The World Cup takes a break on Friday for the first time in over a fortnight, with the round of 16 commencing on Saturday afternoon.

The lull in action is a welcome respite for Fantasy managers as serious thought can be given to what is effectively a compulsory wildcard, with both McDonald’s FIFA and Fantasy iTeam offering unlimited transfers between the culmination of the group stage and the start of the knockout rounds.

Although the round of 16 fixtures will be the prime concern, Fantasy managers ought to take the quarter-finals into consideration given that only three free transfers are permitted (any more will cost points/credits) before they begin.

READ NEXT: The complete guide to set-pieces and penalties for World Cup Fantasy knockout stages

Up to four players can be selected from one country in both Fantasy games at the last 16 stage, though some Fantasy bosses may wish to spread their selections across several nations given the restrictions on transfers before the quarter-finals begin.

Fantasy managers will have already noticed the price rises – and drops – in both our featured World Cup games, though in McDonald’s FIFA at least the allotted budget increases from £100m to £105m for these knockout rounds.

Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.1m), Harry Kane (£11.1m), Diego Costa (£9.1m), Christian Eriksen (£9.1m), Philippe Coutinho (£9.1m), Denis Cheryshev (£5.7m), Andreas Granqvist (£5.1m), Diego Godin (£5.6m) and Fernando Muslera (£5.6m) have all increased in price in McDonald’s FIFA, though no player has risen more than £0.2m.

Lionel Messi (£11.9m), Olivier Giroud (£8.9m), Willian (£8.4m), Dele Alli (£8.9m), Nicolas Otamendi (£5.9m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) are among the big names who have suffered a price drop, meanwhile.

Members can read on for this round-up of the Opta data from the group stages. The data itself is available to members as part of their yearly subscription and obtainable immediately after the end of each World Cup match.

I'm pretty set here. I'm trying to think ahead to the QFs though and it won't look pretty. Brazil - Belgium is gonna be a huge game.

    Alisson Hassen
Ramos Carvajal T. Silva Meunier R. Rod
    Isco Coutinho Claesson Quintero Sanchez
    Neymar Griezmann Lukaku

    0.8m

Thinking of how to diversify so that my team isn't in a mess for the QF.

Yeah but who? I like my forwards a lot so can't get Kane. I guess Maguire or Lingard but Lingard is a black hole since if he gets eliminated there's literally nobody at his price to get.

Well you've seen my team. I've gone without RRod due to him dropping in price and Swiss not being that good, but due to my luck he'll probably a penalty and CS now 😀

I like the Olsen pick. Decent chance of progressing, at least to the quarters, plus you'll earn a price rise.

If you no longer have your WC left consider another bench fodder, those are some expensive players to bench if more than three get knocked out.

Is Mbappe worth considering over Costa? It would give me a day 1 captain and most of us are doubting Costa anyway. Thoughts? I know Griez would be better but currently there's no way I can free up funds for it (using BB so limited amount of fodder)

    1. 420king
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 8 months ago

Don't let the BB limit you like that. I've had 15 playing this week and gotten 1 point from it. Go for two good keepers if anything.

      1. JLAEST
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

I already have Inui, but I feel like it's a waste (also with WC in hand) to have 2 fodders with BB.

          • 11 Years

It's not because you are unlikely to have more than 11 people performing. Every point counts.

And you are never going to have a better bench than this anyway. At least right now they still play.

            I'm currently at

            Carvajal Strinic Miranda RRod Granqvist
            Isco Modric Coutinho Quintero Inui
            Kane Hazard Costa

Any extra fodder you'd get in there? I guess I could do Quintero>Sanchez and Costa>Griez but I'm not sure it's worth

              • 11 Years
              7 years, 8 months ago

It's fine actually. Bit heavy on the keepers but considering BB it might be worth it.

Are you BBing? Got the exact same front 8!

Am also wavering on Costa -> Griezmann. Could you just do RRod->Akanji? Still get points if SUI get clean sheet and it's swapping one pen taker for another.

                Yes I am!

That's a fair point, Costa also doesn't have pens so number of penalty takers stay the same. Might just solve the issue!

How sure are we that Hernandez starts? Assume that's France Hernandez? Also Stones had a minor issue last night so I'd look out for any updates on him as well.

Seems a tiny bit heavy at the back, perhaps shift a bit of that into MF?

I see where you're coming from but I don't know is there any one else I want in midfield. Isco maybe but I have Spain cover in Costa. I thought Hernandez (France) was nailed since mendy hasn't had a game yet.

    Courtois sommer

Guys how does this look for a Bench Boost team:

    Alisson / Schmeichel
    Carvajal / Granqvist / Lovren / Godin / Meunier
    Isco / Modric / Quintero / Coutinho / Inui
    Costa / Kane / Hazard

One thing I'm considering is Costa+Schmeichel to Griezmann+Kawashima. Arg defence isn't great - Griez gives me another pen taker, and have other Spanish attacking options in Carvajal & Isco. So any thoughts on that also greatly appreciated.

Be wary of Meunier, he's on a yellow.
I would do Griezmann + Kawashima as Denmark are almost certain to concede against an in-form Croatia side.
