A change in formation during the latter part of Wigan’s 2011-12 season transformed the fortunes of right-back and occasional centre-half Emmerson Boyce. Shifted out of defence and handed a role on the right of the Latics’ midfield, Boyce and fellow wide man Jean Beausejour patrolled the flanks magnificently to help secure Wigan’s Premier League safety over the final few months of the previous campaign.

Bearing in mind his side registered seven wins in their final nine matches last time round, it’s no surprise to see Roberto Martinez stick with this ploy. Having recovered from their opening day defeat to Chelsea, the Latics bounced back with a win and clean sheet at St Mary’s last weekend and, with a strong run of fixtures on the horizon, Boyce has climbed his way up our Watchlist rankings.

Priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, the Latics man – who is classified as a defender in both games – offers us an intriguing mid-price alternative over the next few Gameweeks and, as Martinez’s men square up to a kind run of opponents (STO, mun, FUL, sun, EVE, swa), Boyce has the potential for points at both ends of the pitch. Granted, the Gameweek 4 clash with United stands out in this short term fixture list but, as Wigan’s 1-0 home win over the Red Devils last season showed, it will not be an encounter that is likely to intimidate Martinez.

In his six years at the club, Boyce has only scored seven goals for Wigan but, with three of those goals arriving during last season’s formation shift, savvy managers will have spotted his strong potential for points over the coming campaign. The last fixture of 2011/12 saw him bag a brace against Wolves, including a spectacular volley, highlighting the attacking capabilities of the former Barbados international.

Already this season we have seen how integral Boyce’s delivery from the flank is to Wigan’s game plan. His well worked cross, that ultimately Manuel Figueroa failed to convert, proved to be the Latics’ best attempt on goal during the first half of their 2-0 victory over Southampton. While he’s yet to pick up an assist, Boyce has done enough to suggest he could well be on the cusp of attacking returns as Martinez looks to build on their Gameweek 2 triumph and avoid the customary battle to beat the drop.

Last season Baines got approx 4 points per 90 mins, Jags got about 3.7. On those stats, you'd be looking at an extra 13 points(ish) for your money over the course of 38 games.

But then last season was low-scoring by Baines' standards.

Suarez is just tough to fit in to a forward line, you're going to have to drop one of RVP or Tevez to get him in, and the other options from those teams aren't necessarily as appealing.

(Not to mention questions of coverage. I don't think you can realistically have an attack that has all of Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, *and* Liverpool to boot unless you start taking second tier options from those teams somewhere.)

2 games and already they've passed pretty well. I expect that number to rise to about 92% over the course of the season. I find Suarez a frustrating FPL propsect tbh, Assaidi is on my watchlist as is Sterling.

After hours of speculation and sitting on the fence, here is my team:
    ddg
    hangeland kaboul cole (clyne gorkss)
    nasri michu kagawa tarabt ramires
    tevez podolski (torres)

Have 1FT but thinking of doing 2 so i can free up some cash to do nasri to hazard in gw4. So doing:
    ramires + cole >>> fellani + williams.

    All good?

could also do to baines + noble but not sure about that.

it's not based on that. It's based on something called co-efficients. This also factors in previous European performance and the ranking of the club. Last season City were in Pot 4 as they had no pedigree, however they beat Bayern at home and Villarreal at home and made the QFs of the EUROPA, as well as winning the title, pushing them into Pot 2. Had United won the title they'd be in Pot 3.

It's also because clubs such as Liverpool, Tottenham Inter and Athletico, who would have been ranked higher, failed to make it.

I never feel comfortable backing Wigan to be honest - see Boselli, Moses - but, for a team with budget players in all areas - Boyce, Maloney, Kone - they have started the season well (see Chelsea performance not result) and have Stoke and Fulham at home in the next three which I do think they can and will win.

Depends on Valencia. Really interested to see if Ferguson goes with Rafael this weekend. If he does, I'd say his stock increases considerably. Ferguson rarely plays Rafael with Nani so as long as Valencia is nailed for right-wing (which you'd think would be the case), then Rafael should be settled. Jones' return will change matters of course.

He was really good until the Stoke game at Britannia. In that game he was awful. From there on he was fairly average. At that point Sandro was injured. Sandro got some immense technical abilities when it comes tackling. His range is insanse. His physics the same. I can't see any abilities where Parker is better than Sandro. Maybe slightly better at passing, and his work ethics is special. As a leader he might give more than Sandro, but not as a player.

I could do a better job than Andre. Just let those guys play. They are all class. Ade red card is coming I can feel it. No chance he is capable of doing high defensive line. Its Ade for Christ Sake

I want to see you watch him coach his team before you judge him. Redknapp never showed up on the training ground. AVB is there 24/7. He is extremely talented.
