Having racked up two goals and 14 assists for Ipswich in 2013/14, Aaron Cresswell’s raiding displays persuaded former West Ham boss Sam Allardyce to splash the cash last summer. Immediately nailing down a starting berth, the left-back was one of only four outfield players to feature from start to finish in every one of his side’s league fixtures in the previous campaign.

Cresswell’s displays saw him named as the Hammer of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year in his debut top-tier campaign and his performances were noteworthy enough to attract reported interest from Premier League big boys Manchester City and Chelsea.

Having opted to sign a new five-year deal at West Ham over the last couple of weeks, Cresswell will be keen to push on under new boss Slaven Bilic this time around as the Hammers prepare for their final season at Upton Park…

Key Factors

    • Cresswell’s haul of attacking returns last term (two goal and four assists) was more than respectable yet didn’t quite do justice to his impressive underlying statistics. Comparing his goal threat to fellow defenders, only Branislav Ivanovic (11) fashioned more attempts on target than the Hammers full-back over the course of the previous campaign. Furthermore, Cresswell sat joint top – alongside Seamus Coleman – with regards to shot accuracy (47.4%) among those defenders that fired off at least ten attempts. Turning our attention towards his creative influence, Cresswell served up 34 chances for his team-mates, which was just two shy of Ivanovic’s total and only bettered by three other defenders.

    • Having tallied 129 points last time out, Cresswell has retained his 5.5 starting price. Only three teams (Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United) accrued fewer clean sheets than the Irons (nine) in the previous campaign, so unless Bilic’s arrival engenders a substantial improvement on the defensive front, Cresswell’s value lies in his attacking potential. The fact that the former Ipswich Town man never pushed past the 5.7 mark last season and ended with a mere 5% ownership suggests he could become a differential to watch in that mid-price bracket, should he be overlooked once again.

    • Beyond a flirtation with the top four berths at the halfway point of the season, West Ham’s promising campaign fell apart. Their greatest shortcoming was a severe lack of goals, given that the final 16 league matches of Sam Allardyce’s reign harvested just nine. With Bilic at the helm, however, the Hammers are likely to be adopt a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 set-up – crucially, the former Croatia manager, who’s been stressing the importance of attacking with fluidity and numbers, favours inverted wingers, which should afford Cresswell license to maraud forward and provide the width, thus enhancing his attacking prospects.

    • Notwithstanding a trip to London rivals Arsenal in Gameweek 1, West Ham’s start to the new campaign throws up some enticing match-ups. Visits to Liverpool (Gameweek 4) and Manchester City (Gameweek 6) should also prove stern tests, yet the remaining six fixtures up to Gameweek 9 (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR, sun, cpl) all present decent opportunities for clean sheets.

Pretty Confused with this lot. Any insight would be appreciated
    Butland - Ruddy
    Morgan - Matthews - Mings - Olsson(Norwich) - Angella (waiting on Holebas)
    Mata - Hazard - Walcott - Ritchie - Yacob
    Aguero - Rooney - Wilson
    Triple Bournemouth scares me tbf.

      Deeney over Wilson imo
Aguero may be rested or fatigued at the start of the season given his Copa exploits.

Is it solely to avoid the triple Bournemouth or do you rate Deeney over Wilson?
Aguero's presence is tied to Pelle's press conference before the season begins as well.

Projected Saints line-up, as things stand:

    --------Stekelenburg-------
    Cedric - x* - Fonte - Targett*
    --- Wanyama - Clasie* ---
    -Tadic* --- Mané --- JRod*-
    ----------- Pelle ------------

    - Koeman has confirmed he has targets to replace Toby - Vlaar and Van Dijk linked. Yoshida will not start GW1.
    - Targett's covering for Bertrand for the first 2-3 weeks.
    - Clasie is the most heavily linked CM/DM linked with Saints - both Koeman and Clasie have been quite open publicly about the possibility of a move.
    - Tadic is the one most at threat, from what I can tell. If he hasn't shaken off the groin injuries which haunted the second half of his season and can't arrest his downturn in form, I can see another of our options coming in. Could be JWP (aware of his defensive responsibilities), possibly with Mané switching wide.
    - I expect JRod to start 'out wide', as he did when playing with Lambert, cutting in a lot in the final third. Pelle has good link-up and hold-up skills, like Lambert, so it could again be profitable for JRod. JRod may switch to Pelle's role later in the season.

I don't follow Portuguese football. I've heard he's good going forward but has gaps defensively. But Wanyama is good at covering wandering fullbacks. I think we'll be ok.

You a Saints fan? There will be a Schneiderlin replacement - Koeman has confirmed so. Ward-Prowse is also not strong defensively to play that DM/CM role. It would be Reed, if it was going to be a youngster. Long has failed to nail down a place under Koeman.

Why the hell would we replace Bertrand?

Nice one, Lucy, that helps a lot. I fancy Wanyama to hoover up the BPS in a fair few games. He looks the strongest pick at 4.5m until the season gets underway and see if there are any surprises.

I know you tend to play with 2DM's but he could easily be a box to box mid like Fabregas. Just change the team shape to suit, its often like that with Davis anyway.

He's really not the B2B type. Davis often played as the third midfielder which gave him more freedom.

Clyne & Toby out, both now in questionable defences.

Either Deeney to Sakho or Silva to Hazard with the excess. Would also do Cesc to Yaya if you take up the Silva to Hazard option.

I mean in relation to other strikers in FPL at the price point. They've been really harsh considering he hasn't played for so long.

You could have Sakho, Berahino, Diouf, Deeney, for less money, and Gomis for the same.

It's like picking Bojan, but Bojan is at least priced accordingly at 5.5m.

Too expensive for a player coming back from a major injury into an uncertain formation and tactics for him. May become a bargain if the new tactics and formation get the best out of him though.

We play broadly the same formation as we did when he had his excellent season in 13/14...

Plus he is an unknown quantity under a different Manager.

Not many players remain from the MP era and RK has installed pretty much his own team

It has yet to be proven as to whether RK has any faith in him regardless of how good he is.

Personally I wouldn't touch JR until you know whether he will really start.

    Draft number 2...

    Butland - Ruddy

    Azpilicueta - Cedric - Alderweireld - Francis - Morgan

    Hazard - Yaya - Ozil - Puncheon - Anya

    Costa - Rooney - Wilson

Looks good 😀 What's the deal with rotation in that backline? Do Francis and Morgan cover the tricky fixtures well?

Seen many teams without Aguero and Hazard have people already forgotten last season? Surely we need those two at the start (assuming Aguero will be available) and then downgrade if the unthinkable happens.

Not necessarily to start, no. Many people are planning for the first 4 weeks and then a potential WC. Not saying I'll go without both, if either, but I can see why people would.

I got Baines in with my GW3 wildcard over Ivan and he duly delivered for me just kept him too long but I get your point.

Di maria doubt because of copa america, was benched for 2nd half of the season as well..

Yaya is an enigma to me, had him in so many drafts then always decide to remove him cause I think he's on the downfall.

If ramsey can replicate the form of 2 seasons ago then he'd be great value.

What's the Mata bandwagon already starting ? Scored a scissor kick vs the scousers and since then he's world class again ?

@Daniellevy42 - Why ozil ahead of santi if santi is on pens ?

This may well have been discussed but.....
The all out attack feature this season could well be used to avoid hits on defenders. There will be times when it's not possible to field 3 defs. Rather than use it early to chaise points, I'll be keeping mine with this in mind.
