i'm not into it and don't want to seem like an animal hater, but the horses do pretty well out of it when compared to other bred animals. better being a racehorse than a pig i'd have thought. those working with them are very attached to the animals, i know that. jockeys die too on occasion.

1300 dead in 3200 days. It's time it was stopped.

The problem is the horse breeders have turned horses into thoroughbreds that can't cope with what they are trained to do. The poor damned things just snap..literally.

There are circa 30,000 employed, directly and indirectly in the equine industry in Ireland and it is worth roughly 1.5b to the economy.
During this recession, would you rather have 50,000 kids having unemployed Dads?

I understand your stance and it is a shame so many animals die but they are animals afterall.

Did you know there is an opportunity cost to all spending, and the money that is spent on the horse racing industry could be repurposed to other industries that also employ people without killing so many animals for reasons other than food?

Yes, I did know that. Here are some figures (for Ireland)

Net Government funding through the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund
amounted to €24 million or €1,512 per person directly employed in the industry.
This net funding figure is arrived at by deducting the €37 million realised by
the 1% betting levy from the Exchequer allocation of €61 million to HRI.

Considering we spend 70k per year housing a prison inmate and nearly 50k per year for every unemployed person, I think 1500 euros per year subsidy for every person that works in an industry that generates 1.5 billion to the economy is money well spent.

Too much money is generated as a result of the horse racing industry for it to close down . It's not just people working directly with horses. in 2008 generated a world-wide market worth around US$115 billion

      1. Dr Dream

I understand all that but the industry is producing horses now that are doomed to die in the name of sport due to the way they are bred. The whole industry needs to rewind about twenty or thirty years to produce horses that are more robust. The deaths is getting completely out of hand and going unnoticed and unchecked. It needs to stop.

More robust = slower and less exciting races = less revenue = less jobs = less money spent in local economies.

As was pointed out above, these animals have amazing lives compared to the likes of battery hens or mass produced salmon, pigs etc.

It's collateral damage I'm afraid. We are top of the food chain for a reason.

Sorry if that offends you, it's what I believe.

Maybe not all of them, sure. But there are 20 billion chickens alive on this planet today.
You can be damn sure the % of those living in the lap of luxury is minuscule in comparison.

Animals suffer just like humans. Why should they suffer just cos we are so -called more intelligent and have power over them. You can fog it off with some luke-warm Darwinian justiication but at the end of the day its just plain wrong, theres no good reason they should suffer the way the day except for human greed.

Well, there are economic advantages to be gained in a small country like Ireland becoming a world leader in thorough breeding. As I have pointed out.
For me, it's a justifiable (if unfortunate side affect) that animals die in order that some humans can have a better life.

Is that realistic in an industry that offers lucrative prizes for winning . For example the Breeders Cup Classic winner gets $2,750,000 . Also these are highly competitive people Wakey I think they would laugh at the suggestion of handicapping themselves in anyway just like Bolt or any top class sprinter would . I think you should read Richard Dunwoody's autobiography even though you don't like the sport it is an excellent read . It is an excellent insight into the mindset of jockeys and horse racing industry in general . Tbc I am not saying you are wrong I am just saying why it won't happen

Mane(bench mid) to Alli even though it would make it difficult to get Aguero in later?

Was planning to swap Mane to Stanislas which leaves enough cash to do Ighalo to Aguero.

Although with a strikeforce of Vardy, Ighalo and Lukaku I wont be wanting Aguero just yet anyway.

Feel like taking a chance now, hit that stage of the season where I've a stinking 285k rank, staring into the fantasy abyss.

They say you only get famous putting your balls on the line..

I'd like to see an alternative template team and just WC.. Any suggestions?

certain strikers you have to have but you could get some serious differentiation in mid and def

      Aguero Lukaku Vardy

      Silva Ramsey Walcott/Sanchez Mahrez Alli

Ivano Rose Ottamendi ( if kompany back) Ward Nyom

      Gks (watever)

    Butland
    Bellerin - Dann - Dawson
    KDB - Ozil - Mahrez (C) - Wijnaldum
    Kane - Lukaku - Vardy

    Deulofeu, VvD, Moreno

    1FT 4.3 ITB

What to do here? Just save? Play AoA and bench one of the defenders?
