With the new season now less than two weeks away, our community Hot Topics were full of the latest pre-season information on likely starting XIs and formations. The community discussions also took in the evolution of the Fantasy Premier League game over the years, while our community writers focused on getting the most from our backlines. We look back on the week’s activity, whilst also assessing some of the latest Members area tables and showcasing the array of community competitions being set up ahead of the campaign kick-off.

The Community Articles

Defence was a key issues tackled by our community writers, with Patch making the case for investing more heavily in Fantasy backlines, while Mouldmaster looked at the prospects of a 13.5m three way defensive rotation.

Elsewhere, Saniul offered his view on Brendan Rodgers’ likely set-up as the Liverpool revolution continued apace with the signing of Christian Benteke.

This week saw us bring you a brand new game to the pages of Fantasy Football Scout, as the draft-based Dugout FC earned a shout-out. As it happened, earlier in the week The Cisco Kid underlined the appeal of draft games and leagues.

Finally, our resident team sheet expert Demi delivered this article on the best team forums and Twitter sources for getting the inside track on starting team news straight from the fans and journos.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The pre-season itinerary of many Premier League sides picked up this week, helping to shed some more light on probable starters and formations.

Luckily, many of our resident community team experts were on hand to keep tabs on these matches. Amongst our busy scouts was Do The Van Gaal-Lem Shake, who dropped by to deliver this report on yesterday’s friendly clash between Manchester United and Barcelona. He paid close attention to the evolving partnership between Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, which was something Mark was keen to get the community’s views on earlier in the week.

Aquafresca has also been keeping up to date on United’s pre-season fixtures and drafted this report on the Red Devils’ victory over Club America earlier in the week.

Berbinho’s Forehead’s report on Liverpool’s preparations in Australia is essential reading for those considering drafting in James Milner, while Dusan Citizen has also travelled down under to reveal that Samir Nasri is unlikely to disappear quietly in the face of rotation.

A little closer to home, Bowstring the Carp took an in-depth look at Watford’s away victory over German side Paderborn last weekend.

Pre-season friendly line-ups have also been under the watchful gaze of Couti and the Below5th as he revealed his latest update to his excellent probable starters research.

Another top researcher in the week gone by was Magic Hamster, who has been looking to see how the Rate My Team requests submitted by the community have changed as pre-season fixtures shed more light on favoured players.

Meanwhile, Lucy has used her local knowledge of Southampton to assess the south coast side’s likely starters for the forthcoming season – the essential go-to thread for those considering Ronald Koeman’s charges.

The extent to which pre-season friendlies effect our Fantasy squad selections was discussed by Andy85wsm, who was amongst our moderator and contributor team to help with the daily discussions while I was sunning myself on the Cornish coast this week.

Andy85wsm’s other daily Hot Topics this week included this discussion on how to deal with Sergio Aguero’s likely absence from Gameweek 1’s team sheet, the prospects of success for Christian Benteke at Liverpool, the importance of team balance, which of Arsenal’s many excellent midfield players to choose and the latest players to join the FPL player list this week.

Another FFScout moderator to chip in with our daily hot topic discussions was Ryan, who was interested in the effect of ownership on our squad decisions and whether the price baseline for cheap defenders has been subject to inflation this year.

Elsewhere, Epic Fail sparked this debate on the often used tag of ‘essential’ for players and Wolverine took a look at top tips for gaining a good start.

Understanding the latest rule changes in FPL, namely the introduction of new ‘chips’ to boost captaincy, bench and attacking player points, is going to be key to success this season. Knowing when potential double Gameweeks could fall will be crucial to using these chips well, according to Jairzinho. We also asked what your dream chip would be to help gain an advantage in future seasons.

The introduction of chips is just the latest innovation for FPL over its many years, as we discovered during Skool Daze’s FPL veteran quiz. This brought back happy memories of the days when Everton’s Steve Watson was near essential, while Innsie’s discussion on weird captaincy choices also took at look at Fantasy football’s oddball heroes and villains from the game’s past.

There have been a myriad of strange captaincy choices made by our Scoutcast hosts Mark and Granville over the years. Pukka popped by to see if the community would be able to help in their decision making, particularly with their annual Scoutcast team’s prospects.

The Members Tables

For those looking to assess Arsenal’s attacking options in more detail, Head2headwin has compiled this table of their performance during the final six weeks of last season. Meanwhile, Vougiedipond has created this Missed Opportunities table looking at Premier League stars’ most embarrassing statistics.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There were a raft of tournament organisers on hand to tell us about their leagues and head to head competitions for the community to take part in. Here is a full list of those taking place, which includes Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (FPL code 13343-18364), Hulky Punter’s Bloodbath League (FPL code 168077-145950) and The Sarjeant’s Lads on Toure league (FPL code 1866-7724).

Torres Magic has also published this community article, as a guide to his particular tournament.

