Martin Jol added plenty of experience to his Fulham first-team squad on Tuesday afternoon by snapping up Giorgos Karagounis until the end of the season. Having recently lost the services of Danny Murphy, Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele, Jol’s move for the 35-year-old free agent will re-inject some creativity into the Cottagers’ midfield for the campaign ahead:

The Fulham boss was clearly delighted to bring the Greek captain to London after seeing both Dempsey and Dembele depart in a dramatic transfer deadline day. Karagounis joins the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Hugo Rodallega and Mladen Petric in arriving at the club this summer as Jol goes about the task of restructuring his side:

Giorgos Karagounis has a wealth of club and international experience and I’m happy that he’s joined us for this season. He’s been an influential player for his club sides and is a renowned player in world football as he’s about to become the most-capped player for Greece. He brings many certain qualities to our squad.

The Statistics

Karagounis’ career began in the Panathinaikos youth set-up before he was packed off to Apollon Smyrni as an 18-year-old. Over a couple of seasons, he produced nine goals from 55 appearances before returning to his former club in time for the 1998-99 campaign. Over the next five years, the midfielder became a key member of the side, finding the net 25 times in 118 league games. Karagounis also produced several crucial performances in the Champions League and subsequently caught the eye of Inter Milan- as a result, he moved to Italy in 2003 but his time in Serie A was a major disappointment.

During the course of two seasons the midfielder featured just 31 times and, with 17 of those appearances as a substitute, he failed to produce any attacking returns. The playmaker moved on to Benfica for the next two years, finding the net three times in 45 league matches before he once again found his way back to Panathinaikos. Karagounis remained in his native country for the next five seasons, grabbing 12 goals and 20 assists from 127 league games before the club released him on a free transfer this summer. A wealth of international experience has seen Karagounis turn out 120 times for the Greek national side, finding the net on nine occasions.

The Prospects

Much may depend on how Jol rearranges his system in light of the recent departures. After the closure of the transfer window, the Fulham boss admitted he would look to find the “right balance” after Dembele’s departure left a gaping hole in his first XI. Jol fielded Steve Sidwell alongside Mahamadou Diarra in central midfield in a 4-4-2 formation at West Ham but the 3-0 Upton Park defeat certainly gave him plenty to ponder.

Quite whether Karagounis is ready for immediate action is another matter entirely, though; the player’s last competitive match was at Euro 2012 and he admitted he is still building up his match fitness at the moment, suggesting he could be slowly eased into the first-team fold.

As the season unfolds, though, Sidwell looks the likeliest candidate to make way, with Diarra’s combative nature complementing Karagounis’ ability to dictate play in the middle of the park. Likely to be handed set-piece duties for the Cottagers, his delivery could be a key aspect in how we assess his Fantasy potential, with a price of around 5.0 – 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) the likeliest scenario. The club’s strong home form under Jol is certainly cause for optimism; 36 of their 48 goals last term were scored at the Cottage and with five under their belt in the season opener with Norwich already, the potential for Fantasy returns is obvious.

With (WBA, wig, sot, AVL, rdg) amongst their next six fixtures, the upcoming schedule certainly looks kind for Jol’s side. If Karagounis can quickly settle and establish a regular role under Jol, his eye for a killer pass and superb free-kick delivery could well earn him a place on Fantasy managers’ Watchlists over the next few Gameweeks.

    Any thoughts on this:

Petric for Fulham – 16 PTS at home GW 1
F’all since then in two away games
Home to WBA – Double figures again?

Could Petric score card for Fulham go like Dempsey’s did last season for home games?

Ha, I've resisted the urge too, just barely. What has sustained me is the fact that my score last year after wild carding was pretty bad. So, you never know, these teams may look shiny but your exciting team may do better this weekend.

There's really not that many bandwagons or anything that you probably don't already have on your team.

Sick amounts used their WC though, was already up to 400,000+ by the last GW I think, which has got to be a decent Percentage of people who dn't just forget their teams after 1 week.

Most WC teams aren't that different from my team, so I'll be keeping my WC until I feel I really need it. Lots of injuries/suspensions for key players or profitable double gameweeks seem more important to me than cosmetic changes like Petric to Lambert or Lescott to someone who's not useless.

A few people asking about NUFC defensive options at the moment, here's the situation.

    - @MsiDouglas (local journalist, reputable source) confirms Krul out for 2-3 games, Colo and Simpson out for Everton match.

