Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this Thursday evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

This week’s Captain Poll is a two-way tussle for our attentions between Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero. With 41% of the votes cast so far, the Chelsea striker slightly edges it ahead of a home encounter against West Brom – he’s scored six times in five appearances at the Bridge, failing to net just once, and faces a defence that has conceded twice in all but one of the last five Gameweeks.

Aguero has been selected by 38% as Man City prepare for the visit of Swansea. The Argentine has failed to score in two of five appearances in front of his own fans this term, though with nine goals and 57 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game in the last six, he’s the man in form. The Swans have been decent on their travels at the back, though, earning a clean sheet in two of their last three away matches.

Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez could be real differential armband options for the Gameweek ahead. The Chelsea midfielder is seeking his third straight double-figure haul at the Bridge, whilst six goals in his last four underline Sanchez’s form as United’s patched-up rearguard limp into the Emirates.

The avalanche of votes for Costa and Aguero leaves little interest elsewhere. Cesc Fabregas has mustered 1% of votes – mirrored by Southampton’s Graziano Pelle for Monday evening’s trip to Villa. The Italian has failed to score in his last three now, but with the Midlands outfit sweating on the fitness of a number of defenders, Pelle’s owners will be giving him one last chance before the fixtures turn nasty. There’s no doubt he’s better in front of his own fans, though – the summer signing has mustered just one goal and a single assist on the road compared to five goals and three assists at St Mary’s.

What order would you play these 3? Currently on
    Dummett, Chambers, Yun

I reckon that's right. Chambers likely to concede against United, even if he does get attacking points.

I'd switch Yun and Chambers. QPR away defense has been poor but I still don't really rate Newcastle's attack. Think there is a better chance of a clean from him than Chambers.

Cheers both. Cheers Walshy. Yeah, this is my conundrum. Gosh a 0-0 would be nice... ManU vs Newcastle attacks, you may be right here...

I think I know what I should do, but want someone to tell me please:

    Heaton (sto)
Baines (WHU), Duff (sto), Bertrand (avl)
Sanchez (MUN), Chadli (hul), Downing (eve), Hazard WBA),
Aguero (SWA), Austin (new), Costa (WBA),

Guzan (SOU), Diame (TOT), Chambers (MUN), Naylor (mci)

Have I got my subs right? (Two x burnley defnce?) and WHO SHOULD I CAPTAIN?

    Thanks

Revised wild card team. Thoughts/improvements please? I want this wildcard to be a success story, unlike my wildcard last season.

    Guzan /Given
    Baines, Azpi, Naylor, Dummet, Yun
    Hazard, Sanchez, Siggy, Downing, Brady
    Aguero, Costa, Austin

My keeper combo isn't the best looking... But I don't know who else to go for tbh, and don't have the funds for an expensive combo.

Cheers Timbo, yeah, I'm never really one to worry about keepers anyway tbh, their points ceiling is so low that I don't think it warrants heavy investment. Might just stick with Guzan and hope he picks up some cleanies in their run of good fixtures.

Nice one. Prefer Chambers to N Taylor myself.

You're going with Baines then? Also on my WC, haven't owned him yet this season. Not sure whether to get him now, or use a placeholder instead...

      1. Bubz
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 3 months ago

Yeah... I can't really drop him, he's been so good to me over these last weeks. I did think about getting Ivano or Coleman as a placeholder, but then Coleman got injured and I have 3 Chelsea already as I brought in Azpi. Think I'm just going to stick with him through thick and thin. Who knows, he might even play. As for Chambo/Naylor I'm 50/50 on it, but getting naylor lets me get Brady instead of Boyd, which I like.

          • 12 Years
          11 years, 3 months ago

Yeah, Coleman was going to be my man, but now he's a doubt as well - also will have Chelsea defender/Hazard/Costa. Might just go Jagielka and keep the money spare to make the switch. Different story for you though, as you'd lose value on him.

That's fair enough, Brady definitely has the greater attacking potential, think he might still be on penalties when he plays. Personally would prefer the more boring pick who is guaranteed to start.

Not a fan of keeper rotations at all myself.
You could just get Adrian in and a 4M.

      good team

      maybe pantillimon krul ?

maybe oscar + chadli instead of haz + brady so you have the choice (and possible dilemma, but good dilemma) who to play and bench. this might be useful in the festive period with rotation looming

Cheers. I can't see myself dropping Hazard, I've had him this long, it would kill me for him to start banging them in after I sold him on a WC. Plus I like knowing I have the Chelsea peno taker, especially with their run of fixtures coming up.

Given there is a decent chance i may need 2 or more from my bench, who to put 2nd Naylor(mci) or wisdom (che). The mighty Boyd gets that coveted first bench spot.

Naylor ahead of Wisdom. Chelsea have a better chance at 4 goals than City do, I think.

Dont get me wrong, I will be captaining Aguero irrespective, I just think Swansea been defensively better. Also they are better at retaining the ball so might not allow City to impose themselves as normal.

However I also think we are getting to that point in the season where Mou wants to grind out results and keep the team effort to a minimum in the run up to Xmas especially with champs leagues on the horizon.

          Basically a coin toss!

Stick until he gets his 5th YC. I personally think when Chelsea start to tighten up at the back his overall involvement means he will be a great shout for BPS. Slow and steady stream of 5-9 points but any PPG average of over 5 is close to 200 points a season. Not captain material but continually keeps you ticking over.

    Would you play your WC?

    Forster - Gilks
    Baines - Chambers - Wisdom - Coloccini - Duff
Fabregas - Di Maria - Downing - Siggy - Marney
    Costa - Aguero - Pelle

Lot of doubtful starters for this GW, need to ditch Coloccini and also Pelle/Forster's time is running out

I would love to captain Sanchez but two concerns, he has been on a long jolly for the internationals. Also what happens with Welbeck/Giroud starting and what Wenger will do with Sanchez.

With Aguero you know what you get.

I don't see what's changed with him this season and last, apart from Everton winning more penalties, and teammates finishing off his crosses. He was frustrating to own for spells last season. Even as an owner who's enjoyed his scores so far, i wouldn't class him as essential.

His dead-ball striking is not yet secure, and in the groove. That's what.

you make a fair point in that respect but with Everton's home games I'm not sure I can pass him up, even Spurs away next week isn't too bad given Spurs' patchy form post Europa

Baines has had a lot of attacking returns so far. I don't see that drying up myself but I do expect Everton to start keeping more clean sheets. Despite temp injury blip.

He is not worth it. His goal threat has dropped massively. If you want a QPR defender just get Yun.

That sounds like one hell of a ride, potentially resulting in a car crash! Ryan Taylor used to rack up the points a few seasons ago so I wouldn't write him off but it may be too soon for me.

I applaud anyone willing to take the gamble on him though! 😀

What were you looking at? That table proves he's got a decent goal threat.

With a nice run of fixtures he's surely an interesting option at 4.7?

Already used my free transfer to bring g Chadli in for Fabregas allowing me to upgrade Pelle to Costa for a hit should I want to. I've had a few injuries since then so am considering the wildcard. Worth it with this team?

    Begovic, Elliot
    Azpilicueta, Duff, Wisdom, BAINES, COLOCCINI
Sanchez, Di Maria, Sigurdsson Chadli, Jones
    Aguero, Pelle, SAKHO

Can just get 11 out but expect minimal returns from Duff, Wisdom & Jones.
