It somehow seems strange writing up a Leighton Baines Scout Report at this time of the season. Typically, we have to wait till the second half of the campaign before Everton embark on one of those resurgent runs so synonymous with the club under David Moyes but this time round, the Toffees have been quick out the blocks:

Baines, as always, has been one of the chief protagonists. With a clean sheet, assist and five Fantasy Premier League bonus points across his first three Gameweeks, the left-back’s form reflects his side’s surprise start, with Moyes’ men registering wins against United and Villa before a temporary blip at West Brom last Saturday. According to club captain Phil Neville, the Toffees’ fine form is down to a change in pre-season build-up by Moyes – whatever the reason may be, it brings Baines onto our radars ahead of a kind upcoming run of games for the Merseysiders.

Looking at the season ticker, Everton have, arguably, the strongest run of fixtures over the next couple of months, right the way through to Gameweek 13. Investment in the Toffees’ assets looks a definite tactic to consider, then, with (NEW, SOT, LIV, SUN, NOR) all rolling up to Goodison, while trips to the likes of Wigan, QPR and Reading all offer the potential of points.

Pricing also falls in Baines’ favour this time round. The left-back had a relatively average season by his own high standards last term, producing four goals and a couple of assists – bearing in mind he returned five goals and 11 assists in the 2010/11 campaign, it’s fair to say his attacking output took a significant dive. As a result, his starting price dropped from 8.0 last season to 7.0 in FPL, while in the Sky Sports game, his cost of 7.1 looks good value.

Already, we’ve seen Baines’ creativity supply chance after chance for his team mates – indeed, no other player in the Premier League currently matches him for goalscoring opportunities provided. With a share of corner kicks, in addition to being first in line for free-kicks and penalties, he offers far more than just clean sheet potential – with the likes of City and United failing to produce returns at the back, any highly priced defender who offers the potential of attacking returns looks all the more appealing in the current climate. If Nikica Jelavic or Marouane Fellaini can apply the finishing touches to Baines’ consistent left flank delivery, a bandwagon seems almost inevitable.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I get why you're cynical but take a look at the stats. His creativity level is about the same as Mata, Arteta and Ben Arfa and he actually has a better goalscoring record than any of them in the games since he moved to midfield.

If those player were 5m, and classed as a defender even if they were playing for Wigan, you'd take a punt.

So I guess thats why u decided to play your wc?
And now on your wc u apparently have RvP (and Hazard?), but the plan is to transfer him out next gw, get loads of money to spend on other players (= more transfers).
What was the point of playing your wc?

Van Persie has to be a long term commitment imo. Barring injury, his price will continue to rise and rise. Either get him now while he's 'cheap', or don't get him at all. I don't understand the point of bringing him in for one game.

Do you really need to swap him out at his price? Of course if he remains benched and Sagna comes back 100% then you will have to sell eventually but at 4.5m (or whatever he is now) you can surely afford to have him benched for a week or two?

I'm on a WC myself and i'm very tempted to keep him this week. I think Arsenal have the shortest clean sheet odds of any team in GW4

Me too. Wouldn't really play him away at city anyway.

He could still get a home game against Che, which is not so bad. I'm tempted to hold him until Sagna is fully back (bad pun intended).

In regards to Jenkinson - Realistically as soon as Sagna is back to full match fitness, he'll start. I think Jenkinson will start this weekend but then be moved out and Sagna will hold down the spot. The same situation with Mertesacker/Koscielny.

I think Jones being out adds to Rafaels potential for minutes. Smalling is the only other rival for that RB spot but he is still out so I really can't see any other player challenging for the position, Valencia is the only real alternative but it's obvious he is a better attacker so seems unlikely.

Rafael = A good prospect at the moment

At least 2-3 weeks for Jenkinson. Wenger will probably give Sagna limited time in CL to ease him into the league. Wenger has learned his lesson from last year. He came off the bench against Villa in the 89th on January 29th; and didn't start until Feb. 26th.

I don't think Jenkinson will be dropped as soon as Sagna is fit. Wenger/Bould may well go with the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" motto with the Arsenal defense and keep him as part of a back 4 that's doing little wrong.

If he misses more than half the next 8 games, he's an easy swap.

If he fails to start after next week, he's an easy swap.

If swans keep up their record without him, he's an easy swap.

Of course it's a calculated risk, but cheaper than the risks that are Kolorov, Rafael, even Jenkinson. With Gibbs at 5.5, I may be up for it.

My only real concern is - is he worth a tranny out in a few weeks?

I plan to transfer a defender out in gw 9. It could be him or Demel.

My experience is, whenever you feel confident enough to play two defenders from the same team, it usually ends up biting you. If you're trying to save money, go with Jenkinson, but people reckon he'll be replaced by Sagna once he's back. Gibbs seems like the most 'nailed on', apart from Vermaelen so he might be your best bet.

Well, I know about as much about Dwight Tiendalli as any of you.

    So his Wiki says

"Tiendalli played 5 matches at the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup Finals for Netherlands U-21.
In 2006 he was part of the Netherlands squad that won the UEFA U-21 Championship 2006 in Portugal and he was also named in the UEFA Team of the Tournament."

    He's 26, Ben Davies is 19.

I wonder if he might have the edge in winning a starting place.

It's a real shame. Even if the new guy comes in at a nice price (like 4.5), we have no idea yet whether he's backup for Davies, or Davies is backup for him or whether they will share gametime equally.
