Aston Villa’s summer of restructuring continued on Friday afternoon with the acquisition of striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers. The 26-year-old becomes the club’s ninth new face of the summer transfer window as Tim Sherwood strengthens up front following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Gestede cited the Villains’ attack-minded approach under Sherwood as key to his decision:

”The manager told me I’d bring another dimension to the team because of my size and the way I play. He trusts me and I felt comfortable to sign as I knew he wanted me here. It’s good to be part of his new set-up. He’s still relatively new himself and trying to refresh the team. He’s brought in a lot of new players and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I love the way his teams attack and play on the front foot. For a striker, I’m going to have chances to score goals. That’s all you want.”

The History

Brought up in Essey-les-Nancy, France, Gestede joined FC Metz’ youth academy at the age of 16, penning a professional deal one year later. He played for their B team for the next five years while notching three goals in 28 appearances for the senior outfit. A season-long loan spell to Cannes for the 2009/10 campaign harvested four goals in 22 outings, before Cardiff City snapped him up in the summer of 2011.

Gestede struggled to impart his influence during his debut term with the Bluebirds, bagging just one goal and three assists across 25 appearances (five starts). An injury that summer found him sidelined for the opening two months of the 2012/13 Championship season. Upon his return, Gestede played second fiddle to the likes of Craig Bellamy and Heidar Helguson, mustering a modest haul of five goals and three assists in 27 appearances (five starts).

In an attempt to secure more regular playing time, Gestede joined Blackburn Rovers on loan in November 2013. He then signed a permanent deal with the Lancashire club in January, before going on to record 13 goals and three assists in 27 outings. His fine form carried over to the previous campaign, when he chalked up 20 goals and four assists in 39 appearances, ranking joint-fourth in the league-wide scoring charts.

On the international stage, Gestede represented France U19s on 17 occasions between 2006-08 but never turned out for the senior side. Called up by Benin in 2013, he has since scored three times in six appearances.

The Prospects

Speaking on Gestede’s arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood lauded the 26-year-old for his eye-catching attacking output last term:

“I’ve known about Rudy since he was at Cardiff City and he is a player I’ve always admired. His goalscoring ratio last season was fantastic and he is someone who certainly knows how to find the back of the net. He’s a big, physical striker but he can play and I’m pleased to welcome him to the football club.”

The former Spurs head coach was clearly in the market for an imposing frontman to fill the niche vacated by Christian Benteke, who won more aerial duels (187) than any other frontman in the Premier League last season. Certainly, Gestede looks the ideal replacement –over the last two seasons, no player in the top four levels of English football has netted more goals from headers.

Villa’s wide men could well prosper from Gestede’s introduction to the starting XI. The likes of Leandro Bacuna (5.0) – who’s classified as a defender but has been fielded on the right flank in pre-season – already piqued our interest with his out-of-position potential and could further profit from the new boy’s arrival. The former Netherlands U21 international ranked second (18) behind Ashley Westwood (23) among Villa’s midfield for crosses, despite clocking only 1044 minutes. With a cross frequency of one every 15.3 minutes, Bacuna could the perfect foil for the ex-Blackburn marksman.

That being said, the possible recruitment of Emmanuel Adebayor offers Sherwood an alternative to Gestede and with Libor Kozak also in the mix, the Villa boss has target man alternatives. Given that Sherwood has utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 set-ups over the summer, Gestede has the physical attributes to lead the line as a lone striker, though the Villa boss has also trialled a 4-4-2, which could see fellow new boy Jordan Ayew offer plenty of pace and movement alongside a more robust strike partner up front. Like Ayew, Gabriel Agbonlahor can also operate on the flanks but will perhaps be limited to minutes off the bench in light of Sherwood’s squad overhaul.

Sherwood’s penchant for attacking football may well promote Villa’s main men as viable value options for the season ahead. A weekend hat-trick from Scott Sinclair (5.0 in FPL) has many mulling over his inclusion in our midfields, and if Gestede nail down a starting berth, he may also stake a claim for our Fantasy consideration. Likely to come in around 6.0 – the same as Ayew – in FPL, the former Blackburn hit man has six favourable fixtures (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA, STOK) in the first eight Gameweeks to ease him into his new surrounds.

