While I’ve been providing some informal updates on HomeCrowd (our new comments system), I thought it was about time I provided an official update on developments.

We’ve been testing the new comments system behind the scene for a couple of weeks, using it to discuss Scout Picks and other site matters. With a few more tweaks to come, this weekend we should be at the point to allow a number of community members to get access and help us move that testing on.

Ed is worked today on adding inline admin tools (to allow the moderation of comments in the list view rather than via the admin panel) and completed the recent comments widget to mirror the current version. Once these are in place, we’ll be looking for a small group of community members to help offer their assistance.

Testers will see a very similar look and feel to the present system, which is intentional of course, with the notable addition of comment voting, stickies and fixed elements like email notification of replies to comments.

For testing purposes, we will be displaying the comment rating and discussion rating that votes creates – in basic terms, the reputation of a user is added to the comment rating when a vote is cast (or subtracted if it’s a downvote). Discussion ratings are the sum of the comment rating and its replies. We’ll be hiding both numbers when we go live, although we may represent comment rating graphically and users will be able to sort comments by discussion rating in order to view the very best discussions for a given article.

There are new features to be added after this phase of testing, notable profile pages for recalling user comments and replies, the follow function to allow you to filter threads for comments made by your favourite posters and the full sticky comment feature that will list recent stickied comments as “Hot Topics” in the sidebar for easy retrieval alongside the recent comments widget.

These are all features that will be applied and tested in the coming weeks, by which time we will have hopefully got the basics of the system tested and ready for rollout to the live site – with your help.

I’ll be posting details of how you can volunteer to help test HomeCrowd on Friday, in time to let some users loose on the test servers at some point this weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Interesting chat on England pulling out of the WC above.

The reason most people outraged by the Qatar being awarded the hosting rights isn't their climate itself but the fact that they're not an established footballing nation with an established league. I think it's important that the whole world can be included in hosting as it is a global event but there just doesn't seem to be any footballing reasons behind the decision just money.

The summer weather is just an unfortunate byproduct. Fifa should at least have presented the idea of moving the tournament to the winter when they awarded it. Bizarre how they can claim not to have taken it into consideration whilst making their choice.

The whole selection process is a farce...The people who matter when choosing should be the fans and players first...Who the hell wants to go to Qatar to either play or watch...

Very true. If people do stay away and crowds are subsequently very low then maybe FIFA will learn their lesson. Sad fact is though that a great deal of the money raised is through tv rights and they probably won't be affected.

Not even sure about that...The TVrights are subject to viewing figures ultimately..Games played in the San Siro/Bernabau/NouCamp (amongst many others) are a global spectacle. Add to that the publicity machines already in place in the developed countries and the games can't fail.. The world cup will always be a success of sorts but will a tournament hosted by Qatar really be a bigger spectacle than if Italy did it...or Spain...or England...It's an impossible thing to measure but i doubt it.

then it will be in Asia e.g. China every year, since everyone will vote for their country.
worse yet, it will be like the EURO, as it will happen in England/Spain every 4 years.

mmm...yeah...The high water mark for World cup tournaments was without a doubt Italia 90...Not in terms of gameplay but in terms of the whole event...That was the standard set and it is that standard that the footballing authorities should look to when deciding subsequent tournaments. Brazil is obviously a great pick and will be fab...but Qatar and Russia ????....

It has to be done. If FIFA want the game to be truly global they have to be prepared to give everywhere a try - and Qatar is an extreme case. Risks inevitably have to be taken. They are fortunate in that countries like Germany, England, Italy, France (and Spain, although they probably couldn't afford it in the current financial climate) would be able to step in at a months notice should things go wrong with the original host country. Times change and even FIFA, typically a very slow-moving organisation, have recognised this.

