With the new season now less than two weeks away, our community Hot Topics were full of the latest pre-season information on likely starting XIs and formations. The community discussions also took in the evolution of the Fantasy Premier League game over the years, while our community writers focused on getting the most from our backlines. We look back on the week’s activity, whilst also assessing some of the latest Members area tables and showcasing the array of community competitions being set up ahead of the campaign kick-off.

The Community Articles

Defence was a key issues tackled by our community writers, with Patch making the case for investing more heavily in Fantasy backlines, while Mouldmaster looked at the prospects of a 13.5m three way defensive rotation.

Elsewhere, Saniul offered his view on Brendan Rodgers’ likely set-up as the Liverpool revolution continued apace with the signing of Christian Benteke.

This week saw us bring you a brand new game to the pages of Fantasy Football Scout, as the draft-based Dugout FC earned a shout-out. As it happened, earlier in the week The Cisco Kid underlined the appeal of draft games and leagues.

Finally, our resident team sheet expert Demi delivered this article on the best team forums and Twitter sources for getting the inside track on starting team news straight from the fans and journos.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The pre-season itinerary of many Premier League sides picked up this week, helping to shed some more light on probable starters and formations.

Luckily, many of our resident community team experts were on hand to keep tabs on these matches. Amongst our busy scouts was Do The Van Gaal-Lem Shake, who dropped by to deliver this report on yesterday’s friendly clash between Manchester United and Barcelona. He paid close attention to the evolving partnership between Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, which was something Mark was keen to get the community’s views on earlier in the week.

Aquafresca has also been keeping up to date on United’s pre-season fixtures and drafted this report on the Red Devils’ victory over Club America earlier in the week.

Berbinho’s Forehead’s report on Liverpool’s preparations in Australia is essential reading for those considering drafting in James Milner, while Dusan Citizen has also travelled down under to reveal that Samir Nasri is unlikely to disappear quietly in the face of rotation.

A little closer to home, Bowstring the Carp took an in-depth look at Watford’s away victory over German side Paderborn last weekend.

Pre-season friendly line-ups have also been under the watchful gaze of Couti and the Below5th as he revealed his latest update to his excellent probable starters research.

Another top researcher in the week gone by was Magic Hamster, who has been looking to see how the Rate My Team requests submitted by the community have changed as pre-season fixtures shed more light on favoured players.

Meanwhile, Lucy has used her local knowledge of Southampton to assess the south coast side’s likely starters for the forthcoming season – the essential go-to thread for those considering Ronald Koeman’s charges.

The extent to which pre-season friendlies effect our Fantasy squad selections was discussed by Andy85wsm, who was amongst our moderator and contributor team to help with the daily discussions while I was sunning myself on the Cornish coast this week.

Andy85wsm’s other daily Hot Topics this week included this discussion on how to deal with Sergio Aguero’s likely absence from Gameweek 1’s team sheet, the prospects of success for Christian Benteke at Liverpool, the importance of team balance, which of Arsenal’s many excellent midfield players to choose and the latest players to join the FPL player list this week.

Another FFScout moderator to chip in with our daily hot topic discussions was Ryan, who was interested in the effect of ownership on our squad decisions and whether the price baseline for cheap defenders has been subject to inflation this year.

Elsewhere, Epic Fail sparked this debate on the often used tag of ‘essential’ for players and Wolverine took a look at top tips for gaining a good start.

Understanding the latest rule changes in FPL, namely the introduction of new ‘chips’ to boost captaincy, bench and attacking player points, is going to be key to success this season. Knowing when potential double Gameweeks could fall will be crucial to using these chips well, according to Jairzinho. We also asked what your dream chip would be to help gain an advantage in future seasons.

The introduction of chips is just the latest innovation for FPL over its many years, as we discovered during Skool Daze’s FPL veteran quiz. This brought back happy memories of the days when Everton’s Steve Watson was near essential, while Innsie’s discussion on weird captaincy choices also took at look at Fantasy football’s oddball heroes and villains from the game’s past.

There have been a myriad of strange captaincy choices made by our Scoutcast hosts Mark and Granville over the years. Pukka popped by to see if the community would be able to help in their decision making, particularly with their annual Scoutcast team’s prospects.

The Members Tables

For those looking to assess Arsenal’s attacking options in more detail, Head2headwin has compiled this table of their performance during the final six weeks of last season. Meanwhile, Vougiedipond has created this Missed Opportunities table looking at Premier League stars’ most embarrassing statistics.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There were a raft of tournament organisers on hand to tell us about their leagues and head to head competitions for the community to take part in. Here is a full list of those taking place, which includes Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (FPL code 13343-18364), Hulky Punter’s Bloodbath League (FPL code 168077-145950) and The Sarjeant’s Lads on Toure league (FPL code 1866-7724).

Torres Magic has also published this community article, as a guide to his particular tournament.

A thing that really nags me:

    Agueo +5 = 18 mil.
    or
    Tekkers + Kane = 18 mil.

Using a rule of thumb of 260 pts Aguero and 30 pts for unused sum in the year then if you had Aguero 75% as captain(additional 195pts) . will give you 485 pts.
Tekkers and Kane say 180 pts each and using haz as captain 75% of time (220 x 75% = 165pts the end result would be 525pts.

    What am I missing?

Doesn't work like that though. There will always be injuries to Aguero and he'll be out for a while.

