Fixture Analysis – Rotation Pairs – Crystal Palace and Stoke

We roll out the fifth article in our Fixture Rotation series this afternoon. Having cast an eye over Leicester and Swansea, West Brom and Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Watford and Newcastle and Sunderland, we now look at Crystal Palace and Stoke. Crucially, the duo alternate home/away over the entire 38 Gameweeks and, thanks to some kind pricing in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, offer us a number of budget backline options for the season ahead.

THE FIXTURES

Taking a closer look at the schedule and picking the fixture according to difficulty, rather than sticking to the home/away option, we’d be handed 14 home matches (nor, ARS, AVL, WBA, MCI, LEI, BOU, WBA, WHM, WAT, new, liv, SUN, NEW, eve, SOT, CPL, bou, SWA) over the first 19 Gameweeks. This leads us into the latter half of the season, when our second Wildcard will become available.

The downside is that we’d need to square up to one of last season’s top four on at least two occasions in the first 19 Gameweeks. This occurs in Gameweek 2 (Palace host Arsenal and Stoke travel to Spurs) and Gameweek 5 (Palace play at home to City and Stoke visit the Emirates), whilst Gameweek 12 (Palace visit Anfield and Stoke host Chelsea) could also pose problems.

Over the second half of the season, the Palace/Stoke combination would be forced to face only one of last term’s top four; this occurs in Gameweek 22, when the Eagles pay visit to the Etihad and Mark Hughes’ men entertain Arsenal.

Looking at the stats from last term, though, it’s fair to say both teams will need to up their resilience. Stoke mustered a mere nine shut-outs in 2014/15 (five at home and four away), whilst Palace produced only two clean sheets in 18 league outings under Alan Pardew.

Neither side offers a strong alternative rotation partner, though. Palace alternate with Newcastle for 28 outings, whilst Stoke rotate with Sunderland for a similar number of matches.

DEFENCE

Stoke
With Asmir Begovic now gone, Jack Butland has been confirmed as the Potters’ new number one for the season ahead. The former Birmingham City keeper claimed two clean sheets in three appearances towards the end of last season and, priced at just 4.5 FPL game, should be a genuine option for Fantasy managers.

Captain Ryan Shawcross and Erik Pieters both come in at 5.0. After totalling only 92 points last term, Shawcross has dropped down from 5.5, and as the most likely to benefit from the new CBI changes, may still prove worth the outlay. Injuries and rotation meant no other Stoke defender made more than 29 starts in 2014/15, with Pieters looking the next most secure option at left-back. Ironically, both have failed to feature in recent matches due to injury but are expected to be fit for the start of the season.

The right-back berth is up for grabs right now, with Phil Bardsley, Geoff Cameron and new signing Glen Johnson all in contention. Certainly, the former two are kinder on the budget at 4.5 apiece, whereas Johnson arrived from Liverpool with a 5.0 price tag attached. We can only hope one of the cheaper options establishes themselves as a regular over pre-season, with the likes of Philipp Wollscheid, Marc Wilson and Spaniard Marc Muniesa all offering alternatives in Hughes’ defence. Given that no Stoke defender broke the 100-point barrier last time out, though, grabbing their new number one may be the best option.

Crystal Palace
Julian Speroni looks set to continue as the first-choice goalkeeper at Selhurst Park and comes in at a mere 4.5 this time around. The Argentine outscored Scott Dann by 115 points to 105 in 2014/15 yet the latter is priced dearer at 5.0 – making him the costliest Palace backline option.

Dann scored twice and bagged four assists last term and was sixth among all defenders for goal attempts from inside the box (19), due to his aerial threat from set-pieces. Alternatively, Joel Ward is nailed on at right-back for just 4.5 and ended last term just 15 points shy of Dann’s tally. Ward made more successful tackles than any other defender in the previous campaign and will benefit from a change to the BPI in that respect.

Damien Delaney was a regular starter under Pardew last term, though the Palace boss is expected to add to his defensive options, making the centre-half somewhat risky. Pape Souare is yet to fully establish himself at left-back but the new boy will be hoping to cement a regular role in his first full season in the top-flight.

