Next up this Friday afternoon, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article, casting an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

Captain Poll

With a couple of trips to Watford and Palace on his Gameweek 33 agenda, Romelu Lukaku is the standout armband candidate for this week.

A massive 75% have backed the Everton striker to serve up the points against a pair of defences with just two clean sheets apiece in their last 14 league outings. Lukaku – who has two goals and an assist in his previous four – has already scored or assisted against both teams earlier in the season.

City’s home encounter with West Brom has earned Sergio Aguero 8% of the votes. Having produced 25, 16 and 11-point hauls in front of his own fans, the Argentine is one of the few players capable of outscoring any double Gameweek option, though the Baggies have tightened up in recent matches and conceded just once in the last three.

Yannick Bolasie, Ross Barkley and Aaron Lennon sit around the 2%-mark for their respective doubles. Whilst four goals and an assist in seven underlines the latter’s form, Bolasie and Barkley have been highly unpredictable.

The Palace winger has earned points in only five of his 21 league outings ahead of back-to-back home clashes with Norwich and Everton, though the Canaries have one away clean sheet all season, whilst the Toffees have a couple of shut-outs in nine.

Although Barkley is more nailed-on than Lennon, he has netted in just one of his last 16 appearances – a pair of penalties against Newcastle in Lukaku’s absence back in Gameweek 24.

Elsewhere, the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez and Harry Kane are backed by 1%. Like Aguero, all four are capable of explosive single-Gameweek hauls but can any of them realistically usurp Lukaku in our thinking?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Trip (C) Lukaku this weekend, or is there a much better option another week?

I'm amazed anyone who has seen us lately would triple captain Lukaku tbh.

I would consider getting Lennon instead of Barkley, and not sure about double Liverpool defence personally.

    Lukaku (TC), Aguero, Welbeck

Thanks for comments everyone. I think I'm going to take a risk on Bolasie, because I'm chasing in my ML. Does this look alright? 7 blanks in GW35, so will need to take one hit to field 11. Will probably transfer out Bolasie for GW34.

    Robles, Darlow
    Smalling, Bellerin, Lovren, Gabriel, Simpson
    Sanchez, Payet, Coutinho, Bolasie, Lennon

      34 - Sánchez
      37 - Payet

      As it stands.

Payet in 37, if West Ham are still chasing a Champions League spot, would be ideal.

Sanchez in 34 stands out for me. I want to use my bench boost then though so a bit unsure on TC

    4. Flycroft

      surely Sanchez

    5. Viper

    6. sneif4
      • 13 Years

I thought Sanchez would be the consensus. Not having him is going to hurt.

What of Lukaku's chances this week?

I do have Payet though so could hold for 37

      1. KingNidge
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

In isolation Alexis is the best option on paper for a TC but in a week where the bench boost is going to also be the best time to play..
Which then makes Lukaku the stand out option this week as opposed to anybody in 37 imo

        1. sneif4
          • 13 Years

Good point. I'll be using BB next week as well so Lukaku this week is the route I probably go for

Why not. I'm locked in. Got to got to score in those two matches.

Nice tip that Everton have played 3 of the top six in their last four, in the last six gameweeks Everton have also had two blanks.

Need to get a cheap enabler for WC so I figured it may as well be someone from Bournemouth who play villa this week. Pick one:

    A. Gabriel + King
    B. Francis + Iwobi

    Already have Bellerin + Sanchez

I am insane to be considering Fosu Mensah??

Only 3.9 and always gets some minutes, also with the FA Cup replay meaning first team is tired, AVL could be a great time for him to play

    Really "enables" my team

    Mingnolet Robles
Bellerin Gabriel Lovren (or Sakho?) Ward Jagielka
Ozil De Bruyne Coutinho Payet Lingard
    Aguero Lukaku Mitrovic

Alternatively, I was thinking about swapping out De Bruyne, Ozil, Ward and Jagielka for Barkley, Sanchez, Dann and Dawson. Any thoughts?
