West Ham shattered their club transfer record with the capture of Wolves’ winger Matt Jarvis, shelling out a reported £10.75 million on an uncapped player who suffered the bitter taste of relegation last season. Even so, Hammers boss Sam Allardyce was glowing from the prospect of plucking the flying winger from Molineux, heaping praise on the former Gillingham man and building the winger as a key attacking player for what could be another Premier League survival fight for Jarvis…

Certainly from an attacking sense he [Jarvis] is one of the best final-third crossers in the Premier League and his stats were very good at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He delivers at the business end of the field and creates a lot of chances. He is a player who can give opposition defences an awful lot of trouble and we are hoping he will produce that for us.

The Statistics

Allardyce loves a stat and, sure enough, Jarvis showed up well last season: only Bolton’s Martin Petrov attempting and succeeding with more crosses amongst the league’s midfielders, reinforcing Big Sam’s argument that he is getting a reliable supply from the flanks for his millions. Of course, the trick is to convert them – it has to be said that even with Steven Fletcher, a player who commanded a fee of £14 million from Sunderland last week, Wolves struggled to exploit Jarvis’ toil and tricky. Allardyce will be looking to the likes of Carlton Cole and Kevin Nolan, to cash in on the anticipated flood of chances from the fleet-footed winger.

Jarvis can produce himself. His returns last season were strong enough to warrant Fantasy attention, with eight goals and six assists in 37 starts, showing a marked improvement from his output in 2010/11 – four goals and eight assists.

Allardyce will likely expect and need more from Jarvis, particularly with the hefty price tag around his neck. He was given an instant debut at Swansea last weekend and troubled the Welsh side in the first half enough to suggest that he has the appetite to build on those numbers with Wolves.

The Prospects

In Fantasy terms, Jarvis’ prospects are dented by a price tag of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – identical to that of Kevin Nolan, whereas in the Sky Sports game there is just a 0.1 difference in Jarvis’ favour. In both cases then, when our attention turns to West Ham’s midfield assets, it’s likely to be Nolan who attracts investment due to his raw goal potential, or even the cheaper Mark Noble with spot-kicks and set-pieces in his locker.

At this moment in time, the Hammers have an array of fixtures on the horizon which present Allardyce with the opportunity to build a platform for survival. With a 1-0 win over a disappointing Villa earned on the opening day, the Hammers take on Fulham at Upton Park this weekend and have Sunderland and Southampton at home to follow. Away trips to Norwich and QPR also provide potential, so interest in the West Ham squad could well peak in the coming weeks.

Jarvis will doubtless be a key figure should the Hammers flourish and exploit their kind match-ups, although it will likely be Nolan who, at least initially, tempts investment. Fantasy managers will need to see evidence that Jarvis is not only being given the opportunities to beat his man and deliver crosses, but also that West Ham are able to convert the opportunities he provides. A scattering of goal attempts would also be desirable if we are to consider Big Sam’s acquisition over the grizzled goal-getting power of Nolan.

Oh the quality of advice given here... I look at it and take it all in but will favour those that link their team or those that have given good advice in the past, if not linked. If you finished outside of the top 100k last year I am dubious. Yup, that means I disregard a hell of a lot of talk here 🙂

I do think this 'rank' thing is well over-stressed, though. Much of the game is luck. Advice should be considered based on many factors - and you might include rank here.

Rubbish. Rank is not down to luck, well not getting into top 10k - higher than that needs an element of luck but 10k versus 400k is certainly not luck. 🙂

It can be down to luck. But probably isnt.

That's the way getting a slight advantage on multiple statistical iterations works.

'Much of the game is down to luck'

You read it wrong. I'm right.

Good, informed players can stack the probabilities their way ... but there are far too many variables that are unknown to chalk rank entirely to skill.

Players getting sick, red cards (Torres last year?), waterlogged pitches, etc., etc.

Suppose sometimes it depends on how serious you have taken the game before.

It was only really last season that I bothered checking my team after selecting at the beginning of the season, as most of my mates played other dream team games instead.

Finished 56,546, which after some massive mistakes early doors I was happy enough with.

Finished 9,825 in 06/07 somehow with a dead team.