What's the latest on Francis? He didn't feature in the final preseason game for Bournemouth. Is he out of favour? Injured?

No idea sorry ... might need to repost a few times and wait for a Bournemouth fan to waltz online. I'd like to know also ... could be safer to go with Mings or Distin

Francis is your best bet for Bournemouth. Nailed on and gets forward well in tandem with Ritchie. Also looked pretty sharp in his final pre-season game against Cardiff on Friday. Mings looks like he'll get into the first team but may take time to develop a partnership with Pugh or Atsu on the left side.

Here's the thing about barahino, everyone says bad fixtures, but city week 1 and Chelsea week 3 at home are tough matches where Chelsea and city likely won't be needing a CS. I back him to score in one or the other.. I wouldn't want a west brom defender, but I don't mind playing him in both and taking what I get. Lambert will only help him as long as he stays on penos.

Aside from that, the other fixtures are tasty, trips to palace, stoke, villa should be easy enough, with away games to Norwich and watford to boot. The other home games are Sunderland, saints and Everton.

Tell me who of that lot is a strong defense ... maybe argue stoke and saints, but the are going through changes at the back..

    Hey lads,

    My team currently:

    Ruddy. Butland
    Kos. Cedric. Ward. O'shea. Mings
    Haz. Sterling. Ozil. Mane. Bentaleb
    Rooney. Pelle. Sakho

    Main worries:

3 Southampton players too much? I genuinely see them as the best options for their prices in each position.

How nailed on are o'shea and mings?

Any replies to either question or a general RMT appreciated

      Solid, similar enough to mine.
Soton have good fixtures so I don't think 3 is too much.
O'Shea is captain (isn't he?) so should be nailed and I'd say Mings would be too. If not there is always Francis.

O'shea is captain, he should start, I just noticed they signed Kaboul and Coates and wonder whether he's going to be eased out. Mings was £8mill, surely he'll start too, is Francis a left back?

Oshea is captain indeed but it doesnt guarantee anything.

Nevertheless I reckon it will be:

          Jones Coates Oshea PVA

Coates was there last year, or end of, and O'Shea played. Francis is one of the full backs, is nailed and supplie a few assists last season.

I'd give Pelle a miss. MIngs should be nailed...was their record buy...but clean sheets will be few and far between with that team I fear. O'Shea I think will play....but he did look a bit past it last season at times. I'd be nervous with him, honestly.

not sure about that. Wenger has said before he likes to play one pacy and one playmaking winger who drifts inside. I think it's wally vs ox at RW this weekend. Giroud to play up top. Probably Cazorla left wing, Ozil hole and Ramsey pivot with Coq. I am going cold on Walcott, was really quite awful in that game tbh,

Walcott has been in brilliant form as of late, is fully fit now. He's more than earned his place in the side, IMO. I think it's harsh to say he was awful. Not his best game for sure but if you owned him in FPL there's 6 points, nothing wrong with that.

Wenger also has a history of starting GW1 with his community shield team. Something to note also.

Walcott has been good in pre season but Ox has been better. It's very close. His assist was pure luck, was really a solo effort from the man he is COMPETING with.

I'm not sure that Ox has been better. He's scored in the toughest game of the lot but that doesn't mean his whole pre season has been better.

Pure luck? Well as I said, from an FPL perspective that's 6 points.

I think you are missing the point. I'm saying that yes he didn't have his best game, but even then you'd be walking away with 6 points if you owned him.

It's only one game anyway, over the whole pre season he has been brilliant. There weren't many standouts anyway.

My point is that he's a lot less likely to get 6 points if he doesn't start. 😉

We all know Wally is fpl gold when he plays, i'm not denying that. The 6 points thing is really irrelvant imo. It's trying to get into Wengers head that we have to try and do.

Yeah I agree. Ozil looked a lot worse out wide last night which is why he's left my team.

As I said above in reply to Nabs Walcott has been in brilliant form in pre season, seems fully fit now too so there's no reason why he should be left out of the side, especially with Sanchez out.

It was one game. Two free wide positions (assuming Arsene sticks with a 4-2-3-1) Walcott has to play in one of them if Giroud is up top (if Walcott is up top, even better) and Sanchez is out.

