Our refresh of the Watchlist rankings, giving our view on player picks for the next month or so, is now available in your right sidebar. This week’s update finds Chelsea returning to the radar, while the form of West Brom and Everton also see climbs for their key assets across the positions…

Goalkeepers

Michel Vorm holds his top rank, amidst upheaval in the Swansea back four following the injury to Neil Taylor and a three-match ban for Chico, which will see him miss two league encounters. The Swans keeper is being pushed all the way by West Brom’s Ben Foster, however, after a second clean sheet against Everton boosted his stock; with fixtures falling in his favour, he presents a very strong keeper option if you’re not already looking to Steve Clarke’s defenders.

Jussi Jaaskalainen is again the budget option to consider below these two, having sealed a second home clean sheet in the win over Fulham. Wojciech Szczeseny is a consideration after returning from injury – his fixtures are stiff but, with a newly disciplined back four in front of him, he looks a good option – his stock slightly tempered by concern that he may not reclaim his start from Vito Mannone.

Defenders

Leighton Baines climbs to the top of our rankings here, despite the 2-0 setback at the Hawthorns. The fixture list suggests that Everton will be in profit at both ends of the field in the next two months and Baines looks by far the strongest option if you’re spending big in defence. His ascent is helped by City and United’s current inability to claim clean sheets, reducing the value of other options in Baines’ bracket.

Swansea’s Angel Rangel is toppled, then, but holds in second spot with the continued promise of returns from a kind fixture list. Team-mate Ben Davies was a consideration to oust Rangel as the Swansea option here, given that the young left-back looks nailed-on, at least in the short-term. Davies is available for a budget price and will surely start at Villa next time out, although Michael Laudrup has stated he is searching for backup which could threaten Davies’ start. We’re reserving judgement on this, keeping the more expensive Rangel in our Watchlist rankings.

West Brom’s Gareth McAuley is our pick of the West Brom defenders – while we’ve previously favoured team-mate Liam Ridgewell for his greater assist potential, his left-back position is now under threat from new signing Goran Popov – that’s a concern. McAuley, in contrast, looks nailed on and has shown greater goal threat in the opening three matches.

Thomas Vermaelen is another heavy-hitting defender who has enjoyed a stock increase. Three clean sheets have provided handsome returns, although with Carl Jenkinson available as an option, interest in the Gunners skipper has been tempered. With Bacary Sagna nearing a return, however, Jenkinson’s start will soon come under pressure. That will either have us turn to Kieran Gibbs or, if you have the funds, the goalscoring threat of Vermaelen.

Guy Demel is the top budget option in the rankings; we’re still waiting confirmation on the extent of the injury sustained against Fulham but, for now, we’re monitoring this as a minor knock. If fit, Demel looks real value having seemingly cemented the right-back role for the Hammers.

Midfielders

Eden Hazard returns to action and, not surprisingly, claims top spot in our midfielder rankings. With Swansea’ goal threat Michu remaining in second spot, these two will surely find place in many a Fantasy squad in the next few weeks if they’ve yet to secure their spots. It’s very hard to look beyond either, given their respective form and fixtures.

Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla has emerged as a real rival for our affections, however and, despite a testing short-term fixture list, there’s clearly merits in recruiting early – prior to improved fixtures and, potentially, returns.

Everton’s kind forthcoming run is reflected in Steven Pienaar’s climb up our rankings. For my money, if you don’t have Baines or Nikica Jelavic in your squad, then Pienaar becomes essential cover of Everton’s strong form. We’ve opted for the South African over Maroane Fellaini with the suspicion that the Belgian will, eventually, be moved back to a midfield role following the recent impact of striker ‪Kevin Miralles. There’s a slight injury doubt over Pienaar, so investment should, perhaps, be delayed until we know more on his calf problem next week.

James Morrison is another player to benefit from form and fixtures and he’s perhaps an unlikely name in our rankings, particularly when you consider that we have him above the likes of Kevin Nolan, Gareth Bale and Hatem Ben Arfa. While Morrison’s returns have been under the radar so far, we see him as the prime asset to consider over the Baggies’ kind run of opponents in the coming weeks. With just over 1% ownership, he could be a very efficient differential for those worried about forming a template squad.

Forwards

It’s going to take injury or a minor miracle for our top two to be displaced for the forseeable future. While Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez have swapped places in our table, they are surely set to remain one and two for a good few Gameweeks, given their current form.

Everton’s Nikaca Jelavic is now our third striker option of choice. Again, if you can’t cover Everton with Baines or Pienaar, Jelavic looks to be the route to explore. We’re targeting the next ten games as a very positive spell for the Croatian goalscorer.

Southamptons’ Rickie Lambert is now a clear front runner in the budget bracket, although both Swansea’s Danny Graham and Reading’s Pavel Pogrebnyak offer strong alternative options here.

Dimitar Berbatov makes an appearance in our thinking and certainly has the fixtures to flourish. The Bulgarian’s bandwagon could well pick up speed if he can prove his worth against West Brom in Gameweek 4. His engine is certainly running, with Fantasy managers deliberating whether to climb on board early.

