As always, our Monday lunchtime regular casts an eye over the lessons learned from the previous round of matches. Chelsea and Arsenal’s contrasting fortunes up front, United and QPR’s tactics and the form of cut-price Fantasy forwards all arrive on the menu…

Monk is proving the doubters wrong…
It’s three wins from three now for the Swans, as the club’s strong start to the season shows no signs of abating. Gylfi Sigurdsson may have earned the majority of our Fantasy attentions, but in Nathan Dyer, the Welsh club possess another of the league’s in-form players who sits second only to his Icelandic team-mate in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield standings. With two clean sheets in their opening three, Swansea have been quick to offer us plenty of options, and aside from the upcoming trip to Chelsea, have the fixtures to keep on delivering.

Costa is a force of nature…
On Friday afternoon, Jose Mourinho reckoned his new forward would be be given a bench role at best for the trip to Everton after sustaining a hamstring problem in training. By Saturday evening, Costa had bagged a brace and played the full 90 minutes in the 6-3 rout at Goodison and caused many to reverse their decision to dispense of his services. In a week where United, City and Liverpool’s premium-priced forwards all failed to deliver, Costa is already looking head and shoulders above any other premium frontline option in terms of consistency, with four goals from his trio of appearances.

Arsenal badly need a striker…
Costa’s immediate impact at Chelsea merely underlines the difference a top quality frontman can make. The Blues have now scored 11 goals from 50 attempts – a conversion rate of 22% is more than double last year’s 10.3%, with the clinical Spain international boosting the assist potential of his team-mates. Arsene Wenger handed Yaya Sanogo the lead role at Leicester but watched on as the youngster failed to score for the 17th appearance in succession. Arsenal are the only side to fire more attempts (51) than Chelsea but have scored just three times – a conversion rate of 9.8% shows just why a replacement, or an upgrade, for the stricken Olivier Giroud is so desperately needed.

Van Gaal won’t give up on 3-4-1-2 just yet…
The arrival of Angel di Maria was expected to spark a change in tactical approach as United made their way to Burnley on Saturday. Instead, the Argentine was handed a central midfield roving role alongside Darren Fletcher, with Louis van Gaal keeping faith in Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie in the advanced berths. With Radamel Falcao on the verge of a loan move amid suggestions that Robin van Persie may require knee surgery, Van Gaal’s attempts to rapidly overhaul his underperforming squad has posed more questions than answers for Fantasy managers so far.

Harry’s not afraid to tinker, though…
Having seen his side battered at the Lane in the previous Gameweek, Harry Redknapp’s decision to make immediate amendments paid off. Out went the previous 3-5-2, with Rio Ferdinand partnering Steven Caulker in the heart of a back-four and Leroy Fer handed the role in “the hole” behind Charlie Austin at home to Sunderland. With the R’s serving up their first shut-out and win of the season under the new system, Redknapp could well be set to continue with a four-man backline once again.

Spurs are still a work in progress….
A pair of wins in the first two Gameweeks, coupled with back-to-back clean sheets, suggested Mauricio Pochettino’s impact at the Lane had been an instant one. Their home dismantling by Liverpool, however, shows Spurs still have plenty to do at both ends of the pitch, with Christian Eriksen owners particularly concerned – without returns in his first three appearances, the Dane was hauled off before the hour mark and is yet to convince his new manager, it seems.

Palace could be a different proposition under Warnock…
Renowned for their defensive solidity under Tony Pulis, the Eagles have looked anything but resilient since the departure of their previous manager. In Neil Warnock’s first match in charge, Palace rolled up to St James’ Park to face a Newcastle side that had failed to score in their opening two fixtures but subsequently shared the spoils in a six-goal thriller with Alan Pardew’s outfit. Our Fantasy attentions may well be set to switch from Julian Speroni and Joel Ward to Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha if the new man in charge can retain his side’s attacking momentum ahead of home clashes with Burnley and Leicester in the next three.

The budget forwards are on form…
Steven Naismith’s strike against Chelsea made it three goals in as many appearances for the Scot, who sits level with Costa on 24 points in the FPL standings. In a weekend that saw the likes of Leonardo Ulloa, Nikica Jelavic and Andreas Weimann notch their second of the season, the number of budget options up front has arguably never been greater, allowing us the chance to free up cash to strengthen elsewhere. With Liverpool set for a superb upcoming schedule and the likely arrival of Falcao bringing him into contention ahead of some tempting fixtures for United, though, the premium forwards could be poised to return to prominence once again.

What would you do to this team?

    Krul (Elliot)
    Azpi/Clyne/Kelly (Chester)(Hutton)
    Siggy/Fab/Sterling/Ramsey/Tadic
    Rooney/Costa (Wood)

    2m ITB 1 FT

I was thinking Kelly or Chester > Moreno

      I would save the FT.

