Our refresh of the Watchlist rankings, giving our view on player picks for the next month or so, is now available in your right sidebar. This week’s update finds Chelsea returning to the radar, while the form of West Brom and Everton also see climbs for their key assets across the positions…

Goalkeepers

Michel Vorm holds his top rank, amidst upheaval in the Swansea back four following the injury to Neil Taylor and a three-match ban for Chico, which will see him miss two league encounters. The Swans keeper is being pushed all the way by West Brom’s Ben Foster, however, after a second clean sheet against Everton boosted his stock; with fixtures falling in his favour, he presents a very strong keeper option if you’re not already looking to Steve Clarke’s defenders.

Jussi Jaaskalainen is again the budget option to consider below these two, having sealed a second home clean sheet in the win over Fulham. Wojciech Szczeseny is a consideration after returning from injury – his fixtures are stiff but, with a newly disciplined back four in front of him, he looks a good option – his stock slightly tempered by concern that he may not reclaim his start from Vito Mannone.

Defenders

Leighton Baines climbs to the top of our rankings here, despite the 2-0 setback at the Hawthorns. The fixture list suggests that Everton will be in profit at both ends of the field in the next two months and Baines looks by far the strongest option if you’re spending big in defence. His ascent is helped by City and United’s current inability to claim clean sheets, reducing the value of other options in Baines’ bracket.

Swansea’s Angel Rangel is toppled, then, but holds in second spot with the continued promise of returns from a kind fixture list. Team-mate Ben Davies was a consideration to oust Rangel as the Swansea option here, given that the young left-back looks nailed-on, at least in the short-term. Davies is available for a budget price and will surely start at Villa next time out, although Michael Laudrup has stated he is searching for backup which could threaten Davies’ start. We’re reserving judgement on this, keeping the more expensive Rangel in our Watchlist rankings.

West Brom’s Gareth McAuley is our pick of the West Brom defenders – while we’ve previously favoured team-mate Liam Ridgewell for his greater assist potential, his left-back position is now under threat from new signing Goran Popov – that’s a concern. McAuley, in contrast, looks nailed on and has shown greater goal threat in the opening three matches.

Thomas Vermaelen is another heavy-hitting defender who has enjoyed a stock increase. Three clean sheets have provided handsome returns, although with Carl Jenkinson available as an option, interest in the Gunners skipper has been tempered. With Bacary Sagna nearing a return, however, Jenkinson’s start will soon come under pressure. That will either have us turn to Kieran Gibbs or, if you have the funds, the goalscoring threat of Vermaelen.

Guy Demel is the top budget option in the rankings; we’re still waiting confirmation on the extent of the injury sustained against Fulham but, for now, we’re monitoring this as a minor knock. If fit, Demel looks real value having seemingly cemented the right-back role for the Hammers.

Midfielders

Eden Hazard returns to action and, not surprisingly, claims top spot in our midfielder rankings. With Swansea’ goal threat Michu remaining in second spot, these two will surely find place in many a Fantasy squad in the next few weeks if they’ve yet to secure their spots. It’s very hard to look beyond either, given their respective form and fixtures.

Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla has emerged as a real rival for our affections, however and, despite a testing short-term fixture list, there’s clearly merits in recruiting early – prior to improved fixtures and, potentially, returns.

Everton’s kind forthcoming run is reflected in Steven Pienaar’s climb up our rankings. For my money, if you don’t have Baines or Nikica Jelavic in your squad, then Pienaar becomes essential cover of Everton’s strong form. We’ve opted for the South African over Maroane Fellaini with the suspicion that the Belgian will, eventually, be moved back to a midfield role following the recent impact of striker ‪Kevin Miralles. There’s a slight injury doubt over Pienaar, so investment should, perhaps, be delayed until we know more on his calf problem next week.

James Morrison is another player to benefit from form and fixtures and he’s perhaps an unlikely name in our rankings, particularly when you consider that we have him above the likes of Kevin Nolan, Gareth Bale and Hatem Ben Arfa. While Morrison’s returns have been under the radar so far, we see him as the prime asset to consider over the Baggies’ kind run of opponents in the coming weeks. With just over 1% ownership, he could be a very efficient differential for those worried about forming a template squad.

Forwards

It’s going to take injury or a minor miracle for our top two to be displaced for the forseeable future. While Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez have swapped places in our table, they are surely set to remain one and two for a good few Gameweeks, given their current form.

Everton’s Nikaca Jelavic is now our third striker option of choice. Again, if you can’t cover Everton with Baines or Pienaar, Jelavic looks to be the route to explore. We’re targeting the next ten games as a very positive spell for the Croatian goalscorer.

Southamptons’ Rickie Lambert is now a clear front runner in the budget bracket, although both Swansea’s Danny Graham and Reading’s Pavel Pogrebnyak offer strong alternative options here.

Dimitar Berbatov makes an appearance in our thinking and certainly has the fixtures to flourish. The Bulgarian’s bandwagon could well pick up speed if he can prove his worth against West Brom in Gameweek 4. His engine is certainly running, with Fantasy managers deliberating whether to climb on board early.

Berbatov, along with West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie, are our differentials on show here. The Nigerian has yet to cement his role in Steve Clarke’s 4-3-3 formation but we’ve still opted for him over Shane Long – the Baggies frontline has plenty of competition and is far from secure, another factor which promotes Morrison in our thinking.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If you have no other priorities I would get rid soon. He will only frustrate you with rotation.

