The start of the season saw Nani as something of an outside bet when weighing up midfield options, with Antonio Valencia the favoured Man United pick. Nani had made just 23 league appearances the previous season compared to Valencia’s 34, and was on the pitch for 1,000+ minutes less; with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 8.0, his selection was simply too much of a risk for many Fantasy managers.

Valencia’s injury in United’s Champions League match with Rangers, however, changed matters completely and allowed Nani to step up and cement his place as a first-team regular. By gameweek 10, he’d hit double figures four times and had failed to score or assist in just three matches for United. Nani continued to pick up the points hauls and ended with campaign on 198 pts, one of the most surprise top-scoring FPL players in recent seasons.

The Statistics

That 8.0 starting price quickly rocketed, with a leap of 0.9 from gameweek 3-10 indicative of the winger’s growing popularity amongst Fantasy managers. It’s difficult to pick out one single week as his stand-out performance; with eight double points haul for the season in total, Nani offered a brilliant consistency for a long period of time, though it’s worth noting that seven of those eight big scores came at Old Trafford.

He eventually finished the season on 9 goals, 18 assists -the Premier League’s top creator- and was rewarded for his displays in the shape of 25 Bonus Points but, despite this, Nani’s points returns definitely tailed off from gameweek 27; he didn’t find the net from early February onwards and failed to either score or assist in his last five starts for United.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt a fit-again Valencia will raise question marks over both Nani’s number of starts and points returns next season. It’s no coincidence that Nani’s above-mentioned drop in form coincided with Valencia’s return from injury in gameweek 30 and perhaps suggests diminishing returns when the pair take to the field together.

One factor in his favour is Nani’s adaptability; whereas Valencia is suited solely to the right wing role, Nani is just as effective on either flank and his Old Trafford points returns illustrate just how devastating he can be at home. Next season could prove a real source of frustration in that respect; Nani will see a hefty jump in price (10.0 to 10.5 seems more than possible) but with the chances of decreasing game time likely, could prove too pricey a player to have if he’s not guaranteed starts. A repeat of those double-figure points returns, then, could resultantly catch out those Fantasy managers without him in their squads.

Just so people have some sort of perspective...

We paid £16.5M for Modric and he's got a few years left on his contract. If sell him off for anything less than £30M it's a travesty. I'm pretty resigned to him going now that Scholes has retired and Modric is making all the noises you do before you end up swapping clubs though. Anyway, the moment he leaves White Hart Lane he takes all of our ambition to actually contend for a top four spot with him.

I'd be more worried by Chelsea's interest. We're skint, Roman certainly isn't. At least with us you might Berba back? Berba + VdV could be interesting.

Hah, Redknapp has already put a dampner on that, firstly by claiming 5th is "as good as it gets" and then being strongly linked to a move away.

If your manager doesn't think you belong in the top 4, you've got bigger problems than Modric leaving.

        True, and he's right.

Chelsea, Man United (do have money - seen £160M quoted) and City will all spend, spend, spend and are nailed on top four. Liverpool haven't spent any money yet under the new owners and given post-Hodgson form are clearly back to top four contenders. Arsenal... who knows what Wenger will do but assuming he fixes any of the problems he has then you'd expect near year to go better for them.

So, maybe realistically we can not lose Modric, hope this Internacional kid we've signed will do the business up front or Defoe sorts himself out while Arsenal and Liverpool slip up so we can get fourth, woo.

PS: Berba, meh... Wrong side of 30, doesn't work, bad history at the lane versus joint top scorer 2010/11 while basically playing half a season... I'd take him if he's cheap (saw some ridiculous article that Newcastle were after him for £7.5M)

It's a classic stage 3 of Harry Redknapp's "How to ruin a football club" plan. After using twice the GDP of Latvia to buy a fleeting moment of glory, Spurs are going to have to sell all their good players to pay for the real failure this season of not making the top 4.

Hmm bit tough on 'Arry that. Chelsea and City are spending 80 times the GDP of latvia every transfer window, United are managed by a god and Arsenal are consistent without winning anything. Not making the top 4 isn't a failure in my eyes.

Haven't Spurs spent more than Chelsea recently? Regardless, he should still have prioritised the league more than he did.

We have spent a bit and got some crocks sitting around on massive wages, Robbie Keane etc! But we did get £30M out of Berba not that long ago.

Squad to do with major trimming though... could easily lose: Kranjcar, Palacios, Woodgate, Hutton, dos Santos, Khumalo, Jenas, Bostock, Livermore.

