Surprisingly, more World Cup Fantasy managers are backing Aleksandr Kolarov (£5.5m) and his Serbia team-mates than Switzerland in tonight’s evening kick-off.

Kolarov, scorer of Serbia’s only goal against Costa Rica in Gameround 1, will be on free-kicks again and has 7.8 percent of McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy players invested in him for Gameround 2.

But the most popular asset for the match is midfielder Nemanja Matic (£5.5m) with eight percent ownership. That’s despite the Manchester United being involved in just one goal during qualifying.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (£7.0m)’s performance will be of interest to 6.7 percent of managers after he impressed against Costa Rica. The three chances he created was the joint-most of any midfielder in the opening round of Group E matches.

Meanwhile, Switzerland’s penalty-taking defender Ricardo Rodriguez (£5.5m) sits in just 2.2 percent of squads. The AC Milan left-back netted three spot-kicks in qualifying and added another two assists. With VAR ensuring a higher number of penalties at this tournament, he is certainly one to watch this match.

The most popular asset in the Swiss squad is substitute goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo (£4.0m), whose 2.7 percent ownership is almost certainly based on his budget price.

Despite Xherdan Shaqiri (£8.5m) creating the same number of chances as Milinkovic-Savic in Gameround 1 and assisting Stephane Zuber’s (£6.5m) headed equaliser against Brazil, he sits in just 1.8 percent of squads.

Two yellows in two different games results in a one match suspension, but when is the amnesty. Reading the Wiki page there doesn't appear to be one. Is there one just for the final?

Cedric and Tadic looking like world beaters at this tournament. Seems like they've arrived at the elite stage. Will you be building your FPL team around these two?

They aren't bad sides. Serbia being 'underrated' is the consensus based on these two games. If the game ends how it is, Serbia have 6 points. I also predict they will get into the knockout stages, and possibly win another game or three 😉

Why was there such a negative reaction to var when it was sued in England cup games?

Blatant pens not awarded to England. They weren't even allowed to be reviewed.

Overall the ref in that match was one of the worst.

VAR is immense. I don't understand how anyone would be against it. Each to their own but it will improve the game no end. It will also stop all the nonsense from biased refs.

      1. Louis_Sans_Balls
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

I'm hopeful it will open the game up more, players less likely to foul or do something deliberately stupid because they know they'll get caught, should lead to more goals in play but right now it's just allowing for more pens which I never liked anyway. It's like watching a basketball game and opting for free throws. I like to see the game flow. There will always be corruption and paid off refs unfortunately. i don't think that will ever stop. They can't review everything. I still wonder what would've been the difference with VAR back in '02.

          • 10 Years
          7 years, 9 months ago

I agree with everything you said, but I think the reason there are more penalties are because the rules of football are easier to enforce with confidence. If you want fewer pens, you need to change the rules. Or change what the penalty is 🙂

            This ^^^

With an increase of penalty then they may look at this a bit deeper.

        2. Pumpkinhead - I'm ITK …
          • 16 Years

But if it's a penalty then it's a penalty wether folk like it or not and VAR is right in most cases. Think of all the teams that would have missed out in this world cup with poor decisions had VAR not been involved . wonder what the league table would have looked like last season with VAR .

    4. Deulofail
      • 10 Years
      7 years, 9 months ago

Just a bit slow. Viewers didn't understand it thoroughly. Not enough transparency (not showing the replays when the decisions are made).

    5. badgerboy
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 10 Years
      7 years, 9 months ago

It was used in a different way. The ref would stop the game and refer things to the VAR referee and no one knew what was happening. This time the play continues while the VAR team re look at everything and ask the ref to stop the game.

      1. UshFPL
        • 9 Years

It also had major problems. Eg. the offside lines with Mata's disallowed goal

Think so. The ref would initiate the VAR process before if he was unsure about a decision, now the process is ongoing during the game and it only gets stopped if a decision needs to be reversed.

          1. Deulofail
            • 10 Years
            7 years, 9 months ago

From a but of Googling, I can tentatively conclude that it was supposed to be the same as it is in the WC (and presumably everywhere else), which is that VAR constantly checks for clear and obvious errors, and will initiate when they spot them. So I think it was realy a problem of transparency and viewer/commentator ignorance.

      Slowed the game down massively.
Was early days to be fair, but made it a painful watch.
Supporters inside the ground also didn’t like not knowing, they didn’t get big screen replays.

      1. UshFPL
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

I don't know if the last point can be solved in England. Old Trafford, for example, doesn't have a big screen

        1. HamezMace
          • 11 Years
          7 years, 9 months ago

I think once people get used to VAR they’ll accept a referees decision without needing to see a replay.

In reality 99% of people watching the PL are watching on tv anyway.

The referee gesture of the TV screen should be all a live stadium crowd need.

I agree with this, he was clearly still injured and played quite cautiously. And with nothing to play for it doesn’t make sense for him to play. Expect him to stay with the squad though.
