

Peter Odemwingie
West Brom have picked up just four points from their last 9 fixtures, they’ve just sacked Roberto Di Matteo and appointed Roy Hodgson and Odemwingie will be out to impress as a result.

While Chris Brunt has gone off the boil after a grand start to the season, the Nigerian remains the key attacking threat. His performances have seen him pick up 9 goals to date, 7 of them in home matches, and he has duly set himself the target of 15 before the season is out. West Brom welcome West Ham and Wolves to The Hawthorns in the Gameweek, so the chances of getting closer to that target look good. Holding spot-kick duties with Brunt and Graham Dorrans breathing down his neck may not be possible after his most recent miss, but if he does keep them, it will be an extra string to his bow to add to his propensity to catch the eye of the Bonus judges.

Charlie Adam
It took him 25 weeks to score his first goal from open play and yet he is still the third highest scoring midfielder in FPL this season – just imagine his output if he starts finding the net with regularity. Little needs be said about Charlie Adam that hasn’t already been covered – he is an “obvious” pick for any Fantasy squad as he dominates all of the Blackpool set-pieces and is the biggest Bonus Point darling since Cesc Fabregas picked up 54 of them in the 2006/07 season. That’s a total that Adam could very well surpass this season.

There is of course the worry he might pick up his 10th yellow card. The FA and Blackpool have confirmed to us that Adam is currently walking a 2-game suspension tightrope. The assumption is that the FPL awarded Gary Taylor-Fletcher (right team, wrong balding stout guy) a yellow card erroneously in Gameweek 22. This means that Adam could miss his second fixture, but with Aston Villa and Spurs at Bloomfield Road, it wouldn’t surprise if Adam picks up a minimum of 10 points should he avoid the booking against Villa.

Those are your “realistic differentials”, but if you really want to dig deeper into the barrel, there are some further alternatives that deserve a glance. Jermain Defoe doesn’t have a goal to his name this season but faces Sunderland and, more importantly, a faltering Blackpool – maybe those games will kick-start his season like the Hull and Wigan fixtures did last year. Robert Huth is now Stoke’s top league goalscorer (a bit of a sad indictment, certainly), so while he continues to scare the wits out of defences from every set-piece and throw, he warrants attention. His second fixture is at the Emirates however, so investors could well be relying on further attacking returns.

Roger Johnson and Liam Ridgewell are defenders of a similar vein. These two are a menace at set-pieces; tie that to the potential clean sheets at home to Stoke and Newcastle and the Brum pair look decent options. Those willing to forget the Mark Schwarzer tragedy of 2009 may stake their reputation on goalkeeper Ben Foster, while David Bentley and Craig Gardner offer attacking threat and share the various set-piece taking spoils.

Newcastle’s squad offers a couple of options, with Kevin Nolan, lest we forget, the Premier League’s joint top scoring midfielder.Joey Barton meanwhile, now seems to have a set-piece taking monopoly in his Bonus point boosted armoury.

Then there’s still room for Fantasy Favourites without double headers this week. Carlos Tevez will be taking the short trip back to old club United this week while Wayne Rooney will be playing host as both look to be the difference maker. Luis Suarez should make his first home start against Wigan – a potentially obliging fixture for the Uruguayan. Raul Meireles with his four goals in five games as support striker has the form going into said fixture too.

…Or you could just captain Robin Van Persie or Cesc Fabregas.

Whoever you end up deciding to give your armband to, make sure you head back to the front page and place your bets on the poll in the middle column, then hot-step your way back here and let us know your choice.

    Morning chaps

My WC team so far is:

    Foster
    Huth, Simpson, Kelly
    Fabs, Walcott, VDV, Adam
    RVP (c), Odem, Tevez

    Begovic, Coleman, Kolorav, Nani

    A few questions:

    1. Should Simpson be replaced with Carr or Kyle Walker?
    2. Should VDVD be replaced with Bentley, A.Young, Barton or Kevin Nolan?

(I dont want to loose VDV as I would 0.5m on him)

    Thanks lads

simpson isnt the most ideal DGW defender, but i dont know if Id use a transfer to replace him. Between him kolarov and coleman, someone will come good, the hard part is picking which. if vdv only plays blackpool, still as good a matchup as just about any other option IMO, and if he doesnt go, you could do worse than settle for the leader in points in FPL, Nani. Id bump nani up to 1st sub. Maybe im being too conservative, but if you can save a transfer, this is the week to do it. with blanks, adam on the verge of suspension, etc. , 2 freebies next week could be very very important.

FABREGAS or WALCOTT from here on out?

I’ve got Fabregas, but wonder if Walcott will garner just as many points, if not more? Making the switch would also free up almost 5m to put elsewhere in my team…

For me this conundrum completely depends on RVP's ability to stay fit... he steals all of Fabregas' set piece points, and a lot of the play goes through him. With RVP fit, it's Walcott all the way for me.

Can I please focus the Arsenal debate for this gameweek? Walcott, Fabregas and RVP are obvious captaincy choices but with Barcelona match coming up there is a split opinion as to who will be benched for the Wolves game. Logic says that he who plays both games would be the best captain choice. Can someone please put himself in Wenger's shoes and make the predictions?

I'll do it then. You can call me Wengarg.

All three to start both games but with the risk to be taken off early.

Fabregas most likely to get the most minutes, RVP and Walcott slightly less.

Thanks for the feedback folks and I've read the stuff further down the page. I think I'm of the opinion that all 3 players will be rested at some stage in the Wolves game though potentially all 3 may start so that Wenger is able to sub them off after 65 minutes - which is when he makes most substitutions. Walcott is potentially the most at risk because he played midweek however what about Arshavin? He could play both games because Wenger will feel he could be risked even though he played midweek too? Would Arshavin for Walcott be a good move in a wildcard gameweek??

