Kevin Nolan nets a hat-trick as West Ham ease past Reading. Romelu Lukaku serves up a three-goal haul in just 45 minutes against United. Gareth Bale and Philippe Coutinho help Spurs and Liverpool to narrow home wins respectively, Juan Mata ends a goal drought as Chelsea finish the season in third, while another solid defensive display sees Arsenal scrape a victory at Newcastle to take fourth:

Nolan and Carroll Sign off in Style
Prior to yesterday’s match with Reading, Kevin Nolan had scored just three times since Gameweek 9 but, with a goal and five bonus points in his previous two home fixtures, we’d handed him a place on the Scout Picks bench. The Hammers skipper ran riot against a backline that had conceded in every away fixture this season, grabbing a hat-trick to keep himself in our Fantasy thoughts over the summer – having started the season at 6.0, he looks set for an upturn in price, with yesterday’s heroics taking him to 149 points, one less than Frank Lampard and a couple more than David Silva in the midfield standings. Carroll also justified our decision to hand him a place in the Scout Picks in his final game on loan at Upton Park. The big striker maintained the form that had harvested returns in five of the last six in front of his own fans by providing a pair of assists – after a disappointing start to the campaign, he finished with four goals and four assists in his last eight Gameweeks and has placed himself firmly in the shop window over the summer, with both the Hammers and Newcastle linked with a permanent move for his services.

Lukaku Runs Riot
Dropped from the starting XI for the final match of his loan spell at West Brom, the big Belgian climbed off the bench to salvage a sensational draw in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final match in charge of the champions. Up against a second-string United backline, Lukaku simply bullied the visitors into submission with a brilliant hat-trick taking his tally to 17 goals for the season. Indeed, since the turn of the year Lukaku has delivered 11 goals and six assists in just 17 appearances – much depends on the plans of Chelsea’s incoming manager but if Lukaku can nail down the lone forward role at Stamford Bridge next time out, he could be Fantasy gold. With Fernando Torres and Demba Ba to compete with, another spell on loan may well be on the cards; certainly, such a scenario would afford him a greater chance of game time and if he can continue in the same vein, he looks a real contender for out three man frontlines next time out.

Hernandez Stakes a Claim
While Wayne Rooney was omitted from the squad once again, Javier Hernandez served notice of his intentions to nail down a regular role under David Moyes next season with a goal and assist in United’s incredible 5-5 draw at the Hawthorns. Starting alongside Robin Van Persie again, the Mexican continued on from the form that produced a goal against Swansea last Sunday and ended the season with 10 goals and five assists from just 953 minutes game time. With Van Persie notching his 26th of the season to cement his spot as the top scoring FPL player for the second campaign in succession, the Dutchman’s price may well even rise from 13.0 – Hernandez could be a real option next time round if he can continue as a regular under Moyes.

Bale Leaves it Late
Once again, Tottenham were reliant on their Welsh wonder to make the difference as Bale finally found a way past Simon Mignolet in the Sunderland goal. The Black Cats stopper had defied Andre Villas-Boas’ side time and again but was unable to prevent Bale from sealing the points with just a minute left on the clock – with maximum bonus points also in the bag, he has now produced double figures in five of his last six at the Lane. In a quite remarkable season, Bale has racked up 21 goals, nine assists and 50 bonus points and has delivered double figures on no less than 14 occasions –given that Robin Van Persie has produced eight sets of double figures, it highlights the Welshman’s explosive potential and providing he continues in a central role next time out, he’ll be favoured by many to oust the United man as the top scoring player for 2013/14 across the Fantasy games.

Mata Ends Drought
A first goal since Gameweek 25 helped Chelsea clinch third spot as Mata finished the season as second top scoring midfielder on 212 points. It brought to an end a run of 11 games without a goal as the Spaniard relied upon a raft of assists to boost his score – intriguingly, Mata (18) and Eden Hazard (16) were the top two for assists over the season and with 11 and nine goals respectively, the pair have justified their initial 9.5 price tags. With a price hike looking set for both next term, though, finding a place for one or both in our midfields will be a real balancing act – particularly with the Blues set for a double Gameweek in August, due to their European Super Cup final duties. Oscar’s relatively quiet debut season could ultimately prove beneficial to his cost for the following campaign; of Mata and Hazard are priced beyond our budgets, the young Brazilian may find himself in more teams next time out, having ended this campaign with three goals and six bonus points in his last five starts.

Coutinho Justifies the Hype
The Liverpool winger was drafted in by 60,000 FPL managers for yesterday’s home clash with QPR – more than any other midfield option in the game. Having produced a pair of assists in each of his two, Coutinho – subject of Thursday’s Monitor article for members – grabbed the only goal of the game as the Reds squeezed past Harry Redknapp’s side to finish the season with a win. With three goals and seven assists in 12 appearances since arriving at the club in January, Coutinho has quickly established himself as key to the Reds’ attacking endeavours and with Luis Suarez suspended for the first six games of next season, he looks set to arrive on many a Fantasy radar.