Also if we get anyone in to replace them then Gomes, one of Kaboul/Bassong and one of Crouch/Defoe/Pav could also go.

            Here are some good alternatives:
            184 Tonga 301m
185 Federated States of Micronesia 238.1m
186 São Tomé and Príncipe 187m
            — Cook Islands 183.2m
            — Anguilla 175.4m
            187 Palau 164m
            188 Marshall Islands 161.7m
            189 Kiribati 152m
            — Falkland Islands 105.1m
            190 Tuvalu 14.94m
            — Niue 10.01m

I'd suggest Tonga as a more realistic target, although it's still quite obviously a lot more money than we're talking about.

Yeah, it's nice that some people in the media actually realise that video games are a) one of this country's most promising industry sectors and b) becoming more lucrative than many big films.

Unfortunately it's not quite so clear cut as that. It's a shame, but while everyone draws parallels to the film industry, it started far more slowly and has its own heritage, which is kind of being buried.

It's very sad to see the dominance of EA, and developers forced into churning out sequels without being able to flex much creative muscle.

And even worse when someone comes up with a bright new idea like Frozen Synapse, gets bought by a large studio (ugh, Activision especially) and then gets dumped a few years later.

We've recently seen the decline of some great studios (Hudson soft (if they count), Bizzare, etc), but the likes of Sega and Take 2/Rockstar give me hope.

I think the trouble is that the heads of these companies often couldn't give 2 shits about the final product, and it's going to be some time before there are more people from the "ground floor" actually making those decisions.

And even that will be a shame, because that's not what they're great at.

Oh sequels aren't a bad thing at all. I just think that they need to be at least 2 years apart to avoid market saturation, and build anticipation, and I think people need to invest a decent amount of money and resource into new IPs. Like 50/50.

Capcom are awful at that sometimes, they have some huge IPs and just keep milking them, they just can't stop themselves. But they kind of try with new titles.

Yeah, Total War ... I'm toying with the idea of updating my PC completely, or just maintaining it. The only PC game I think I'd play is the Total War series TBH (if I updated it). It's certainly destined to go down as a classic, at least in my circle.

Brink does look interesting, but I'm just so Meh with FPS. MW2 kept me entertained, but Halo is just a bit ... I don't know.
But yeah Bethesda are a good team.

It's just a shame that people sitting in a room and doing whatever they damn want isn't a good business model (see Duke Nukem Forever).

Yo, any computer experts on here?

I have a Dell Dimension desktop (2003), it is so old it doesn't have wireless network capability, neither is is connected to the internet.

I have a new Macbook, and I want to transfer all my music from the Dell PC over to my Macbook. Two questions:

    (1) Does anyone know is there a cable I can do this with, where the Macbook would recognise the PC as an "external hard drive" and be able to copy the stuff across, and

    (2) If the answer to (1) is negative, I presume my only option is to transfer the stuff across to an external hard drive from the PC, and then plug the hard drive into the Macbook, this should work right?

I really dont want to have to buy a hard drive for this purpose, but I will if I have to. Very annoying, I went into Compustore here in Cork yesterday and this dude gave me a Firewire cable, and then I went home I realised that the Macbook doesn't havea Firewire slot, and I wasn't sure if my PC would either. Both have Ethernet slots, I wonder could I hook up this way?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey apparantly the Mac will auto-correct a non-crossover for this purpose, so you just need a regular ethernet cable. From googling "file transfer" PC mac crossover:

Yeah, the iPod idea would work. Otherwise, it's easy to set up ethernet sharing between a Mac and a PC. If your PC is hooked up to a home router, and has an address such as 192.168.1.105, then you can plug your Mac into the same router. Set up sharing on the PC (I think you just have to right-click on a folder to share it), and call it, e.g. PCstuff. Then on the Mac, with the Finder open, go to "Go' on top menu bar, click "Connect to server" and enter "smb://192.168.1.105/PCstuff, and voila, it appears in your Finder. Just drag files as you wish.

And, you never need a cross-over ethernet cable with a Mac; it can deal with either a cross-over or direct-wired cable transparently.

And, finally, USB 2.0 is slow compared to FireWire.

Get yourself a Media player. Its basically a hard drive with video output that can be connected to a TV. So you can DL your movies and fire them on there also to watch through the TV. You can also put on data files on there as well. I got a 1TB for like £65.

I could get it I suppose, but when I really enjoy Kung Fu movies :/

Donna's choice on Sunday was "Into the Wild" though. That was surprisingly good.

