DugoutFC

Introducing Dugout FC

Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Siggy is a great pick. Always good for goals, assists and BAPs. Like someone else said on here he will outscore a lot of the guys you'll pay £8.5m for.

LOL cant be calm the team is the bizniz 🙂

Siggy is tried and tested, he would have scored more last season but for the injury.

Not worried about the bench fodder. Looks like Targett will play early on then can reassess

Siggy is a bit dodgy in the midfield diamond formation which I can see us seeing more of this year. He's nowhere near the threat that he is while playing 4-2-3-1. Although that said he still has free kicks to his name.

? It's 99% there mate. will probably go Milner and Wanyama and the other 4.0 is bench fodder anyway

no one is 100% yet, lots of factors including preseason form will affect final decisions

Yeah. But we have 15 players. We know they might all change by KO. Might be better 4.5 mid and 4.0 defender options known by then. I've Anya and Steven Taylor with Hennessey as backup keeper. Anya might play, Taylor prob not, Hennesey won't.

I'd go Henderson over Milner, better open play attacking prospect, but there are others in that price range too. Downgrading Pelle could upgrade Targett to a 4.5 and Henderson to Mane.

Palace and Spurs are not known for there solid defensive approach.

2 x 4.0m non playing defenders is too risky.

I have doubts about Walcott game time once Sanchez returns.

Migs will get you more save points.

Azpi will get you more cleanies and, if to be believed, BAPs.

I think Migs and Azpi will outscore Courtois and Clyne over the whole season.

        1. Positively Animal

Yeah, good point about Mignolet. But as both options are one player from Chelsea and one from Liverpool, wouldn't the number of clean sheets be the same...?

Yes, hence my point about the saves and BAPs.

If both events are equal you go for the 2 players who will squeeze the extra points from their respective positions.

Its fair to assume that Liverpool's defence will concede more shots than Chelsea's and so Migs will have more saves to make.

Azpi got 19 BAPs last season. Clyne got 15 but is in a new team now so no one knows how he's going to fare.

Basically, I'd gamble on the busier keeper and the more settled defender, but who's to say that you're conclusion isn't in fact the right one?

I think you need a better midfielder than Herrera in there. I'd suggest downgrading your defence a little, particularly PvA (as you have Pants already) or Toby as the Spurs defence needs to consolidate a bit, before anyone invests in them I think..

Besides, there are better options at 7.0 besides a non-nailed on Herrera.

Who do you think are good 4.5 options for defence? I've been going between hendo, milner and herrera for the 7.0 mid spot, so might go with a different one... I think herrera has the most upside but if he's not nailed prolly not worth the risk.

I don't understand the love for Deeney.

I see people argue that you can't use Depays 22 eredivision goals as evidence he'll do well in the PL, but Deeneys 20+ championship goals = instant PL returns, surely the eredivision is a higher standard than the championship?

Also people say O'shea is a great pick for his PL experience, whereas someone like Prodl is a risk because he's new to the league.

Whereas Defoe is past it, and Deeney is 'about to explode'

    I don't get it?

Highly predicted by who, and on what basis?

Deeney had done it for 3 seasons in a row. The kind of consistency that says he will score goals any time. Plus he is the main forward and also captain so nailed.

Same for Lambert, same for Austin. Most PL clubs don't go shopping in what they see as the Bargain Basement. Ross McCormack, Jordan Rhodes. These guys score goals for fun year after year and while everyone complains about the price of British players they ignore these people. David Moyes always did his shopping from the lower leagues at Everton and look how they turned out.

Stones, Miralles, Garbutt. I'm not saying Deeney will be the greatest player ever, i'm just saying that his consistency of scoring is good at any level and shows he is vital to what the team do.

Deeney is most people's 3rd striker choice so they're not necessarily asking him to get 20 goals this season.

What they like is that he is nailed on, cheap, on pens and will score a few goals for Watford. That's a decent set of positives for a cheap 3rd striker.

I don't have him at the moment but I'm considering him for those very reasons, especially as my 3rd striker at the moment is Vardy and I'm not optimistic now that Ranieri's in charge.

That's a reasonable argument, I just can't get on board with these predictions of the next Charlie Austin.

Championship form rarely translates to PL form.

    4. Pasqualinho
      • 14 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

He's clearly a risk, albeit a cheap one. The problem here is that he's following in the footsteps of Charlie Austin, and while Charlie didn't start last year too well, he still proved to be the bargain striker that allowed us to stock our midfield with big hitters (until Kane came along). But often these type of players are the ones who fuel price drops - we'll get the odd disasters like Sylvain Ebanks-Blake, Rob Earnshaw who seemed to drop 0.1 per week until everyone had got rid of them. Even Charlie Austin dropped 0.3 before he started performing. One thing that Deeney does have in his favour is a tricky first game followed by a good run - this should temper his initial ownership and make people reasonably reluctant to sell for GWs 2 & 3 - and by that time we'll have a better idea of if he's a good buy or not.