'Hot Topic' in football at the moment is Racism. Russia has the most vocal and open Racism problems in football in the world currently. Surely FIFA shouldnt be rewarding this? Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, Blatter says 'just dont be gay whilst your there' its disgusting these countries have been awarded such an honour as the World Cup. (I know racism and homophobia exist everywhere but these places are extreme)

You are, of course, correct in all you say - but we have to be careful of 'trial by media'. Poland/Ukraine were deemed racist, but the Euros came and went without incident. Maybe staging the Euros helped educate the locals? Like I say, FIFA need to take risks and, if they work, should be applauded for it.

i do understand, however the Euros didnt come and go without incident. there were 3 or 4 sets of fans caught racially abusing black players, and FA's of the countries were fined (less than Bendtner was for having Paddy Power pants...) i do agree education is the way forward. i just think it will mean an even smaller than normal, which is already tiny anyway, number of African fans will travel and support their team. look how odemwengie was treated out there, and roberto carlos. i just think these issues outway any 'lets give them a chance' reasons for it. hopefully it works tho and i am proved wrong!!

Surely you don't believe that hosting it in Qatar has any motive behind other than a monetary one? It's not a nation with any discernable footballing history, and it's a country with a terrible human rights record. Add to that the fact that it's wholly unsuited to the actual playing of football, and I don't think it "had to be done" at all.

Good point Jonny - I do actually believe it's more than just money - but concede that money is overwhelmingly the main factor in this case. FIFA are constantly accused of being corrupt, and there is plenty of evidence to suggest a far from clean organisation.

Qatar is an extreme case and a real risk for all the points you mention - but not to go to the Middle East would, in my opinion, also be a mistake and could lead to claims of racism.

I know what you mean about having to give the Arab world a cracking of the whip* but it's hard to pick a country which is suitable for various reasons... Even Egypt would be tricky at the moment, unfortunately.

*unfortunate turn of phrase in the context of Qatar. I just have a major issue with the country as a whole, it's a playground for the rich built on slave labour. Terrible place. If there's one positive of hosting the tournament there it's that it will hopefully shine a light on it.

Agreed - maybe that will happen - maybe they'll start getting their house in order before then. Let's not forget that when England were awarded the 96 Euros, English club teams were only just out of a ban from Europe, England fans were still causing havoc overseas (which continued right up to 1995 in Dublin) - it was a massive risk on UEFA's part to let us stage the tournament - but the tournament itself was undoubtedly the best thing to happen to improve the quality of supporters in this country.

my problem with it stems mainly of their intolerence of other cultures. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and they have said any football fans practicing homosexually will be prosecuted. Also due to their views on Israel not being recognised as a state in Qatar... 'theyve said 'they will allow them to compete' as if it is their choice. they are hosts, not the law.

Just to put it out there, people are complaining a lot about cliqueyness and how they hate it. I find this community very sharing, probably one of the best i have seen on the internet. I think i am barely a year old on this website, and the community has accepted me in no time.

During the initial stages as well, all opinions were accepted, and questions answered.

Yep, I have to say, considering that we're dealing in Fantasy Football and that we have ranks and history's to call on, I've rarely seen an elitist attitude on these pages, if at all. We seem to treat newbies well and there's plenty of respect flying around. Of course there are those who get on well who will support eachothers views but I'm hopeful this won't translate into major problems when we implement the changes.

I wouldn't think so. I think people are worried wrongly and pass an unfair judgement at the 'cliques'. I mean posters become well known, because they have gone out of the way and offered a lot of opinions and suggestions to others/new posters as well. They probably took more time out to answer questions as well. Even the competitions are organised only with one intention, to make this whole thing more fun for everyone else.

From where i see it, posters are mature enough to not use this power given to the community in in an unfair/childish way.

It is frustrating at the start when you don't know anyone and comments can go unanswered or validated but newbies just have to be patient and keep up the good posts as a vast majority on here will welcome them.

I'm guessing this is because of the ICC? It's unfortunate, but there's only 120 places up for grabs so only that number of people can be involved (although it's more like 220 with the NZ selection process...). There's obviously going to be 'in jokes' with the ICC crowd who want to have a laugh/bit of banter during the tournament, and then those on the outside.

