Liverpool’s breathless start to the summer transfer window showed no sign of abating in the wake of Roberto Firmino’s £29 million switch to Anfield. The former Hoffenheim attacking midfielder – who became Brendan Rodgers’ fifth signing of the close season – recently shot to prominence with Brazil in the Copa America, netting the Selecao’s winner against Venezuela in the group stages of the tournament.

Discussing his move with the Hoffenheim official website, the 23-year-old vowed to nail down a starting berth with the Anfield outfit:

“First and foremost, I’m looking forward to the new challenge and I’m excited to see what the Premier League has to offer. Of course everything will once again be new to me at the start. I’m going to have to get used to a new playing style, but I’ll also get the opportunity to improve my game even further there. Obviously I’d like to establish myself as a starter in my new team and go on to celebrate a lot of success at Liverpool.”

The History

A Brazil native, Firmino was born in Maceio and started out at his local club, CRB (Clube de Regatas Brasil). Five years of training ensued, before he teamed up with Serie B (second tier of Brazilian football) outfit Figueirense in 2008. Firmino broke into the senior side in October 2009 and netted eight goals in 36 appearances during his one full season with the Hurricanes, who earned promotion into the top flight.

Firmino’s exploits in South America alerted a number of suitors across the Atlantic, with Hoffenheim shaking off the competition to land the midfielder on a five-year deal. Firmino joined at the midway point of the 2010/11 season and went on to net three goals in 11 appearances from an advanced central role.

Building on this solid foundation, Firmino tallied 11 goals and seven assists across the subsequent two Bundesliga campaigns. The 2013/14 season served up the greatest riches, though, with the Brazilian starlet amassing an impressive 16 goals in 33 league outings, ranking third in the scoring charts behind Marco Reus (30) and Robert Lewandowski (31). In addition, he registered 12 assists that term and bagged six goals in four cup fixtures.

Firmino’s final campaign at the Rhein-Neckar Arena produced ten goals and 12 assists across 36 appearances in all competitions. His laudable domestic displays were rewarded with a debut senior cap for Brazil in November against Turkey, which swiftly led on to his debut goal against Austria less than a week later. More recently, Firmino guided Brazil through to the quarter-finals of the Copa America with a close-range strike against Venezuela.

The Prospects

With the signing of Danny Ings and now Firmino, Rodgers is clearly searching for a solution to Liverpool’s relative paucity of goals last term, given that the Merseysiders chalked up 49 fewer without Luis Suarez spearheading their attack. Aside from netting 33 times in 73 outings over the past two seasons, the Brazil international also created more chances (138) than any other Bundesliga player over that stretch and directly contributed to 45 goals in his previous 66 appearances – illustrating his creative prowess.

As for his potential role within Rodgers’ set-up, Firmino primarily operated as a traditional number ten at Hoffenheim but was also comfortable lining up on the left flank – with Germany’s U21 star Kevin Volland on the opposing wing – or employing his pace as the central forward in a 4-3-3. It’s worth noting, however, that all seven of his league goals last season arrived when he was deployed in “the hole”.

With Raheem Sterling looking set for pastures new, Firmino is likely to be handed a central support role behind a lone striker, though as we saw last season, that could be in a 3-4-2-1 or 4-2-3-1 formation. The former system could see him twinned with Philippe Coutinho in the advanced roles, with Ings or, potentially, transfer target Christian Benteke spearheading the Reds’ attack until Daniel Sturridge finally recovers from injury.

On that note, Firmino’s impeccable injury record would doubtless have been factored into Liverpool’s thinking in light of Sturridge’s recurring layoffs. The Brazil international has missed just one league outing in each of the past three Bundesliga seasons, which suggests he’s made of sterner stuff that the former Chelsea striker when it comes to avoiding knocks and niggles.

It’s worth noting that Firmino and Coutinho were handed three weeks off due to their recent showings in the Copa America and still have another week or so before they link up with their team-mates.

At 8.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, though, Firmino’s reputation clearly precedes him. Given that Coutinho sets you back 8.0 and Jordan Henderson – who could well be handed spot-kicks – comes in at just 7.0 along with another new signing, James Milner, there are certainly more budget-friendly options in the Liverpool midfield.

