We turn our attentions to the player Key Performance Indicator (KPI) statistics once again in our latest members’ article. Having assessed the form of Forwards over the last four Gameweeks compared to the first seven rounds of fixtures late last week, we now turn our attentions to the men in midfield.

For the unfamiliar, these Key Performers Indicator (KPI) tables use a series of key stats to allow our members to track a trend in player performance as a guide to their form. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics, such as minutes per chance, and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain patterns of improvement or decline in these areas. For those unfamiliar, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

the only thing i know of to even guage would be overall ownership and that probably means next to nothing.

Costa has double the ownership overall but only 10% more in the top 150k.

More people will captain Aguero over Costa in the top proportion so I think Aguero is safer and that is who I will go with.

Fair point. It's interesting how shockingly high Costa's ownership is but I would be interested to know how many of those are ghost ships who abandoned their teams between GW3 - GW8 range.

Guess i dont think its that close. But if youre looking for a strategy, you should go with what you think the people behind you will go for if you want to maintain your rank/are protecting a lead. If you want to move up/catch up, then thats the time for differentials.

I don't really get what you're saying here Champ. Usually it's qualified as CDM or central defensive mid...always assumed as being a holding midfield single or pair in front of the back four. Only exception that makes it muddled is when a team like Arsenal plays a 4141. It's normally the 2 in a 4231..can't see a problem with the classification.

Arsenal play 4-2-3-1? More so than most teams, i`d say. Just because your starting position is centrally in the midfield area, doesnt make you a defensive midfielder by default. I get his point totally.

Re-read my post. I clearly stated when Arsenal play 4141. To me, if you play in central midfield, you are the vast majority of the time falling into two categories: in the hole, clearly an attacking position, or protecting the back four as a pair of holding midfielders, to which one of those two has more license to go forward than the other but defending is still their number one job.

And then you have this whole category of players that are called box to box midfielders, im not so sure you understand what this term implies.

traditionally a 4-2-3-1 suggest 2 central mids and an attacking mid or in the hole as you say. No holding player. As opposed to a 4-3-3 which suggests 3 central midfielders one of which will be the holding or defensive midfielder.
As above this position didn't exist before makele. It's a player that's main duty is defending and play between defence and midfield. Before him centre mids were centre mids. They are generally either box to box types or playmakers like fab or xavi. Either way definitely not defensive midfielders

I don't think a box to box midfielder and a defensive midfielder are mutually exclusive qualifications.

One is a cm. The other plays between defence and midfield. By your logic then a player in the hole behind the striker also isn't mutually exclusive from a box to box central midfielder? Because a dm also plays in the hole. It's just his hole is in front of the defence instead of behind the striker.

again i'm talking about ffs not the classification in general. Often on here centre midfielders are referred to as dm's regardless of their actual role in the team. For a prime example see fabregas getting called a dm on the previous page. Kapeesh? πŸ˜€

Yes. Fab's positioning and role is dependent on quality of opposition when they have him and Matic partnered in their 4231.

The 2 in a 4231, to me, are both defensive midfielders. One plays further back than the other, but both players' are playing behind three attacking midfielders in my opinion. Just how I classify them.

Blind is strictly responsible for shielding the back four, more like Matic is. Blind just happens to have no help when they play a 4141 when they may be more vulnerable in general. Fabregas is responsible for supporting Matic when needed, defensively, which is rare for Chelsea since they usually boss the game and he is able to roam further forward leaving Matic back further behind him to protect against counters. Fabregas' job is still to support Matic when necessary and dropping back in the rare instances during a game when it is called for. He has far more defensive responsibilities than Oscar, for example.

I disagree. Oscar/Hazard/Willian/Schurrle etc all have defensive responsibilities, they just have them on different areas of the pitch. Thats why Oscar is Mourinho`s favourite, because hes so damn disciplined. Fabregas`s main job is to support Matic, you say. Yet Fabregas consistently play 10-15 yards above him. Ofcourse when you play a duo in central midfield, even if one of the two has been designated defensive master, the other one occasionally has to help out. That does not, i repeat does not, make Cesc a defensive midfielder. It just doesnt.

