A change in formation during the latter part of Wigan’s 2011-12 season transformed the fortunes of right-back and occasional centre-half Emmerson Boyce. Shifted out of defence and handed a role on the right of the Latics’ midfield, Boyce and fellow wide man Jean Beausejour patrolled the flanks magnificently to help secure Wigan’s Premier League safety over the final few months of the previous campaign.

Bearing in mind his side registered seven wins in their final nine matches last time round, it’s no surprise to see Roberto Martinez stick with this ploy. Having recovered from their opening day defeat to Chelsea, the Latics bounced back with a win and clean sheet at St Mary’s last weekend and, with a strong run of fixtures on the horizon, Boyce has climbed his way up our Watchlist rankings.

Priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, the Latics man – who is classified as a defender in both games – offers us an intriguing mid-price alternative over the next few Gameweeks and, as Martinez’s men square up to a kind run of opponents (STO, mun, FUL, sun, EVE, swa), Boyce has the potential for points at both ends of the pitch. Granted, the Gameweek 4 clash with United stands out in this short term fixture list but, as Wigan’s 1-0 home win over the Red Devils last season showed, it will not be an encounter that is likely to intimidate Martinez.

In his six years at the club, Boyce has only scored seven goals for Wigan but, with three of those goals arriving during last season’s formation shift, savvy managers will have spotted his strong potential for points over the coming campaign. The last fixture of 2011/12 saw him bag a brace against Wolves, including a spectacular volley, highlighting the attacking capabilities of the former Barbados international.

Already this season we have seen how integral Boyce’s delivery from the flank is to Wigan’s game plan. His well worked cross, that ultimately Manuel Figueroa failed to convert, proved to be the Latics’ best attempt on goal during the first half of their 2-0 victory over Southampton. While he’s yet to pick up an assist, Boyce has done enough to suggest he could well be on the cusp of attacking returns as Martinez looks to build on their Gameweek 2 triumph and avoid the customary battle to beat the drop.

He has been for 2 of the 3 games but I don't see that continuing with Moses signing and Marin to come back which could lead to Mata playing on the left also.

    My current squad is:

    Al Habsi / Green
    Baines / Ivanovic / Saylor / Hangeland / Fox
    Michu / Toure / Pienaar / Noble / Dyer
    Jelavic / Torres / Tevez
    Bank: £3.5m

    In GW3 should I:
    1) sell Green (if so, for who)
    2) trade in Hangeland for Riise
    3) trade in Noble for Ben Arfa
    4) trade in Dyer for Ben Arfa

In GW4, all things being equal, I will probably bring in Hazard for Toure (although I may still give that passing bandwagon a miss.

    Any advice gratefully received. Ta.

Looking at upcoming fixtures I would go:

      Ba - Petric - Graham

I just cannot get on with Graham (I've tried but he doesn't return my calls). Swansea have scored 8 goals and he has scored points in just 1 of them.

Don't hold it against me but I'm a Derby fan. He was on loan at our place, admittedly some time ago, but he was poor. He had a good spell with Watford and then ends up at Swansea where, to be honest, I reckon I could have scored one goal as the sole striker in a team that have scored eight in two matches.

In short, and no disrespect to the guy, but I think he is a Championship quality footballer who got lucky.

I like Boyce a lot playing at wing-back. Its an interesting article that is food for thought. Had I not got Al Habsi I would probably look to bring him in. I have Saylor all ready...and Hangeland. I don't see Ridgewell and WBA doing that well long term and would probably go Chico and Rangel from Swansea.

5m is way too much for a Wigan defender, even out of position. At 4.5m I'd consider it, but probably still look elsewhere.

(repost) Please help I have a dilemma here…
Want to get Hazard in and get rid of Mata but will have to do it tonight to do so because of price rises. This would result in a -4 point hit, which I would usually be okay with but I’ve already taken a hit this week.
    Therefore should I :
    (A) Take another hit and do Mata to Hazard tonight
    (B) Wait until next week and do Bale to Hazard and keep Mata

Maybe Bale-->Hazard next week with .8 in the bank if Gareth fails to deliver.

    Thoughts appreciated!

+1 Definitely no need to WC. It should be used to turn a horrible squad into a good one or take advantage of a DGW.

Most of the rises have been and are happening now. Obviously what happens this GW will determine how much more crazy it will get but for the sake of making a little extra funds it's not worth it. Points before profit and a WC can be put to better use later on.

Bonkers idea: a hit for a GK.

It seems way beyond rational behaviour to even consider it, BUT after reading what Reinhoold said the other day, I've started to do just that.

I like my team, but I have 3 duds in my keepers (at least one of them) and Fabio. I have no intention of WCing soon. Next week, I intend to buy Hazard, the following week I intend to shift Fabio. By the time the week after comes around, there will be other form players to catch. That intended transfer for the goalkeeper I actually wanted, never materialises and I'm left with the same underwhelming pair. However, if I bite the bullet early, I can beat a price rise and actually get someone who long term should outscore my dud/s by at least 4.

Am I a seagull following a trawler or am I making sense?

A hit can be useful just so one isn't always a transfer behind. I think if it's a long term gk overhaul then it should make up the 4pts over time. So not that bad an idea in principle, even if it won't pay off in just a few weeks necessarily.

Makes perfect sense. There's a lot of BS spouted about not taking hits cos yiou won't make the points back, but sometimes they're necessary to keep your team ticking over.

I'm thinking along the same lines. After I bring Hazard in next week, the only changes I want to make are two defs and both GK's, so will prob do 1GK and 1 def each week over 2 weeks.

I'm looking at Jussi to Vorm for example. This week, that coud blow up in my face if WHM keep a cleanie and Sunderland score, but I'm thinking long term.

I don't want to get to the latter stages and think "if only I'd bit the bullet with my keepers".

Yes, I tried it, just for kicks. But honestly, it's not like I've gone for Ivanovic and Torres just because they've done well so far.

Baines has good fixtures coming up, as does Petric and the Swans defence. Hazard just looks class. I already have Pienaar & Michu and wouldn't lose either. And would stick with Bale for Spurs fixtures.

It honestly isn't just chasing last week's points.