Clearly, then, there’s potential for a 9.0 priced rotation pairing here. Butland/Speroni could prove the safest option, though a Ward/Wollscheid partnership may also prove profitable if the Austrian – who has made his deal with the Britannia club permanent over the summer – can clinch that spot alongside Shawcross.

ATTACKING OPTIONS

Stoke
Jonathan Walters led all Stoke’s midfielders in FPL last season, totaling 125 points thanks to eight goals and six assists. At a price of 6.0, the Republic of Ireland international offers a solid if somewhat unspectacular option for Fantasy managers, but with new signing Joselu perhaps replacing Mame Biram Diouf as the lone striker in Hughes’ preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, the Senegalese attacker may compete with Walters for a place on the right flank, hindering the 31-year-old’s prospects.

Joselu scored eight goals for Hannover in the Bundesliga last season, and standing at six foot three inches tall, looks the ideal target man, although Diouf ended the previous campaign in great form and finished as his side’s top scorer after finding the net on 12 occasions.

With Steven N’Zonzi now departed, Charlie Adam will be hoping to nail down a starting role for the forthcoming campaign. The Scotland international scored five goals and provided three assists in Stoke’s final 12 matches, though with just 15 starts to his name in 2014/15, his 6.0 outlay remains a little risky.

Elsewhere in midfield, Marko Arnautovic (6.0) has bagged an impressive 17 assists over the last two campaigns but, like Adam, has struggled to hold down a regular starting place and was named in the first XI on 20 occasions last year. The Austrian has already netted in pre-season, however, and could finally be set to emerge as a viable mid-price option. Peter Odemwingie is now down to 5.0 after injury restricted him to one start last season. Classified as a midfielder, the former West Brom man produced seven goals and two assists in 2013/14 and could be a real under-the-radar option if he can manage to claw his way back into Hughes’ plans.

Bojan Krkic sets us back just 5.5 but, despite being utilised in the attacking midfield three by Hughes, remains classified as a forward. The Spaniard is stepping up his fitness after missing the final few months of the previous campaign and was his side’s number one spot-kick taker prior to being sidelined.

Crystal Palace
Fantasy managers were spoilt for choice from the Eagles midfield last season, with Yannick Bolasie, Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha all providing great options in the mid-price range. The summer purchase of Yohan Cabaye merely adds to our dilemma as Fantasy managers eye up the Eagles’ chief protagonists under Alan Pardew.

Bolasie and Cabaye are the priciest options at 6.5 apiece. The former thrived largely through his assists, notching 12 in 2014/15, and was occasionally utilised up front by Pardew to provide his side with extra pace through the middle. Cabaye’s arrival is expected to take a share of set-pieces from the slightly cheaper Puncheon (6.0), which may well lead to both cancelling one another out as options. Pardew’s set-up may well dictate how we assess the pair, depending on whether either can nail an advanced support role in a 4-2-3-1.

Zaha, meanwhile, struggled for pitch time during the first part of the season under Neil Warnock but cemented a regular role upon Pardew’s arrival. At just 5.5, he averaged more touches in the box and shots inside the area than both Puncheon and Bolasie under Pardew and could prove the best value here if he can find an end product.

In attack, Glenn Murray enjoyed a purple patch under Pardew, scoring six goals in as many appearances, and comes in at 6.0 this time around – the priciest forward on option at the Selhurst Park club. Whilst the likes of Dwight Gayle, Fraizer Campbell (both 5.5) and Marouane Chamakh (5.0) are all cheaper, Pardew’s penchant for a lone striker system limits our options and may persuade many just to stick to the Eagles midfielders. The imminent arrival of Chelsea’s Patrick Bamford on a season-long loan deal merely clouds the situation further.

Anyone going for Ibe as a 5th midfielder (5.0M)? Apparently he's been on fire pre-season???

Not for me. I don´t think he will get enough game time to justify the 0.5 over other fifth mid options.

Don´t get me wrong, I think he will do well when he plays, but I can´t see myself that lucky that he will start in that particular GW when I need my fifth mid.