I would also take out Hutton before Chester due to AVL's bad fixtures.

Get Moreno in after next GW then? I was looking at Moore and Duff, but I'm not a fan of playing 4m defenders.

I'm probably going Bruce > Duff this GW, but that's because Bruce doesn't play and I'm cash strapped.

Very few are sold on the LIV defense and clean sheets for them. Other teams with good fixtures are SUN, STO & NEW.

he is slightly overrated but the actual issue is no PL experience and injury prone.

that's not to say it is a bad signing, he is a very big name and will increase moral for the team and the fans. you have done well to get him but it's gonna take Utd a couple of years to be finishing top 4 and title challenging

I'm basically a neutral. I just want to get to the bottom of whether he's going to be worth buying in FPL. So far, I'm yet to be convinced that he's in the elite bracket.

He is overrated. His goal tally is significantly boosted by penalties and he's a 28 year old still recovering from a very significant injury. I'm still very happy that he's going to the club though.

I ain't a United fan but he is definitely not overrated!he is an excellent signing a quality striker and is even better than Costa!if Costa is off and running without any pl experience there is no reason why falcao cant?

BREAKING: Jonathan Obika, a 23-year-old product of Tottenham's academy, has signed a permanent deal with League One Swindon.

The striker has plenty of Football League experience. He's already had loan spells at Yeovil, Millwall, Crystal Palace, Peterborough, Brighton and - almost there - Charlton.

As an Arsenal fan of 25+ years I have to say Arsene Wenger astounds me at times.

If he fails to sign a striker today then he is totally ridiculous. If he thinks ItsANoGo is sufficient cover for Giroud then my god how stupid is he. Even if Giroud was fit he isnt enough for us to make a sustained challenge, why is he so stubborn!!!

I feel your pain. A striker is a priority as well as a CB. Why he does not just sort all this out before the season starts is beyond me. There is no ambition at the club to do well with signings that will make a real differece. Bony seems be the only striker I can think will help us and not be a panic buy. CB - We should take Nastasic, not amazing but good enough cover. DMF - I would of taken Song.

This guy saw it coming: http://www.statsbomb.com/2014/08/epl-2014-15-season-preview-everton-2/

Basically, everyone who thought Martinez would ruin the Everton defence were right, and they were just really, really lucky to keep all those clean sheets last season. Their goal-conceding has now regressed to where it should have been a year ago.

The evidence of these chickens coming home to roost kills all appeal of Everton defence for me.

think jagielka's injuries at the end of last season have played a big part too, he looks a shadow of the defender he was 12months ago

    Hello, all.

This is Saniul, as you all know as the captain of the Oranje team which ended up runners-up in the prestigious FFS World Cup 2014, is back as the manager of the Oranje Hockey team.

Over here, Oranje has become synonymous to success, and we are looking to go one step better this time. We will try to retain most of that successful team at the WC (me, Pompeyfan, HVT and iCon are already in), and also add more quality to the squad.

If you haven't heard of it yet, this is what it is all about. http://uefacouncil.wordpress.com/2014/08/31/ffs-hockey-world-cup-2014-pilot/

Well, if you want to join up, tell me here, or you can mail me at saniul.haque@outlook.com . Open to all, atleast as of now. 😉

P.S. - Yet to choose my (c) and (vc).

Any reason we'd pick one team over another?
      Anyways, here goes...
As for my credentials - OR 764, currently leading The Sarj's League 'Lads on Toure' and won this week's 'Scout Pick's Challenge' 😀 http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/1147293/history/
Pretty settled team, just got Sterling in for Lamela. And that's about it really.
      Cheers!

Trigger as a man of your fantasy stature! I need your advice. I know you like to WC early but it is too early for me with this team?

      Foster
      Caulker Debuchy PVA
      Ramsey Fab Siggy Sterling
      Adebayor Costa Rooney

      Myhill Marney Hutton Moore

I would look to keep 8 of my current players even with a WC!! I know my back 4 is struggling would like you thoughts?

Surely Rooney will drop in price tonight? He's been transferred out almost three times more than Mata in 2nd place, and no doubt if Falcao is similar in price more people will swap them over.

What is the maximum price someone can drop in two weeks?

    1. S.Kuqi
      • 13 Years

      0.3

He's got a massive static ownership that will keep his price afloat.

I think if you're not playing your WC during the international break it's best to hold tight on any impending transfers. I'd look to this weeks Costa saga as inspiration. I held on and reaped the dividend, as I'm sure some others did too. I know price rises/falls dictate transfers a bit but surely it's best to wait?

    Moreno - van Aanholt/Ben Davies - Duff - Dummett - Wisdom
Yaya Toure - Ramsey - Sterling - Eriksen - Sigurdsson

dummett won't play, Toure overpriced, Ericson is not the real deal, Balotelli is a no no. I do like Naismith and Liverpool fixtures.
