On the same day that Manchester United announced the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin was also confirmed as a Red Devil. After completing a deal for the combative Frenchman, Louis van Gaal explained the reasons behind his latest acquisition:

“Morgan is a player from the Premier League so he can cope with the Premier League. Our selection was not in balance and I have already mentioned that I want to make the balance with midfielders, so you could expect that I shall buy two holding midfielders. And Morgan Schneiderlin is the type that I think can play in our system and in our philosophy. Manchester United only buy players who can make a contribution for that. We are not buying just for buying.”

The History

Schneiderlin worked his way up the youth ranks at RC Strasbourg, penning his first professional contract in 2005. The French international managed just five appearances with the Alsace club, before being sold to Southampton in the summer of 2008 following Strasbourg’s relegation to the second tier of French football.

The combative midfielder found himself in and out of the line-up during his debut campaign with the Saints, producing zero attacking returns across 23 starts. In the wake of Southampton’s relegation to League One, he cemented a regular berth in the 2009/10 season, serving up one goal and two assists in 37 appearances.

Following the south coast outfit’s promotion back to the Championship for the 2011/12 campaign, Schneiderlin featured in all but four of their league ties, tallying two goals and three assist in 29 starts. A second-place finish gained the Saints entry into the top flight, where the he continued to flourish; having notched five goals and one assist in 36 outings, Schneiderlin was honoured as the Player’s Player and Fans Player of the Year.

In his previous two campaigns at St Mary’s Stadium, he chalked up six goals and three assists over 59 appearances, with ligament injury and a torn abductor muscle restricting him to 24 starts in the 2014/15 season.

Schneiderlin made his debut for France’s senior squad on June 8, 2014 in an 8-0 friendly win against Jamaica. Less than three weeks later, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps started him in a World Cup group clash against Ecuador. In all, Schneiderlin has earned nine caps on the international stage but is yet to score.

The Prospects

Schneiderlin’s arrival at Old Trafford – allied with the recruitment of Bastian Schweinsteiger – has furnished Van Gaal with a wealth of excellent midfield options. Factor in the impressive late-season form of Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, and there is a myriad of viable set-ups that could exploit the Red Devils’ new-found strength.

With Van Gaal likely to operate with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Schneiderlin can be expected to sit in front of the back-four as Van Gaal attempts to bring a better balance to a side that managed just 11 clean sheets in the previous campaign – just one more than relegated pair Hull and Burnley.

In terms of his individual Fantasy worth, Schneiderlin hardly set the world alight with four goals and one assist in 2,186 minutes for Saints last term, yet his 5.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game could entice some investors who are reluctant to invest heavily in United’s premium options.

Surprisingly, Schneiderlin fashioned shots (one per 76.7 minutes) at a similar rate to Mata (73.2 minutes) last year and has wasted no time in settling into his new surrounds, having scored on his United debut last week. In terms of creativity, it’s clear he is no deep-lying playmaker in the mould of Cesc Fabregas – the Frenchman provided just 20 key passes in 26 appearances in 2014/15, though his minutes per key pass (115) was still far quicker than Carrick’s 191.1, for example.

One look at the stats highlights what the new boy will mainly bring to Old Trafford. In his three seasons in the Premier League, Schneiderlin’s ball-winning ability was fundamental to the Saints’ style of play. In 2012/13, where he missed just two matches, he was first amongst Premier League midfielders for attempted tackles (182), successful tackles (108) and interceptions (139), whilst he sat third for successful tackles in each of the last two campaigns (2013/14, with 87 and 2014/15, with 79) despite his pitch time being somewhat restricted due to injury.

It may well be, then, that his determined displays in the centre of the park will boost United’s defensive prospects more than anything else. Given that no Red Devils defender made 30 or more appearances last year, though, many Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Van Gaal’s backline from the off unless the remaining pre-season line-ups suggest greater consistency of selection.

In terms of fixtures, the opening schedule could certainly be a lot kinder for Van Gaal’s troops, though. United play six of last year’s top eight in the first ten Gameweeks, suggesting that Schneiderlin’s defensive duties will be key in the first couple of months. The Frenchman may well struggle to earn our attention if, as expected, he’s mainly employed to break up opposition attacks and provide the platform for Mata, Depay and Wayne Rooney to wreak havoc further up the field.

    Is this balanced enough?

    Myhill Henesse
    Ivan Kosc Cedric Francis Targett
    Mane Sterling Walcott Depay 4.5m
    Costa Benteke Sakho

    No Hazard but means have to get 2.5m from Ivan

        Cheers. Yeah those two are new and all but I prefer Sterling over Silva because of his directness. and Depay seems like an ideal FPL player. Fast, scores a lot and seltish 🙂

            But Costa is there..

            You think Rooney + Cesc is better than Costa + Depay?

            It sounds like coverage but at the beginning of season I'd like to spread my eggs and get the dangerous players from the top teams

      Certainly is. Looks tidy! Think I've commented previously but I would rather spread Kosc around to Francis and Targett and get 2 5.0s and a 4.5 but that is being nitpicky 🙂

      I'd probably risk Mahrez at that price and hope Ranieri sees the truth and plays him weekly. But I like Redmond as a safer option insofar as he will be nailed at least.