Yeah, I suppose they were always favoured above him. I really think that they should just concentrate on the younger players now and leave out Gerrard, Lampard, Terry etc as they've had numerous chances to perform for England and rarely proved their worth.
Mind you I think we should pull out of FIFA altogether until it is purged of Blatter and his cronies, meaning no-one would get a game for England unless a few other noble countries joined us.

I need to decide what to get for my birthday. Donna's getting a laptop, so we're spending about £150 on each other.

I'm tempted by Portal 2 and LA Noire, although I'll probably wait until I can get them for half the price (2 months?). Then there's Golden Sun 3 for the DS, and Red Dead Redemption.

Then I need some new hoodies, and some various bits and pieces (not fun stuff), and about £200 worth of shelving.

Or I could get a new CPU/Motherboard/RAM, but I'll probably wait a year and get a core i7.

And this. This is nuts. http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/cpucoolers/nof-cr-100a

LA Noire is ok. I'd give it maybe 6.5/10, its very repetitive.
Red Dead Redemption is possibly the most over-rated game I have ever played. Save the games until November when Dead Island, Skyrim, MW3, BF3 etc all come out. Get LA Noire cheap if poss.

Do you actually get any useful info - anything that you really need to think about - from these clues? Or is it just pointlessly abstract?

Some nice motherboards out at the moment. I built my computer and got a MSI Fuzion 870a which can use both types of cards ATI/NVID together. Means you can always bung your best one in the next slot for the extra FPS boost.

    BETTING

My gambling career continues this evening with the Portugal-Germany U21 game.

Stuck £44 on after 15min (with the game at 2-1) for the first half to have over 3.5 goals (at 8/11).

I had to wait until the 44th minute for a 4th goal! Was sh*tting it...

    Thanks for reading.

It's the return leg in Geneva tonight - AC Bellinzona are 1-0 up after the first match at the Stadio Comunale. Not sure who I'd like to win: Servette's history (17 league titles) and fan potential (a crowd of 20,000 is expected this evening), added to their fightback from bankruptcy means that I'd love to see les Grenats return to the Swiss Super League after an absence of six years.

But if Bellinzona go down, this would mean that the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland would be without top-flight representation next season. Lugano missed out on promotion again this year due to their traditional crisis of nerves.

I have no real idea about the U21, so do they usually play with that set up? Surely Sturridge has to fit in somewhere, he's a better player than Albrighton, Cleverley and Welbeck - and I haven't seen enough of Wickham.

P.S. I liked it how Cleverley almost single handedly saved Wigan from relegation. Oh wait.... He was dropped for the most important game of the season. Oops.

was listening to Talk Sport today. Ur man John Mc Cririck was on talkin about a few changes he would make to football.
    1. make the nets 6" wider and 6" taller.
    2. If it's a draw give each team one point and then let them have a pen shoot out for an extra point
    3. make the game 80 mins, with 4 quarters, timed like in american football so that there is more football played
    4. have a salary cap

I thought no 1 was a good one. It should mean more goals. when they decided on the size of the nets, way back then, the average size of men was a lot smaller, probably about 5'5" ish. a big man was 6ft. Now keepers are 6'6" with the reflexes of a cat. make them bigger, give us more goals. Two and three were crap.

Again, just saying video technology means nothing. For goal-line incidents? Offsides? Penalties? Fouls? You can't just say 'bring in video technology' and that's that.

it would need to be a FIFA directive. i think that a salary cap will be forced upon them. the fans can't afford to keep forking out that sort of money to fund their wages. Their greed will be their downfall (although if i was any good at footie i would take the money too)

It's so not happening that it's hardly worth discussing. The fans CAN afford to keep going, that's why the tickets are priced as they are, that's simple economics. It's just some fans that could afford to go once upon a time can't now. This isn't even an issue in other countries...Germany has decent ticket prices, for example.

So FIFA are going to intervene and set salary caps for each different country? When will this be?

They're expensive in the Premier League, I totally agree. But it's supply and demand, if the clubs weren't making enough money from ticket prices and were worried about having full stadiums then they'd reduce the ticket prices. That's happening in some clubs, but you don't need a FIFA directive for that. At the moment, there's more than enough fans who are able to pay the ticket prices.

I doubt they'll still be there in 10 years and the clubs will be in trouble then, but that's nothing to do with salary caps.

so for the time being you think it's ok but in the future there will be trouble for some clubs. Sounds like an argument for salary caps to me.
All this started from John McCririck. He's a mixing BSTD. where's Mark. Ban Mc Cririck from being mentioned again.

No I don't think it's ok, but it's not a worldwide problem, hence for the Premier League to look at and not FIFA.
