Earlier this month, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was launched for the campaign ahead. After winning the League of Leagues for each of the last three seasons, we’re now looking to defend our crown in 2016/17.

What’s more, Sky Sports have kindly pledged £1,000 to the manager who finishes top of our league. Win that, and you might just be in line to claim an even bigger prize.

We’re proud to say that the Fantasy Football Scout league has supplied the winner of the overall Sky Sports game in each of the last two seasons – for some handy research, those looking to get involved should check out this interview with 2015/16 winner Alan Wood from earlier in the summer.

In an incredible 2015/16, Alan emerged victorious with a 100+ points winning margin over his nearest challenger and collected £20,000 for his season’s work.

This time around, the top prize is £25,000 – incentive enough to assemble a team in time for kick off on August 13.

For those playing the Sky Sports game, we’ve set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league – the name is FFScout and the pin number to join is 8183867.

It’s also worth noting that Sky Sports have introduced a handful of tweaks to their rules and scoring system for 2016/17. We take a look at the main implications below.

Captains

Undoubtedly the biggest change to the Sky Sports game is the new captain rule:

  • Captain changes must be made before each Match Day deadline to score points for your team. This means managers can make unlimited captain changes in a Game Week.
  • Throughout the 2016/17 season, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football Game Weeks will run from Friday to Thursday.

Out goes a single tactical armband swap, with Sky Sports Fantasy managers now afforded unlimited changes in a round of fixtures. Similar to how we have previously made transfers in the middle of a Gameweek, each captain selection must be finalised prior to each Match Day deadline.

Last season’s Thursday night deadline has been changed to move into line with the new batch of Friday evening fixtures.

Essentially, then, having a captain for each Match Day is far easier to achieve and the planning element of the game will now centre on ensuring we have sufficient armband coverage in any given Gameweek. Just like last season, we expect transfers to prove key to this strategy.

Bonus Points

Further reading on the new scoring system can be found here, though we’ll go through the main changes one-by-one below.

Bonus Points – Tier 1 (+2 points for each)
5 saves made (GK only)
3 tackles won (All)
60 completed passes (All)
3 shots on target (All)

Bonus Points – Tier 2 (+3 points for each)
7+ saves made (GK only)
5+ tackles won (All)
70+ completed passes (All)
5+ shots on target (All)

The Tier 2 Bonus section is new for this season, as is the shots on target section in Tier 1. Jonty’s recent community article, which assessed the new implications, is worth swatting up on.

The main difference here is that a player needs to make three successful tackles to earn +2 points this term, whereas he was required to register four last season. This could be a valuable source of points for full-backs and central midfielders in the main. Taking the time to delve into our members data on offer could reward the shrewd manager here.

Scoring

  • Goalkeepers and defenders now qualify for a clean sheet after a minimum of 60 minutes rather than 75.

This rule change could be quite influential and bring the Sky Sports game in line with the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ruling on pitch time required to earn a shut-out. Those defenders prone to early substitutions are now slightly more appealing options again.

  • Goalkeepers are now awarded +7 points for a clean sheet instead of +5.

Combining a premium keeper in a defensively sound team who also makes a lot of saves seems the best way to exploit this new scoring system, particularly when you consider the relatively low price of the premium keepers compared to the premium defenders (who still receive only +5 for a clean sheet).

  • Penalty saves are now worth +5 instead of +3.

The likes of Watford’s Heurelho Gomes, who made more spot-kick stops (three) than any keeper in 2015/16 and West Ham number one Adrian (who has registered more penalty saves (five) than any other keeper in the last two seasons) will likely benefit from this change.

  • Defenders now get +7 and Midfielders +6 for goals scored, forwards remain on +5.

All three classifications earned five points apiece last year, so the improvement certainly smiles kinder on the defenders.

Patrick van Aanholt led the way for goals scored amongst defenders in 2015/16, with six to his name, which would have earned him an extra 12 points under the new rule. Palace’s Scott Dann, with five goals, would have been the only other defender to earn at least ten more points from this ruling.

Eight midfielders would have earned at least ten points more in 2015/16. In saying that, only two Sky Sports midfielders (Riyad Mahrez, with 17, and Andre Ayew, with 12) were at least on a par with Van Aanholt’s tally of 12, with Alexis Sanchez (13 goals) classified as a forward.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be rolling out Player Price List analysis articles, breaking down the options position by position and offering insight into each player’s potential.

We’ve also set up a new community article to exclusively deal with Sky Sports Fantasy teams. Those looking to get involved with the discussion should click this link.

    Bats vs. Costa?

    Will Kane struggle without Dembele?

I don't think so, but I don't think Spurs will score many against Everton and Palace

What is this line of thinking about Kane and Dembele?