Berbatov, along with West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie, are our differentials on show here. The Nigerian has yet to cement his role in Steve Clarke’s 4-3-3 formation but we’ve still opted for him over Shane Long – the Baggies frontline has plenty of competition and is far from secure, another factor which promotes Morrison in our thinking.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I don't think he is. He is too good to be dropped for now. Besides Popov can also play CB, so he may be just a cover for the two spots in case any one gets injured.

Popov can play on the left side of midfield as well. Macedonia play Scotland on September 10th. Popov should be playing in that game. He will push for a place in the team if he plays to his potential for the Baggies.

Still so very torn on Kagawa and Torres to Hazard and Van Persie. Still seems very silly to me to swap CHE to Man U and Man U to a CHE player. I can afford a 0.3 combined rise out of the both of them before I could no longer afford. It would be for a minus 8. Team is linked.

Same situation for me and I did the change, and used my wildcard in the process. Would have liked to stick and see it out as I deemed Kagawa and Torres decent enough but the fast price changes forced my hand.

Plus RVP. Remember last season? You either had him or you were left behind. And Hazard could be the Lampard we knew a few seasons ago, or a Fabregas or Ronaldo. I'd rather not chance it myself, and instead if they are garbage you have made yourself a few bob.

Saw a few of you discussing the Man United starting xi.

All changes aside, the single most positive change would be Evra>Buttner. Rafael is young and not nailed on so the RB slot does not count. Evra in my humble opinion is past it and despite Buttner being young and untested, i do not see a better chance to try him then vs. Wigan at home. Evra, simply put, is a liability.

I think the defence needs stability at the minute and that wont happen removing Evra. In a couple of weeks Vidic and Rio will be looking far more comfortable. Once that happens, it could be time to look at alternatives.

The unstable defense can't be too bad than Evra in a stable one. He just can't defend now. I think playing Buttner would help him realize that his spot is not safe now and he needs to do well to keep his place in the first team.
Although I don't know anything about Buttner either. He could be worse.

I reckon Buttner is more likely to get his chance to play at home vs Galatasary 3 or 4 days later, with Evra then being well rested for the Liverpool away game the follows that.

I don't know how good Buttner is, but as above once the united defence is a bit more stable Evra definitely needs a kick up his backside to let him know he's gotta up his game else he'll be out the door.

Jags is too expensive without penalties or free kicks or attacking potential. and Howard is too reliant on the other defenders.

of course, Howard might get the odd assist or two.....

You need to consider Baines as a midfielder. He is potentially a "must-have" with his CS potential in a decent Everton defence with good fixtures, on Pen's / Free kicks and corners.

you pretty certain Kagawa will start the next game Granny? His spot could be at risk from what I've seen... you could have lost him for Nolan and lumped the money on upgrading Ba. Better chance of making your -4 back too

Yeah considered that too. Too much nailbiting with Kagawa at home to Wigan though. Will he be dropped after one game, can't see it, united need his creativity.
I'm confident with Ba, he had 5 shots, 3 on target at the weekend. More involved than Cisse.

    Concerned I am going to miss the RVP bandwagon again this year as I did last - it ended up being the diff btwn me and league winner. WC played. Is it worth an 8 point hit this week to do this on my front 8;

    Current

    Kagawa Bale Michu Pienaar Yaya

    Torres Tevez Graham

    to

    Hazard Guthrie Michu Pienaar Yaya

    RVP Tevez Graham

In other words out Kawaga, Bale, Torres in Hazard, Guthrie, RVP.

Before his hattrick I was certain that RVP wouldn't be worth his price. Now I'm not so sure - maybe he will be, maybe he won't. I now think it's better to get him in while you can and maybe ditch him later if he flops than to risk not being able to afford him later if he goes cosmic. All about risk management.

Definitely time to get him in. His price is worth it because he is a captain option almost every week, which makes him worth much more. Tevez and RVP gives you a captain that will probably get you double digit scores every week until the end of the season bar injury. Makes life much easier.

Demel is a slight injury concern, but should be fit.

      Ivanovic

      Demel

      Hangeland

Yes, someone put it well on here today about Yaya "its only so long before the ball stops landing at his feet from a corner" ha.

            That was me (tm).

It's true. Yaya has 4 other attackers playing more advanced than him.

i would do it even though i have yaya. everything goes through cazorla for arsenal so if they score he is more likely to be involved.

wait for yayas price rise though as he is going to go up any day soon

Wow. That's almost as hardcore as Fantasy Europa League!

Have a look on Fifa's website maybe?

Tried it mate, no luck. Fantasy Europa League is so annoying, rotation etc!

I'll happily argue that it's the toughest fantasy game out there. I salute the person who wins that league.

I feel relieved to have used my wildcard, and I personally wish the game included no wildcards or at least just not the January one again. Ever wonder if they will add another one again to make the game even more noob friendly? (ala Call Of Duty series)

Just watched the MUN/SOT replay and there was nothing wrong with Kagawa other than he struggled to get the pill alot playing in the hole in a 4411 albeit he created two good open shots that were saved/just wide. When Scholes/Nani came on they reverted to 433 which gave them understandably more penetration opportunities.
