Our refresh of the Watchlist rankings, giving our view on player picks for the next month or so, is now available in your right sidebar. This week’s update finds Chelsea returning to the radar, while the form of West Brom and Everton also see climbs for their key assets across the positions…

Goalkeepers

Michel Vorm holds his top rank, amidst upheaval in the Swansea back four following the injury to Neil Taylor and a three-match ban for Chico, which will see him miss two league encounters. The Swans keeper is being pushed all the way by West Brom’s Ben Foster, however, after a second clean sheet against Everton boosted his stock; with fixtures falling in his favour, he presents a very strong keeper option if you’re not already looking to Steve Clarke’s defenders.

Jussi Jaaskalainen is again the budget option to consider below these two, having sealed a second home clean sheet in the win over Fulham. Wojciech Szczeseny is a consideration after returning from injury – his fixtures are stiff but, with a newly disciplined back four in front of him, he looks a good option – his stock slightly tempered by concern that he may not reclaim his start from Vito Mannone.

Defenders

Leighton Baines climbs to the top of our rankings here, despite the 2-0 setback at the Hawthorns. The fixture list suggests that Everton will be in profit at both ends of the field in the next two months and Baines looks by far the strongest option if you’re spending big in defence. His ascent is helped by City and United’s current inability to claim clean sheets, reducing the value of other options in Baines’ bracket.

Swansea’s Angel Rangel is toppled, then, but holds in second spot with the continued promise of returns from a kind fixture list. Team-mate Ben Davies was a consideration to oust Rangel as the Swansea option here, given that the young left-back looks nailed-on, at least in the short-term. Davies is available for a budget price and will surely start at Villa next time out, although Michael Laudrup has stated he is searching for backup which could threaten Davies’ start. We’re reserving judgement on this, keeping the more expensive Rangel in our Watchlist rankings.

West Brom’s Gareth McAuley is our pick of the West Brom defenders – while we’ve previously favoured team-mate Liam Ridgewell for his greater assist potential, his left-back position is now under threat from new signing Goran Popov – that’s a concern. McAuley, in contrast, looks nailed on and has shown greater goal threat in the opening three matches.

Thomas Vermaelen is another heavy-hitting defender who has enjoyed a stock increase. Three clean sheets have provided handsome returns, although with Carl Jenkinson available as an option, interest in the Gunners skipper has been tempered. With Bacary Sagna nearing a return, however, Jenkinson’s start will soon come under pressure. That will either have us turn to Kieran Gibbs or, if you have the funds, the goalscoring threat of Vermaelen.

Guy Demel is the top budget option in the rankings; we’re still waiting confirmation on the extent of the injury sustained against Fulham but, for now, we’re monitoring this as a minor knock. If fit, Demel looks real value having seemingly cemented the right-back role for the Hammers.

Midfielders

Eden Hazard returns to action and, not surprisingly, claims top spot in our midfielder rankings. With Swansea’ goal threat Michu remaining in second spot, these two will surely find place in many a Fantasy squad in the next few weeks if they’ve yet to secure their spots. It’s very hard to look beyond either, given their respective form and fixtures.

Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla has emerged as a real rival for our affections, however and, despite a testing short-term fixture list, there’s clearly merits in recruiting early – prior to improved fixtures and, potentially, returns.

Everton’s kind forthcoming run is reflected in Steven Pienaar’s climb up our rankings. For my money, if you don’t have Baines or Nikica Jelavic in your squad, then Pienaar becomes essential cover of Everton’s strong form. We’ve opted for the South African over Maroane Fellaini with the suspicion that the Belgian will, eventually, be moved back to a midfield role following the recent impact of striker ‪Kevin Miralles. There’s a slight injury doubt over Pienaar, so investment should, perhaps, be delayed until we know more on his calf problem next week.

James Morrison is another player to benefit from form and fixtures and he’s perhaps an unlikely name in our rankings, particularly when you consider that we have him above the likes of Kevin Nolan, Gareth Bale and Hatem Ben Arfa. While Morrison’s returns have been under the radar so far, we see him as the prime asset to consider over the Baggies’ kind run of opponents in the coming weeks. With just over 1% ownership, he could be a very efficient differential for those worried about forming a template squad.

Forwards

It’s going to take injury or a minor miracle for our top two to be displaced for the forseeable future. While Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez have swapped places in our table, they are surely set to remain one and two for a good few Gameweeks, given their current form.

Everton’s Nikaca Jelavic is now our third striker option of choice. Again, if you can’t cover Everton with Baines or Pienaar, Jelavic looks to be the route to explore. We’re targeting the next ten games as a very positive spell for the Croatian goalscorer.

Southamptons’ Rickie Lambert is now a clear front runner in the budget bracket, although both Swansea’s Danny Graham and Reading’s Pavel Pogrebnyak offer strong alternative options here.

Dimitar Berbatov makes an appearance in our thinking and certainly has the fixtures to flourish. The Bulgarian’s bandwagon could well pick up speed if he can prove his worth against West Brom in Gameweek 4. His engine is certainly running, with Fantasy managers deliberating whether to climb on board early.

Berbatov, along with West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie, are our differentials on show here. The Nigerian has yet to cement his role in Steve Clarke’s 4-3-3 formation but we’ve still opted for him over Shane Long – the Baggies frontline has plenty of competition and is far from secure, another factor which promotes Morrison in our thinking.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

One thing I feel like I’m missing out on being an outside the UK football fan is supporting the smaller Championship, League 1 and Conference Clubs. All you British folk must have a home town team that you support or a local club you root for.. I feel like the essence of football develops at that very level. A little sad that I don’t really know what that feels like.