      1. HamezMace
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

Again, a nicely reasons argument, considering fixtures, potential price drops - although I expect nothing less from you!

I think this really comes down to my general selection process, as you only get three strikers, and I think like most people all three will always play there is no room for a 'budget' or 'gamble' pick. With my defensive I get 5 players to pick and will only play three, so the gamble isn't as much of a risk.

The price drop is the most conclusive argument for not getting him in at the start, Hamez.

At £5.5m there's nowhere to go if he blanks for the first couple of GW's, Watford look like complete dogs**t and people start selling him en masse. Even a £0.1m drop means a double transfer.

Since most people are looking to wildcard early that in itself may not be an issue, but not everyone wants to use their WC in the first few GW's.

If Deeney makes it apparent early that he's the 2nd coming of 'Stone Cold' then, even if he starts rising in price, its easier to get him if you have a misfiring £6m or £6.5m striker.

I think owners will have a couple of weeks - I can't see all that many selling him if he has a bad 1st GW away at Everton with 2 home games coming up v West Brom and Soton. Of course if Callum Wilson gets a hat-trick v Villa this might change.

Normally FPL Towers tweak a little - last year there seemed to quite a few more 'new' variables to the calculation and no-one managed to completely crack it - so they might rest on their laurels a bit and keep it the same. But I certainly wouldn't bank on it.

I think it depends on if you're looking short or long term. Depay and Wally could be rotation risks and for those reasons...

      Mata, Sterling, Ozil, Azpi.

      1. ralfb
        • 9 Years

Wally is more short term until sanchez comes back. Once he gets rotated, it will be ozil. The manu spot is long term.

Fair enough then i would start with Wally and Depay, but be prepared for them to be dropped, subbed or rotated very quickly.

Will go probably now wally and mata. And wally to ozil as soon he looses regular spot. Keep mata, at least as long he performs ok.

    Thoughts?

    1. Doctor X

Poor defence. Need 1-2 bigger defenders there who are assured of regular CS.
Bolasie and Depay are punts. 1 is fine. 2 is too many IMO and CPL have terrible opening fixtures (Re: Ward and Bolasie).

      1. 1zverGGademN
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

I really can't see any of the GIANTS to get more CS in the opening 5 weeks than Palace and Sunderland so I decided to not invest much money in deff at the start of the season. Afterwards I'm planning to bring in one or two fedds from Chelsea/Arsenal/United.

I also had the same thought on defense. I will observe for few GW, and see how things go, then i will use my wildcard. GW 4 or 5 is about a good time to use one.
This strategy will be a 2 edge sword, either your cheap defend prefail or not. But on the other hand u will got a great attacking force. The only problem is, which of those will score the most and cover up the points from your weak defend (assuming all got 2 pts). If not, then u will be sitting on the high rank in no time.
          Good luck

    Hi lads,

Starting my 4th season this year. I only found out about this website in the last few gameweeks of 14/15 season and now I have the membership. Big up to everyone posting here. You guys are awesome.

Can you please comment on my 2453 draft:

    Schmeichel/Guzan
    Azpi/Koscielny/Yoshida/Francis/Kaboul
    Hazard/Cazorla/Sterling/Mahrez/Grealish
    Rooney/Benteke/Sakho

I think Schmeichel and Guzan rotate well. However, I don't see these two being picked very often.
I will definitely stick with 3x4.5ers in the back line. If Koeman buys another defender I will maybe drop Yoshida. Also, if Kaboul does not start I will probably replace him as well.

Another option is to upgrad Azpi to Ivanovich and downgrade Sakho to Deeney (or another at 5.5). Of course Cazorla/Ozil dilemma is yet to be solved.

I want to have the ability to rotate the team in the first 4-5 weeks until we have a better idea what is going on and I think these players will do the job. Anyway, I will really appreciate your comments. 🙂

    Thoughts on this little lot?

    Butland | Ruddy
    Richards | Mings | Ward | Coloccini | O'Shea
    Hazard | Walcott | Tadic | Mahrez | 4.5M
    Aguero | Rooney | Gomis

    ITB: 0.5M

I realise Aguero won't start, so will work out how to deal with that short-term.

    Schmeichel (Speroni)

    Azp, Williams, Huth (Baker, Yoshida)
    Hazard, Sterling, Mata, Carzorla, Hendo
    Rooney, Deeney (Sakho)

Tempted to put Ozil or Wally in instead of Sterling as Arse scoring a few pre season and thinking they'll get plenty from midfield but then no City players? Take a punt with Depay instead of Mata?
