With less than four weeks left until the season gets underway, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game for 2015/16 finally opened its doors earlier today.

Whilst Fantasy managers start to build their opening squads, reigning champion Geoff Pryor will be hoping to retain his crown after earning a cool £30,000 for finishing first last season – if you missed our interview with Geoff, click here for the lowdown on his title-winning campaign.

As many of you will know, the Sky Sports game is one that we’ve covered in the past, with our Members area including the relevant bonus point recipients across the positions.

After winning the Best League for each of the last three years, we’re looking forward to defending our title once again. The winner of last season’s Scout League picked up £1,000 for their achievements and we’re hoping to offer prizes for whoever finishes at the summit once again.

We’ll be re-starting our official league soon and will be rolling out a series of articles over the next couple of weeks, looking at the Player List and analysing the best tactical approaches.

Regular contributor d1sable is on board once more to roll out his regular Friday afternoon articles – he clinched yet another top 100 spot in 2015/16 and will be looking to heap the pressure on Geoff at the summit.

We’ve set up a new community article to exclusively deal with Sky Sports Fantasy teams. Those looking to get involved with the discussion should click this link.

Deeney, Naismith (current in team , could have a great start if fit) or jerome

Naismith is not a starter. Deeney and Jerome are unproven in the premier league.

In my opinion he is. Never been a regular starter for long periods in the PL and his scoring record is hardly magical. He has PL experience but he is unproven.

Think unproven is the wrong word tbh, especially when in the same sentence as Deeney who's never played in the PL. Not saying his goals record is any good either but he is an experienced PL striker who knows the league

I dont like the assumtion that because a player is new to the league they are a risk.

Costa and Sanchez faired quite well. Di Maria started well. Cuadrado never got any game time. Okay they are big names and never likely to fail.

Austin, Kane and Sakho faired well.

I realise for every Kane there will be a Soldado but to be wary of Depay or Ritchie is a bit daft. One got 22 goals last season and if he plays should impress, the other got 13 goals, 17 assists and is central to everything a very attacking Bournmouth team does.

"I dont like the assumtion that because a player is new to the league they are a risk"..."It's a baseless assumption"

this is a gambling game...every decision you make carries risk

but costa scored 37 goals in spain and was certain to start as striker for one of the best teams in the country...similarly ADM and Alexis were stars of world football before they came to England...Cuadrado didn't play much so clearly HE WAS A RISK...and by the time you get down to the other players you're saying they "fared well" so big deal

can you say that Ritchie, Deeney etc are or will ever be stars of world football?...can you even say they'll "fare well"...no you can't...all you can say is that they MIGHT do well...which means they're "a risk" according to your terminology

in my opinion they're more risky than the tried and trusted fantasy players you could put in your team if you wanted to

Remember though when Adel Taarabt got QPR promoted and looked a world beater?

I think Richie will struggle initially, even very good creative players (Lallana for example) tend to take at least half a season to acclimatise to the pace of the Premier League.

Foreign players, just avoid imports from the Italian league, defenders aside they struggle big time.

I agree with you to an extent, but I think the "risk" with new players is more to do with their position, chance of starting and risk of being substituted rather than their performance (which is just as much a risk with them as any player in a new season).

      1) If Depay starts up front and looks great then you can transfer him in GW2 or 3 without much, if any, of a price hike and without missing too many points, plus you've obviated the risk of 2) which is...

      2) If Depay doesn't start for United (or starts in a weird position, or cant cope with the league and gets consistently subbed on 59 minutes) then you are faced with a forced transfer out and/or a price drop.

    7. il Brutto
      • 12 Years

It's still safer to start with proven players and make the transfer if needed. Costa, Sanchez and ADM were all established superstars. Kane and Austin weren't worth having at the start of the season. Sakho wasn't a certain starter at the start of the season and anybody hardly knew the player.

    8. Somalion
      • 16 Years
      10 years, 9 months ago

Altidore, 23 goals and 5 assists in the same league as Depay the season before he moved to the PL and flopped. Taarabt, 19 goals and 23 assists the season before he came to the PL from the championship.

To say it is daft to be wary of players from other leagues based on how they score in these leagues is the height of daftness in my opinion. You can take a punt on one and be fine, maybe two, but three, four or higher is very risky.

      1. Somalion
        • 16 Years

My point is not that any players coming from lower leagues or foreign leagues can't cut it. But to load up on these over players who are established in the PL, at least at the very start, can be a bit mental.

Even if he misses GW1, he'll definitely be back for GW2.

