As we wave farewell to a Gameweek that failed to deliver the anticipated bounty of points, we assess the lessons learned. How Luis Suarez turns nasty when the goals go missing, how Everton’s recovery could be short-lived and consider whether it’s time to severe ties with treasured assets, with motivation now a key factor.

Suarez turns bad boy when things go awry…
It was all going so well for the Uruguayan. With double figure Fantasy returns in his last three outings, Suarez was flying and had become a fixture in many a squad, providing a hugely viable alternative for those shedding the off-colour Robin Van Persie. Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat at Southampton has put a rather different complexion on matters, however. With the St Mary’s yellow card, Suarez is now just a single booking away from serving a two-match ban. He has to navigate through the next three league outings, avoiding another caution, in order to save himself and his Fantasy owners from an untimely interruption to his season run-in. Significantly, Suarez’s last four bookings have all come in Liverpool defeats so, with Villa, West Ham and Reading to come, perhaps victories will ensure not only goals for Suarez but also a safe path to the April 14 curfew date.

Everton may have re-gained momentum but will struggle to maintain it…
The victory over City continued Everton’s incredible record against the blue side of Manchester and, having threatened to wreck their title hopes last season, this time around the Toffees seem to have applied the final nail in their coffin. Everton’s performance was encouraging ahead of the Gameweek 33 double with QPR and Arsenal although, with both Marouane Fellaini and Steven Pienaar now facing two-match bans, there’s a real risk that David Moyes’ side will lose the momentum gained on Saturday over the next pair of matches. Everton will face Stoke at Goodison and Spurs at the Lane without arguably their key attacking players and, with Phil Jagielka and Tim Howard also absent at the back, arguably the spine of the side will be brittle. This could be good news for those holding Stoke and Spurs assets and curb interest in Everton ahead of their double.

The keeper situation is worsening by the week…
So Mark Bunn picks up a ban and could lose his Gameweek 31 start to John Ruddy. Wojciech Szczesny is kept on the bench and seemingly looks to have lost the jersey to Lukas Fabianksi for the time being. Ali Al-Habsi is dropped to the bench with Joel Robles given a start against Newcastle. Meanwhile Tim Howard, Tim Krul and Pepe Reina remain sidelined. In a nutshell, then, these are turbulent times between the posts, aided somewhat by Asmir Begovic’s clean sheet – his first in twelve league outings. Can we put trust in the Stoke stopper again or should we just shelve our ambitions in the mid-price and jump on Petr Cech, Joe Hart or David De Gea for the run-in? Even with the United man apparently ensconced in behind a rotating back four, there’s even a chance we’ll see some rotation at Old Trafford once the title is sewn up, such is our fortune when it comes to this position.

Old loyalties are being tested…
Forget Robin Van Persie’s run of one goal in six for a moment. How about Theo Walcott’s similar run of no goal in five, Juan Mata’s run of a just an assist in his last four or even Michu’s barren spell of goal returns in one of his last twelve league appearances? Having put faith in these Fantasy mainstays and been richly rewarded for long spells, suddenly the faith is being stretched to breaking point, as previously consistent scorers hit the buffers. In a Gameweek that saw so few heavy-hitters deliver, we can perhaps be philosophical about the failings of these players but at what point do you cut your losses and look elsewhere? Perhaps the willingness to cut ties with established players when they begin to falter is the difference between a good Fantasy manager and a great one.

Motivation and fatigue are becoming key factors…
With Swansea struggling for form after sealing a European spot, Newcastle and Spurs failing after Europa League exertions and City falling flat in their doomed quest to challenge United, suddenly it seems that Fantasy managers have to look to external factors more than ever. Is there a risk that teams without the motivation of a relegation battle or the scramble for a top four finish, suffering from a diminished will to win? While Aston Villa and QPR put on a show that typified the cut and thrust of Premier League football with millions at stake, Stoke and West Brom played out a meaningless 90 minutes almost without incident. As we reach the season climax, it seems we now have to question what’s left in the tank and whether there’s enough at stake to motivate players to perform at their top level and for managers to field their strongest lineups. Failure to consider such factors in our selection policy could be decisive over the run-in.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

In relation to the GK summary in the article, worth noting that Cesars place in the next game is far from certain, and my not have even started against Villa had Green been fit. http://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/queens-park-rangers/redknapp-to-put-faith-in-forgotten-stopper

    Heads up on DDG...

Despite people regularly stating the contrary, he does not have to play 10 times to get a medal. A player making 10 appearances get’s one automatically, the club then can apply for others as they did for example (twice) with Tomasz Kuszczak who played 2 and 9 games respectively but still got a medal.

Of course this doesn’t mean SAF won’t rotate him anyway… 😉

Dawson came off early in the Spurs game, I assumed that implied a real injury?

Lennon's been missing from the Spurs lineup for a few games now, and they could've done with him vs Fulham so that one seems genuine at least.

Rio isn't playing because Fergie doesn't want him to, and he doesn't want to run the risk of injuries putting into doubt a contract renewal, its that simple

That's pretty silly. Lennon's been out for a few games now, and Dawson wouldn't have come off at half time if it wasn't an actual injury.

