Watford have significantly boosted their forward options with the club-record signing of striker Andre Gray from Burnley for a reported fee of £18.5 million.

The 26-year-old joins Brazilian attacker Richarlison at Vicarage Road and will be available to make his Hornets debut in Saturday’s home encounter with Liverpool.

The History

Gray began his career at hometown club Wolverhampton Wanderers before joining Shrewsbury Town at the age of 13.

It was there he made his professional debut in 2009, departing for non-league side Hinckley United in June 2010.

He scored 29 goals in 65 appearances for Hinckley and then signed for Luton Town, initially on loan, during the final months of the 2011/12 season.

Gray scored five goals in nine matches for the Hatters, securing a permanent move ahead of the 2012/13 campaign.

He stayed at Kenilworth Road for the next two seasons and impressively netted 47 goals in 88 appearances, convincing Championship outfit Brentford to sign him in June 2014.

The striker registered 16 goals and eight assists in 45 league outings for the Bees, which led to Burnley paying a reported £9 million for the forward.

His 25 goals and 10 assists in 43 appearances helped the Clarets secure the Championship title, while Gray was named Championship Player of the Year and also won the Golden Boot.

Last season, Gray produced nine goals and three assists in 32 matches, including a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Sunderland.

The Prospects

Given the significant outlay, Gray will be expected to spearhead the Hornets’ attack for the season ahead.

New head coach Marco Silva is a firm advocate of the 4-2-3-1 formation, so with Gray offering far more mobility as the lone striker, captain Troy Deeney may have to drop into the No 10 role in order to remain in the starting XI.

There is plenty of competition in that area of the pitch, though, with Tom Cleverley featuring regularly in a central attacking midfield role during pre-season, while Roberto Pereyra and Will Hughes are also strong options.

Stefano Okaka and Jerome Sinclair are the other striker candidates, with the versatile Richarlison more likely to push for starts on the left wing.

Gray is a striker who likes to play on the shoulder of the last man, with his pace and movement making him a real threat. He is also a good finisher and has enough strength to occupy an opposition back four.

But the 26-year-old can struggle to hold the ball up, while his tendency to be caught offside can cause frustration.

In terms of Gray’s underlying statistics, he averaged a shot every 48.26 minutes, which was far superior to Deeney (70.05), although Okaka (35.37) was the most impressive of the three.

Gray only produced a key pass every 113.4 minutes last term, inferior to both Okaka (68.21) and Deeney (73.55).

Priced at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 9.5 in Sky Sports, Gray certainly has the potential to be a viable third forward option.

The Englishman has been a consistent goalscorer over the past few seasons and, having fallen out of favour at Burnley, where Sean Dyche favoured target men Sam Vokes, he should be a better fit in a more fluent and athletic side under Silva.

Watford’s fixtures (LIV bou BHA sot MCI swa) over the opening six Gameweeks are pretty mixed, and with the move happening just days before the start of the season, there are no guarantees Gray will come straight into the starting XI.

Deeney is unlikely to feature due to a groin injury, so one of Okaka or Sinclair could lead the line if Silva doesn’t feel Gray is ready to start against Liverpool.

The opening month of the season should afford Fantasy managers the chance to take stock of Silva’s new-look Watford side.

They only scored 40 goals under Walter Mazzarri last season and ranked 16th for big chances created (44).

The signings made by Silva do offer hope the Hornets will be a different proposition this season.

But with Watford not really facing a favourable run of fixtures until Gameweek 17, their leading Fantasy assets may struggle to attract investment during the early months of the campaign.

The addition of Gray should hand Fantasy managers another mid-price alternative and that can only be good news given the dearth of options in that price bracket last season.

Whether Gray can force his way to the front of the queue remains to be seen, though, given that he will be at a disadvantage if Deeney remains in the side and – as expected – retains penalty duties.

The new arrival showed enough flashes last season to suggest he can be a regular scorer in the Premier League, though.

And if Silva can introduce a more attacking brand of football, Gray could be the major beneficiary.

I wanted to post something worthwhile instead of everything that's been buzzing around right now...

    Budget Midfielder ~6.0M

Phillips: while he went on a tear last year racking up assists and looking likely, It's tough to see how WBA will go forward (certainly it won't be great). He does have Rondon and J-Rod to aim at though, who are both good in the air. I definitely see WBA taking advantage of set-pieces and phillips could deliver in that regard.

Ritchie: I quite liked Ritchie last time he was in the PL, he's an interesting player as he's a true RM that doesn't have the pace that many RW/RFs do now in the league. I think he's got one of the best balls into box of anyone, and Newcastle should surely be the best attacking team of the promoted teams. His first fixture couldn't be worse, but at 6.0 I see the next 5 being profitable. He's a very safe pick for me, PK, set pieces, PL experience.

Gross: I understand he's got some incredible stats from Bundasliga (key pass master), but I'd like to see how Brighton work when they've got Knockhaert at full fitness. 5.5 is also a pricepoint I'd rather not touch, as the options there: Fraser, Atsu, etc. do not appeal to me much and I'd rather have the flexibility at 6.0

Ince: Sure, pre-season form against some very poor teams. I think Huddersfield will greatly struggle to score, much more than the mid/low-priced counterparts listed above. The one stat I did like from Ince is that he had the most attempts in the Championship last year - if he continues to pull the trigger he might have some great goal threat.