Before I'm driven insane by all of the questions like 'Lucy, is x nailed on?', 'Lucy, will x start the season?', 'Lucy, which Saints players are you going for?', 'Lucy, is Yoshida a good pick' (for the record, no he's not) and 'Lucy, will Mané score 15 goals and get 12 assists before breaking his leg in a crazy celebration?', I thought I'd try to answer as many Southampton based FAQs that I've received over the last few weeks, starting at the back and working forward.

If your query isn't answered by this FAQ section, please feel free to ask. But do keep in mind that I will ignore your question, after I've provided a link to this post, if I do believe the answers to your questions lie somewhere in this post.

Disclaimer: These are my educated guesses. I am simply a fan. I do not have inside information or Koeman's phone number. I take no responsibility for your final selection of players.

    Goalkeepers:
Stekelenburg has been brought in to replace Forster while he is injured, on loan from Fulham. Great while he was at Ajax under Koeman (over 50 Dutch caps), not so great now. There's hope that he will recover form while first choice for Koeman.
    Until Forster is fit:
    1. Stekelenburg
    2. Gazzaniga
    3. Davis
Forster is expected to be out until Christmas at the earliest, possibly out until next April. He should not be considered.

RB: Cedric nailed on first choice. He's got several assists and a goal in pre-season thus far, reflecting his attacking abilities. Fast, attacking But generally believed to have defensive frailties. Martina will provide cover for this position. I like Cedric at 5.0

CB: Fonte is team captain and nailed on. His partner is expected to be bought during the transfer window. This could be Virgil Van Dijk, which may mean that like Forster's purchase last season, Saints may be made to wait until after Celtic's Champions League qualifiers. Until a CB is bought - as Koeman and Les Reed have firmly suggested will be the case in interviews and judging by our willingness to bid £14m for Toby, it is likely that Yoshida will be Fonte's partner. Purchasing Yoshida is not advised - he could be dumped at any time, with little warning. Gardos provides further depth in this position.

LB - Bertrand is first choice but is out following knee surgery. He may miss 2-4 weeks and I expect him to be briefly replaced by teenager Matt Targett, 4.0. If you are aware of the risks and plan an early WC, Targett could be a good buy but be aware that the precise length of Bertrand's injury is difficult to accurately predict and he may come back earlier than expected. Approach with caution.
Some have suggested that Martina will play because he has played there in some pre-season friendlies. I believe this to be misleading as it will have been down to a lack of fitness for Targett, who joined training a week later than most of the squad because he was away with England's U21s. I would be surprised if Martina got the nod - he's right footed, has no PL experience, is a natural RB and does not have the same room for development as Targett.

Clean sheets: Lots have predicted us to crash and burn in this department. Indeed, there will be upheaval. However, our CS returns were quite predictable, with a massive bias towards home fixtures. Furthermore, much of our success was down to enhanced defensive organisation - which has more to do with the style of the coach than the players. CS output may well drop, I think that's a realistic expectation, but I think 5.0 defensive options represent decent value.

DM: Wanyama and Clasie are expected to adopt these two positions. Wanyama is a decent 4.5 option and has been known to chip in with the odd goal. Due to his withdrawn position, I don't believe Clasie will be a great FPL asset. He will help sustain Koeman's preference for possession football. Reed, tough tackling youngster, will provide cover in these positions, as will Davis on occasions. I expect Reed to get more minutes than last season as Koeman seems to be a fan and the stats, as Doos will tell you, were great.

The three attacking midfield positions: I expect this to be a fairly fluid situation but broadly JRod-Mané-Tadic.
It may not be that precise line up (different positions possible) but those seem to be the three standout options. I cannot say if they are nailed on but those are the three that I would start and I know Koeman to think a lot of. I may be wrong.
Many have raised doubts about Tadic but groin injuries were a recurrent problem - Koeman has said repeatedly how much of an issue this was for him, as he was unable to shake off injuries and it ultimately finished his season prematurely. There is a good chance that he will return to good form, now that he has confirmed he is fit and healthy.
These three are good options but they may not necessarily start all games as this is an area of the team where competition is hot. Long, Juanmi, JWP, Davis and a host of improving youngsters will see game time. Juanmi needs time to adapt to the physicality of the PL and, due to team balance, Long is unlikely to play in the same team as JRod and Pelle. But they both have the ability attract Koeman's consideration. JWP is a more disciplined midfielder and could offer a lot in tight games, particularly where set pieces are vital and his delivery so good. He will get a decent amount of starts, in my opinion.