Rio doesn't even have an injury. He played the victim of being left out of the squad, and once he got his ego boost and got recalled, he turned it down. Unless you're injured, you should turn out for your country. I'm a Utd fan, and don't have much respect for Rio tbh.

Sorry for REPOST but I would like to use some words of advice here:

    Bego Bunn
    Zabaleta/ Rafael /R.Martin (J.Bennett, Wilkinson)
    Mata/ Bale/ Walcott/ Sissoko/ Nani
    Sturridge/ RVP/ Suarez

    A) Mata > Caz (potential rest vs. Reading+DGW)
    B) Sturridge > Kone (Already have Suarez vs. decent fixtures for Kone+dgw36)
    C) Nani > Coutinho
    C) Other

Any suggestions? Planning to invest in Caz but I might want a Chelsea cover due to their fixtures. Lampard’s consistency looks really good, take Nani out maybe(but yes he might have a DGW but I really hate the rotation risks)? Looking for long term options! Thanks.

Last game Rodgers felt he had to start Skrtel and Allen to give them some playing time, and they were the main reason the team lost. By the time Allen was subbed for Lucas it was too late, Rodgers should be playing his first choice XI every week now, and ignore the hurt feelings of the players not starting

Apart from the obvious fatigue setting in from a long season, from a psychological point of view I think there is factors to consider when assessing RVP's dip in form.

I think he may actually be not only tired but also a little depressed about not performing as well as he might have against Real over the two legs. That was his big moment and he was largely anonymous throughout and fluffed a great chance in the first leg and never had the opportunity to redeem himself.

There are players who are really performing right now that I think still have that hunger and desire and are playing with confidence. Rooney for example has a point to prove and he has a hunger to show it was a mistake to drop him against Real.

RVP in contrast may be feeling like his season is reaching a bit of an anti-climax. After doing all he could to win Man Utd the league, he's practically done it now and has nothing left to prove as it's plain sailing. But what he'd really want is for Man Utd to be still in the CL and for him to be taking centre stage, unfortunately that hasn't materialised.

But there is still the FA cup to be won and as he was rested and they failed to progress, he may be looking at the cup as a real chance to shine once again. If he still has some hunger and desire left in him I think that will be where he will want to show it mainly, seeing as the league is all but wrapped up.

He thrives on the big occasions, and the Real defeat might have felt like a massive downer as he failed to influence it. In contrast, I'm not sure how motivated he will be in the league now with nothing to play for really.

I don't really think a player thinks too much about Cup game and League games. Yes, I know there are priorities, but wouldn't you want to score in every game that you're starting rather than think if it's better to score in the league or in the cup.

I just mean in terms of performances, he's not all about the goals, it's just that he looks so sluggish and knackered of late.

He didn't look very motivated against Reading, a game he could have gone crazy in but like the rest of the team he was very much disinterested in putting on a big performance, rather just stroll to victory.

Whereas the Cup game is huge and would give them something more to look forward to. That's why I think RVP will be looking at that game as one he'd love to get back to form in.

I can see where you're coming from but I think you're reading too much in this it. He's out of form. He's been in form for about 2 seasons. I largely expect him to find the goals again. Though for now, I certainly wouldn't captain him over other players in form.

I think all the United players were hurting after the defeat to Madrid. I agree that his confidence won't be great atm minute but forwards love scoring goals and winning games and I can't see him picking and choosing the games he cares about doing well in. Top players want to be the talking point in every game be it a cup tie or a league game. I am starting to think he might be playing down that hip injury when he fell into the camera and it could in fact be causing him some discomfort or restricting his movement.

yeah, you could be right about the injury, although it would seem strange for Fergie to play him 90 mins if there was really a problem. But as you said, it might be affecting his movement.

I don't mean he chose to not do well against Reading but that the motivation to perform was harder, sometimes when you're tired there is a conflict between your personal desire and what you can actually physically do. He might have loved to score a few goals and get back into his stride but that freshness isn't there and the fatigue is weighing him down a bit.

Players can be stubborn when it comes to picking up injuries and don't like to admit they are carrying one. If they can get away with it they will even if it means sacrificing performance. I could be wrong and it could be down to fatigue and a blip in form. I just thought that might be a factor.

I think that armchair psychology is crazy. Fatigue is a legitimate concern, as are his subpar numbers lately, but speculating about motivation/feeling discouraged is just crazy IMO.

Why? I do it all the time to think about the motivation behind a player's performances in FPL. I think it's a legitimate element to consider when picking players and predicting future results. Ok it might sound like armchair psychology and a bit too deep but it's just an attempt at looking at what might lie behind a player's lack of confidence.

There is a perfect example in Torres, there is a lot of psychological damage there that affects his performances. He might have the talent but he's just not doing it consistently at Chelsea.

