Tony Pulis added to Stoke’s midfield options last week with the deadline day signing of Charlie Adam from Liverpool on a four-year deal. The 26-year-old moves to the Britannia for an undisclosed fee just one season after joining the Merseysiders and was handed his debut at Wigan the following day, climbing off the subs bench for the injured Andy Wilkinson:

Adam became The Potters’ fifth acquisition of the summer, following the likes of Maurice Edu, Jamie Ness, Michael Kightly and Geoff Cameron to the club and his new manager revealed he has high expectations for the playmaker:

It’s no secret that we’ve been looking to bring more goals to the squad and Charlie is a fantastic signing in that respect. Not only will his creativity and his eye for delivering a pass be a great asset to us, he scored twelve goals for Blackpool in the Premier League two seasons ago. In fact, he scored 28 League goals for Blackpool over two seasons which is a fantastic return for a midfield player. We are looking for more goals from all areas of the team and his arrival gives us more competition for places in that department.

The Statistics

Adam’s career began in the youth ranks at Dundee before joining Glasgow Rangers on his fifteenth birthday. His time at the Ibrox club proved frustrating, though; the midfielder was unable to break into the first-team and made just four league appearances in his first three seasons, with loan spells at Ross County and St Mirren providing him with game time instead.

The 2006-07 season was Adam’s only campaign as a regular for Rangers – a total of 11 goals from 32 appearances highlighted his capabilities but midway through the following term he was packed off to Blackpool on loan. Having scored twice in 13 games for the Seasiders, Adam was snapped up on a two-year deal by Ian Holloway in August 2009 and, with spot-kicks and set-piece duties under his belt, helped lead the club from the Championship to the Premier League with 16 goals and nine assists in 43 matches.

Adam continued to prosper in the top-flight – his cut-price appeal across the Fantasy games earned significant investment, with 35 appearances harvesting 12 goals and eight assists in spite of his club’s subsequent relegation. A move to Liverpool last term saw his Fantasy price rise substantially and, with no penalty duties to fall back on, he scored just twice in 28 matches, with 11 FPL assists also accrued. Adam has also featured 12 times for his national side, scoring on one occasion.

The Prospects

The move certainly looks to hand Adam the opportunity of a regular role under Pulis. The installation of Brendan Rodgers to the Anfield hot seat was always likely to see him edged towards the exit door – Adam’s sometimes wayward distribution was completely at odds with the Irishman’s style of play and, with Joe Allen, Lucas and Nuri Sahin all ahead of him in the pecking order, it’s little surprise he has moved on.

While Stoke’s rigid 4-4-2 formation won’t afford him the same sort of leeway as the 4-3-3 at Blackpool, Adam’s style looks the perfect fit for Pulis’ side. With Peter Crouch to aim for up front, the midfielder’s distribution from deep could be a key weapon for the Potters this term, as Pulis looks to address a record that saw his side score a mere 36 goals last season – the lowest of any side in the Premier League.

Ideally, Pulis will partner Adam with an industrious ball-winner such as Glenn Whelan or Geoff Cameron in the centre of the park, allowing him a little more freedom to push on and spark his side’s attacks. He’s likely to be handed the majority set-pieces and corners and, with Crouch, Robert Huth and Ryan Shawcross all supplying a significant aerial threat, Adam could easily rack up a decent number of assists over the season. It’s worth noting, however, than Jon Walters maintained penalty duties when the new boy was on the pitch at Wigan last weekend, a factor that will surely diminish his overall potential.

Coming in at 6.8 in FPL, his initial classification as a Liverpool player means Adam is costlier than any Potters player, while the Sky Sports game have handed him a 5.8 price tag – 1.0 less than Matt Etherington in Pulis’ midfield. Looking at the short-term fixtures, though, it’s unlikely many Stoke players will be primed for investment. Pulis’ side square up to City, Chelsea, Swansea, Liverpool and United in the next five – such a schedule will surely see us look elsewhere, keeping an eye on Adam’s progress at the Potters until the fixture list smiles a little kinder.

Okay, I've done a first draft. Ready to slate this team guys?!

    Diego Alves, Malafeev

    Badstuber, Evra, Alba, Vidal, Rolando

The problem with FCL is that too many of the names in any team will not be known to everyone. Nothing here looks obviously wrong--Badstuber and Vidal look like good picks IMO. Alba, strangely, has not started every match this season. Also, Ronaldo has tougher matches than RVP so I picked him instead . . . my cheapie, then, is the only one that plays on opposite days from Messi and RVP.

        Cheers for the wisdom!

That seems to be good tactics. I've picked GKs and DEFs that play on alternate days, but I figured I'd always play the front 3. I did wonder about Alba, but he was just 0.5 cheaper than Alves and was a revelation in my Euro 2012 team.

I'll just play my wildcard early 😉

I've heard people talk about playing all front three. That's fine, but it doesn't stop you from being smart with your manager's substitutions. You certainly do not want to leave a strong defender or mid on the bench if one of your forwards gets a 2 or 1. If all three forwards play on the same day you are stuck with any 1s and 2s. If at least one plays on a different day from the others, there is a chance you can take out a 1/2 forward for a mid with a chance to score big.

