Earlier this month, Swansea manager Garry Monk bolstered his attacking options with the capture of Braga centre-forward Eder on a three-year deal. Having plied his trade in the Primeira Liga for the past six seasons, the Portuguese striker was delighted to finally make the switch to the Liberty, after first arriving on the Swans’ radar back in 2012, when Michael Laudrup was in charge:

“I am very happy to have signed with Swansea. It’s a big club and I believe I can progress as a footballer here. The Premier League will be a step up for me, but I’ve played in the European competitions and also for my country so I’ve experienced different levels of the game. Hopefully my team-mates will help me develop and settle in quickly at the club. I can’t wait to meet all of them when I report for pre-season training. Swansea are a solid club who have big ambitions – last season confirmed that – and it’s great for me to be a part of it.”

The History

Born in Guinea-Bissau, Eder emigrated to Portugal at a young age and begun his footballing career at ADC Ademia. The six-foot-three-inch forward earned his senior debut for third-division Portuguese outfit Oliverira Hospital, producing seven goals in 23 appearances before switching to fellow third division club Tourizense, where he amassed 10 goals in 34 outings the following season.

Having cut his teeth in the lower leagues, Eder’s first taste of top-flight football arrived following a move to Academica. Throughout his four seasons with the Primeira Liga side, Eder carded 12 goals and nine assists in 83 league outings and also contributed to Academica’s first Portuguese Cup win since 1939, courtesy of a win over Sporting Lisbon.

Braga then snapped up the Portugal international in the summer of 2012 on a four-year deal. Eder’s first season with Os Arcebispos (The Archbishops) was curtailed by injury when he suffered ligament damage in February. Nonetheless, he still managed to tally an impressive 13 goals and three assists in just 18 league appearances.

Eder made just ten starts the following campaign, registering three goals and two assists. The past season saw the rangy forward handed the most pitch time since his transfer to Braga, harvesting 10 goals and one assist in 28 appearances. In all, Eder notched 26 goals and six assists in 59 league outings during his stay at the Municipal Stadium.

On the international front, Eder made his full debut for Portugal during a 2014 World Cup qualifier back in August 2012. His solitary goal for A Seleccao arrived in a friendly against Italy in June 2015.

The Prospects

Given that Swans boss Garry Monk primarily favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation last term, there doesn’t appear to be a natural role for Eder to fill. Bafetimbi Gomis is sure to retain his lone striker berth – having bagged five goals in his last six appearances of the campaign – while Gylfi Sigurdsson cemented the number ten spot with seven goals and ten assists in the season gone by. On the flanks, new boy Andre Ayew will likely be deployed in his favoured role on the left, while Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge are able servants on either wing.

Having been fielded as a centre-forward in every league appearance he made last season, Eder should serve as a back-up to Gomis in a one-striker formation – particularly when Monk has already referred to Eder as “competition” for the former Lyon frontman:

“Eder is the type of striker we’ve been looking for. He has excellent attributes; strong, quick and technically sound with the ball. He has a good pedigree and is a full international with Portugal. He fits our profile in terms of the players we’ve signed in the last two seasons because he’s young, hungry and eager to prove himself in the Premier League. He has the characteristics we are looking for and will certainly add competition to the striking department. I’m looking forward to seeing him work alongside the likes of Bafe (Gomis) and Marvin (Emnes). And the fact that we’ve got him in early is a bonus.”

Last year, however, Monk adopted a 4-3-1-2 formation on a handful of occasions, and a return to such a system would allow the Portuguese marksman to possibly earn starts in a two-man attack. That being said, Ayew also possess the skill set to partner Gomis up top and could be considered a better foil to the Frenchman in light of his propensity for making runs in behind.

Save for developments in pre-season that suggest he can establish a starting role, Eder – priced at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game – looks like one to steer clear of in the early stages. Currently, Sigurdsson and Ki Sung-yeung are the most popular outfield options for the Swans; both currently sit in 9.1% of teams, with the latter’s eight strikes and 5.5 price tag making him one of the stand-out options in the sub-6.0 midfield bracket. Gomis, meanwhile, is available for only 7.0, and having netted against the likes of Arsenal and City last season, has already highlighted his fixture-proof appeal.

The Swans kick off the 2015/16 campaign with a trip to champions Chelsea, before hosting Manchester United in Gameweek 4. Mercifully, the Welsh club’s other four fixtures (NEW, sun, wat, EVE ) in their opening half-dozen look to be more fertile grounds for their attacking contingent. For now, though, it seems Eder’s time may be restricted to minutes off the bench unless Monk switches systems in order to accommodate a two-man frontline.

Early fixtures look good to pick off a few CS for sure, wanyana and Clasie could work, still early to tell but with Europe this season I'd start with a defender and switch once Europe kicks in.. don't think the squad is big enough to handle it.