Anyone playing the same keeper every week

I am very tempted to go with Hart + £4.5 back up

If you are going to go with a premium option such as hart, then you should just go with a £4.0 benchwarmer as your second keeper

Why does everyone seem to prefer huth over morgan? Purely because of Morgan's match fitness atm? I guess he will be fine at least for GW2...

“Chelsea have Hazard - Man City have Aguero - Barcelona have Messi, Neymar and Suarez. We have to look also for these kind of players."

"Ashley Young had a fantastic season last time, but he is not a Neymar, and we have to compete with that kind of class.”

Not sure Pedro is the answer in that sense then

Without having read the article yet I imagine he means a real world class attacker like other teams have - Hazard, Sanchez, Aguero, etc - a real game changer. Depay has the potential to become that but he's not quite there yet

Not owning Costa against Swansea in particular is scary. Hoping Hazard and a cheeky Wally (c) can claw back against any Costa haul. Also have high hopes for Benteke, think he'll outscore Costa in the short term

Thanks. I really rate Chadli and advised others get him, so putting my money where my mouth is and starting with him. As for Targett, he's just a placeholder. Some 4.0 option should emerge
Regardless I'm planning an early-ish WC and I reckon O'Shea/Huth can cover the 3rd spot until then

Thoughts on this team? out of 10?

    Butland/Ruddy

    Azpilicueta, Mertesacker, Prodl/Francis, 4.0

    Fabregas, Walcott, Yaya, Mata, Henderson

    Costa, Pelle, Deeney

3-5-2? You might want do downgrade Deeney to a 4.5m striker to avoid bench problems. Would also help do Pelle to Benteke, who is a better option than Pelle I think.

      Rest looks good.

3-5-2 until I find a cheap mid in form, then upgrade to Aguero/Hazard as needed.

I dont like Benteke, so I will have to see 2 goals within 3 games before I consider him.

what do you mean bench problems?

If you play 3-5-2, which you will then you may well have a few Deeney points on the bench which will frustrate you.

oh right, I see what you mean, the thing is, I havent seen him play yet, Im happy to have him on the bench and see how it gets on in the premier league. i prefer 5.5 instead of 4.5 incase I want to change him, eg, if wilson hits form and deeney doesnt

I currently don't have any of the following strikers in my team. Speaking in terms of the immediate short-term. I've got Rooney - Pelle - Sakho

    A. Costa:
I'm not sure he's worth 11 million with those 3 starting fixtures in particular

    B. Benteke:
I still think he's a wait and watch for me. He hasn't played a decent pre-season with his new team. We still haven't seen enough to know how he's going to perform IMO.

    C. Kane:
Reckon he's a tad bit overpriced at 9.5. Dipped in form towards the end of last season and didn't do much for the U21s this time around.

What are your thoughts? Should I be looking to get any of the above in?

I think Costa is a good pick, proven FPL player, great record against SWA, and the best placeholder for Kun.

Tekkers is also proven, has some lovely home fixtures, playing for a side that should be decent going forward

Kane is a decent pick too, he was greeat last season

I don't just want to buy Costa for the SWA game. I don't think I would captain for the next 2, and there are strikers with better fixtures than him TBH.

I agree that Benteke is proven. But he's proven in a Villa team that played to his strengths. We still have not seen anything w.r.t how he will fit in and how Liverpool will adapt their play henceforth.

I don't think Costa is sustainable if you plan on bringing in augero at point so I'm with you there. Jane needs to be assessed but Benteke is an interesting prospect for me. He's well priced and playing for a stronger team

Yes Sheikh. Im not too sure Costa will justify being put in a team for the first 3 games if you're going to switch him out for Kun. Unless one plans to do the move right after the first GW. He's proabably the best (c) options for GW1 alone.

    Hello lads

I've just about finished my annual summer creeping and not posting on the forums.

Won't burden anyone with a rmt, but what is all the fuss about mane and Wilson.

Also Morgan out as my 4.5. Who to put in? 🙁

If you had Morgan for Leicester coverage then Huth would be a good straight swap.

Mane a decent price and Southampton have nice fixtures. Don't know much about Wilson.

I played the beta version when it first launched. Was fun but the extra dimension of making sure you squad/captains are split well between Saturday and Sunday games is a ball ache. But kind of what the game is all about!

Why they don't just monetize their main game and allow buy-in leagues at all levels is just beyond me

I'd love to jump in some leagues around the 100+ buy-in level and I'm sure equally many would prefer to spend 5 quid on their main team now that 25 man shite

I've loved the format, you've got 3 or 4 weeks to make changes after the season starts and then it's locked in till the Jan transfer window.
Takes 5 minutes to select your team each week but you must remember to make your transfers after the Saturday game.
I make my transfers on a Sat night when I'm lamenting over my FPL team, I then make last minute changes on the Sunday if I have time, remember or there's ashock in the team line ups.
Well worth it, FPL became my ONLY game but I've found it fun adding this.