I think Walcott/Ramsey is the ARS hole not Caz or Ozil.

The hole is usually defined as the player who plays between mid and striker to create space for the striker. Caz and Ozil are classic creative playmakers but they do not make striker type runs like hole players..

If Kun and Alexis were sure to start gw1 (dw I know they're not, just a hypothetical) if I squeezed them into the line-up I could get something that looks like the team below. Does anyone think the weakness would be more than made up for by having them in there?

Well I am a bit skeptical to say the least. Two good pre season games and all of a sudden people on here are saying he is first choice. BR has even said he wouldn't be afraid to play him, which I agree with because he has looked very good.

Moreno is a liability defensively but at least he's had a season in the PL, for that reason alone I think he'll start and wouldn't be surprised to see Gomez given some gametime and depending on his performance may oust Moreno.

Same front 3 as me but deep down I hate that front line. All pre-season I've been saying Rooney looks terrible up front for United and Kane over performed last year. Sakho also has an awkward fixture first up. Despite all these convictions a lack of options means we have a limited pool to chose from, particularly when its best to have 2 big hitting forwards so we have an option on who to sell when Aguero arrives.

Midfield is ok but I've completely gone off Walcott. AOC and Ramsey will get game time on the wing and Giroud is a better striker. Fletcher is very meh as a 5th mid and I feel as if a 5m mid might be a good idea in case there is a game where you would prefer not to play Sakho.

Saylor will be problematic as he's not expected to be a starter. You can expect a price drop down to 3.8 if you keep him in your team as bench fodder. Janmaat has awkward fixtures as well and I don't think he'd be worthwhile unless Newcastle have a reasonable chance for clean sheets.

Guys what would your recommend for my team this week?

RMT please. This is my draft as of today

    Rudy-Rudd
    Azpi-Kolarov-Huth-Francis-Baker
    Haz-Schneirdelin-Hendo-Walcott-Ritchie
    Costa-Rooney-Sakho

Not really sure. I want to bring in Aguero and get rid of Rooney for GW3 and on. Need cheaper options in the back. I feel like I need to reinforce the middle.
    Options? Suggestions? Thanks!!

Although he's cheap not sure how much you'll get from Schneiderlin points wise and Costa is obviously a big doubt.

Downgrade Costa and upgrade Schneiderlin would be where I start and maybe a better option than Kolarov

Alreet lads. I did my first ever draft league last night. I have to say that I am very happy with my team. What do you reckon? NB There are 10 in the league

    Foster/Myhill
    Skrtel - Cedric - Kolarov - Jones - Chester
    Sanchez - Walcott - Ozil - Yaya - Richie
    Pelle - Sakho - Mitrovic

Obviously a lot of eggs in an arsenal shaped basket, but I don't really have a problem with that as I would expect at least 2/3 to play every game.

Some of the other lads made some really bizarre picks. One picked Kompany as his first pick!!

    Lukaku [-> Kane gw2], Benteke, 4.5

    I'm done for today.

      You arent actually 🙂

forward line looks weak even though lay out suggests your format is 3-5-2

      Is Theo nailed on?

That defence is a shocker, you have two 4.0 defenders

      Alarm bells

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, just being honest

This is only a 2/3 week stop gap before a wildcard overhaul. In. That time Targett and Theo are playing for virtue of Bertrand and Sanchez being MIA respectively.

RMT. Also, who should I play GW1?

    Ward or Sakho?

    Pantilimon | Hennessey

    Skrtel | Fonte | Alderweireld | Ward | Huth

    Hazard | Sterling | Ozil | Mane | Fletcher

    Benteke | Kane | Sakho

Hey guys, thoughts and tips on my team would be great. I am still deciding between Ritchie & Sakho or Milner/Chadli & Deeney.

    Ruddy (Butland)

    Mert Aspi Huth (Francis O'shea)

    Walcott Mata Hazard Ritchie (Wanyama)

    Kane Rooney Sahko (0.0mil ITB)

    Cheers 🙂

Ramsey and Cazorla both I think. Until Sanchez returns anyway

Ozil, Cazorla, Walcott, Ramsey in that order for me. I'm leaving out Sanchez who would be 1st pick with unlimited cash!
All good options with different appeal and drawbacks.