When there's thousands that use this site regularly and only a certain number of places up for grabs, there's nothing much that can be done about that.

I've been on here since the summer of '08 and there's always been little groups that chat to each other more, but that will obviously be the case in any social situation. It's not as if people are excluded. You make an effort, you'll get included.

Also it should be pointed out that it's perfectly possible to enjoy this site and the Community without necessarily being a member of any clique. I have been using the site for about 3 years, reading all the articles and being active in the community without ever feeling part of any clique.

I'm a bit of a lone ranger in that respect and there's more than a few of us drifters on here. I see lots of cliques (FFS UEFA, the deadzoners, the Veterans on Twitter) and I have never really been part of any of them. I tend to chat to whoever has said or asked something interesting or amusing, I'll post or reply to either show my gratitude or take part in the debate/banter. I've never felt disenfranchised when posting as most of the community is welcoming and up for some good debate/banter.... except on Matchdays which is horrible and enjoyable in its own way.

Updated Watclist last night - just doing the article. Deliberated on Berb vs Giroud but, in the end, with Aresnal midfield options, went with Berba. So, much depends on whether you have Walcott and can acquire Santi I guess. I personally prefer the Santi route to Giroud for double cover - just due to form.

Last arsenal dgw I avoided Giroud and went Santi, theo and Sagna.

Toying with the same again, but need a cheap 3 forward and Giroud fits the bill but is rotation likely which is making me twitchy.

I look forward to the article 🙂

Very little in the returns though.

        Last 8.

        Santi - 4 goals, 1 assist
        Giroud - 3 goals, 2 assists

Maybe the stats tell us something different.

Santi is not consistent neither. Doesn't help when Wenger is shoving around to different positions. Walcott is the best Arsenal player to own IMO, he blanks less often.

Thinking about this as well. What always helps me make my mind is alternatives available in other positions.

Giroud has midfield alternatives, Berbatov doesn't. Then it comes down to me making a single transfer for Giroud or a hit for Santi and Dimistar.

Think it depends on the outcome of the Chelsea vs Man Utd replay... If Man Utd have a double soonest, you're sorted and you can WC them out to get Chelsea players.

If Chelsea have a DGW first, I'm not sure .. depends how you are best able to bring their players in without using your WC. You've got a few other issues though so probably justify using it sooner if that's the case.

It was a game of two halves though? We beat them at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season and also our form away to the top teams has been excellent.

We beat Liverpool, Chelsea, City away and drew with Spurs. Didn't lose any. Not counting the Carling Cup where we played useless youngsters like Scott Wootton who is just awful.

It's a risk, but I think it's probably worth taking. You need some Ars coverage for DGW, Kone is in form (alos consider J-rod) and baines is hitting form. Caz could easily draw a blank but you have ot go for it as a lot of others will be.

As its pretty quiet i thought id voice my transfer plans to all who want to listen and put their 2ps worth in. my team right now is as follows -

    Begovic Foster
    Davies Demel Clichy Debuchy Wilson
    Mata Michu Walcott Puncheon Bale
    VP Sturr Benteke

Now the plan is as follows -

    GW31 - Mata to Cazorla
    GW32 - save
GW33 - Bale, Michu, Davies to Baines, Nolan, Fellaini
    GW34 - Walcott to Bale

If Chelsea beat United in the cup i cant see a problem with it. If united win, im wothout a keeper in GW33 and it just gets messy.

    Any thoughts?

    BREAKING NEWS

Luis Suarez has hinted that he could be willing to listen to offers to leave Liverpool in the summer. "We would talk to the club, we would see if I want to go, if I don't want to go," said the striker.

TokyoRed posted this in the other thread. I think it makes a good read. So, i'll just shamelessly repost.

An investment banker stood at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The banker complimented the fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The fisherman replied, “Only a little while.”

