In Development – KPI Tables – Preview Movie

The latest addition to our members area is almost ready to go live. The “Key Performance Indicator” tables or “KPI” tables for short, are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or change in performance in players.

For a while now we’ve been looking for a method of using our data to enable our members to assess player form – or at least track some key statistics that can be identified as indicators of form that may influence future Fantasy Football output, whilst also going some way to explain a recent rise or decline.

Firstly, we created tables that track the frequency of key stats or match events which indicate player performance such as “Minutes per shot on target” or “Minutes per touch in the box”. We’ve also included defensive indicators so that users who play Fantasy games where defensive actions come into play – (like Sky Sports and Play On) – can get further guidance from the tables. Indeed, stats such as “Minutes per Block” and “Minutes per Clearance” will immediately help those looking to identify defenders who are set to fare well in the new Fantasy Premier League bonus system.

All these statistics are useful in themselves when you consider that you can sort on any stat and slice the data by a Gameweek range or by home and away matches. However, the key ingredient we’ve added is the ability to create a second comparison table in the background and view tabular results that track the percentage change between the two tables. In this way, we can begin to get values that indicate form or perhaps a change in role and position. What you’ll get are results such as…

“Michu’s frequency of shots in the box increased by 23% when he played at home”

or even…

“Michu’s frequency of shots on target reduced by 38% over the final eight Gameweeks compared to the Gameweeks 1-30.”

These tables and this ability to compare frequency data can be used in a multitude of ways in order to find trends and provide quantitative data on queries such as:

  • Which players improved the most for the key indicators from the 2011/12 season?
  • Which players suffered the biggest decline in the key indicators away from home compared to home matches?
  • Just how much did Juan Mata decline in the key attacking indicators over the last eight Gameweeks compared to the rest of his season?
  • Which of the Chelsea midfield showed improvement over the same window?
  • How was Robin Van Persie’s key indicators affected by Wayne Rooney’s omission from United’s lineup?

Our members will be able to use the numbers produced to help them assess how a change in position affected a player, or even just to study which players, over the “last four Gameweeks”, have improved the most over the key indicators, since last season or earlier in the year. From now on, when we think Michu has dropped off in form, we can check and get percentage values for key stats to assess whether this is really the case and, at the same time, assess if any of his team-mates have benefited.

We’ll be using the KPI tables to generate new members articles and to add further analysis to our regular members articles. We’ll be rolling out our first members article, inspired by the new KPI data, later this week to help guide your initial squad selection.

For now, take a look at the preview movie below to see the tables in action. We hope to have the KPI tables available in our Members Area later this week.

Hey guys, i've seen a lot of people talking up Jay Rodriguez on here as a 3rd striker option. At the moment i'm unconvinced, does anyone have any evidence to show he's better value than Lambert? I'm struggling to be drawn away from Lambert's consistency

Agree. JRod is fine, but Lambert is just involved in too many goals to turn down at £7.5m. First name on my team at that price.

Lambert for sure it seems, Whoscored.com has Rickie Lambert as playing all his games as a centre forward, yet Rodriguez only played as a centre forward 6 out his 24 appearances last season.

Posted this in the deadzone yesterday, though you guys might find it useful. It helped me sort things out.

    Bale, RVP, or both?

Ok since RVP and Bale come at such a premium this year, I have seen multiple ways of integrating them into a team, but three main ways. I have seen hardly any teams not featuring either. It helps me to use price templates to pick a template team which is cash-effective in al three lines and then tinker from there with specific players, and hopefully this clarifies some of the ideas people have been having.

*The examples are not definitive players, just give you idea of what a team with such a template may look like.

    1) Bale & RVP

Before the prices were released earlier today, these two players would have been the first two players on the team sheet, alas, they were given such hefty price tags that this situation was made a struggle. This is the template I've come up with to fit both of them in.

