A change in formation during the latter part of Wigan’s 2011-12 season transformed the fortunes of right-back and occasional centre-half Emmerson Boyce. Shifted out of defence and handed a role on the right of the Latics’ midfield, Boyce and fellow wide man Jean Beausejour patrolled the flanks magnificently to help secure Wigan’s Premier League safety over the final few months of the previous campaign.

Bearing in mind his side registered seven wins in their final nine matches last time round, it’s no surprise to see Roberto Martinez stick with this ploy. Having recovered from their opening day defeat to Chelsea, the Latics bounced back with a win and clean sheet at St Mary’s last weekend and, with a strong run of fixtures on the horizon, Boyce has climbed his way up our Watchlist rankings.

Priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, the Latics man – who is classified as a defender in both games – offers us an intriguing mid-price alternative over the next few Gameweeks and, as Martinez’s men square up to a kind run of opponents (STO, mun, FUL, sun, EVE, swa), Boyce has the potential for points at both ends of the pitch. Granted, the Gameweek 4 clash with United stands out in this short term fixture list but, as Wigan’s 1-0 home win over the Red Devils last season showed, it will not be an encounter that is likely to intimidate Martinez.

In his six years at the club, Boyce has only scored seven goals for Wigan but, with three of those goals arriving during last season’s formation shift, savvy managers will have spotted his strong potential for points over the coming campaign. The last fixture of 2011/12 saw him bag a brace against Wolves, including a spectacular volley, highlighting the attacking capabilities of the former Barbados international.

Already this season we have seen how integral Boyce’s delivery from the flank is to Wigan’s game plan. His well worked cross, that ultimately Manuel Figueroa failed to convert, proved to be the Latics’ best attempt on goal during the first half of their 2-0 victory over Southampton. While he’s yet to pick up an assist, Boyce has done enough to suggest he could well be on the cusp of attacking returns as Martinez looks to build on their Gameweek 2 triumph and avoid the customary battle to beat the drop.

Well, they do have a few decent ones every now and then with CS potential. And you have to remember that they tightened up considerably at the back at the end of last season so I'm not against investing in their defense but may wait a few weeks.

Mmm...with Stoke and Fulham at home next? That's Stoke who struggled to score away from home all last season and wouldn't have scored in the league this had it not been for Federici's margarine hands. Then it's Fulham who have no Dempsey and have just arguably lost their most influential and creative player.

In addition, Wigan reduced Chelsea to a largely ineffectual display - I saw a stat that said that, against Wigan, Chelsea made the fewest passes in the opponents half since 2007.

I'd say if you're going to punt on budget clean sheets at all - Wigan look the best option in the next three GW's. Regardless of cleanies - we're also talking about a player who has proven to offer an end product at the other end in Wigan's system.

Fulham are looking good without Dempsey. Everton and Swansea are on form. United are United. I agree that Stoke look very poor going forward and Wigan will have a good chance of a cleanie there. Sunderland could go either way imo. Although I'm not usually correct when it comes to predicting clean sheets 🙂

I'm not sure Fulham will find it easy to adjust without Dembele. He was absolutely central to their all-round play and Richardson isn't going to compensate. I'm sure Jol will act in the next 24-hours but the loss of Dembele could really shake them. Speculative of course, but enough for me to back Wigan against them in a few weeks time.

I've always he is a good coach and tactician. His man management skills at Chelsea though came across as very poor which may have been down to the owners instructions, the players' hissy fits or his own inexperience. He really just needs to be given time at a club

Chelsea is a club where it's known that the manager has no real power. It's Players and Owner. A manager has to 'buddy up' o them or they'll kill him. And buddying up means no rocking the boat, selection/tactics-wise.

        Toxic environment for a manager.

Yep and he didn't just leave things as they were, he really tried to change their whole style of football and in reality wasnt given the time to achieve that, unfortunately nowadays managers don't seem to get the time to do things this way.

He has a lot to prove, and with all the transfers he has made he better do it pretty quick. But no, I dont think he is a bad manager at all.. But I do think he will need some time, he really seems to want everything exactly like he wants it (nothing bad).
If spurs dont shape up I think he could get the sack, and never be welcome to England again.. 😀

I do think he will do good tho (hopefully not too good)

"as Martinez’s men square up to a kind run of opponents (STO, mun, FUL, sun, EVE, swa)"

    Haha, you reckon?