The banker then asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish?

The fisherman said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs.

The banker then asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siestas with my wife, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine, and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life.”

The investor scoffed, “I am an Ivy League MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats, and eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats.
“The investor continued, “And instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would then sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution! You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then Los Angeles and eventually New York City, where you will run your expanding enterprise.”

The fisherman asked, “But how long will this all take?”

To which the banker replied, “Perhaps 15 to 20 years.”

“But what then?” asked the fisherman.

The banker laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions!”

“Millions. Okay, then what?” wondered the fisherman.

To which the investment banker replied, “Then you would retire. You could move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siestas with your wife, and stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

In other news Van Wolfswinkel as been sold to Norwich from my beloved club Sporting(Clube de Portugal) Lisbon.

He isn´t the best of strikers but it is one of the best that remain through the disgrace that has been this last couple of seasons. (a bit compared to what hapens in Liverpool atm, although Liverpool are finding their feet already).

Anyway, good adition to Norwich, with great play in the air... let´s see if he comes good though.

I think it´s worth (22m€ was the clause value) although I believe he still has much to grow as a footballer, if he can turn more accurate in his foot strikes then Norwich will have a great adition to their team indeed.

I retweeted this earlier and then completely for about it. I love his name and he came to Sporting with a great goal scoring pedigree.

What is your affiliation with Sporting. I always used to go them in Champy / Football Manager so I always have a soft spot for them

I´m a big fan, not a season ticket holder because I live far from Lisbon but I go to games whenever I get a chance.

We are in big trouble this year though (not close to what happenned to Rangers) as we look to fail the access to european competitions since 54 😯 !

Awful news mate 🙁 I had a look not that long ago and seen that they were nearing relegation. Horrible thing to happen.

How soon can teams be officially relegated? I'm considering getting some scrappers from the relegation threatened teams but not sure who will go when.

From past seasons, teams that have been relegated often start to play well as the pressure is off.
Sounds odd I know but it's true.

On topic (for a change) I am really excited about this new comment system and hopefully it will entice some of the quality posters who used to be very prevalent on here a few years ago back.

As a poster from the very early days of ffs I remember fondly the indepth discussions we used to have on topics which could go on all day. That was before the current paginated comment system came into use due to the heavy traffic load that.built up here. I don't think it is any coincidence that when this new system was launched that most of the quality posters disappeared as by the time a good discussion got going the page would have changed making it hardly worth the effort of typing a good coherent response with stats to back up your stance.

Anyway just thought I would post that I think these changes could be epic.

Lol that was funny old school but I was thinking of before this even, back to when all the comments were on one long page.Mark could really hit the jackpot with this system if it allows some of the quality discussions to continue beyond the 10mins or so they get currently at busy times.

Does anyone have adblock on their computer?

Does it block all ads? Even them really annoying ones at the start of a video on Youtube?

How llong does it take to download?

Can someone please send me a link to the best site for downloading it?

    I assume it is free...

      adblock? you mean pop-up blockers..

I don't think you can block the ads before the start of a video on youtube. If you are lucky, they may allow you to skip it in 5 seconds..

Have Ad block of some sort that does the job, but not the YouTube ads. Just knock 'em out when the times up.
I'll ask the children which it is.

    Good morning FFS brethren.

It is quiet isn't it? although missing the excitement of an impending gameweek, it's nice to be able to read through a page on days like this. I enjoyed the posts on the Qatar World Cup choice up to from Pasq, Daisy and Jonny, some very valid points.

Is everyone looking forward to the uninspiring international fixtures then? I'm going for a sedate 4-0 stroll for England on Friday and a dull, press backlash inducing draw on Tuesday. And a couple of injuries from popular FPL players thrown into the mix..

That sounds pretty good to be fair KoL! I'm half Scottish myself, will be watching that game. A bit more 'oomph' to a British fixture. Especially with the Scots obviously winning as per usual 🙂