Nah see this is the problem Walshy. Nowhere other than FFS is the term "defensive midfielder" used to describe central midfielders. It's a specific role in between midfield and defence also known as the holding role or the makele role. It's a fairly new position in football much like the trequarterista or player "in the hole" and like they play between midfield and attack and are not referred to as a striker or a centre midfielder so too are dm's their own position and not cm's or central defenders.

Many teams play without one. I used to play centre midfield. Sometimes we'd play a holding mid in behind us other times we'd sacrifice him for an extra man in attack and me and the other cm would have to do even more tracking back.

Yeah I guess, but I still maintain that those two holding midfielders jobs are defend first. It's all sort of a gray area I suppose, but regardless of what their positions are called or considered it's easy to just look at the stats, average positioning, etc. to determine whether or not a player is a good or bad fantasy option.

This is the crux of it. I don't think anyone here thinks fab is a makalele but for fpl purposes a mid is either attacking and if not then they are def mids. If you look at the avg position of both fab and matic they are almost identical with matic actually being further forward in gw 10!

dm is generally used to describe the a player in cm playing a more defensive role is all. I would class fab as a dm as he has almost zero goal threat. Sneiderlin and wanyama are more attacking than him

The last two of those are very different players to the first three. Lahm (in the last season and a half), Busquets and Mascherano do little other than tackle.

This is simply not true. Busquets is the best in the world at starting attacks. His short/mid range passing and vision is bettet than anyone in the entire world. Mascherano id agree is somewhat of a tacklebot.

Alonso isnt different, hes just complete.

When I said do little other than tackle, I omitted that they obviously pass the ball short very well.

If you think his mid range passing and vision is better than anyone in the entire world, I'll have some of what you're having.

I guess mine and Guardiola`s opinion on the matter are of no importance to you. Try to watch closely next time you see Barca/Spain, and tell me that you really think Busquets does nothing but tackle and shove the ball 10 yards. Hes really exellent at starting attacks.

And how do you think he starts attacks? By passing the ball 25 yards?

Just because Guardiola said that and you've misinterpreted what he said. that doesn't make you right.

Stuff your holier than thou attitude up where the sun dont shine. Guardiola said and i quote: Sergio has the best vision in the entire team. He sees the pass way before anyone else in the team, including Xavi and Andrès.

Thankfully i never traded much. I played a ton of seasons, build up a lot of squads from different leagues that differentiated from the "normal" teams youd see. To me that was more fun than spending tons of money on the in forms etc.

But the kind of midfielder player who sits in front of the back four and doesn't get forward often isn't likely to be a great fantasy option. So it seems perfectly sensible on a fantasy football site for people to develop a shorthand to identify the more defence-minded midfielders.

When I turn out for eltham mets team we classify the two central midfielders in a 4-2-3-1 as defensive midfielders or holding midfielders. Their role is protect the back four as well as slot in and cover breaks forward by marauding full-backs such as myself and to a lesser extent Leighton baines.

I'm pretty sure I can extrapolate out our team's terminology across all modern 4-2-3-1 formations.

Glad I cleared that one up for you all πŸ™‚

The only advantage of Maria to Sterling is the money you gain imo

i guess at pretty similar returns ovr that set of fixtures, maybe slightly more for Maria. like i said, if you using that extra cash wisely then maybe it make sense. I m just staying away from Pool, playing awfully.

Good discussion on last page, in particular re Fabianski Azpi vs Courtois Naylor
    Cheers guys.

One thing holds me back from getting Azpi is rotation.
It is not appearant now but later on the festive period, Courtois + Naylor is more likely to be nailed on rather than Fabianski + Azpi.

    True?