Nonetheless, Firmino’s record in Germany suggests he could wreak havoc in his new surrounds and afford the Merseysiders a much-needed spark in the final third. Whilst the Reds’ first three away fixtures look tricky (sto, ars, mun), Rodgers’ side are handed four very obliging home matches (BOU, WHM, NOR, AVL) in the opening seven Gameweeks which more than atone for those road trips and could easily see the new boy hit the ground running.

Anyone managed to create a squad containing Aguero and Costa/Rooney that they're happy with?

yeah, have had to drop out hazard though. I think Costa is adequate cover for chelsea attack

      Azpi - Koscielny - Rose - O'Shea - Targett
      Walcott - Mata - Chadli - Ritchie - Wanyama
      Aguero - Costa - Sakho

The fee is crazy for sterling but you could argue that Utd are taking more of a gamble with their money.

Sweini is 30, ml may take time to adjust and even if he hits the ground running he only has a couple of good years left.

Depay is a gamble also. Ryan babel came to Liverpool for a big free from Dutch football and a big rep but flopped massively. I don't think this will happen to Depay but itcould.

Darmian based on evidence of previous players coming from the Italian league is likely to be a massive fail.

Sterling has been the most creative player from play joint top with hazard in 2014 and city know he can play in the epl so no adjustment required and he is a long term signing and as the best player of his generation covers at home grown spot for the quota.

    Agree/disagree

Schwienstriger cost them only 14m though. Hardly a gamble that sort of money these days. Good signing if he can give them 2 or 3 decent seasons

      1. dribbler
        • 17 Years
        11 years, 5 days ago

but "Schwienstriger" has little or no resale value and may be more likely to spend time injured and/or be replaced in the Utd team in a couple of years at which point he's an expensive reserve

and there's a good chance Sterling will be worth upwards of £40m when city come to sell him

so I'd say there's a good chance Bastian will cost Utd more per season than Sterling will cost City...and that's without factoring in the possibility that Sterling could be sold for a hell of a lot more than £40m

As a United fan I believe Sterling will do very well at City. He's still young and looks good enough to win a starting spot over Navas to make the RW spot his own. He suffered without Suarez last season but with a proper striker to work with this time I expect Sterling will have a very good season.

Schweinsteiger will bring some much needed experience to a young squad. This is extremely important now that United are back in the champions league. Remember, its only a 3 year contract so he was bought with the next 2 years in mind.

Depay/Darmian - Many good players have been bought from those leagues as well, we simply don't know how they will adjust so yes they do represent something of a risk but we'll see.

All good points. I guess my comment was more to do with the incredulity of some people over the fee city are paying while at the same time saying Utd are doing great business.

Fwiw the only one I see really struggling for Utd is Darmian but I really don't see Depay as that much of an upgrade on adm/young and sweini as much of an upgrade on Carrick/herrera we are talking incremental upgrades at most whereas I think sterling is a huge upgrade on navas/nasri imo.

I guess we'll see in time who is doing the best business

Carrick is 34 and ADM is struggling a bit. These are the guys who are essentially being replaced. Might get 1 more good season out of Carrick but then he'll be done. ADM looks likely to be sold to PSG for around 50m

Yeah makes more sense when you out it like that. Are Utd going to be "that" much better than last season with these signings though then? Surely Depay is not an upgrade on adm?

that's right...if they sign Sneiderlin and Schweinsteiger it's still possible that ADM could be a starter in central midfield but it looks more likely that he's going elsewhere

You can't possibly compare Depay & Babel. Depay has already shone in the WC and scored and assisted loads of goals last season. The most Babel ever got in a season for Ajax was 8. More fool Liverpool - he was never as highly rated as Depay is.

Suarez was an out and out forward though right? Maybe Depay is the same but I though he looks more like a winger from what I have seen?

As per below the recent successes of Dutch league players in epl makes it much more likely he will succeed. Still a bigger gamble than sterling though imo although the fee reflects that.

Interesting pompey thanks as usual for the info. It is very hard for us to judge these players coming into the league with just a few international games and some YouTube highlights to go on. I don't understand the love for Dutch footballers at the moment their main league is a very weak league and their international team is awful. Not so long ago Ron Vlaar was being touted as one of the best defenders in the world

Disagree on United Dino. I know you don't rate the Italian league, so your comments on Darmian aren't surprising. Can't really say i've watched him much tbh, but he was apparently superb in the World Cup for Italy. Great engine on him, and can defend and attack better than Rafael/Valencia so an upgrade there.