Gunners Hold Steady
Given they had already battered Newcastle 7-3 this season, many had expected a comfortable stroll for Arsenal at St James’ Park. Arsene Wenger’s side delivered the win that clinched fourth spot with another resilient showing yesterday – a 1-0 triumph produced their 14th clean sheet of the campaign and saw the north London club end the season with the second best defensive record in the top-flight, with 37 goals against and only 14 goals conceded on the road. Arsenal have shipped a mere two goals in the final six Gameweeks, with yesterday’s match-winner Laurent Koscielny serving up two sets of double figures in his last five appearances – both the Frenchman and Per Mertesacker should come i around the 6.0 mark next time out, having started at 5.5 and 5.0 respectively.

Lambert Back in the Goals
Recovering from a back injury in time for yesterday’s home clash with Stoke, Rickie Lambert ended a six-match scoring drought to register his 15th goal of the season. Earlier last week, Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed his start striker had been hampered with the problem for a month or so – perhaps explaining his recent fall from form – but Lambert’s strike, allied with an initial 6.0 starting price – means he ends the season as the top value outfield player in his first campaign in the top-flight. Given the progress of Jay Rodriguez under the Argentine, the two forwards price tags for 2013/14 will be intriguing, with Lambert looking set for a more substantial hike.

City Capitulate
A home clean sheet looked firmly on the cards as City welcomed Norwich to the Etihad. The hosts had produced five clean sheets in the previous seven in front of their own fans, while Chris Hughton’s side had been dire on their travels, scoring just twice in the seven away games prior to yesterday’s showdown. City’s dreadful season stuttered to a finish with a 3-2 defeat, with Brian Kidd choosing to partner Micah Richards and Matija Nastasic at the back, with Carlos Tevez joined by Edin Dzeko up top. Replaced by Sergio Aguero just after the break, Tevez finished as City’s top FPL scorer despite returning a single assist in his last six matches, while Aguero finished the campaign on 121 points – that’s 90 less than last time out and fewer than Peter Crouch and Steven Fletcher, for example, despite the fact that the latter hasn’t played since Gameweek 30 due to injury. Looking on the positive side, with a new manager in place for next term, Aguero certainly looks set to drop from this season’s initial 11.5 price and is likely to find his way onto many radars if he can rediscover the form that made him such a spectacular option in 2011/12.

    So, what are the main lessons that ppl have learnt this season?

    Mine would prob be:

    Motivation (i.e. something to play for) >> Form >> Fixtures

    Good to have a strong bench, especially across winter and rotation (e.g.: new managers, end of season)

    Both keepers need to play!! (DDG-Federici combo at the start)

    Sometimes, the most expensive person is not always the best (or don't try to max out team value just because you can)

    Controlling your budget and monitoring players' prices tightly at the start of the season even at the expense of points, pays off huge later on

    Punts are rarely worth it, unless its just before a wildcard

    Rotating keepers and defenders are amazing!

    Anyone else care to add to this? Would be great to have a 'lessons learnt' article as well.

      With the price rise system change, it was worth making earlier transfers to increase your value rather than wait till the last possible moment

          The previous season it use to be 30,000 ish for the first 0.1, then doubled to around 60,000 the second 0.1 and doubled again for the final 0.1. This year it has been 30,000 for each 0.1. That's why prices have been so volatile this season

      How about this: stop making early transfers after Christmas--if you've played it right so far your TV should be high enough, and there's too much to lose by making the wrong transfer before all the information is avaiable.

      Lesson learnt for me was to "Keep Patience". Quite so often this season i removed the player at wrong time. Took lots of hits in the process as well.

      Also rotating defenders was a nightmare for me. Managed to bench Davies and Clyne for almost all of their clean sheets.

        Yes, rotating keeps and def can be quite frustrating with the Jussi-Bego combo at one point, but I think its still worth keeping in mind.

    hmmm...im seeing alot of sad stories this morning from those disappointedwithf their rank and others who have missed on on their MLs by just a few points..well after watching MOTD highlights the obvious (c) choice to someone of my ability was Lukaku ..i see some even sold him for a hit which was crazy especially if you needed them points towards your ML or rank..if you didnt have Lukaku then Nolan or Rodwell were equally good shouts as both were due..either of them as (c) if you were hovering around the 6000 rank would have easily got you inside 4000 rank if that was your goal

    right my work here is done..im off to tell Kelvin Travers he shouldnt have benched Lukaku if he wanted to win fpl

      Tbh, they didn't drop too many points while they were in the Europa league, and 72 points is never been achieved by anyone outside of top 4.

      They'll look at the first 3 games, i'm sure. Poor defending in the final minutes cost them quite a few points earlier on.