    - Another local paper reporting Tiote is likely to miss the Everton match (which is potentially a huge blow) http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/newcastle-united/nufc-news/2012/09/13/cheick-tiote-likely-to-miss-nufc-v-everton-game-72703-31829499/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

If Tiote misses out, I still expect Anita to play RB and the defence to look like this:

    Harper

    Anita
    Willamson/Perch
    Taylor
    Santon

It's not awful on paper, but I think we'll struggle to cope. Particularly as Ben Arfa won't provide a lot of defensive cover to Anita at RB against Pienaar/Baines. This may have be tempered by Tiote to an extent but this burden is now likely to fall on Bigirimana who looks a good prospect, but is only 18 years old with very limited experience.

Ha yeah, I think we could be in trouble reacting to the knock downs from Fellaini / Jelavic. For a tall lad, Williamson is awful in the air and can just see the rest ball watching as X strides on to lash home.

    Good afternoon gentlemen.

Your opinions please on a "fire and forget" change for Krul. This is not FPL so I need someone to play every game, and I can afford any budget to mid-range pick. So who should it be? I'm thinking:

    Foster or Vorm?

Hopefully for maximum clean sheetage for the remainder of the season.

    Divulge your insights at will...

Surprised by the lack on interest in Fletcher during this break.

    - Plays as the lone striker with little competition for a starting place and no European football.
    - In Sess, Johnson, McClean and Larsson he has a hugely underrated array of creative talent to supply him.
    - Historically proven home and away goalscorer in a less talented team.
    - Good fixtures.
    - Already scored twice for his new team.
    - A DGW on the horizon.

7m puts him a little over some other decent options (e.g. Lambert) but he still looks like he offers great value - Yet so little interest?

    WC team so far is:

    Foster, Begovic
    Ivanovic, Demel, Cuellar, X, X
    The usual 3, Guthrie, X
    RVP, Tevez, X

    A - Hughes, Figueroa, HBA, Lambert + 0.5M
    B - Hughes, Clyne, Pienaar, Fletcher/Berba + 1M
    C - Gibbs, Clyne, Pienaar, Fletcher/Berba + 0M
    D - Gibbs, Clyne, HBA, Lambert + 0M

I think C or D could be better long term, though I am willing to save money for Gibbs transfer later. Which quartet to go for?

My gut says HBA + Lambert too, but then I doubt if i should have an Everton player for thier run of games.

Hey guys, been messing with this WC team for a while now, what do you think of my current balance:

    Foster/Bego

    Baines/Gibbs/Clyne/Demel/Cuellar

    Michu/Hazard/Cazorla/Maloney/Guthrie

    RVP/Tevez/Jelavic

Tossing up between the above team, or Gibbs -> Hughes and Maloney -> Morrison

    Any thoughts much appreciated!

Wow - good going with the team value!

I've gone Guthrie/Maloney because they rotate and they're cheap - I'd be very tempted by Nolan or Morrison but the extra 1m for Maloney gives me money for a better defender so it works out better overall. Add to that, Maloney's stats are at least as good as anyone else's atm so he looks like good value.

Fletcher I really like the look of - Toss up between him and Jelavic really but, obviously, Fletcher is cheaper.

It's not far off my team, as keep on chopping and changing and considering the benefits of having Bale or not.

I am 0.2 short of doing that but have a few rises to come in today/tomorrow which would allow it.

      I currently have

      Foster > Jussi
      Gibbs > Mcauley
      Cueller > Nelson (possibly a reading 3.9er)
      Maloney > Bale
      Jelavic > Lambert

For what it's worth, yours probably has the balance I am lacking, although I'm not convinced at Gibbs at £5.5m (had Sagna in at one point, but given his recent comments plus he's now out for 3weeks, I will steer clear for now).

Cameron's a risk with Jenkinson also in your team. I think the neither of them will play in two weeks time. Sagna and Kightly, Pennant, N'Zonzi, Adam, Whelan respectively. Otherwise, i feel your team is quite balanced and very nice. But since you have Graham, I would swap Michu with HBA.

And also (and although no one will agree with me there):
      Bale out. Nasri in

What are your thoughts on Gaston Ramirez? Will he prosper in PL? I am looking for some alternative for Kagawa as he seems too risky. My team currently is:

    De Gea / Jussi

    Saylor / Hangeland / Shawcross / Cuellar / Clyne

Kagawa / Hazard / Ben Arfa / Cazorla / Michu

    Tevez / Fletcher / Graham

And I still have 2.9 in the bank with no free transfers left. WC already used. Any other possible transfers to make to bring me more points? And no RVP bullshit .. I don't have him and I wont transfer half of my team out to squeeze him in.