Although Naylor is 1 card away from suspension so that kinda cancels it out.
And Fabianski might get save points and Azpi baps.

Damn I just talked myself out of it again.

FWIW, the man did not feel like defending vs Pool. Easily to blame for Can's goal, just drove right past him because Fab was on the wing waiting for a counteract.

I sometimes feel, Fab's priorities lie elsewhere. His wants are taking over his needs on the pitch

Dipping into my own inexhaustive supply of made up stats I think it is more like 75%

And actually I think we are trying to apply simple labels to a large variety of roles and even greater variety of players who do it, something which can never be done to everyone's satisfaction.

    I have Pelle Welbeck Aguero.

Thinking of shipping Welbeck out for either Costa, Austin or Bony. Keeping Pelle for the game against Villa at least and monitor.

Costa on 4 yellows, and is owned by almost everyone in my mini league.

Austin is a strong choice and playing well, but can I have 343 with Austin as the first choice? Or revert to 352 with Austin as the bencher.

Bony not doing enough to warrant a place yet, though Swansea have kind fixtures and he's on pens. Maybe Siggy is sufficient?

    1. Joggers Nipple

Did Welbeck to Costa early last week.
Plan Pelle to Austin/Sakho to fund Sanchez coming in.

I'd try to get Costa - did it myself last week. Berahino is my 3rd forward, with 5 midfielders (ADM, Sanchez, Downing, Siggy, Chadli) that can all score. I'm trying to bulk up to make sure adequate coverage when the games start to pile up in December.

As a next step, maybe replace Pelle with Bony due to fixtures.

But Costa essential, especially if most in the mini league have him

I once had 5 playing MF. I probably don't go back to that route again as it was headache with bench decision every week. Team look strong though.

      Same front three here.

If I successfully resist the tempt to buy Costa this week, I plan to ride with them for another week. Then, Welbeck & Pelle out to Costa & Austin. Fab or ADM will be downgraded to fund this move. Keen to keep ADM, as he possesses more goal threat, if he looks okay against Arsenal though.

Currently have Chester, Clyne, Baines, Wisdom, Chambers. Need to lose 0.5 from this group what move would you make. Any ideas appreciated.

CLyne and Baines I think your defence has been sorted for a while there lol

Ship Clyne next week. Need that 0.5 immediately? Ditch Chambers or Chester.

True. Been playing fantasy for 4-5 years now and always seems I'm fighting with my team. Don't know when I have a good thing I guess.

Chester to Yun. You can prob get away with 3 out 4 of Clyne, Wisdom, Baines and Chambers most weeks.

      Or Clyne to Ntaylor

Very similar to mine. Just Hutton instead of Chambers.

Chester to Yun or Clyne to Naylor next week are the options if you need that 0.5

I can go for Yun instead of Caulker but caulkers goal threat tempted me. You think taking Yun and upgrading the keeper is a better choice?

Janmaat and Yun over Caulker and Dummet.

      Krul and Guzan ---> Fabianski/Adrian + 4m
      ADM ---> Oscar/Sterling
      Dummett/Duff ---> Yun
      Caulker/Naylor ---> Azpi

      that's an option i guess

thanks but United cover can be useful i think. and already have Costa so oscar is not necessary. Have to keep an eye on Liverpool's form before taking sterling.

Hard to fault it. But theres just a little bit of extra cash tied up in each player preventing you from upgrading that defence a bit.

I'd go for 2 big hitters in the back (Baines & Azpi) & three ubers that cover each other
AdM I'd swap for Hazard if you can, if not Oscar's a good shout
      Fabi & 4.0

Up front looks great, nice WC side πŸ™‚

Just noticed GW13, 14 and 15 are basically all in the space of a week from Nov 29th to Dec 2nd and coinsides with Southamptons run of bad fixtures.

Three GW's means lots of transfers in that time. Could the value of these southampton guys plummet a lot faster than we usually see?
