Andy Carroll and Alex Iwobi look to have cemented their starting roles for West Ham and Arsenal ahead of their upcoming doubles. Liverpool and City’s team sheets remain a risk whilst both are still in Europe, whilst Leicester and Spurs punish those who parted company ahead of Gameweek 34.

Carroll could be the Hammers differential….
Handed a first start since Gameweek 21, the West Ham frontman looks to have leapt to the front of the queue for the lone striker role ahead of double Gameweek 34. Slaven Bilic may have a numerous options available up top but Carroll’s hat-trick, and subsequent 16-point haul at home to Arsenal, puts him in the driving seat ahead of clashes with Leicester and Watford. Whilst most of Fantasy managers’ focus has been on the Hammers’ midfield, the big Geordie has emphatically staked a claim for our consideration.

Iwobi looks undroppable….
After netting in back-to-back clashes against Everton and Watford, the Arsenal wide man continued his fine form with a pair of assists at Upton Park. Tellingly, Iwobi was afforded the full 90 minutes by Arsene Wenger on Saturday, somewhat allaying fears over his pitch time ahead of the double Gameweek. In this sort of form, it’d be something of a surprise if Wenger chooses to bench the 4.6-priced winger for the upcoming home clashes against Palace and West Brom as the Gunners look to cement a top-four finish again.

Leicester and Tottenham have the form to punish the sellers….
Many who opted to wildcard this week ahead of bench-boosting in Gameweek 34 were made to regret that decision over the weekend. Whilst the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley, Aaron Lennon and Yannick Bolasie drew blanks in the first of their two fixtures, highly-owned options such as Jamie Vardy (50% ownership, 13 points), Toby Alderweireld (42% ownership, 15 points) and Dele Alli (30% ownership, seven points) punished those who chose to drop them for double Gameweek players instead. With Leicester set for three home matches in four and Spurs up against Stoke and West Brom next, big displays from Riyad Mahrez (66% ownership) and Harry Kane (44%) could have us ruing that decision further.

We need City and Liverpool to crash out of Europe….
With one eye on the midweek home clashes against PSG and Dortmund, Manuel Pellegrini and Jurgen Klopp made a statement of intent by naming five and seven changes respectively last weekend. Despite the absence of David Silva, Pellegrini decided not to hand the in-form Kevin de Bruyne a third straight start and utilised the Belgian as a second-half sub instead, whilst Philippe Coutinho warmed the Reds’ bench from start to finish against Stoke. Should either side progress to the last four in their respective competitions, there’s a real concern that both managers’ team sheets could continue to disappoint us over the run-in.

Milner could be an under the radar option….
Whilst owners of Coutinho and Roberto Firmino (who was subbed off just after the hour-mark) were left frustrated at the weekend, James Milner produced the goods yet again for Klopp’s side. A pair of assists against Stoke took his tally to three goals, five assists and five bonus points in his last eight league outings for the Merseysiders. The former City man, who sets you back just 6.5 and is owned by only 3% of FPL managers, may well be one to consider, particularly if Liverpool are knocked out by Dortmund on Thursday evening.

Townsend offers Rafa a crumb of hope….
It’s a goal and assist in the last two Gameweeks now for the Newcastle wide man after he fired a late consolation in the 3-1 loss to Southampton. Given that the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Georginio Wijnaldum failed to produce a single attempt on goal at St Mary’s, Townsend is shaping up to be the go-to man for those looking to invest in the Magpies’ attack ahead of back-to-back home encounters against Swansea and Man City.

European dream keeps Saints ticking over….
A 3-1 triumph over Newcastle made it three wins in four for the Saints as they ramp up their pursuit of a European spot for next season. Ronald Koeman’s side may not have a double Gameweek to follow but their weekend showing served a reminder that investing in teams with everything still to play for can prove a canny tactic. Sitting just three points behind fifth-placed United and with Everton and Palace’s dodgy defences up next, the likes of Graziano Pelle clearly has the form to outperform many a double Gameweek option, having racked up three double-figure hauls in four.

Gylfi may be difficult to ditch….
It’s nine goals in 14 league appearances now for the Swansea playmaker after he ended Guus Hiddink’s unbeaten run as Chelsea boss with a 1-0 win at the Liberty. Whilst the victory took Swansea onto the magical 40-point mark, and has surely done enough to seal their safety, Sigurdsson’s relentless form is making him difficult to ditch in spite of the lack of a double. Having picked up points in six straight league matches, those owners intent on wildcarding this week may well have second thoughts as he makes his way to Newcastle.

Rashford’s pitch time looks in question ….
Pinpointed by many Fantasy managers as a decent enabler ahead of United’s pair of home matches against Villa and Palace, the youngster was replaced by Ashley Young at the break in yesterday’s 3-0 loss to Tottenham. Rashford may have started the last six for Louis van Gaal’s side but with Wayne Rooney set to return for the reserves tonight, there has to be concerns over his security of minutes going forward. Given that their defat at the Lane means that United are just one point ahead of West Ham in fifth, there’d be no real surprise if the under-fire Dutchman turned to experience to get his side over the finishing line.

The full success/failure of gw33 wildcards can't be assessed until after gw35.

I shaped my wildcard for dgw34 and to get 11 out in gw35 with no hits. I knew gw33 might be rough, but I had hoped and thought I'd be at least okay this week.