Wow really? I think Sakho is miles and miles better than Lovren. But if that move did happen Lovren would be nailed on next to Skrtel and a wonderfully safe 5.0 route into their defense.

Between Sakho always being a dead person and the constant changing of 3 at he back to 4 at the back he didn't settle on anything really. I do anticipate Sakho being picked ahead of Lovren though, myself. I really rate Sakho.

For a Kun draft, that's got good coverage of the big teams. Only change I would make is probably Ivan & Mert > Kosc & Azpi. Or downgrade Fabianski to a 4.5 and upgrade Mert to Kosc. Wenger's already said Gabriel will see more game time this season.

The thing about Aguero is that he is worth 13 million because he is such a reliable and explosive captain. Take that captaincy option away from him and I don't think he is worth that much.

Nobody is going to captain him GW1 or 2 (possibly even 3) which is why I don't think bothered about not bringing him in until at least GW4

People saying "he can come off the bench and score" - so that's what, 5 points? My 4.5 defender has a better chance of scoring more then that.

I just don't like to preplan transfers. Would rather just have him in there. Would be pissed off if I had Rooney as a one game placeholder and he did zilch against spurs

I think I'm going to rely on Walcott, Hazard, Rooney and Costa to do the damage for me. I will most probably bring in Aguero one week after his early season hattrick which I always miss out on

Im in the same boat as you then. I think intially my team looks better set u p without him for Gw1-3. But then again I'd be very scared to go without Aguero. If he's fully fit for GW1 I'll get him I reckon and save myself a transfer. Sub appearance I'll hold out til GW3/4

with Aguero it's always the fear factor given most top managers would have him in a heartbeat when fit. But the captaincy issue is true...which is why i'm looking at a draft without Hazard. Figure I won't captain him over the first few GWs except maybe GW1. But would be more comfortable captaining Costa that game given his stellar record against Swansea.

just the tactics and the way they play is very unimpressive attack-wise. Balotelli, Lambert, even Borino are all decent strikers who scored 10+ goals in previous seasons at other clubs but barely hit 5 between them last season

    Ruddy Rudd
    Azpi Kosc Kaboul/O'Shea Olsson S.Taylor
    Fabregas Ozil Walcott Chadli Anya
    Costa Rooney Sakho

With 0.5 to spare. Considering going Deeney over Sakho to free up 1.0 more of Aguero money.

Looks quite a nice well rounded team but relies on Arsenal and Chelsea starting strong, which they could easily do. I think I'll have 3 Chelsea starting the season too

      1. Shifty
        • 12 Years

I think Arsenal will start strong. I'm liking the comments coming out of the Arsenal camp - players fighting for their places, Wenger saying he's surprised alot of these guys are back having already done some fitness work on holidays etc. The Cech good-vibes are bound to have a knock on effect.

They were electric against Everton over the weekend too (considering it was a friendly). Was at the game.

Chelsea i'm not sure...but if I go without Hazard...I'd want Fabregas and Costa for assurances 😀

        1. Just A Hat

I'm just not sure about Ozil though, would prefer Ramsey - maybe that is because I had Ozil in the last 5-6 gameweeks last season and he got like 1 assist

It depends on how Arsenal sets up without Sanchez the first GW or so. If Ramsey starts with Cazorla in the double pivot like in the Everton game, he might struggle to make an impact but yup, I am not partial to Ozil.

When I dropped Hazard, I realized with the extra 2.5m I could:

        - keep Fabregas who usually starts seasons well and fully expect to continue benefiting from set pieces
        - swap Ozil/Ramsey for explosive Walcott
        - Benteke for Costa (who could benefit from the BPS change) + a captain option

Seems a good trade to me.

I like it quite a bit, mate. Not hugely confident in your 3rd-5th defenders but fine with what you're trying to do. I think Ruddy needs a rotating partner as well. I wouldn't mind something like downgrading Costa, beefing up Chadli, and splashing a mill or so towards defense.

      1. Shifty
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

I have considered downgrading Sakho + Kosc > Deeney + Mert...would have 2 mil in the bank to spread around. But i'm just a bit worried that spreading it around would make it tough to get Aguero in given I would like to keep one of Rooney or Costa to pair with Aguero.

What keepers are you on now Walsh?

        1. Walsh
          • 12 Years

I hate Mert this season, I'd want no part of him and think Koscielny is well worth the extra .5 if you want an Arsenal defender. Can't let Aguero hold you hostage, it will be easy enough to get him in for either Costa or Rooney when you want to I'd just focus on putting out the best team for GW1 you can and deal with him accordingly.

I am on WBA / Ruddy at the moment. Can't see that changing, just a matter of whether the WBA keeper is Myhill or Hennessey.

Yup if I were to rotate keepers, WBA NOR is what i'm looking at as well.