That's true. I guess anyone would be better to put in than a player who got 1 point. I'll get the hang of it, the rules seem to make it too easy to be true more than anything.

    Lost on last page ..........

#1 with Charlie Adams delivery Huth and the big boys will defo score more goals. No doubt I see Adams picking up double figures in assists this year
#2 If you ever see the ESP figures required to get bonus points in a Stoke match (sometimes 12-16 collects the BP's) Adams will clean up BPs for Stoke
#3 If Owen gets any game time for Stoke then surely its up front with Crouch, so what does this do to Walters Game time? will walters get dropped? will Adams take the penalties if Walters is off the pitch?

#4 Why did the Article mention Careron (4.5m Defender) played the central midfield holding role? Is there something here I don't know (well there is plenty but ...... )

      A definitely.

Howard and Cuellar are a straight swap for Mignolet and Baines and I would imagine the difference between Baines and Howard will far outscore any difference between Cuellar and Mignolet.

Hangeland is a better scoring option then Hughes.

Michu, at least in the short term, is a preferable option to Bale for me...at least until the Spurs ship settles somewhat.

I'm going for around GW12ish. You can play the second WC between GW21-24 so (assuming that I will leave the WC until the end of the January transfer window) GW12 pretty much splits the season in three.

FChampionsL he said. And I don't know. Try to hang on until the knock-outs because things get more volatile then. But if teams qualify early and rotation begins to hit the big teams it might be necessary then.

anybody got a link to the top 20 total fpl points scorers from last year? Or, indeed, all player finishing points totals for 2011/12 I thought Chris Glover did an article covering this, but I can’t seem to find it…I'm looking for the distribution/ratio of mid/forwards/defs in the top 20 or 30...

That's where I thought I read it too? But it doesn't mention the breakdown. I'm contemplating setting up a team to play 3-5-2 most weeks for the near future and i want to make sure I'm not wasting a strikers spot, if that is where most points are accrued? Particularly as many of the influential mids are pushing forward and playing like a second striker anyway, the CS and extra point for a goal might just swing it for me.

Great article though Natster, thanks for taking the time dude...

yep, agreed...you could conceivably field a mid of: Hazard, Cazorla, HBA, Michu, Pienaar...plus RVP and Tevez whilst benching Pogrebnyak...the alternative in a 3-4-3 would be Guthrie (HBA) and probably Berbatov (Pog), but the other suspects of Fletcher and Lambert, also don't appeal as much as HBA, who is often playing as far forward as Ba and Cisse at the moment anyway...

In a way I disagree, partly because I like the randomness of it all, what other reason would you have for reading something on an overpriced stoke player. I think it actually encourages people to read the articles eventually which is what the site is for mainly. Otherwise you'd just have a whole bunch of loonies in a forum talking about random stuff unrelated to football. At least this way it's a mix of both.

Ok, so your forum is just a chatroom, not a specific thread- or subject-based forum. Yeah, that would make sense. I think the scouts are working on something like that. There is an article a few days back about developments on the site and there was some discussion about that.

    Need help folks

Bertrand and Cazorla or Ivanovic and Nolan?

If I bring in Bertrand and Cazorla ill have only one active goalkeeper Jaaskeainen then Mcauley, Barnett and Demel plus Bertrand in defence but my main midfield is Cazorla,Michu,Hazard and Toure then forwards are Torres, Tevez and RVP.

Is it worth it or should I stick with Ivanovic and Nolan and keep a stronger rotational defence plus a better backup keeper with the extra funds?

At the moment, Charlie Adam would only find a place in a squad of players whose names are the most frequently misspelled on here:

    Jaskilinen - Bergovic

    Reither - Boswinga - Vermalean - Hangerland - Gorkks

    Kawaga - Carzola (c) - Adams - Pinnear (vc) - McLean

    Saurez - Pograbynek - Toress

Very few price changes. Not concerned too much about that tbh.

I have a rough idea for the WC team.
          Foster - Bego
          Baines - Hughes - Cuellar - Clyne - Demel
          Hazard - Cazorla - McClean - Michu - Guthrie
          RvP - Tevez - Lambert.

It's the 2 mid-price mids' slots that are bothering me - Pienaar, McC, Michu, Dyer, Nolan, Barfa.. Too many options. Also considering Berba and Fletcher up front.

      I feel for Coventry.

Doesn't seem that long ago we were in the 3rd tier of English Football. That was the year Andy Thomson was scoring for fun for us.

Remember when Coventry went down their fans carried the banner that every club who gets relegated from the Premier League carries, defiantly stating "We'll be back.."

That was a long time ago now.....

            So, perhaps it was LFC?

If saurez had a better conversion rate, and Gerrard didn't go corners and downing. (the asst magnet) corners perhaps he would have a better return.

Also, let's not forget Blackpool allowed him to play in more of a free role where as under Kenny he seemed a lot deeper = less return.

He could have fantastic return for Stoke if he hogs set plays with crouch and huth in team let alone if given a semi free role.