Agree with Schweinsteiger being a short term signing. Think he likes working with LVG though and that partnership could help him. He won't play every game, and will need to step up physically, but brings so much experience and know-how.

R.E. Depay. can't really say much, so will just refer to pompeyfan. Depay coming at a younger age though isn't he and has plenty of time on his side.

I think Sterling is a great signing for City, but also a good deal for Liverpool.

        All fair comment demi.

Re Darmian I'll obviously reserve judgement but as you say my scepticism comes partly from my disdain for the level of the Italian league but it is more based on the output of the players in the epl that have been signed from there. Hard to disagree that players coming from Italy just don't do it in the epl any more while the epl duds seem to thrive over there.

Disagree with you there Dino. Scweini is top tier and if he gives us 2-3 years of quality, more than enough. Schneider man, proven in the league. Depay is a gamble but one that LVG knows closely so im hopeful.

      Depay comparable to Babel? 😆

There's a difference between hype and performance.

Babel, transfer at 21, 3 seasons, 14 goals and 6 assists in 72 matches in Eredivisie, 6 goals and 3 assists in 28 matches in Uefa Cup and CL (qualifiers included). After promising first season of 7 goals, next two only got him 2 and 5 goals, respectively, just matching his first seasons record in the course of the two latter combined.

Depay, transfer at 21, 4 seasons in Eredivisie, 39 goals and 18 assists in 90 matches in Eredivisie and 8 goals and 7 assists in 24 CL and EL matches (qualifiers included). Steady progress: after promising starts of 3 goals and 1 assists in just 8 appearances and 2 goals and 3 assists in 20 apps at ages of 17 and 18, he scored 12+8 and 22+6 in his last two seasons, and also got 5 of his EL goals in the last season alone.

It's hard to say Babel even was a flop. In fact, despite coming from what at the time was very weak Eredivisie, he continued at about the same or better rate. He scored very nice 5 goals in CL in his first season for Liverpool, and 4 goals and 3 assists in 700 minutes less of PL football than he needed in Eredivisie to score 5+5 in his last season. On second season, too, 3 goals and 1 assist in just 800 minutes, which betters his Eredivisie rate.

As per above the comparison was just between a player who played a similar position (I think Depay played more as a forward?) and arrived for a big fee with a big reputation. I never meant to sound like I thought they were of the same level just that one never did it in epl and the same "could" (I did say I don't think it will) happen to the other also.

To me Utd signings are riskier than cities but it's only an opinion.

Point remains: Babel never made similar performances in Eredivisie as Depay has, and he delivered at about similar, even better rate at Liverpool, so in that sense he definitely was not a flop. Rather got just what they bought. Even if they overpaid.

Seen that Depay is immensely better player, it's fair to pay more money for him too. He would have been in PSG had they not paid that money then.

You're not listening/reading as usual. I never said babel was as good as Depay ffs.

Re babel being a failure pool didn't pay that big fee for what he returned in Dutch league they paid it for his potential to improve which he didn't therefore he was a massive fail.

Nope, I read your point perfectly well, but you refuse to admit that it is rubbish, to the extent that in this last reply you revert to a position of making no point whatsoever, only claiming that a player with a good reputation from a foreign league is a risk. My god, let's not hope anybody takes the risk of buying Messi, he sure has some good reputation! Better invest in the sure value and get Carroll instead!

The point I made remains: your comparison is unfounded, it rests on _not_ knowing anything about the players, just that both come with good reputation, and not making any difference between them. I made the difference based on facts: Babel was just hype, whereas Depay has shown outstanding performances for 2 seasons in a row, with steady progress over 4 seasons now. Depay is not only much better prospect, he doesn't even have to improve from his current stats to be worth the money. If he "flops" in the same way as Babel did at Liverpool, he scores 20-30 goals per season in PL and will be worth every penny.

Where did I compare babel to Depay?

I simply said babel coming for a big fee with a big rep who played in a similar position struggled and the same could happen to Depay which I went on to further state I didn't think would happen to Depay (the reason i dont think it will happen is because I think Depay is far better than babel).

Now get down off your high horse and admit you are a fool who has been misinterpreting everything I have posted.