ST: Pelle is likely to be nailed on here. JRod has struggled to lead the line in the past and was very successful at playing off a big man in Lambert. Pelle can offer a similar skill set and Pelle's previous relationship with Immers at Feyenoord suggests he can help supply goals, not just score/miss them. This is another area where Long may see game time, particularly when Koeman has enjoyed playing counter attacking football against bigger sides. A combination of JRod, Mané and Long would offer pace and directness. Sam Gallagher, academy product, may get the odd 10 minutes when Pelle tires, as he is a tall and strong centre forward in the Pelle mould.

The penalties: This situation is not quite clear but Tadic and JWP are top candidates. JRod has never taken a penalty for Southampton as he always had to compete with Lambert for those duties. He did take some for Burnley so this is a possibility.

Europa: I don't know how this will affect us or how Koeman will manage his squad. It is undoubtedly an issue for FPL managers. However, I'd suggest it's probably a positive at the very beginning, with players able to hit the ground running. It may well cause more acute problems further down the line when fatigue sets in. With this and the fixtures in mind, Europa shouldn't be a prohibitive issue but one that is carefully considered. Koeman's selection policies may be better illuminated following the home and away fixtures vs Vitesse.

Taking all of this into account, my expected line up for GW1 is this. Please take into account my warnings about Targett and Yoshida.

    Stekelenburg
    Cedric, Fonte, Yoshida**, Targett**
    Wanyama, Clasie
    Tadic, Mané, JRod
    Pelle

That concludes my Saints related ramble. *insert more disclaimers here*

Vlaar wouldn't have helped the situation. Cheap but wouldn't enhance CS output. If he'd played as he did at the end of 14/15, he may well have detracted from the CS prospects.

Nice write up. I've got a hunch that both Yoshida and Targett will start at least the first game of the season.

Yoshida was trusted quite heavily last season and Koeman seems to prefer him ahead of Gardos. Targett is backup to Bertrand so would seem odd bringing in a 3rd LB without Targett being given a chance to see if he can step up.

Hard to find any fault with this Lucy. Your research is impeccable. Gawd knows how insightful you would be if you watched more games live! The one thing I would mention though, is those who just watch Saints on MOTD or on a live TV game is that they dont see how effective and skillful Pelle actually is. He is crucial to the side and when he gets a run of form I expect goals and assists. The donkey tag I guess is due to his sometimes less than clinical finishing but watching him in virtually all games last season i found that was due to our lack of width in the latter part of last season and the restricted space Pelle had to operate in when we didnt stretch teams. This year im predicting Pelle to excel with JRod and Juanmi offering ghe space for Pelle to work in. Cant wait!

      1. Lucy.
        • 10 Years

I like Pelle. 🙂 As you say, he offers a lot to the team and ideal for JRod. But his finishing is infuriating.

Hoping to get to the Vitesse game at St Mary's and enjoy the 7 hour round trip...

Shouldn't Tadic be central and Mane out wide? Those are more like their natural positions. But it could be like what might happen at Man U with Depay central and Mata wide

How do you see the EL fixture on Aug 6 affecting the starting XI on the 9th. At least some rotation I would expect, but which ones?

It depends on the result of the first leg I would think, as to the strength of the team for the second leg. If we have a fairly good lead, I expect him to throw in some rotation for the second leg so he can revert to first choice for GW1. But as I say, it's difficult to predict.

I am sorry that you were driven to do this, but great job.

The downside of being a friendly, popular, and knowledgeable poster with allegiances to a 'smaller' club.

