Surprisingly, more World Cup Fantasy managers are backing Aleksandr Kolarov (£5.5m) and his Serbia team-mates than Switzerland in tonight’s evening kick-off.

Kolarov, scorer of Serbia’s only goal against Costa Rica in Gameround 1, will be on free-kicks again and has 7.8 percent of McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy players invested in him for Gameround 2.

But the most popular asset for the match is midfielder Nemanja Matic (£5.5m) with eight percent ownership. That’s despite the Manchester United being involved in just one goal during qualifying.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (£7.0m)’s performance will be of interest to 6.7 percent of managers after he impressed against Costa Rica. The three chances he created was the joint-most of any midfielder in the opening round of Group E matches.

Meanwhile, Switzerland’s penalty-taking defender Ricardo Rodriguez (£5.5m) sits in just 2.2 percent of squads. The AC Milan left-back netted three spot-kicks in qualifying and added another two assists. With VAR ensuring a higher number of penalties at this tournament, he is certainly one to watch this match.

The most popular asset in the Swiss squad is substitute goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo (£4.0m), whose 2.7 percent ownership is almost certainly based on his budget price.

Despite Xherdan Shaqiri (£8.5m) creating the same number of chances as Milinkovic-Savic in Gameround 1 and assisting Stephane Zuber’s (£6.5m) headed equaliser against Brazil, he sits in just 1.8 percent of squads.

Just me or did it look funny how Xhaka hit that, with the inside of his boot rather than through the laces. Looked like it should have got much more swive than it did

FFS. Why isn't the ref getting told to review it in his ear? Is that not part of the VAR system...

Notwithstanding how blatant it was with the naked eye.

It seems to me that the guys in the VAR TV room are more worried about not embarrassing the ref than making the right call at times.

This is my only gripe with VAR, Argentina and Serbia robbed of clear penalties and no review while other teams benefit when it's actually used properly.

I think it is a good thing in the main but it still has a few kinks in the system.

Consistency seems to be a bit of a problem but as time goes on i hope they can iron out that.

Are refs trying to intentionally make var fail so they can say it was trialed but failed and get rid of it and go back to varless times, also making corruption easier?

  26. EmreCan Hustle

Shaqiri should be playing on the right wing. He was amazing for Stoke.

In sports where video review works well, the referees are much more neutral and anonymous. For VAR to thrive, the people in the review office need to be all powerful and the ref needs to appreciate help from the machine.

I think the intercoms between the ref and the VAR panel should be broadcast live to bring the fans and TV viewers into the process and hear how they have come to their conclusion.

Yep, doesn't help that the VAR officials seem to change for every game. At least if they were the same, or came from a small pool and randomly selected for each match then they'd learn to be more consistent. Having a reset on it every time and learning on the fly is part of the problem.

Ideally the lead official should include an actual referee that has reffed at least dozens of high profile matches so has first hand experience but logistically that may not be possible if the referee has to fly around Russia and ref games too.

The Mitra and Kane incidents are what VAR is meant to be for, more so especially as grappling in the box is something refs cited before the tournament. For those incidents not to be given penalties is an absolute failure of the VAR system.