Man U away speaks for itself.
    Sunderland away won't be easy
    Everton are on absolute fire
Swansea away will be tough as we know how good Swansea have been and how good they tend to be at home.

I'd say out of those 6 games, only 2 could be classified as kind and that's debatable with STOKE FULHAM home games.

Very thorough examination of City's tactics and for the most part well written and sensible. I liked the chalkboards too to illustrate your points.

A few issues you may wish to edit:
      - "grew speculation" isn't a great phrase. "sparked specualtion" or "increased specualtion".
      - "Zabaleta patrols the left flank". You mean the right flank? You have it mixed up when speaking about Clichy on the right as well.
      - Give examples of when these formations were used. I'm not sure I've seen the 4-2-3-1 in action.

And without Aguero, I think the best Mancini can do is play one striker and let play Silva + Nasri + Yaya as three attacking MF.

Good write up. Looking at those line-ups I was just thinking that now that Johnson has gone all of City's width comes from the full-backs seeing as Silva and Nasri play very centrally. If the full-back rotation will ever swap I'll be in there like swimwear!

I am a big fan of Boyce, had him for the run in last year and it was a dream.

The opening fixtures and price tag put me off a bit but looking at the last 3 games, I get the feeling the answer to the earlier 'Burning Question' article is that Wigan CAN start well. I would definitely have him in if I was on WC.

I remember u advising me to get him for a hit in the last 2 GW's last year telling me that he is a beast. I didn't listen although 😀 But he scored. Spot on and note to my self about paying more attention to your advice.

      Cheers,

P.S. How is the start of the season shaping up for you. When do you plan to WC or still don't have a clue?

I have 140pts from the first two gameweeks. An average of 70 every week will do me rightly but I AM slightly disappointed considering the feast of returns others have had. I'm sitting at about 150k, much better than outside the top 1million in GW10 last year.

I won't wildcard as I have Ivan, RVP, Michu, Tevez and now Hazard so I will continue to assess my options. Before GW7 is the plan but if my team is fine then, I'll hold it for longer.

        How about you?

My average is 65pts per week. Had decent GW 1 then brought Rooney for Kun and aptained him. Felt down in rankings but still happy with my team. Made some hits to bring all the players mentioned beside Hazard. Will bring him in next week, probably for a hit. I still like my team so this year could be the only one when I hold my WC longer. Time will tell.

GW5 or GW8 are good weeks to play it IMO. If I hold until then will wait big DGW.\

          Cheers and good luck.

P.S. Way much then last year, I was in the same boat as u barely in top 1m. 65ppg is good I assume. Sustainability of points is what is creating the excellent rankings IMO.

I was on a wc I'd also get Boyce in, need to get a defender in actually to avoid playing Clyne or Fabio this week, but was gonna get Baines, am I better off with Boyce? Shirely not?

Nope. Third rule of Fantasy Football... If you can go Baines in defence, go Baines in defence.

Now that Mark Bunn has gone to Norwich is he going to be 1st choice or will it still be Ruddy

If Hughton dropped Ruddy I reckon it would turn the mustard. No chance he'll risk the local economy.

What about Figueroa? Is Boyce more of an attacking threat??

    Also:

    Vertonghen or Vermaelen??
Which do you think will score more goals? …Keep more clean sheets? Verm is proven in the EPL, will Verts even start every game (he is cheaper though)?

Only one Wigan defensive option worth having imo and that's Al Habsi, class keeper, makes loads of saves and usually a few penalties too.

So i wasn't wrong about Berba to Fiorentina as such, Juve just decided to offer him more. Fed up of buying referees, Juve have resorted to the old fashioned way of just buying players instead

I am keeping. Unless Chelsea buy a striker in the next 48 hours Torres is likely to stay for the whole season, he actually does look like he's finding some form, and when Chelsea learn to play to his style rather than Drogba's he will get better I feel.

As for the -4, it really depends on what your transfer you made, I'm assuming you sold Mata? I'd be more inclined to sell Ivan, but United coverage in attack for the next 2 games could be vital, so unless you sold Mata for Kagawa I'd do it.

Sold mata to Hba...in hindsight should have bought kags but needed funds to get hazard next gw!

Its a tough one...btw your rank is decent so far...captaining tevez/rvp? whos your utd coverage?