Very hesitant to ditch Kosc as well. Noted on the thoughts re Aguero. You're probably right, we'll start to see the value players when the season kicks off.

Hazard at 55% ownership. Does this mean if he does not start well his price will fall very quickly?

Conversely if he starts well price increases will be gradual?

He may fall in price. But it doesn't matter - you're not going to sell him. Then, when he settles into his usual FPL-leading form, his price will rise again, you'll be leading your league and everyone will be happy. 😉

      My conundrum is whether

      A. Haz and a weak 4th mid like Bolasie/Ritchie will outscore
      B. Silva and Mata.

Silva and Mata, then if it goes pear shaped... Silva/Mata to Hazard and Chadli/Henderson

That's the plan! Hazard's slower rise potential is the clincher for me.

A lot of dead teams, even after a few weeks. They can act as a buttress against price falls.
And since the ownership is so saturated, there is not much room to increase.

Im actually considering using hazard as my fall guy for getting Aguero in. Best of both worlds - have him in just in case he explodes and drop him for Fab if he looks like losing value and also funds Aguero while keeping the rest of my mids solid.

Downside is, I will be short on points if he doesnt do well, but then again, so will everyone else 😛 If he does do well, then just keep him 😀

Even a steady Yaya of pre 13-14 is not too badly priced at 8.5. Tends to start well. Whereas someone like a Depay could contrastly explode or flop, Yaya's steadier but a good placeholder until we have more clarity on the 8.5s in particular.

    1) Krul / Ruddy
    Williams / Francis / Coates / Huth / Koscielny
    Ozil/ Ritchie / Henderson / Mane / Hazard
    Deeney / Kane / Rooney

    2) Krul / Ruddy
    Azpilicueta / Francis / Coates / Huth / Koscielny
    Ozil / Silva / Henderson / Mane / Hazard
    Deeney / Kane / Wilson

I guess it really comes down to:
    1) Williams, Ritchie and Rooney
    or
    2) Azpilicueta, Silva, Wilson

To rotate Ritchie and Deeney or Wilson and Deeney...

Leaning towards 2) over 1), what do you think please?

I'd be happy captaining Walcott (I actually did 3 times last season) but I wouldn't be confident captaining Ozil/Cazorla/Ramsey. That's another good point.

Walcott: 4 starts, 1 double digit week (1 in 4)
Ozil: 21 starts, 5 double digit weeks (approx 1 in 4)

I don't think last season can be used as a good indicator of Walcott's potential as an FPL (captaincy) option. I'd never captain Ozil and I'm sure most on here wouldn't either.

                You'd captain Aguero though right?

Aguero: 29 starts, 6 double digit weeks (approx 1 in 5)
Ozil: 21 starts, 5 double digit weeks (approx 1 in 4)

Why would anyone captain Aguero? His ratio of double digit pointers per starts isn't even better than Ozil. You'd have to be mental to even consider captaining Aguero over Ozil...everyone knows this.

Yeah I was at the stadium where you could see his positioning being far more advanced than all the other mids, usually on the shoulder of the last defender. That's why I switched Ozil to Walcott (even though Ozil scored one and assisted one).

          Fantastic stadium BTW.

Ozil was anonymous - but had a feeling he was given a tad more freedom just because Wenger knew the crowd was there to see him.

Walcott's so good at pulling defenders out of position then blitzing past them to get free. Also now know why Giroud gets his donkey reputation...but he works hard for the team.

Great stadium...first time there, very impressed.

Walcott + an Arsenal 8.5 should be template for me.

Such a tough call but I'm teetering between Santi and Ramsey atm. Ozil has the better positioning and seemingly more secure but relative goal threat can leave a lot to be desired.

Honestly think you're justified in picking any of them.

No he didn't. He was on about having two players for every position, then said Valencia is now injured so he's got a second choice in Darmian. How would a manager say someone is his 1st or 2nd choice when players should be competing for places?

He'll probably end up in there too. My only problem with him is I think I want Costa & Rooney too, and a CRL frontline means no Hazard...

            • 12 Years
            10 years, 4 months ago

I mean no Hazard is just the way to go, so I'm sure you'll see the light regarding that as you continue to tinker and ponder. If you go Costa and Rooney though, Hazard or no Hazard, I'd be loathe to include an 8.0 3rd striker for your 100m squad. Don't think it's worth skimping in defense to accommodate that when there are some strong 7.0 and under forward options.

I meant that pre price release when it was thought he'd be 5.5 I had him in - then after price release he has never been in my team despite the generous 5 pricing... hence splashing .5 onto a sunderland 4.5 gives you lescott instead... sorry yes ive become an addict and had a pre price release team this summer!?

Still think Ivan's attacking returns are well worth 1.0. Any assist or goal and he gets BPS.

With Ivan playing more advanced, with Fab and Matic behind him protecting the back three, Azpi gets less opportunities for attacking returns.