I was wrong about that last part, but more due to one or two poor decisions on my part coupled with some bad luck than to the overall strategy of removing Spurs and Leicester for double game weekers, I think.

I argued here that Ozil should be kept ahead of KDB and Coutinho because of lack of rotation risk, and pushed Milner as a very good Liverpool alternative. Yet I talked myself out of both of them for KDB and Coutinho (who may still turn out well in 34 & 35). My bad.

I argued against Gabriel as a 3rd Arsenal player, yet in the end when I dropped Ozil I bought Gabriel. I doubt I'll get 3 games out of him now in 34/35 after Big Andy had him looking for his mama. My bad.

KDB and Coutinho rested. That was forseeable. My bad.

Lukaku and Payet and Mitrovic blanks-- that's just the way it goes.

I'm not knee-jerking anyone out (barring injuries). I've got 15 DGWer's next week. 32 players, w/captain. And 11 in 35 with two free transfers.

    I think gw's 34 and 35 will be better.

Sound like you made the same choices as I did. Harsh, but hopefully it will turn out better next week. Added problem is that the guy Im trailing in my mini league, and who wc, did get 65 points. Can't wait for the rants in the scoutcast ,because this was the worst case scenario discussed.

If Wenger blamed Gabriel for the goals v West Ham surely he would have brought Mert on at some point in the game. The fact he didn't, or even start him, knowing their weakness for defending crosses, suggests he's lost faith in Mert now and Gabriel should retain his place. Makes sense? What do you think, will he keep his place or be dropped?

    1. Park the bus
      • 14 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

i think blaming Gabriel is standard Arsenal fans logic. Carroll is playing... he's the best forward in the league at attacking cross balls. If he's in the team against you, the main priority should be stop the crosses coming in. I'm not saying Gabriel didn't have a bad game, but he was left exposed. He actually did very well to block the first effort before the rebound went in for the second goal. I think too much is being made of him losing the ball to Carroll before his apparent kick out, lets not forget he was fouled! Kosc did the same thing before Payet's disallowed goal remember...

in summary i don't think it would be good for his confidence if he gets dropped. he's in the team on merit, harsh to punt him after one bad game imo.

Waiting on the press conference, but he's conceded multiple goals before and carried on playing, just 6 games ago he conceded 3, then 2, then 2 and played the next 3.

It seems a bit harsh to single him out. I don't necessarily agree that he would have taken him off though - might not have wanted to use a defensive substitute when they were looking for goals.

      I'm not overly worried

I haven't looked at the timing of the goals and substitutions so it might not be that relevant tbf.

Wenger defended his team selection after the match by saying, regardless off who he's played at the back this season, his team has conceded too many goals at set pieces. Which throws Gabriel a lifeline. On the other hand, Arsenal play CPL and WBA next and both teams are strong at set piece, therefore, Wenger might change it up and bring in Mert and Cech to deal with ariel threat.

      I agree.

But in regards to Gabriel's performance as a whole, was it as bad as people are saying it was? Or is the FFS community exaggerating because there was that little element of doubt when we all picked him?

I personally didn't think he was worse than any of the other defenders

Agreed. The only reason I have doubts is because of the mass reaction to him on here. If so many people think a different way I have to ask myself have I got that wrong. It's nice to see I'm not alone 🙂

Well, positionally, he was a bit rubbish. I have decided not to get him.

IF I were Wenger, I would drop him.

I don't think Wenger expected Carroll to be so devastating.

I think Slav did a number on him.

He must've known Shirl, they don't come much better than Carroll at that sort thing.

Well, before this game, the general consensus was that Carroll was rubbish. Slav has been saying all Season that he is back to his best, but not many believed him.

Gabriel was so nervous after the first ten, that he was always one yard forward, leaving a gap behind.

Anyone who's seen Carroll recently would've known he's in form. We talked about it before this GW when discussing the England side if you remember.

          Not so.

Sakho was told that Carroll was playing, hence his strop.

I expect Gabriel to play against CPL who bring a mobile pacey attack.

I can see Mert in the frame for WBA who rely heavily on set pieces and will probably play 4 CBs. It's wait and see though really, isn't it?

      1. Miro

Wenger must rate Carroll as pacey and mobile attacker then.

          Not at all.

It wasn't anticipated that he would start. Sakho was the expected starter and that didn't materialise. He does bring pace.

West Brom are like Stoke and Bolton of 10 years ago. They train for the set piece and bring a lot of artillery.

I'm not sure what you are suggesting re Puncheon and Cabaye.

Yes, but the concession of those FKs are likely to be conceded by fouls on the pacey players. It's a reasonable hypothesis that a slow more cumbersome player is likely to be unable to match that attribute and be forced into tactical fouls that provide the opportunity.

I'm not saying he'll play but he'll be 'in the frame'. Selection wouldn't surprise me.

I have to say that in general I agree with your sentiments but he surprised me when he last played. I thought he did a good job. Thought he would be shown up pre-match.

It looks to me as though Klopp wants to see who can sink or swim, as well as resting key personnel of course.

I can see why. No doubt he will reshape a squad this summer.

Expect Cout to play 14th, have the 17th off, and return rested for a big Merseysode derby

The sunny side to the fact that Coutinho didn't play is that I have Iwobi on the bench. Anyone know why Coutinho didn't play, I have only just wildcarded him in?!