Not bad, but a few comments:

      * Downgrade Courtois to someone like Pantilimon or Fabianski, who rack up more saves and thus more bonus

      * Downgrade Ibe to a 4.5m mid (Wanyama, for example)

      * Use those savings to upgrade Ayew and/or Jerome

Darmian is the second choice for Valencia at RB and unproven at PL. Also Man Utd defender at 5.5... you do realize you can get Mertesacker for that price? Also all the other defenders from promoted teams, are you really expecting clean sheets from them? 5 expensive mids... I hope you're going to field them all every week. FW line is really weak. You are all over the place. 2/10.

Not bad overall. Personally wouldn't double on United. Maybe Mata to Yaya or Hendo/Milner. The latter would free you 1.5m to get a rotating GK pair and still 1.0m left Maybe upgrade Benteke to Kane?

I think you have a little too much money in goalkeepers/defence. I would downgrade downgrade Moreno or Alderweireld, and either do Butland to a 4m or Courtois to Ruddy, who rotates with Courtois, and use the savings to upgrade Walters or a striker

    3. blank
      • 10 Years

Why Bellerin? Debuchy is back. Mertesacker is nailed on the same price. Also downgrade your 5th mid and use thet 0.5m to upgrade Moreno to Skrtel if you want liverpool defender. Also think you should go for 1 premium GK and 4.0 non playing or two 4.5 rotating ones. Latter is better in my opinion.

Interesting. Strong Mid. Forwards are punty though. You should be concerned about not having any of the heavy hitters like Costa, Aguero, Kane and maybe even Rooney in that department. Also hard to upgrade. This could cost you a lot.

All depends how the new signings do (and I'm not sure anyone can predict that). Whilst I've heard of them all, I've seen nothing and know very little of either. There's been plenty of successes and plenty of flops from Belgium/Holland over the last decade or so, so it could go either way.

We still need at least one CB too, probably two.

      1. Camp No No
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

Also depends on what McClaren does with the players who already were there. No way you had a relegation fodder squad last season. There's a ton of talent right there if McClaren wants to use it. Just have to make a good analysis of it all. At the moment seems to me that McClaren is not doing that, though.

        1. CABAYE4
          • 12 Years
          8 years, 10 months ago

Lots of talent but missing a strong core. We had no fit PL standard CF last year, and no fit PL standard CB.

McClaren has addressed CF, added a creative midfielder (3rd priority) and is now apparently about to buy a CB. Looks like a decent analysis to me, it just depends if these players are up to it.

          1. Camp No No
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 10 months ago

The needs are there, alright. Not only did you not have a top level striker, one of them was injured and Rivière "evened his balance" after being bought after an exceptionally strong season by having an exceptionally bad one (in terms of conversion rate). Cissé did the same after his strong start at Newcastle. The truth is, while Rivière would score you more goals next season, neither of them will ever give you consistently the returns that you are thinking of when you field them. Mitrovic may be a one who does.

And you indeed still need that physical, strong CB, who is also, you know, _good_. If you get Mbemba, he could in fact be just that guy. If you then just would still have Yanga-Mbiwa, they could form a really good pair. But you might in fact need two CB's now.

And Wijnaldum was probably a good buy too.

It is not that you haven't bought good players, it is that there are all the signs that you're not using the ones you already bought during last couple of seasons. You just buy the good performers from foreign clubs, and give up on anybody who had bad results in your club last season. That is lack of assessing the players you already have and could use. For example, it would be much beneficial to try and get something out of Rivière and have Cissé fit for a while, before selling them. They sit on big contracts, and few clubs can afford adding much transfer fee to paying those salaries, and then it will just mean that you have to give them away cheaply and watch one being less injured and the other scoring at much higher rate in their new clubs who will have got them very cheaply.

Another example is that McClaren is throwing Cabella out, when it is plain clear that he has the skills and makes the efforts and is committed to the club, but just had exceptionally bad conversion last season (which is a lot about luck, when he has been constantly good before it) and had the chances he created converted with a truly anomalously low rate. This is better case than Rivière and Cissé, because those two will never perform constantly on the top level, whereas Cabella is almost 100% sure to do so. Nothing in his performances indicates that he wouldn't make it really well the next season and he was bought for something like €10M just last summer, so it's just stupid that McClaren is basically giving the guy a way. You will not get much money out of him _now_ - that's for sure. Another season, and you could actually make money with him.