Seriously baffles me what stupid links people are making up between the two. It will have no affect whatsoever on Kane's scoring.

I have been playing with a lot of calculations based on Ruth's older article regarding getting the maximum value for each 1m spent on players. After doing this I have noticed that the cheaper the player the better value they provide in ppg per 1m spent. Using the simplest example a defender worth 5.5-6 million should approx 130-150 points in a season. Where as a 9.5 midfielder should get between 170-200 if you are lucky per season

So the value provided by defenders or lower prices players is generally always better than higher prices players. Which could be a reason to play 4 or even 5 premium defensers

Taking his theory further the likes of Kun and zlatan provide by far the worst value with max points of 200-220 per season and only make sense if you captain them at least 3/4 of the time. Meanin having both of them is a losing proposition in all instances

I see where you're going. Sadly it's wrong. It's all about maximising points on the pitch. High scoring defenders still don't compete with high scoring mids or forwards.

Points on the pitch as a pure function of points per game per 1m spent assuming all money is spent with minimum possible on bench.

Captaincy has to be taken into account though. The most explosive players are the most expensive and with a good gameweek, proven players like Aguero and Sanchez will turn your game around for the better.

Another thing with cheap players is that they will get you points, but you have to have the right ones. Expensive players have high prices because you almost know they'll get you points, the difference will be determined by these factors: discovering the good cheap options as soon as possible, picking the best possible expensive ones in a combination with the cheap ones by allocating your budget wisely and having the right players at the right time.

Yes but you can can only captain 1 player per game. To get value out of someone as expensive as aguero you need to captain him at least 3/4 of the time by my calcs. Meani only 1/4 I'd left which only barely brings value to the other + 8.5 player on the pitch. Then all other high players are actually heavy negative vAlue even with scores of 180 plus per season.

I am considering playing in a 4-5-1 formation. Although Aguero is by himself, this gives me the opportunity to buy premium defenders and midfielders

Exactly what I think. You could play 442 as well. But point is you should only ever have 2 or more players with a value higher that 8.5. One you Captain most of the time and the other some of the time. Then they can provide value for their price. All other slots should be 7.5 or less

I think I'm going to edit this draft now:
            Mandanda - Jakupovic
Shaw - Terry - Cedric - Matip (Taylor)
            Hazard - Mahrez - Tadic - Firmino - Ayew
            Aguero (4.5) (4.5)

That is not bad. But I still think having more that 2 players over 8 and you lose value per 1m spent.

I used this philosophy last season with only sub 8M players. Went allright, but that being said, you should try to optimize total points, not value per mil.. 🙂

Interesting. Yes I agree but optimising points per slot is what I mean more than points per player. As I understand transfers will occur. But it is the cheaper slots that provide the value

there is something to note - most CS come in the second half of the season
That's a good time to stock up. GKPs come out top , they don't normally get subbed/rotated/rested unless its really bad.

Just read the budget midfielders article and no mention at all of Adomah!! Don't get it
Played 43 out of 46 league matches, almost all on the right, bagged 6 goals and 6 assists
Fischer plays from the left so he's clearly not in direct competition
Negredo signed who as CF is known for his ability to bring others into play

He *could* potentially be a 4ppg+ plug in and play defender for £5.0m which would be fantasy gold dust.

On a side note on the other side of North London I'm eyeing up Vertonghen done the line from gw14-24. Ok a long way off but keenly priced and could be fit and in the team for that run.

    Foster - (Jakupovic)
    Shaw - Terry - Stones - (Friend - Parades)
    Hazard - Mahrez - Mkhitaryan - Miralles/Townsend/Ayew - (Fletcher)
    Aguero - Berahino/6.5 - Benteke/7.5/6.5 if Ayew

How is this for a current place hold team?

If Ayew a 6.5 forward. Thoughts?

I've noticed Foster and Townsend are in most teams. They're playing against eachother on the first gameweek. What I'm trying to say is - they're inevitably going to cancel eachother out, are you happy to field them both knowing one will only get 2pts?

Too heavy in defence? Just know these 3 are certain BAP winners.

    Foster / Heaton
Bellerin Alder Shaw / Friend Parades
Mahrez Siggy Townsend Hazard / Hojbjerg
    Gray Kun Long

    1. AlexFF

Usually a heavy defence reflects on the midfield and attack causing it to be weak - that's arguably not the case here. This is a strong team. I'd take Rondon over Gray though, but that's just down to preference.

Perhaps a ridiculous idea but seeing the value in so many 5.0 and 5.5 defenders, is this in any way sensible?
    4.5 4.5
Shaw Walker Coleman Stones (If at City) Gabriel (If Mertesacker is about for 5 months)
    9.5 9.5 7.5 4.5 4.5