    De Gea
    Zabaleta Mertesacker Luiz Clichy
    Carrick Schneiderlin
    Bale Suarez Mata
    RVP

    Schneiderlin in there as I think at least 3 of your front 6 should have some defensive role and he's the best CM for me other than Carrick.

      Noone with Cazorla. well and truly shocked. Think an amazing addition to the league, given this is players not FPL points list.
      Chelsea = Mata
      City = Silva
      Liverpool = Coutinho
      Everton = Osman
      United = Rooney?
      Tottenham = Nil Holtby one day? Dembele if had to choose.

      my thoughts on each of the big clubs' string pullers. doesn't bode well for Tottenham. Who is United's best ball player sans Rooney/Scholes... Kagawa?

    Enhancements you'd like to see next season on FFS.

    I'll start :d

    - Price Change Projections (some sort of user-friendly of totalfpl/Fiso) to create a true one-stop fantasy shop
    - Member voting for best player per position in GW (i.e. full scout members teams, by top %) Captain poll on steroids
    - Last 5 game avgs list and avg vs GW opponent list (as version of the watchlist)
    - Ability to hide particular posters (hopefully already a part of Home Crowd?)

      backhanded boasting should be called out for what it is. '121 points is this good?? etc'. should be an automatic ban for that. points posting in general (unless asked for by another poster) is really lame especially considering most people have links to their team and points for that week

    Hey guys,

    this was my first season in FPL, as I started from GW 12. I discovered this site a bit later, but was really useful to me - all the articles and all the discussions. As a result I won my ML, reached #13 rank in the "Gameweek 12" league and had 18 successive green arrows for my OR.

    Thank you all for the advises you gave me in the last couple of weeks.
    Next year I will definitely subscribe for membership, so see you in a couple of months..
    (Next year is going to be my first full season of FPL and I'm really excited about it!!!)

    Cheers

    As a long time lurker (& v. occasional poster), it's been really interesting to see how much better people are doing on this site. Anyone hazard a guess as to why?
    Better players migrating to the site?
    Stats becoming more useful?
    Rule tweeks benefiting the hardcore players?
    FFS becoming better?
    All of the above?
    I can remember there being a few consistently good posters in the past (si, sammy c, dick fran dyke) but not as many high ranks as today.
    Any thoughts?

      For me, this site provides mainly information. At times the advice I've listened to has been wrong, at times it's been bang on. But in preparing for DGWs, sniffing out budget prospects and hearing rumours at their first appearance, this is the main place to be.

      I think it's beneficial to see people moaning about players they have had who you haven't had. For example, if Fulham had a nice fixture, people would be suggesting getting Berbatov in. As a Berbatov owner you might be inclined to give an account of how frustrating he can be to own, something you wouldn't understand previously.

      I finished somewhere in the 4000s this year which would never have happened without this site.

          it largely comes down to how much time you spend here I think though. In my first year on here I used to think everyone knew better than me. But if you take the time to filter out the good and bad stuff along with your own thoughts, speaking to people on here can be very useful. Sometimes I'll be all set to do a transfer and everyone will call it completely mental and then when you look at it again, it really is!

      Hard to say, but overall this is probably the best season FFS posters have ever had I think. A few years ago, maybe 09/10 was pretty similar, but the last two seasons the standard was not nearly as high.

      I suppose a lot of players we predicted to do well here based on stats and collective knowledge did well, such as the power 5. The tools+articles on here are also better than ever before.

      I would not take it as a guarantee that we will do as well next season, it's just the nature of the game.

    di canio really has a messiah complex, talking about 7 points from 8 games being a 'miracle! please.. sunderland and a host of other clubs didn't get relegated because some kind of managerial wizardry,it was because beneath them were 2 teams that just werent cut out for this league and one with a defence ozzie ardiles would be proud of. any other season and sunderland, newacstle and possibly vill would be done for. you'd swear sunderland was run like biker grove before he arrived the picture he's painting. I dont by it for a second and he is going to be eally irritating next season. we will all have had are fill by october, guaranteed.

    Another one down then, highs/lows, the usual rigmarole. My worst finish in 4 seasons, lost ML by 4pts, no reason to be upbeat really. I've enjoyed it tho, made more transfers than I normally would, been a bit more punty, tried to do it a bit differently, failed in ranking terms but not in enjoyment. I've decided to look at it this way to make me feel better - 'Failure is success if we learn from it'. I'll still be around to annoy you during the summer btw, cheers one and all 😉

    Choose best starting 11 with only one player from the top 11 teams this season.

    Jussi (WHU)
    Zabaleta (MNC), McAuley (WBA), Mertesacker (ARS), Baines (EVE)
    Bale (TOT), Mata (CHE), Michu (SWA), Snodgrass (NOR)
    RVP (MUN), Suarez (LIV)

    Thoughts?