I am thinking of the same front 8, mostly running a 3-5-2. That midfield is sooo tempting. IMO Begovic rotates better with Foster and that you might want Saylor instead of McAuley so you are not doubling up on defenders. I'd also prefer Cuellar over Hangeland...

Anyone else find themselves head scratching after a terrible start to the season? Not much has gone wrong other than:

    1) I didn't have Torres GW1/2
    2) I didn't have Ivanovic GW1
    3) I STILL haven't got Hazard and I now cannot afford a straight swap for Bale
    4) I captained Aguero GW1, he scored 1 point, got injured, and lost value
    5) I captained Rooney GW2, he scored 1 point, got injured, and lost value (see the pattern)
    6) I didn't take a hit or wildcard to get van-Persie in last week so missed out on his hattrick
    7) I don't own a West Brom/Arsenal/Swansea/West Ham defender. Basically I've got one clean sheet all season (Schwarzer GW1)

Just me then? I'll get my coat

Some years I have wildcarded after Gameweek 3..usually because my original selections have been so duff! This follows the slightly twisted logic that, having got things so badly wrong first time, I'll miraculously get it right with the wildcard!!! This season though, having luckily had Hazard, Cazorla, RVP and Tevez since the start, I'm resisting the temptation..although its very tempting as I'm on here everyday reading all the good advice!

I fully respect those who play the WC to make money..and those who need to play it to make ground..but I just feel 3 weeks isn't long enough to see how the Prem League season is going! And this one has started a bit strangely..no Man Utd or City cleansheets etc! Chances are, WCers are busy stocking up with WBA defenders, West Ham defenders, Arsenal defenders, Swansea attackers/midfielders etc. Quite right too as that's how the early trends are going. But just out of interest, I had a look back to this time last season..AFTER 3 GAMEWEEKS...

Wolves had 7 points on the board with 2 clean sheets! Wonder how many of us brought in a Wolves defender at this time last season! Hmmm. (they won only 3 more matches all season)

Arsenal had scored 0, 0 and then 2 (in the 8-2 defeat). On that form, you'd have got rid of RVP I imagine! (they ended up scoring 72 more goals that season, despite the shaky start)

Chelsea had 7 points and were being talked up as potential champions. As indeed they had been the year before. (they came 6th)

Bolton had already scored 7 goals. Wonder how many of us brought in Davies or Klasnic as a cheap 3rd striker. (Bolton only scored another 39 goals in the remaining 35 matches).

Swansea had failed to score a goal. (They ended up with 44)

Wigan had already kept 2 clean sheets (they only kept another 6 all season)

Of course there were lots of reliable trends after 3 games last season too..Man City being the top scorers, United deadly in front of goal too etc...

but my point is, if you're wildcarding, beware false trends! Good Luck 🙂

Ihave wildcarded bt only because of statistics, they never lie if I had not I would still be stuck with the likes of Bale, Sigurdsson and Bale while I needed Hazard and van Persie, if you have two defenders, three midfielders, and two strikers with good stats it does not matter that you used the WC early

Despite the presence of Popov, Ridgewell. Has been a Premiership stalwart for three years, good value, good figures, and a very good manager in the making. Plus, he is and old favourite of mine ...

I want to know too. Probably look at one more match. If Ridgewell is still nailed on, then bring him with no doubt.

How come Fletcher is not on the Watchlist, but Berba is? His fixtures are fine, he's more in form than Berbatov, his team and service is better than Fulham, yes Fletcher is meeting Liverpool but...you know....with all do respect, they are embarresing at the moment.

If I were to use my wildcard this gameweek, I would certainly be bringing in Fletcher. He has the potential to be the season's bargain.

Hello! Help! Appreciate your thoughts as concerned with Arsenal defs who may be losing starting places. Too much in mid and attack?

    Jaask, Federici

    Mertesacker, Jenkinson, Rangel, Demel, Cueller,

    Hazard, Dyer, Santi, Michu, Guthrie

    Teves, Torres, RVP

    Thanks!

Could someone please explain to me very simply, how it is that one goes about predicting price rises. I'm aware it's to do with ownership/transfers in, but what allows people to confidently predict exact price changes?

i would get Mcauley instead of gibbs, Arsenal have some hard fixtures!

and maybe lambert instead of cisse

apart from that pretty solid.. no Hazard though?!

excellent team! I might change Fellaini for Pienaar and save a few hundred thousand...think its a .3/.4m difference. Then again, the rest of your team is exceptional and in no need of upgrading, so no need to spend that elsewhere.

I would however consider dropping ivanovic. Baines and Ivanovic seems like too much an investment, but like already said you dont need to improve elsewhere. No United coverage though? No Rvp???

If you are wildcarding SURELY you have to get RVP in somehow. It's clear there will be weeks where he explodes and people will shoot ahead of you for it.

      Petric? Meh. Berbatov mate.

I would actually get berbatov in if you aren't getting RVP. I dont rate Santi's fixtures in the long run, so I would do Santi and Ivanovic and Petric, for RVP a 4.5m defender, 5m at most, and a mid range midfielder i.e Morrisson, Nolan, Sterling.