Personally I think Walcott is the least likely to get 90 minutes in both games. He can be an impact sub and played mid-week. Additionally he has replacement in Arshavin in the first game and possibly a returning Nasri in the second.
I could see RVP playing against Wolves and Barca and then being rested against Stoke who might fare less well against Chamakh.
Fabs would seem to most likely to start both but may be given a rest against stoke after 60 minutes if Nasri needs a run out.
      Just my two cents.

Arsenal will play Leyton Orient in the FA Cup between Barca and Stoke, so the big guns will get their rest then. The Wolves game is going to be the one for rotation (if Wenger decides to rotate at all), not Stoke.

Personally, I'd guess RVP, Djourou and Song will be given rests this weekend, with the rest of the first teamers starting. That's only a guess though.

I'm with Kyle, with Chamakh and Bendtner waiting in the wings, it's easy for Wenger to bench RVP. WIth Nasri still sidelined, Fabs needs to play.

RVP to be rested with Chamakh coming in. Wenger perhaps will also have at the back of his mind Chamakh scoring a brace in a 2-0 win at Wolves earlier in the season. In fact Chamakh would be a good pick if it wasn't for the Huddersfield FA Cup game as he'll most likely play that one with RVP playing v Stoke.

Fabregas should start both although how far past 60mins in each is very dependent on the scoreline, although the Newcastle game will be fresh in Wenger's memory.

Ultimately the Champs Lge v Barcelona is ridiculously important to Wenger and RVP and Walcott could both be saved. Because of the slip up against Newcastle and the fact he is club captain, Fabs looks the best bet for captaincy from Arsenal and if RVP is benched then Fab is on pens.

To add to this I would also make RVP also likely to be benched for the Sunderland game just before the 2nd leg, making RVP not as obvious a selection as the masses believe.

Just an observation on the benching of Utd. and City players.

In 2011 City have conceded the following goals to the following teams.

    Leicester - 2
    Wolves - 3
    Leicester - 2
    Villa - 1
    Notts County - 2
    Birmingham - 2

I know Mancicni is likely to set up to defend but it's something to think about, Nani starts ahead of Tevez for me.

I will be taking Adam out on WC this week, he has been good to me, but he can only get so many pens and poxy goals from corners which have flattered to decieve all season.

I will regret getting rid of him when he gets 3 BP's at the weekend, but I think it is not worth the risk of losing him for two games when I can get him out on WC this week.

Been thinking about this. Bookings aside, Adam could be the highest scoring player over the next 2 gameweeks given his fixtures. Do you really want to throw that away on the basis that he might get booked? Definately have a Plan B, but hang fire on actually transfering him out.

Much happier to have Smalling in defence than Evans, good news if you ask me anything, Smalling will be a great defender, always impresses me on the ball.

What are peoples thoughts on Hodgson and how he will impact West Brom's style of play, should I be getting in Jara for 2 cleanies this DGW ;)?

Only if you DGW player doesn't play either game will Huth come in for him... if say VDV starts this weekend, goes off injured and misses the 2nd DGW game, you'll have VDV's 1pt with Huth sat on the bench.

Yep ... I've had Ferguson on the bench forever because he is guaranteed to play plus he's cheap as chips.

I think he could get a maximum of 11 or a more likely 5/6.

He's staying on my bench because I'd kick myself if I take out either Nani or Tevez and they score!

Played my WC a couple of weeks ago to take advantage of various DGWs. Planning on using my next few weeks of transfers to end up with a team I plan to keep for the rest of the reason (barring any necessary tweaks).

    Foster, Begovic,
    Rafael, Huth, Kolarov, Bardsley, Kelly
Nani, Van der Vaart, Cahill, Walcott, Adam,
    Tevez, Van Persie, Bent

    How's this?

imo it's a bit futile to have one plan for the rest of the year. Plan for the next 5 and work from there. Better to play the fixtures with some fringe players.

Without seeing your current team it's hard to comment.

Right guys, on my WC, have 3 questions remaining...

    http://fantasy.premierleague.com/M/entryhist.mc?id=80170

    For transfers-
Huth or Kelly? (I already have Begovic)
    Adam or Barton?

    For selection-
    VDV or Nani?

For anyone that cares to read on, the full team is

    Foster, Begovic
    Kolarov, Coleman, Walker, RJohnson, Huth/Kelly
    Nani, VDV, Fabregas, Walcott, Adam/Barton
    Tevez, RVP, Odemwingie

Your thoughts are, as always, appreciated.

i personally prefer not doubling up in defence, so id go kelly. If pool keep it up, he may be the best value at defender for the rest of the season. Id go barton because of adams suspension looming. he averages a yellow every 2.5 games so hes going to be due by the end of this GW.

It's a tough one, literally could go either way.

My gut feeling is Fabs because i think he is the more likely to play both (though i think they both will), and he has been due a massive haul for a while, though RVP's returns have been awesome last few weeks.

Will probably bottle it and go RVP

Yeah, that was the one. Really? i thought he looked just like him, great dribbler, final ball was lacking. But he's only 18. I thought Hleb was great for us, yes it was frustrating when he didn't shoot but his all round play was excellent.

Yeah, Miyachi's final ball was lacking, but he was playing on the left, and kept trying to knock it in with his weaker foot (which was surprising considering he wouldn't even touch it with his left when dribbling). At least he was trying to be direct.

Excellent is over-selling Hleb a bit. He was good, but turned too many games into frustration-fests because he wouldn't ever try something adventurous.