I know you won't because you are incapable of admitting you are wrong or acknowledging that anyone else's opinion may be viable. I unlike you am happy to have my opinion questioned and happy to admit someone else's point in a discussion as can be seen from this thread alone where I have acknowledged many views and points which are polar opposite to my own

    3. dribbler
      • 17 Years

Hazard + Aguero takes up 60% of your budget (which is £26m)

but because there are no worthwhile defenders or keepers at £4.0m and only Wanyama at £4.5m further forward you could think of it a different way

the cheapest team you could have without being useless might be:

      GK £4.5m (£4.0m)
      DEF £4.5m *5
      MID £5.5m/5.5m/£5.0m/£5.0m (£4.5m)
      ATT £5.5m/£5.0/£5.0

so if you run with my assumptions just to humour me this "minimum cost" team costs £73m and adding Ag+Haz would cost another £13.5m which is 50% of your budget on 2 players

it's all a bit rich for me

First 6 though fixtures though, for exmaple.

              Butland - GW1 LIV, GW2 tot, GW3 nor, GW4 WBA, GW5 ars, GW6 LEI

So realistically you'll want to play your other keeper GW 1, 2 and 5.

              Speroni - GW1 nor, GW2 ARS, GW5 MCI

              Ruddy - GW1 CPL, GW2 sun, GW5 BOU

It's a tight call to be fair, but despite Norwich being weaker at the back, surely you are better going with Ruddy than Speroni?

tier 1 - Eriksen, Lamela, Chadli
Tier 2 - Townsend, Dembele (eriksen replacement at AM on rare occasion)

How come? If we're comparing Chadli and Henderson, the former is much more of a rotation risk as we saw last season, Poch likes to bench him randomly. Henderson is the captain so there's little to no risk that he won't play.

Set pieces is another factor though perhaps Milner's arrival will mean less responsibility for Henderson.

You could argue that Chadli is the more attacking player based on average position and statistics but the game time is the major issue.

Shhh, he is my secret pick. Miles ahead of hendo in the tier for mid priced options in my opinion. Remember, chadli scored as many goals from open play as hazard last season 😉

          Posted by a bloke on another forum - not sure if its far fetched but worth a read at least;

Hazard played 3300 minutes last season, and I'm going to take his minutes as a base point and apply to Chadli's 2400 minutes. I've taken his total points, goals, assists and bonus points and multiplied them with 3300/2400 to get at these results

Chadli's performance if he played as many minutes as Hazard:
          Points - 220
          Goals - 15
          Assists - 8
          Bonus points - 27
Probable price - 11 million (Sanchez scored 207 and is priced the same)
          Actual price - 7 million

I could not believe his price when he came in at 7.0. I was firmly expecting 8.0M at least, and i still would have gone with him based on his assurance of starts. it seems that FPL towers as well as the real life media still under estimate tottenham

            Nah.

            1) fluke conversion rate, easily happens in smaller samples.

            2) G90 rates tend to go seriously up for attacking players who come in as subs, particularly when compared to players who play whole matches who have always the lowest numbers.

= If he played as much as Hazard, he would not keep that rate up, not even nearly.

even so, if he gets 12-13 goals over the season that more than justifies his price tag in my opinion

I still think that at 7m he is a serious option. Obviously wont be contending with Hazard for points but I think the original poster used Hazard to drive the best case scenario.

Just think, with that midfield, there's no need for Rooney to drop deep as to come looking for the ball. He can just stay up top. Could we see a repeat of that season where he scored 27 league goals in 34?

I think RMT is interesting, especially mid-season, when I don't mind referring to it to decide on transfers. But I avoid using it to select my initial squad. I tried to pick an "optimal" squad, and got up to something in the 330s, then put in my actual squad and was around the 310 mark. Basically it massively penalises you for taking any risks, and I like to have at least a couple in there at the start of the season.

Think I've finally got to a first draft I'm relatively happy with, at the moment:

    Butland/Ruddy
    Azpi/Kos/O'Shea/Francis/Morgan

    Aguero/Lukaku/Sakho

What do we think for a first go at it?

I have a feeling that Sakho won't be in my team come GW1 so need to have a proper look at the cheaper strikers as I know little about them. It's not the worst team but I dislike the midfield.

