With the international break nearing its conclusion, we’ve launched our latest captain poll to canvas your opinion on the likely favourites and differential options for the armband in Gameweek 8.

Alexis Sanchez (11.3) topped the Captain Poll in the previous round of fixtures, yet disappointed by blanking away to Burnley.

Nonetheless, we fully expect the 22.1% Fantasy Premier League owned Arsenal midfielder to be among the leading captaincy candidates this time out. A favourable home tie against Swansea City is a key factor, as is his strong recent form, with three goals and an assist in the last three league outings.

Sanchez was rested in the Premier League after the last international break, but that was partly due to the Gunners playing Paris Saint Germain away in the Champions League the following Tuesday. With Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets at home next Wednesday in the European competition, another rest in the league seems unlikely.

For those without the Chilean, Arsenal’s 7.7 priced Theo Walcott looks an enticing differential prospect for the captaincy.

Owned by just 8.1% of FPL managers, the winger has racked up three goals and as many assists this season and seems to be enjoying a security of starts that has been lacking in recent years.

Patience is wearing thin with Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.5), who has only one goal in his last five league outings, despite registering more shots than any other player over that period.

With a 50.2% ownership, he remains FPL’s most popular pick and is once again likely to attract interest for the captaincy. A trip to Anfield up suggests it would be surprising to see him among Gameweek 8’s frontrunners, given that lack of output.

Liverpool’s midfield stars are arguably more likely to attract interest, with Philippe Coutinho (8.3), Roberto Firmino (8.4) and Sadio Mane (9.0) scoring nine goals between them this season.

As we’ve seen time and again already, though, picking the correct Reds option in any given Gameweek is proving tricky and many owners may be deterred from handing Reds attackers the armband.

Sergio Aguero (13.1) loves Gameweek 8, putting four past Tottenham at home in 2014 and five against visitors Newcastle last season.

The 43.4% owned Manchester City striker’s has netted five times in as many matches ahead of a favourable home encounter with Everton on Saturday. As we discussed in this morning’s Scout Notes, though, Aguero is currently nursing a minor calf injury picked up in training while on international duty, with his owners now anxiously awaiting updates.

His team-mate Raheem Sterling (8.6) is another with a slight calf injury. If he can shake it off before this weekend, the 26.4% owned midfielder presents another strong captaincy option, with three assists and four goals already this term.

Others expected to figure strongly in this week’s poll include Diego Costa (10.1).

The 29.2% owned Chelsea striker may be one booking away from a ban but, having netted for Spain last night, has maintained the form that has harvested points in six of the first seven Gameweeks. No side has conceded more away from home than the reigning champions this season.

West Ham’s visit to Crystal Palace presents two strong differential candidates in Hammers midfielder Dimitri Payet and Eagles striker Christian Benteke (7.6).

Payet (9.4) has created more chances than any other player over the last four league matches and has also assisted three times. Crystal Palace’s failure to register a clean sheet this season further boosts the prospects of the 13.2% owned midfielder, who continued his rise to form by netting for France in the recent internationals.

Meanwhile, 6.9% owned Benteke will be hoping to add to a record of three goals in his last four starts, as he squares up to a West Ham side that has conceded a league-worst 17 goals this season, nine of which were shipped on the road.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Slight deviation from your question, the Times have been doing a best composite England footballer by ability. I.e. best right foot, Bobby Charlton, best left John Barnes and so on.

Man City play Barcelona a week on Wednesday.
Aguero may be rested for GW8 to ensure he is fully fit for that game. No reason to play him twice in 5 days.

in the games where he was absent KDB was pivotal and he's not going to be ready for a couple of weeks. He won't sacrifie one competition for another, it's more about balance given the options he has. If he's fit he will definitely play an hour.

Slightly baffled as to why there wasn't even a brief mention of Charlie Austin? At home to Burnley, who have conceded 3 in both of their away games this season (against pretty poor Leicester and Chelsea sides) plus he's on a bit of a hot streak. I'm personally going for Costa but just surprised he wasn't flagged up at all

He's in the poll. The article picks out some likely leading contenders as well as some good differentials. We can't name them all. Austin will get plenty of mentions across a number of articles this week I'm sure. I'm certainly looking at him for the Scout Squad.

Completely understand that you can't name everyone, definitely not trying to bash the article at all. He's just prominent in my mind as he's in my team, so I've been poring over his stats from the last 3 games to see if he's worth a captain punt

Hey all - I have a friend looking to get 2 tickets for Liverpool v West Brom on the 22nd October.

Do any of you happen to know a good place to get them? For Man Utd for example I know someone with access to 3 season tickets so it's handy but I wondered if you knew any sites where they might have a good community that sells them on for face value or similar?