    How's this look:

    Schmeichel - Hamer
    Fonte - O'Shea - Huth - Francis - Bassong
    Hazard - Walcott - Sterling - Ozil/Cazorla - Wanyama
    Rooney - Kane - Deeney

    Plan on Ozil/Cazorla to Richie, and Rooney to Aguero for GW4.

        Yeah, I keep waffling on that defensive strategy. Their early fixtures work out pretty well but I still don't know. I was initially on Depay instead of Sterling (which freed up 0.5), but I'm starting to warm up to this approach, allow a (yet unknown) cheap middie to rise up early and free up some cash, and upgrade the D when the fixtures for the defenders listed toughen up.

        1. Walsh
          • 12 Years

          They rotate well but you are still relying on clean sheets from two promoted sides, Sunderland, and Leicester. Let that sink in for a minute 🙂 I'm very much of the opinion that you should not be spending free transfers during the season on defenders.

            Interesting. I've taken almost the complete opposite tack the past few seasons and have had good results: I generally latch onto and keep forwards and midfielders who I know, at the end of the season, will be at the top of the points list, and then use my transfers to move in and out cheaper defenders based on form and fixtures. But there's more than one way to skin a cat, right? 🙂

      I like the front line naturally, fun team. downgrading Mane to someone like Hendo or Milner would be the way I'd go. Not a fan of Southampton with more europa league after the way it destroyed everton last season.

      Downgradig Rooney or Benteke could really open up your team though, allowin you to maybe upgrade Mane to Arsenal mid or Fab to Haz depending on which striker you get. The two 4.0 defenders could come back to haunt you, its been the curse that leads to many an opening wildcard especially if your one of your other backs gets injured or rotated early.

        i have benteke and fabregas myself, but with the plan of going benteke ---> sakho after GW1. i don't think chelsea's early fixtures will get them scoring big (although costa does have a good record against swansea) but i do want some coverage, and i'm swayed by fabregas' great price and early form last season, perhaps erroneously. hazard isn't an essential in the ronaldo mode for me, i need to be sure he's firing before i spend that much on him.

      Makes Yoshida that much more of a prospect, to me, since Evans is basically always a dead person.

    Who are folks looking at for Keepers? I have been on Schmeichel for a few weeks now, but am starting to get concerned that clean sheets may be tough to come by this year for Leicster given the loss of Cambiaso and what I read in the Ranieri article on this site about how he has a fairly bad record when it comes to defensive results.

      I really like Panti with how new bps works. He gets loads of saves. If sunderland get a clean sheet, he will most likely be amongst the higher scoring members of the backline. His save points make him pretty fixture proof too

      Premium keepers at just 5.5 are too good to ignore. Going to go with either Cech or Courtois and a back up.

    Schmeichel, Hennessy
    Azpi, Kos, Morgan, Coates, Targett
    Ozil, Depay, Manè, Cabaye, Anya
    Costa, Rooney, Benteke

    1) Schmeichel -> Panti

        Schmeichel, Hennessy
        Azpi, Kos, Morgan, Coates, Targett

      2 depends if you're planning an early wildcard, if yes then i'd definitely keep targett, if no then maybe worth upgrading. otherwise i'd go 3, don't really like cabaye at all; not a good fpl prospect in general and has mediocre fixtures.

      Looks good, but would consider Darmian -> Mertesacker.
      Not quite sure about if Darmian is a starter, and also quite unsure about United defence. Arsenal have better fixtures in the start I think.

      Damian could well play despite Van Gaal's comments. Sure he has been bought, but with van Gaal it is more about how well you played in your last match than what he says...

      Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted an experienced, solid defence at the start of the season.

      Either way, I wouldn't go with Darmian from the get go- we need to see how United's backline will prosper with a season under its belt.

        I love Milner, wish he'd signed for Spurs, but he's a utility midfield. Not nailed on at 'Pool either, gonna shift around, and his goal/assist record is rubbish. Simply put he's good IRL but not IFPL.

      Set pieces for Yaya but i'm simply stumping up the cash for Silva.

      Milner in theory is under priced if he plays more than 75% of the season, however im very sceptical with Rogers and his tinkering. Lots of options for him in midfield

          No, but you would expect him to start while Sanchez is out at minimum

      Walcott. Greater goal threat. Explosive

    Repost:

    My team:

    Ruddy, Butland
    Ivan, Kosc, Williams, Huth, 4.0
    Hazard, Yaya, Ozil, Chadli, Anya
    Costa, JRod, Sakho

    Seems like JRod needs to go (not nailed), but in what manner?

    A) Ivan + Hazard + Jrod ----> Azpi + Fabregas + Rooney
    B) JRod -----> Gomis
    C) Ivan + JRod ---> Azpi + Pelle

    Cheers Guys 🙂

        Swansea's fixtures worry me though, do you still think he will be a good prospect?

        Seems like he won't be nailed though, Koeman said he would be eased in (or something along those lines)