You're deploying Real Madrid's model in smaller scale: buying the top outlier performer of last season, selling whoever didn't have his top season. That is very bad business model, you end up always getting less than what you paid for and losing players for less money they were worth of. And Newcastle just doesn't have Real Madrid's resources to do that bad business, it doesn't work lower in hierarchy, you have to be the apex predator to do that.

          2. Camp No No
            • 10 Years

one more point, this quote from Carver, from Spring:

"This is the biggest summer in the club's recent history. It has to be a clearout. There are people who are not good enough — they know that."

And you're actually doing just that, when it is plain clear that the one who was not good enough was Carver. Most of the players are very fine. You're giving them out for free and buying new unsure ones for a lot of money. Just because your inapt manager was unable to get anything out of them.

Ok, it is true that your squad also had some incredible w*nkers in it because of your transfer policy of buying players who throw their toys to get out of their old clubs, so you shouldn't be surprised when they're just as disloyal to you, but still, there are also many players who could play well if you had an apt manager. You may have now, but you're losing these players just then.

Interesting stats here ranking goalkeepers on the number saves made last season.

    http://www.foxsports.com/soccer/stats?competition=1&season=2014&category=GOALKEEPING&team=0&sort=13

Fabianski, Adrian, Pantilimon and Lloris lead the way amongst the 5m bracket. The highest rated 4.5m GK this year is Guzan.

For those interested in going with Butland, it's worth noting that Begovic only ranked 12th with 87 saves, and didn't compensate owners with clean sheets as Stoke only kept 9 all season.

I think you are ignoring FWs too much even if you are playing 3-5-2. Two strikers from promoted teams never a good idea.

Thoughts on this lot and a little advice?

    Schmeichel - Hennessey

    Ivanovic - Koscielny - Lescott - Yoshida - Taylor

    Hazard - Henderson - Mata/Depay - Walcott - Wanyama/Tettey

    Benteke - Rooney - Deeny

    -

    a) Kane, Targett, Pudil

    b) Benteke, Yoshida, M Richards

Colin Millar retweeted EL PAÍS Deportes
The very reputable El Pais are saying that Real Madrid have not ruled out selling Ramos to sign De Gea in a swap.

    @Millar_Colin 44m44 minutes ago
El Pais say that RM have an agreement with De Gea and they see the only way to appease fans angry over Casillas departure is to sign DDG.

    @Millar_Colin 44m44 minutes ago
El Pais also say that whilst Real Madrid don't want Ramos to leave they recognise he wants out & De Gea now seen as more important to squad

    @Millar_Colin 42m42 minutes ago
Tone of El Pais suggests De Gea/Ramos deals now very likely to happen this summer. Both players have made their minds up and want moves.

    @Millar_Colin 39m39 minutes ago
El Pais say several RM leaders consulted the newspaper directly and all said the RM/Ramos relationship was now 'irreparable'.

    @Millar_Colin 28m28 minutes ago
For context on El Pais - a Spanish newspaper but not a sports one (like Marca, AS, Sport etc) Tends to report fewer rumours & more reliable.

The article in El Pais also states that RM has a contract with De Gea that obliges them to sign him, without specifying when, but they would have to pay him EUR 20 mill if they don´t sign him before 20th August, with another EUR 5 mill due on 1st September.

honestly it's in the best interest of everyone if the deal gets done promptly, even in the next 10 days or so if possible

Sure, but in a negotiation situation it is always good to give the counter-party the impression that you are in no rush to complete the deal. Let the clock run, and they might end up offering 35 mill for Carroll or something....

well if LVG and Woodward are handling the Cillessen deal in the background anyways I suppose it doesn't matter how long they hold out on Real for the best deal for their own interests

I´m sure that there will be limitations on a Cillessen deal if it is contingent on the De Gea deal going through. Ajax won´t wait until deadline day without knowing whether they need to replace him or not.

it's more that he's just reporting what El Pais said and apparently they are fairly reliable because they're not a sports-only paper and so report much fewer rumors