Which means anyone wanting to bring him in has their FTs accounted for, which imo is a horrible tactic to start the season with.

All it takes in GW1 is an injury to a player or someone being dropped, and you're screwed.

So as happens every season, the RMT requests are coming in thick and fast and I began to wonder what the “average” RMT would look like at this stage and if a “template” was becoming evident. So, with a couple of slow days at work I decided to look into it. I based my research on 166 RMT posts (using unique ones as far as possible, was hard to keep track sometimes!) and the following 15 players appeared most frequently in RMT posts:

    Schedmeichel Hamer
    Azpilicueta Morgan Cedric O’Shea Francis
    Hazard Wanyam Henderson Ritchie Depay
    Costa Rooney Sakho

    Goalkeepers:
    Players picked at least once:24
Most picked: Schemeichel (17.2%) and Hamer (13.69%).

Was reasonably surprised at the outcome of this and had expected one of the Heavy Hitters to appear higher, the first one comes in ranked 6th and it was Cech. This pairing all but guarantees a starting keeper and should yield a decent save points. Fixtures are reasonable. The study demonstrated a fair bit of faith in Leicester’s backline.

    Defenders
    Players picked at least once:69
    Most picked: Azpilicueta (10.31%) Morgan (8.70%) Cedric (7.70%) O’Shea (6.71%) Francis (6.46%)

Largely what I was expecting to find, with the expectation of Cedric who is unproven in this league, not a guaranteed starter and with a price where other picks may be more secure. Also a fair few of the high scoring defenders from last season were a fair way down the pecking order: Ivanovic 7th, Terry 41st, and Clyne 14th. Given the new bonus point system I had expected more investment in Terry given the stats found in the member’s area. Also very little faith in the Man City back line, with 1 pick for Kompany and 1 for Glichy out of 166 teams.

    Midfield:
    Players picked at least once:57
    Most picked: Hazard (14.69%) Wanyama (8.84%) Henderson (7.72%) Ritchie (7.47%) Depay (6.35%)

Hazard was not a surprise, although I had expected Fabregas (4.23%) to be closer as a cheaper way into Chelsea midfield. Also the faith already being shown in Depay surprised me given that he is new to the league and it is unclear how Man Utd will line up. He was surprisingly favoured over other EPL proven players in his price bracket: Ozil (5.23%), Ramsey (4.98%) and even his Utd team Mate, Mata (3.24%)

Other players who scored well last season and not getting much RMT love: Sanchez (0.50%) Silva (2.86%) and Cazorla (1.37%).

    Forwards:
    Players picked at least once:28
Most picked: Costa (15.51%) Rooney (12.92%) Sakho (12.72%)

Not overly surprised about the first 2, Sakho in third was however, although Aguero was nipping at his heals with 12.33%.

Other players who scored well last season received:
    Kane (7.55%) Pelle (0.60%) Berahino (0.60%)

This team in FPL will leave you with £1.5 ITB.

Should probably do some work now…

Given his form at the end of last season I expect you may be right. In terms of the analysis, he was ranked 8th out of midfielders with 4.36% which still puts him ahead of Fabregas.

Great post, where is Ivanovic, when 60% have voted him the highest scoring defender this upcoming season?!!?.....

Yeh i was very surprised at this, seem Azpi is flavor of the week despite how highly Ivan is rated and his proven ability to provide significant Fantasy Footie returns.

maybe scrap the 3-way and get two pairs and just play Ivan, either way get Mert or Azpi and get a 4.5/5.0 rotation. Ivan on the road still may p'up attacking pts. IMO

Correct me if I'm wrong but the only two pairs of teams that have a 30 week+ H/A rotation and have two nailed on 4.5 defenders are WAT/BOU and NEW/SUN. In light of this is O'Shea/Coloccini not a good choice for two 4.5 defs?

Could be some decent options at Liverpool these year. Seriously tempted by Jordan H if he's on penalties?

Tekkers could take them if he comes. I think henderson will do well in UFPL, the one to look out for for me is Ibe

Hendo is on penalties over Lambert and Balotelli who are both arguably better penalty takers than Benteke so seems unlikely that Tekkers would get them straight away.

I think I might actually want Harry Kane in my team. 9.5 is a fair price, central striker for a top 5 challenging team, on pens, scored many goals last season and decent fixtures to start.

Seeing as goalkeepers look likely to benefit this season from bps and Courtois is only 5.5 and last season his and Cechs combined scores totals to 159, surly this is a bit of a bargain? Considering most are spending 9.0 anyway on 2 4.5's.