    GK: 2 cheaps (4.5/4.5 -- 5.0 if you've got spare cash)
DEF: 5 cheaps (4.0-5.0, since RVP and Bale are so expensive this frees up a bit more cash)
    MID: BALE, 1 high-range [8.0-10.0], 2 mid-range [6.0-7.5], 1 cheap [4.5/5.0]
FWD: RVP, 1 high-range [7.0-9.5], 1 cheap [4.5-6.5, Anelka is proving popular atm]
    eg: http://imgur.com/7dQR5xo

    2) Bale & no RVP

This is the template I've seen the most thus far and for good reason since Bale is cheaper than RVP and tends to be more explosive in some games. Since the midfield seems to be more flexible this year I chose this particular template, plus with no RVP and a lack of attacking threat in forwards this year more money may need to be spent in the midfield, but I noted a possible change at the bottom.

    GK: 2 cheaps (4.5/4.5 -- 5.0 if you've got spare cash)
DEF: 4 cheap [4.0/4.5 use a rotation plan], 1 high-range [5.5-6.5 (Baines and Vert are too expensive for me this year)]
    MID: BALE, 2 high-range [8.0-10.0], 1 mid-range [6.0-7.5], 1 cheap [4.5/5.0]
FWD: Either 2 high-range [7.0-9.5] and a cheap [4.5-6.5] OR Aguero (only decent really highly priced striker imo), 1 high-range [7.0-9.5] and a cheap [4.5-6.5]
*If you wanted one more high-range defender, you could easily drop a high-range midfielder to a mid-range and then upgrade a cheap defender
    eg: http://imgur.com/Gijhw72

    3) RVP & no Bale

I haven't seen many of these to be honest, but could work quite well with the right players. Also if Bale leaves then this could be what people resort to. I found that this template offers more defensively, but less attacking wise than the others but is still not awful going forward.

GK: 2 cheaps [4.5/4.5 (5.0 if you've got spare cash)]
    DEF: 3 cheaps [4.0/4.5 use a rotation plan], 2 high-range [5.5-6.5]
    MID: 2 high-range [8.0-10.0], 2 mid-range [6.0-7.5], and a cheap [4.5/5.0]
FWD: RVP, 1 high range [7.0-9.5], and a cheap [4.5-6.5]
    eg: http://imgur.com/MrukDBJ

Hope this helps you as much as it did me because writing it out help put my ideas on paper. The reason I put 2 cheap goalies on all of them was personal preference, but that can easily be changed. Happy Tinkering!

Good summary. There is the very real fear that if one explodes there will be no way to fit them both in. But I think I will also be going without RVP

You've spent too much on your defence. There's no need to have two arsenal defenders at all. Absolute suicide going without Bale or RVP in mine (and most people's) opinion. Midfield is good. I think you're a bit weak upfront though. I think 3 WBA players is an overkill. You obviously support them but you have to play with your head instead of your heart. I support Liverpool and am probably going in with just Mignolet. Same issue with your Liverpool selection for me too.

Use google to think of a good team name. I wanted If Bony I Could Michu. But it's 21 characters 🙁

From your current team I would captain Caz, although if you want to be brave try Nolan.

Finally, think about some Chelsea coverage. It's likely they will have a DGW in week 1. Maybe go with Haz or Lamps over Coutinho.

You're a Liverpool fan, and you're leaving out Johnson and Coutinho? 8|

Absolutely. I would prefer a Chelsea player in my midfield for the DGW and I want to fit in Bale and Caz. If I'm going for Mignolet I wouldn't want to double up on a Liverpool defence.

    Team changed a little bit:

    DDG - Speroni

    Baines - Collins - Taylor S - Clyne - Figuerora

    Bale - Mirallas - Redmond - Thomas - Elmohammady

    RVP - Benteke - Altidore

Still no Chelsea or City cover which worries me

    1. How would u get players from those teams in?
    2. Dzeko Yay or nay?
    3. Lukaku yay or nay?
    THANKS

wouldn't want Anelka and Dzeko - some weeks might leave you with 1 striker.

Guys I'm just finishing up an excel sheet of all worthwhile players in the game with a predicted rating out of 10 of how they will do in each fixture for the first 10 weeks.

You can then select 15 of these with a budget and calculate predicted performance totals, taking into account rotation.

Would any of you be interested in me posting it up when its done?