Don't know about Liverpool, but I rely on a couple Arsenal forums that do spare ticket sales for my trips. They have trusted seller lists and everything is face value. Would be pretty hesitant about Twitter unless face to face meet for cash and ticket swap

No idea, but he mentions the fact that he had a complaint in his calf so must be same thing. Let's hope so anyway and that he'll be fine (if not for tomorrow, certainly for weekend).

it's worrying that he says he got injured vs Celtic, then played vs Peru.......then he got injured on Sunday...

He obviously has something wrong with him.

Ill be happy with Kun playing 60 mins as captain. That would probably would mean the game is wrapped up. I have gotten my facts wrong about the gw8 fixture when i posted the other night, but if im not mistaken he only played 60 mins when he kicked 5 on newcastle last season. Confident we will see a rampant city, especially if aguero is in the starting 11.

Against the good Everton defence? The 5 goals came against a faltering Newcastle

Not saying hell put 5 past them. 2 goals is a great result for me. I just have a feeling about this game after city lost to spurs. Its nothing to do with me rating everton badly, but more what i think man city are potentially capable of at home to a team like everton, who wont park the bus. If an early man city goal goes through, it could be very dangerous if everton elect to chase the game.

Rose. More attacking but expect rotation with CL. I will be getting Vert or Rose, maybe.

          Really is a 50:50.

          Rose: slightly more attacking
Walker: less injury prone, less likely to get rotated

If pushed, I'd go Walker. If a rival had him and I was chasing, I'd go for Rose.

Is it worth doing Sanchez >> Walcott to free up some cash? Currently 0 ITB.

        My team is:

        Foster Jaku
        Walker Blind Kos Amat Wilson
        Sanchez Coutinho Son Capoue Hjojberg
        Kun Costa Rashford

Is changing to this kind of team crazy over the next few weeks?

        Foster Pickford
        Walker Keane Kos Amat Wilson
        Walcott Coutinho Chadli Son Hjojberg
        Kun Costa Deeney

Why not save it and have sanchez for this gameweek and then maybe do it next gameweek. That way that money can go straight into another transfer, and you wont have money sitting in the bank.

Also gives you a game to access the situation incase you change your mind.

        A) Reid and Baines > Vertonghen and Pieters

        B) Reid and Januzaj > Pieters and Snodgrass

        C) Reid, Baines and Januzaj > Vertonghen, Pieters and Snodgrass (-4)

        Thoughts? Thinking C right now.

Most people who thought it was a good idea to play him 4th will probably be feeling the same. I would take a hit to play Walcott/Son. I went Son over Walcott as have Sanchez and think Son is the better pick IMO.

Ditto. Regret choosing him over Deeney (and going 3-5-2) big time.

I'd probably save the FT though and do it next week.

Savevthe transfer and do it for free next gw. Good transfers but no need for hit. Capoue was never going to score every game and outscore players like sanchez and aguero.

ALEXIS SANCHEZ CLUB & INTERNATIONAL FIXTURES - POSSIBILITY OF REST

          Alexis Sanchez's schedule now:

Thu 6th Oct: Ecuador vs Chile
Wed 12th Oct: Chile vs Peru
Sat 15th Oct: Arsenal vs Swansea
Wed 19th Oct: Arsenal vs Ludogorets

Alexis Sanchez's schedule when he got rested:

Fri 2nd Sep: Paraguay vs Chille
Wed 7th Sep: Chille vs Bolivia
Sat 10th Sep: Arsenal vs Southampton
Tue 13th Sep: PSG vs Arsenal

The difference between now and the last international break is that Arsenal had a big opponent in PSG. Now they have Ludogorets which isn't as tough a game. Logically, Wenger isn't likely to save Sanchez for the game against Ludogorets.

Arsenal have put themselves in a good position in the league. They won't be risking that. He plays. At worst early withdrawl. Rest vs Ludo likely.

Pending Kun/Lukaku being fit.... I'm considering Lallana > Son. Thought's?

          Heaton
          Mustafi/Valencia/Stones
          Haz/Chadli/Capoue/Cazorla/Lallana
          Lukaku/Kun

          Foster/Rashford/WIlliams/Amat (0.5ITB)

Hazard isn't in great form. While Lukaku scores, so does Costa.

                So, I would do Lukaku>>Costa & Hazard>>Walcott/Sanchez(if you can afford him)/Son

Seeing as you're playing 3-5-2, what about:

            Hazard + Lallana >> Walcott + Son

Then Capoue to Snodgrass next week?

I'm not stuck on 3-5-2, often play 3-4-3 in which case Haz > Son and Luk > Costa would be my pref. Not keen on doubling on Arsenal.