My main reasons: 1) These guys are professionals, I really don't think "motivation" is that big of a factor match to match. Sure, some players play harder than others, but I don't think players play harder/less hard because they're angry/sad, it has much more to do with fitness. 2) We just can't know, based on what we see on the field. It's easy to say, "Oh he's upset about this," but the fact of the matter is fantasy managers have no idea what's going on in players heads. Talking about numbers and form is fine because we can see that, but trying to get something out of a player's facial expressions just seems impossible to me.

And as for Torres, I guess so. But I also think it's possible that people are overstating the psychological damage. That could be part of it, but he wasn't exactly in great form at the end of his Liverpool career. I think it's easy to say when a player is struggling, "Oh he's lacking confidence," and I just don't think that argument is that convincing.

Re Confidence: I also think causality is interesting: Is Torres not scoring goals because he's not confident? Or is he not confident because he's not scoring goals? I think it's more the latter, because every once in a while he'll show signs and people will yell "He's back!" I just don't think he's as good of a player anymore, and I don't think the reason is that his confidence is constantly fluctuating, I think that's an outcome.

True. I just thought it'd be intriguing to look into the psychological elements that might explain the dip in form as opposed to just putting it down to fatigue only.

A massive stab in the dark against Reading the supply from UTDs mids was dreadful, throughout the game he found great positions in the box, calling for the ball, nine times out of ten it never arrived. Even his overhead effort from Kags, was down to an awful pass played behind him instead of in front. Young was dreadful, actually Rooney wasn't exactly quality either, one shot near the end with him standing motionless, on the left, hands on hips. Point is RVPs decline may not totally down to him.

I agree with this, it can't all be down to him. The team itself haven't been looking that great lately.

But I think that extra 'edge' that RVP might have had at the start of the season is not quite there right now, he can have the ability to influence games out of nowhere but we haven't seen that too much recently.

Forgot to mention earlier. Good article Mark.

I imagine most players loyalty breaking points with the established high scorers will be when they are caught or left adrift in their MLs.
Failure to adapt quickly to rivals could be costly.

Yeah, I'm looking at Mata, Michu, Walcott and RVP and wondering whether my faith in them has cost me dearly in recent weeks. It's not like I was blind to alternatives, it's just that I was inclined to "stick". Like I say, it's the ability to know when to move on and the balls to do so that is perhaps the difference between a good Fantasy manager and a bloody great one.

If you'd suggested dumping RVP after his first blank in the run most would have thought you mad, now everyone says he's due.
I think working on what you can do with your total budget for points and not just fixing on the one personality is the way forward. But it's very difficult to detach yourself from past point hauls.
The same happened last year for many with Drogba.

Need a little feedback and curious, and grateful for any responses.

Looking to improve on my fortunate position within FPL and unsure whether to use my WC in GW33 or GW36.

    My options are to:
a). bring players in over the next two gamewweks whom will score (hopefully) the most points irrespective of whether they have a double gameweek in week 33 and then bulk up with players whom still have a double gameweek, concentrating on those initially in gameweek 33, making points if necessary to accomodate gameweek 36 and beyond.

    OR

b). bring players in over the next two weeks mindful of those with a double gameweek in GW33, saving my wildcard for gameweek 36 and blow my wildcard on a full range of doublers in 36, making appropriate transfers for the last two gameweeks including points hits if necessary.

    What do you think?

    Thanks, dave

This may seem like a strange question but I'm actually interested in others' opinions. Which team will get more points for the rest of the season without any transfers?

    A.
    Reina (Cesar)
    Rafael - Wilson - Hangeland (O'Shea - Clyne)
Cazorla - Walters - Nolan - Coutinho (Kagawa)
    Rooney - Lambert - Berbatov

    B.
    Lloris (Szczesny)
    Vertonghen - Azpilicueta - G. Johnson (Vermaelen - Santon)
    Gerrard - Mata - Lallana - Dyer (J. Cole)
    Defoe - P. Cisse - Tevez

I'm in a draft league and my team is A and I am currently 37 points behind my opponent, who has team B. I know he has me beat on defense, but I think my attacking players are better than his. I find it very difficult to determine which of these two teams is better for the remainder of the season, please weigh in with your thoughts!

Why are people rushing to sell Fellaini? Wasting 2 transfers over the next 3 GW for 0.2 value or something seems ridiculous. Especially since after GW28 most players have decent front 8. So why aren´t people just benching Fellaini for this 2 GW?

Davies to Monreal. Good or bad move?

How can you be sure Gibbs won't take his place back after the internationals.

Monreal is first choice regardless of Gibbs fitness IMO

You can't. But Reading, Wba, Norwich & Everton is worth the risk IMO.

    Just a thought!

Rodgers tells Suarez to keep his nose clean for the next three games. Villa goes well.

West Ham he gets an unlucky yellow card (I know, but stretch your imagination) He now faces a two game ban.
However if he then scores and takes his shirt off a second yellow and one match ban would then take him beyond the ten yellow date when he returns.

Do we reckon that Harte has now lost his place? Have 0.5 to spend and thinking of upgrading to Jenkinson, with the doubles in mind?

Bit early to say I think, he's only been out for one game. It may have been tactical for Utd.