If you have more pressing needs, play him and hope for the best.

Ok, I gave in, played the WC. Came up with this.

    Howard (Jaask)
    Saylor Mertersacker Rangel (Demel, Clyne)
    Hazard Cazorla Michu Nolan Pienaar
    RVP Tevez Berba

Any changes? Considering whether Fletcher or Berba is the way to go...

I'm personally not convinced that Berba will be the best option (sacrilege around these parts, I know). I think there are better options (Fletcher) but I could easily be proved wrong. I wouldn't have Mertesacker, he'll be out once Koscielny is fully fit.

Thoughts on Lukaku? Was looking at bringing him in for GW5 and getting Ramirez, but am now drawn instead to Lambert and Morrison (which also happens to be cheaper). S, who would you get, JM or RL?

Not necessarily. After this GW, Southampton have the 8 Week run of any team in the Premier League.

The ticker shows the difficulty looking something like this from GW5-GW12
        1) Southampton
        2) Everton
        3) Reading (without even building in a possible DGW)
        4) Newcastle
        5) WBA

I was surprised when I looked at that yesterday, Cazorla is a fantastic option as long as Arsenal's finishing doesn't let them down, but they've got some very tough upcoming fixtures. In 3 weeks or so, he'll possibly be the best midfield option in the league.

Looking like the dream mid duo. I'm a Spurs fan but even I must be impressed by the way Cazorla's been plopped into the team and within 5 mins he's running the show... really running everything. He's the man I'll be very tempted to turn to in 2-3 GWs when the Gooners break beyond some of these v.tough fixs.

Problem is that the stats don't help get points if the striker is a dud. Compare Torres to Giroud using the compare tool. I still think long term Carzola is the better choice (if you have to choose, and you don't) because he takes all the corners and set pieces.

Glad people feel the same. Have been seeing how I can get Hazard in my team with RVP, Tevez and Torres up front but now Bale to Cazorla seems a better option than downgrading Jag to a cheaper defender and Bale to Hazard and a 4 point hit.

I agree that the price changes are making the game much more difficult and frantic, one good or bad game and players are shifting at a ridiculous rate.

I was thinking so. It's hard to be patient. I suppose with injuries to Aguero and Rooney, along with lack of cleanies among the title contenders things have heated up alot and people are panicing.

I agree. When transfers/wildcards are being used primarily to make cash (to such a high degree as this season so far) then I think there is something a bit wrong.

This season's start are exceptional circumstances, however. RvP wouldn't have raced away had Rooney not got crocked, but he did and it made RvP significantly hotter. Excatly the same goes for Tevez, whose rise may have been only half as much with not Kun injury.

Michu and Hazard are the only other real price racers, but their respective form would seem to justify that. Let's see what happens to their prices when they're not scaoring/double-assisting every game.

    Jussi/Friedel (Risk of being dropped)

Clyne Gorrks Simpson (Inj) Zabs (Gonna be dropped) Tomkins (Non starter)

    Hazard Dyer Kaka Michu Kagawa

    RVP Tevez Podolski

I have my w/c and 1.1m in the bank.

Obviously my defenders are an absolute shambles but..

Should I play the w/c or should I sort it out gradually over the next few gw's? Will my attack be ok over the next few gws while I try to sort out the mess at the back?

With cleanies at a premium, I'm trying to convince myself otherwise! My ML rival played his last week and got less points.. I could take a hit and have three playing def this week. I wish I didn't have a choice!

I wouldn't WC, it can be sorted over a couple of weeks, maybe with a couple of hits. Your front 8 (maybe bar Kaca) is very good, and you have money to upgrade the defence.

2 week International break is a good opportunity to load up on potential price rises and try and make some profit. I would rather play it when I think I can maximise points though. Kept mine until March last season.

I always have played my WC early. Has worked for me. Even more important in the last two years because of the team value you can build up. Using it to unload DGW players is overrated.

Had Yaya Toure from start. Currently 8.1m, my question is will he rise by another 0.3m before Ben Arfa rises by just 0.1m this week? As then I would make 0.2m on Yaya.

(Already have Tevez and want to spread my Attack accross more teams).

So you would rather do Yaya > HBA when you can make a little bit extra for him? I can't see a 0.3m rise for Yaya before HBA goes up at all tbh.

Well I suppose I can at least make 0.1m on Yaya then. I would rather have Ben Arfa. Yaya currently is close to a price rise, Ben arfa is not, and transfers made today are currently twice as many for Yaya than Ben Arfa.

So you can afford to wait and see how the transfers in pan out over the next week. You not tempted to keep Yaya? Scored a nice goal at Stoke last season so could be more of the same.

Of course I'm tempted but I think Ben Arfa is equally as good if not more attacking, and I'm considering spreading my attacking options accross different teams instead of doubling up.

You make you're own luck. He continually gets in the box and in the right areas when it matters and profits from it. You are probably at the wind up as usual but he is a quality player who will score points. And anyway who doesn't want a 'lucky' player if that is the case? Are those unlucky players like Bale who end up with sweet FA much more fun to have?

It takes fewer transfers out (10% of ownership if player's price has not risen I think) to drop 0.1 than to rise by 0.1 which has a 30-35K threshold.