JWP and Fraser: Although I think Fraser could do well before Stanislas is back, I'd rather not have to adjust my low/mid-priced mid from one player to one of his teammates. JWP is certainly under threat from Lemina and co. and I'd rather see how that works out, as Southampton have good fixtures for weeks and weeks.

I'm still up in the air between those two. Also considering downgrading Dann > TFM and bringing in Tadic. Although I have Gabbs, so a southampton attacking double might not be great.

I have Dann and Gabbi too, and Ritchie is my 6.0 mid.

Slightly worried Dann is not 100% nailed on after last season and FdB stating he sees FM as the right centre back in their system. Common thought is Milivo goes back to his natural position as CM but what if FdB wants to keep Mili as CB because he wants all playing defenders (which Dann isnt)?

What do you think of it all mate? Dann safe?
Do you think FM could start in GW1 already???

I believe he likes Phillips & Fraser. I could be overthinking Stanislas' return because we'll likely be WC'ing by then, making Fraser a strong pick.

At those price points I say you go Atsu & Phillips. Then again, I think Fraser is the best 5.5 option, just too many question marks about his starting role come Stanislas that are putting me off.

Iwobi would've been a great pick, but Wenger just announced Ramsey/Oil trained and are fit. So no idea if he'll start now.

I've gone for Iwobi, I heard he's nailed on now that Sanchez is ..er "injured". He's 5.5.

I've gone Iwobi for same reason. For me it was a choice between Redmond & Rodriguez or Iwobi & Gabbiandini.

          Nar, stay the course.

Iwobi is gonna get 3 points for a clean sheet and everyone is gonna be surprised he played 90 minutes and perhaps he'll get a mini bandwagon going.

Rodriguez or I have Gabbi, it's the first week, those are the easiest transfers to choose after GW1.

Just pick the next cheapest forward who got points and instantly swap out your 3rd striker. I usually take a hit and do a mid as well. Worked so well last season for me in the first weeks. I got Fer and Capoue as soon as they got points

Good post. I agree with all that apart from the Huddersfield bit. They'll concede shed loads no doubt but that Mounie looks a goal scorer to me. A few assists from Lowe thrown in for good behaviour and Bobs your uncle. Once though, yep avoid.

I don't really rate him. Admittedly Im no expert on the lad but perhaps I should say it's more a case of wait and see.
Mounie I've had a proper look at and to me he looks like a good finisher if he's given opportunities. Not saying he'll set the world alight but I think he'll do well.

Totally agree on Mounie. Got a feeling a mini bandwagon will form early on but can't see him score more than 10 goals - which wouldn't be bad

I knew you'd say it's not, but I just fear Fraser could lose his place in time, JWP could lose his place, then I wouldn't be sure where to go unless I bring money from elsewhere. What are your thoughts?

When Stanislas comes back, surely he'll play on one wing and Fraser on the other? If Fraser is playing well, he won't be dropped. If he's not playing well, I'll be ditching him anyway.

Half of my post just dissapeared.

Came in last season with a goal and two assists in his first three games before getting injured.
Liverpool may still be a bit leaky and the next two fixtures are bou and BHA.
Problem is of course that Watford aren't really scoring goals.

There're too many 4th mid options (5.5-6.0) that I will pick the wrong one anyway. Might as well have some fun 😉

Fraser for me. Should get a good few assists and Bournemouth's fixtures are decent. The reality is it's unlikely we'll predict who will start the season on fire. Just take a punt on someone and jump on the bandwagon early. I think the key is to look for someone explosive, which is why the likes of JWP don't appeal to me.

One Phillips for me, please. Two reasons:

One, this season I prepared my own spreadsheet that tries to capture factors like PPM, fixtures, VORP, etc, and it flagged up three must haves: Kane, Lukaku and....Phillips! We'll see, it might just be a severe case of GIGO, but I'll roll with it.

Second, WBA have become a bit of a pariah team on FFS. Yeah, so last years triple up on Pulis defenders didn't work as people hoped, and mentioning Rondon is like mentioning the war to German tourists, but still... It's Pulis, the fixtures are sweet, and the team is fairly settled.

      Thanks for this DS.

i feel like Ritchie is such a dullard pick but then realize he has 3.1% ownership overall so is a massive punt. but in the end I need my 4th mid to play in GW1 and Newcastle's is terrible.

Phillips is really tempting and I've had JRod in my team for the past few days because those fixtures are plum but then again is any match featuring WBA "plum"?

i'm likely rolling with JWP & Fraser but with 2.0 ITB to give me some flexibility depending on who emerges in the 5.0-6.0 (and even higher) bracket. JWP might not be explosive but is likely to be involved and sometimes that's just as important.

West Brom fixtures are hard to ignore, but just J-Rod for me.

I know they're not attacking enough, but they still scored more goals than Southampton, and it's a good bet they'll score more than the promoted teams.

      If there's time to pick a WBA player, it's now (1-5 GW's).

And if there is a time to get NUFC players it's now as well - well, technically it's from GW 2 to 6 included but Id like to save my FT after GW1

    Dawson, Daniels, Dummett [Mee, Goldson]