Agreed, especially with the Destro rumours. I think Wilson at B'mouth might be worth a punt, but then not sure I want both him and Ritchie in my team. Albrighton could be a good option but all depends on the new Leicester manager and how the side sets up in pre-season. If O'Neill takes over, Albrighton swinging in crosses and set-pieces could be gold.

it's just theory, but what do you think about option to have 4 heavy hitters (captain options), 2 (mid-price) set piece takers, rotate defenders + rest like this:

    schmeichel-4,0
    Mert - Cedric - Coates - Francis - Burke
    Haz - Cabaye-Ritchie-Sinclar-Flecher
    Aguer-Costa-Rooney

RMT says 256 points in first 6GWs (i don't know if its include captaion choses?) 🙂

Utd's formation could be tricky to predict this season, those picking Mata could be left disappointed as he may be benched some games.

    Schwein, Schneid, Herrera
    ADM Depay
    Rooney

He will play the majority of games but it wouldn't surprise me as i can see a fair bit of rotation.

If Di Maria goes then Mata looks a better prospect.

Could be one of the midfield 3 to miss out too with Di Maria on the left of a back 3 in a 4-3-3

Yeah that's another possibility, just a lot of options Utd have.

Could well be another attaching signing from Utd yet, if they sign someone like Cavani then that could push Rooney back, maybe affecting Mata also.

Do you think signing a striker and moving Rooney back is the answer? Just means we will have Rooney playing oop again with someone in their rightful position missing out.

Think the ideal answer is someone decent as backup for Rooney but that's a tough ask

Nope i don't think it;s the answer, i'd love to see Rooney up front this year, a decent back up would be nice but if not i'd put my trust in Wilson and Hernandez if he's still there. If things go really bad injury wise we could still play Fellaini up front!

But they Way Utd are splashing the cash i wouldn't be surprised to see someone like Cavani come in,

MU are gonna be a great clash of money, Darwinism, and playing time. I so welcome the fallout from the glut.

that BB was a top 10 ... then Bill Burr is laying on that million $ stack in the storage unit and points out to Huell; "the guy hit 10 guys in federal prison, I'm just sayin'". or something like that.

I might save 2.5m and then downgrade a 8.5 mid if Kun makes it to GW4

    4. Jay_
      11 years, 5 days ago

Then you will make 0.1 profit, the problem is if Aguero goes crazy early, I don't think it's worth leaving money itb might as well just save 2ft for gw4 and downgrade a mid for gw4 because United first 3 way better fixtures than City anyway, if that don't work out just wc

i have only seen a couple of teams with danny rose in there, including my own. I understand he is .5 cheaper than toby but i feel for that .5 extra you get a lot of bang. 3 goals, 5 assists in 2400 mins, a better ratio than Ivanovic. Rose improved immensely last season, and i only see him improving. He also has one of the highest clearance success rate and interceptions of any full back in the league, so will likely benefit a lot from the new CBI bonus system. Just one for thought.

For the price of Rose, you can have Mertesacker, Skrtel, Clyne, Cresswell, Fonte, Jagielka and there are countless better options even at 5.0 imo.. Rose isn't even an option for me until Tottenham can prove they can keep clean sheets.

Because of what I said, Spurs (Based on last season) are not a reliable source of clean sheets, which is always where the majority of your defenders points are going to come from. All of the above can keep clean sheets as well as have the chance of attacking points.

          Yes imo.

The failure of the defence is a systemic one imo. They don't have a central midfield (like poch had at saints) and they don't have the same energy to press from the front either. Arguably their defenders are better than what poch had at saints but unless they come up with a better game plan to either play possession football or buy new players to hold midfield and press from the front I don't see anything changing.

They have gone backwards since avb left imo.

Yeah I think he could be a great player in a few years time but in the meantime spurs have to suffer with a non existent midfield. Schneiderlin was playing in league 2 at bentaleb age and was able to be afforded time to learn his trade before adapting to the epl.

As per above I won't be going near spurs defence unless something systemic changes

I've now come to this line up - in an ideal world where Aguero is match fit i'd free up a bit of money from the midfield to have him but here is the current draft:

    Pantilimon

    O'Shea / Mertesacker / Azpilicueta

    Cabaye / Ramsey / Hazard / Mata

    Costa / Wilson / Rooney

    Bench:
    Hamer /Morgan /Baker / Wanyama

Out of 10? See any obvious tweaks?
