A change in formation during the latter part of Wigan’s 2011-12 season transformed the fortunes of right-back and occasional centre-half Emmerson Boyce. Shifted out of defence and handed a role on the right of the Latics’ midfield, Boyce and fellow wide man Jean Beausejour patrolled the flanks magnificently to help secure Wigan’s Premier League safety over the final few months of the previous campaign.

Bearing in mind his side registered seven wins in their final nine matches last time round, it’s no surprise to see Roberto Martinez stick with this ploy. Having recovered from their opening day defeat to Chelsea, the Latics bounced back with a win and clean sheet at St Mary’s last weekend and, with a strong run of fixtures on the horizon, Boyce has climbed his way up our Watchlist rankings.

Priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, the Latics man – who is classified as a defender in both games – offers us an intriguing mid-price alternative over the next few Gameweeks and, as Martinez’s men square up to a kind run of opponents (STO, mun, FUL, sun, EVE, swa), Boyce has the potential for points at both ends of the pitch. Granted, the Gameweek 4 clash with United stands out in this short term fixture list but, as Wigan’s 1-0 home win over the Red Devils last season showed, it will not be an encounter that is likely to intimidate Martinez.

In his six years at the club, Boyce has only scored seven goals for Wigan but, with three of those goals arriving during last season’s formation shift, savvy managers will have spotted his strong potential for points over the coming campaign. The last fixture of 2011/12 saw him bag a brace against Wolves, including a spectacular volley, highlighting the attacking capabilities of the former Barbados international.

Already this season we have seen how integral Boyce’s delivery from the flank is to Wigan’s game plan. His well worked cross, that ultimately Manuel Figueroa failed to convert, proved to be the Latics’ best attempt on goal during the first half of their 2-0 victory over Southampton. While he’s yet to pick up an assist, Boyce has done enough to suggest he could well be on the cusp of attacking returns as Martinez looks to build on their Gameweek 2 triumph and avoid the customary battle to beat the drop.

    Captain issue ,tevez vs rvp ,its quite possible people are looking at fixtures and that utd look to have made a slowish start,its my opinion that against utd everton and fulham played right at thr top of their games,whilst tevez at home to qpr is enticing ,can you imagine last season not captaining rvp for utd vs crappy southampton,no brainer for me,rvp all day long,,,,

    Tevez to rise to 9.6m tonight. It's perhaps less relevant for me as I got Tevez in for 9.0 and I only make 1/2 profit on any rises, but if Tevez rises much more and Aguero drops keep happening then there could be as little as 1.0m between them by the time Aguero is fit again.

    Tevez was the bargain of the season with a 2.5m difference, but if Aguero comes back only 1.0m more then that's definitely something to think about.

    Other random thoughts about this that swing it one way or another;
    - After Tevez's last Champions League campaign would it be so surprising to see him mostly as a PL starter while the other strikers rotate for the CL? Doubly so given his (relative) PL experience.
    - Silva is also dropping, and I might have more faith in him than either Aguero or Tevez. Makes an interesting proposition at

        Yeah if you got the full-rise it's a closer decision.

        There's still a lot to think about even if you've had Tevez from 9.0 though. I know some people were considering doubling up on Aguero/Tevez pre-season, and that ought to be even more enticing at 11.0m or whatever Aguero ends up at.

        Two city strikers for 20m total, and meanwhile I'm paying 13.0m for RVP... hard to ignore.

        Like I said, there's still a lot of questions when the CL comes around and about how quickly Aguero will regain his form and fitness, but certainly a lot to think about.

    I loosely plan on making the following tansfes over the next few weeks:

    Graham, Torres --> Ba, Adebayor

    Bale, Yaya --> Hazard, Kagawa

    Ivanovic --> Baines

    Stating next week, my current pecking order of importance is Hazard, Kagawa, Ba, Ade, Baines.

    I could get Torres out for Ba or Ade this week, and still get Hazard next week, but i don't want to as I'm not 100% about Ba or Ade. Am I being too cautious?

    If Ade and Andre show us some form I am seriously considering getting him for Persie after GW 5.

    Persie fixtures: liv TOT new STO che ARS
    Ade fixtures: QPR mun AVL CHE sot WIG

    He can surely match him in points if not out score him. Also beside the STO game I don't see where he could be a captain and in that way influence too much what the rivals and RVP owners will do. The difference in cash is almost 4m. That difference could kill in the other areas. The key is what that shit of a manager Andre manages. But with them conceding I believe there is space for Ade attacking returns.

    Thoughts?

      1. Failed to win either of the opening fixtures.
      2. Made a pigs ear of it with Chelsea.
      3. Not getting the best out of his Spurs players.
      4. Being prepared to sell VDV, Dawson, Parker, Lennon and so on.
      5. Had the audacity to say Spurs have made a better start to the season than last, when it's clear that they had vastly more difficult fixtures against 'the Manchesters'.

        Sorry but I have to call you out on number 2: a few players refused to cooperate with him, my theory is that the more senior members of the team didn't like the idea of someone their own age bossing them around. Thus the bad atmosphere and lack of morale.

        1. He didn't have a good option at central midfield. He lacked a striker that can be involved in the game.
        2. Because the players refused to act properly. His stats at Chelsea was quite decent until the players suddently started acting like children. It didn't work out better in the league with RDM.
        3. In 2 games?
        4. Mostly rumours. Who wouldn't accept a 10m bid for Dawson? Also he doesn't handle so much of the transfers.
        5. Last season they took 2 points in the same fixtures as this season.

    ROB GREEN YOU UNADULTERATED SWINE!!!

    I never liked you. Against my better judgement I gave you a chance. YOU LET ME DOWN.

    Also have Al Habsi, whose fixtures with Green fitted like a warm glove. Do I:

    a) Ride out Wigan's rough fixtures (Man U away in GW4, Spurs away in GW10, Liverpool away in GW12) and save £0.5m by bringing in a second choice keeper
    b) Bring in another match (Schwarzer is the best fit) and spend the extra £0.5m
    c) Save my transfer for next gameweek and bin Green (who will know doubt lose value) at some point in the future

    To clarify, though, ROB GREEN I REALLY DISLIKE YOU QUITE A LOT.

      frankly it is clueless knee-jerk idiot mark hughes who you should be miffed with.
      if he was up to it as a coach anton fabio onuoha gabbidon clint hill diakite robbie green et al are all good enough to stay up and be a "reasonable" defence.
      hughes purchasing policy is all over the place (nelsen - WTF?). The hoops would have been better off sticking with warnock. And don't get me started on the structure of his mid-field and forward line.
      I watch a lot of QPR.

        I don't disagree but I still have flashbacks to The Devonshire Arms, Sheffield...12th June 2010...Clint Dempsey's tame shot squirming under Rob Green. Mark Hughes seems to have a lexicon of over 30, over-rated defenders on massive wages which he is gradually working his way through. I thought QPR would do well this season (hence Rob Green) but I'm starting to question that.

        Adel Taarabt is a case in point. He looks good, certainly from a FFL perspective. PLAY HIM HUGHES!

    Thanks for the great responses re a GK hit. I knew a sane person was fighting to come out!

    My next question is: who to buy?

    I'm looking at the 5-5.5 range.

    Foster Mignolet looks great but I'd be doubling on both and would miss out on Swansea or Newcastle cover.

    Vorm Begovic is appealing and then buy Staylor as my every week defender.

    I like the 5 options but I already have cover of them in defence...