The other seasons I came as expected, in the 09/10 and 10/11 I think I made changes from early April onwards after realising I had a chance in a few mini leagues.

I am the exact same here. I have only took this game semi-seriously once before. I do however believe I tend to come out with some sound advice.

In a way I do the same thing as Vets when I do receive advice (check their link) and if the have a horrible history I take it with a pinch of salt, instead of completely disregarding it

However if it is falling on deaf ears there may be little point in me expressing my opinion. And I may as well just revert to stalking the site without making any kind of contribution whatsoever

Nastasic is 19 so is not a threat yet, more a player for the future. Kolo was useless against Liverpool and I would expect Lescott to dome back in. You may want to get rid of him at some point though as he's risky.

With Arsenal losing RVP and Song (on top of other losses in recent years), 4th place must be the most open that it has been for years...

    Arsenal
    Tottenham
    Newcastle
    Liverpool
    Everton

I think that any of the above could conceivably do it. With their settled team I think Newcastle have a great chance but they need to be fairly lucky with injuries as their squad depth is not great. Same for Everton.

I think Chelsea with their signings have definitely closed the gap on Manchester so I'd be very surprised if they were outside the top 3. If you look purely at the size of their midfield the squad depth is very very good. Was saying this before the season started so isn't based on their great start!

no real concerns for me this week so looking to use my free transfer to get rid of ciaran clark before he goes down in price tonight or tomorrow. its a toss up right now between figueroa and cuellar. lots of love for cuellar here but i fancy swans to score this week. figueroa playing in midfield this season so oop and home to stoke looks the better pick and i might need him with gibbs(liv), demel(FUL) and hangeland(whm) slated to start for me which isn't horrible, maybe drop gibbs for figs as i can't see arsenal keeping a third cleanie in a row. i already have maloney but not playing him this week and i feel i need some sunderland cover for the future so do i just pick up cuellar now and be done with it?

I can see Fig being moved back to central defence. Alcaraz is suspended I think (may need to check re carling cup game) and Beausejour usually plays left wing back. Boyce as right wing back is more assured of a midfield role.

It was pointed out on here yesterday that with Beusejour back Figueroa is a risk, plus with Alcaraz suspended he will play in the back 3. On that basis Boyce is a better prospect

cant afford boyce so maybe cuellar is the man for the job but will probably bench him this weekend. i'd save the transfer so i have 2 next week but don't want to lose any team value just yet so clark needs to go now. any other 4.5 defenders worth a look this week?

Ok then mid dilemma, done the WC.

Should I get Hazard in now at 9.9 before he inevitably rises another .2 mil by GW4 or get Lennon/Pienaar in
and have a mid of Lennon/Pienaar, Toure, Michu and Nolan.

Or get in him now and play the mid of Maloney, Toure, Michu and Nolan.

Isn't Hazard rise slowing down? Is it impossible that when casuals see him getting 0 points they'll transfer him out and he'll drop? Also a lot of people WCed this week, could be carrying him for the price rises and transferring him out before GW3 starts. I'm waiting until saturday at least.

A 50/50 call, which is obviously why you ask. Tevez at home ... but I reckon the intangible of being the new guy, the new anticipated guy, the new anticipated guy with his biggest competition out for two months, gives RVP the strong desire to pump 'em in.

If I had both, I'd (C) RVP. As it is, I'm going Tevez.

AVB likes a bit of mobility from his midfielders. Therefore I think he'll use Siggy rather than VdV. Rotation risk anyway. Take into consideration that Adebayor and Dembele should be ready to play. That's definately a step up from Defoe and Livermore, and it should make Bale and Siggy/VdV look like better prospects.

Of all the GK's we were linked to in summer - and there were many - Green was the one I least wanted to get!!

Cheekiest of punts, but I think I'll go with Dzeko this week. I'll transfer him out next week probably for Fletcher (when I see how he goes). Dzeko played both games vs QPR last year, the first as a starter, the second as a sub. He scored 1 and had 1 assist in the first match vs QPR, and in the second...we all remember his scoring in the last game of the season vs QPR. Surely Mancini must consider how a strikers history against another team/defence. Right?