Fair enough so one would revert to something similar to option B. I suppose one has to look at gametime for Aguero.

haha ...you are missing hazard's points (without captain) in the first case that is what you are missing

In Hazard's case I am just using him as an example of captains points from another source than Aguero. My comparison indicates there will be captains points from other sources so one contras the other.

yea in case A-you are just using two players...in case B-you have 3 players which creates the difference in the overall effect...Add Hazard's uncaptained pts to case A to balance it out

Not really. I am using Haz as captain pick instead of aguero as Kane and tekkers may not be captain.

okay i get it the first has aguero x2 ...my bad then but honestly it is more about the transfers /injuries/form etc and keeping a generalised approach throughout the season might not be that helpful

Sure it is. When Aguero gets injured people tfr him out or keep him. Never minf the in out tfr there is price drop consideration as well as losing 50% of price increase points each time he is moved. Don't think I don't follow you though. There are a lot of variables. Later in the year as teams increase in value, premium players are easier to get.

Little thought experiment I found while perusing the Guardian article on Balotelli: would you consider him for a fantasy team if he went to Aston Villa to play under Sherwood, who has rejuvenated two strikers and counting?

Is this team any good for GW1? 3-5-2 formation.

    Ruddy (Butland)

    Mings, Koscielny, Bassong (Oshea, Angella)

    Depay, Hazard, Cazorla, Özil, Ritchie

    Lukaku, Benteke (Sakho).

    Ruddy, Rudd
    Azpi, Merte, O'Shea, Huth, Saylor
    Hazard, Wally, Sterling, Depay, Ozil
    Rooney, Deeney, 4.5

3-5-2, Will probably go 4.5 --> bandwagon and downgrade the mid that isn't playing well / isn't playing 🙂

Like the keepers idea, thinking I may use those keepers too.
Think Depau and Sterling are risks but could pay off. I would want an escape route into a striker who starts off well or equally a midfielder who starts well. I would play safe and trust players who are at the same club before bringing in new signings.

    Repost:

I thought I would take the opportunity of discussing my pre season and early season strategy with you all.

Generally speaking, I usually start my season off very strong and then seem to decline about halfway through, that being said, this advise pertains only to these few weeks before the season gets started.

The MOST important thing to accept is that everyone will have some correct picks and some incorrect picks. This is a fact, you will not get all your picks correct, whether it is the 4.0 Saylor who doesnt end up starting, or the budget forward from a promoted side who doesnt cut it in BPL, or a mid priced mid who gets injured. There is absolutely noway you will get it 100% correct from the get go.

This being said, I always prioritize adaptability in my squad. How do I do this? I make sure I have players in all positions covering all the price points, this way they can easily be swapped our for higher performing players in their brackets.

Lets take the example of my squad (so far)

    -------------------------- Ruddy, Butland ---------------------

---- Ivanovic, Koscielny, Huth, Francis, Oshea ---

--- Walcott, Ozil, Fabregas, Mane, Wanyama ---

    ---------------- Rooney, Benteke, Sakho -----------------

If you look at my team it is pretty balanced (Im going to ignore GKs for now as both of mine are playing keepers)

    I have a premium and almost premium defender (7,6) and 3 budget (4.5, 4.5, 4.5)

My midfield is 9, 9, 8.5, 8 (you might argue that I should have Hazard in there but I believe Fabs will outperform him in the first part of the season)

    Forwards 10.5, 8.5, 6.5

Who am I worried about not having? Hazard, Aguero, Sterling, Silva, Costa.... I could go on all day. Point is I cant have all of them

    BUT

I am able to easily get them all without shifting my budget between positions by too much. Costa and Aguero are an upgrade away from Rooney, Hazard, Silva, Sterling, also an upgrade away from Mid (ie fab to haz and mane to ritchie)

By GW 3 I should have 95% of my team being made up of the highest performing players.

This is the equivalent of being very liquid in the stock market and being able to quickly invest in the best opportunities. Remember, the best and smartest investments are made after they have begun to show success and not before on a whim

🙂 Sorry for the long post

No prob on the long post, if I can Devil's Advo this:
I believe a F-team needs Haz or at least Costa. No offense but your defense is unbalanced.
      Downgrade Kos and Ivan= +1.5
yes you have two rotating keepers but for 9.5 you can get a notch up or Ruddy> Speroni rotates same $'s.
      Francis> Williams rotates w/Huth
      Mert and Toby rotate.
Great attack, and easy transition to Aguero, save up an extra FT. IMO GL

am I nuts for having hutton as a 5th defender? His away fix's seem better than some rotation guys home matches, and I hope not to play him much, but Targett is just good for 1 home match in all likelihood.

I know its early, but I'm in a dilemma as to who to captain???

    A) Hazard
Has always been a captain option and has Swansea at home. What can go wrong?

    B) Costa
An excellent record against the Swans. At home as well; he could explode.

    C) Walcott
With Sanchez out, he is basically guaranteed to start. He also can explode

    D) Lukaku
Watford at home, hat trick in his last pre season match.

Here goes. Appreciate if you could give some feedback on this team.

    Schmeichel (Myhill)
    Smalling, Kos, Fonte (Huth, Yoshida)
    Haz, Ozil,Johnson, Henderson, Mane
    Costa, C.Wilson, Sakho

    Switch between a 3-5-2 and a 3-4-3

Ozil has had a very good preseason.
    Wilson will def surprise
Costa will deliver, but I will switch with Kane
    Francis in for Yoshida perhaps?
