Earlier this morning, Southampton’s official twitter feed were first to give Fantasy managers the heads-up of a potential double Gameweek 22. The Saints’ previously postponed trip to Chelsea – cancelled due to the latter’s World Club Championship involvement last month – has now been pencilled in for Wednesday January 16.

Whether the league clash takes place all depends on the result of tomorrow’s FA Cup Third Round match between the two clubs. If the game ends all square, the above-mentioned date will be utilised for a cup replay and the league match rescheduled for another, as yet unspecified, time – if either side win, the double Gameweek will take place.

The news now adds an unexpected twist to the winter wildcard scenario. We could now, potentially, have back-to-back double Gameweeks to plan for, bearing in mind Arsenal and West Ham have a double the following week.

Southampton also visit Villa in Gameweek 22 and, while Chelsea face a testing trip to Stoke, there’s no doubt the home clash at the Bridge looks enticing, in spite of the Blues’ surprise loss to QPR last Wednesday. Indeed, Rafa Benitez’s decision to hand Juan Mata and Eden Hazard brief second-half sub roles against Harry Redknapp’s side should ensure they both start tomorrow’s match – boosting the Blues’ chances of progress.

Demba Ba’s move to Stamford Bridge – confirmed at midday by the Blues – brings him immediately onto the radar. At this moment, Ba is still classified as a Newcastle player in Fantasy games, meaning managers could conceivably, have four Blues players for the double if they choose to load up on Benitez’s side – a very risky tactic, however, given we’ll be wanting Arsenal and West Ham options in our squads immediately afterwards. The likes of Ross Turnbull could also come into the equation, offering us a cut-price short-term keeper option if Petr Cech remains sidelined.

While nothing is set in stone yet, the news at least shakes up our tactics and offers plenty variety to our approaches – undoubtedly good news, given the many identikit RMWCT posts currently doing the rounds.

All eyes on St Mary’s tomorrow afternoon, then.

8 point hit too much for the Chelsea DGW (if there is one)?

Suarez, Silva, Cuellar -> Torres, Mata, Azpi

Currently just have Clyne, would mean a 4 point hit the following week to get Podolski and Nolan/WHM Defender

that's my plan mate, currently have 6, plan a -8 this week to make it 7

Turbull, Clyne, O'Brien, Gibbs, Mata (c), Theo, C. Cole

Next week will look to flog Mata to J. Cole/Santi and maybe Bale to the other, depending on O'Brien's fitness

all things told i think I'll keep the jan wc as planned.

Just laid out a team, and I'd only be looking at 1 or 2 extra DGWers (1 of which is Ba who might not even play both games). I can get 7 out easily enough, maybe 8 at a push next week. Think that will suffice

Turnbull, Clyne, O'Brien/Demel Mata, Walcott, Cole/Santi (or both) Cole. That will do i think.

Suppose if you have both WCs it makes sense to play them in GW22 and GW24 right? Decent plan?

    GW22: Wildcard 1
    TURNBULL, (JAASK)
    LUIZ, CLYNE, Cuellar, (GIBBS, DEMEL)
    MATA, Bale, Fellaini, Walcott, (NOLAN)
    LAMBERT, Rvp, Berba

    GW23: Bale (MUN) -> Santi
    GW24: Wildcard 2, clearout

It really depends on how many of those DGW players you already own?

I currently have Mata, Demel, Noble and Walcott, and in all honesty I probably only want to add 1/2 players to that lot for the DGW matches which I can do through normal transfers.

I think people are getting slightly carried away by the DGW, yes it's an opportunity to garner a little bit extra points wise, but it is far from a guaranteed thing with the threat of rotation hanging over many options.

Just had a (brief) look at your team on FPL.

You are doing very well overall for sure, and I'm not sure you need to go so wild regarding these DGWs.

I would possibly just consider making sure you have some Chelsea coverage as a priority, and forget about Southampton if it comes at the cost of points or a wildcard.

Ah, 0.1m short of that. Let's hope Federici rises back to 4.4m! 🙂

That said, this is exactly what I was saving the WC for - a top team with a DGW. We may not get any more this season, so tempted to take the plunge now and use my GW24 WC to get me to the end of the season.

I can totally understand the temptation, I've got both WC intact myself, I'm just not sure enough points will be garnered from the doubles to make it worth losing both wildcards.

That column on the right is the most important though, if you've watched any Chelsea games recently Luiz hasn't actually been that much more of a threat, all of his shots are from range, and he's not exactly the best distance shooter either... I'd still back Ivanovic if you want defensive goal threat..

Not a lot of Wilson love around here? Surely a shoe in at 4.0? Tempting to treble-up at that price, instead of Harte?

    Will give me:

    Mignolet/Bunn
    Shawcross Cameron Wilson Cuellar Demel

The double Stoke-Sunderland has worked well through December. I might even upgrade Cameron to a Rafael/Luiz class player depending on what I do with Tevez.

I, like the rest of you, am now a little confused about what is the best road to take! Set up OK for both, with Clyne and Puncheon, Torres, Demel and Walcott. While I can figure out whether a WC could be a good idea later on, I would like some more immediate advice!

Torres. I wanted to get rid, but if the DGW does happen, that doesn't make sense any more does it? Even with Ba there I imagine he'll play at least 1, possibly two...

Have to stick really, don't I?
